Season Kickoff, Cadillac Confirmed
PLP Season 3 Edition 3
Race Weekend
The good news: Four long months and the waiting is over folks. We got the real deal this weekend. Testing and DTS over the past few weeks were a nice appetizer but personally Iām ready for the main course. This weekend we get to see if our half-formed hasty pre-season opinions hold any water, because you really donāt know until itās actually lights out on race 1.
The bad news: Rough schedule for the first few races since we start on the other side of the world. But if youāre a night owl like myself then the season kickoff will be no problem. Times for this weekend in EST (To chime in on the current debate, EST > EDT. Give me the extra sunlight in the evening and shift to EST year round):
FP1: Thursday, March 13th @ 9:30pm
FP2: Friday, March 14th @ 1:00am
FP3: Friday, March 14th @ 9:30pm
Quali: Saturday, March 15th @ 1:00am
Grand Prix: Sunday, March 16th @ 12:00am
Quick Question!
First race of 2025: Who ya got for the win? |
Race Preview: Australia
This weekend marks the return of the Aussie GP being the opening race of the season, a position it last held in 2019.
The track is a semi-permanent street circuit surrounding Albert Park Lake in Melbourne. A well-balanced set up is rewarded through a mix of tight, challenging corners and four DRS zones from two detection points. Itās one of the faster tracks on the calendar and will cover 58 laps with the C3-C4-C5 tire compounds being available. Last year a two-stop strategy was optimal. Itās a bit tricky to overtake, but fun to drive when you get in a rhythm (or so Iāve heard).
Weather could play a factor here, with temperature changes throughout the weekend and the chance of Sunday rain ticking up each day. Nailing an optimal set-up in these conditions will be very challenging for the engineers. With the plethora of rookies making their debut, we could see potential fireworks on track - plus there always seems to be some big shunts down under due to the nature of fast sections being broken up by narrow turns.
What to Watch For:
Hamiltonās Ferrari Debut: Need we say more? Really excited to see what the GOAT can do in red.
Six Full Time F1 Newbies: Rookies Antonelli, Bortoleto, and Hadjar (zero F1 starts between them) will join Doohan (1 start), Bearman (3 starts), and Lawson (11 starts) all making their first full time driver debuts.
Pecking Order: Testing can give clues, but all will be revealed on race day. How far ahead is McLaren, and who can give them the best challenge? Is Williams or Alpine (or someone else?) leading the midfield? Who looks like theyāre in for a long season? If it does rain Sunday, weāll have to wait to next weekend to have a better idea.
Last Year of Regulations: With the cars changing next year, we should be in for a good fight in 2025. If teams struggle early - will they switch development focus to next yearās car?
New Intro: Everyoneās favorite sports intro is back with a new look for F175. I gotta say kinda like it. Looks like itās Constructor order from 2024 with new drivers filling in, but Max still gets the top spot. Some good poses (George did the thing!). Although nothing will ever beat mannequin Yuki from last year.
Late Night FP1 Update: Norris tops time sheet, followed closely by Sainz š and Leclerc. Ollie Bearman is OK but off to a rough start after a crash that saw a rear tire dislodged. Should I stay up for FP2ā¦

Cadillac Confirmed
If youāre getting dĆ©jĆ vu, fret not - this news was basically already known months ago. What is official however, is the FIA and other powers that be pushed enough paper and officially approved Cadillac as the 11th team on the grid for 2026. Everyone marvel at the lightning speed of bureaucracy.
The team will be backed by TWG Motorsports and GM, installing some key positions over the past months such as former Marussia Sporting Director Graeme Lowdon joining as Team Principal and industry veteran Russ OāBlenes as CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units, which will contribute towards Cadillac becoming a āfull worksā team by the end of the decade. The squad has bases in Indiana, North Carolina, Michigan, and England - with over 200 people currently employed working on aero, chassis, software, and vehicle simulation.
This confirmation brings on what seems to be everyoneās favorite flavor of tea - who will be the driver pairing for the Caddy Crew (nickname pending final approval) in 2026? The 2024 IndyCar runner up and American driver Colton Herta looks to be near the top of the list, followed by former teammates Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu. Could we see the return of Sergio Perez, or even (everyone take a deep breath) the return of Danny Ric? Doubtful unfortunately. Heās said himself heās donezo.
Bold Predictions
Letās put some of these on the record so we can come back and laugh at them in December:
Driverās Champion: Charles Leclerc
Constructorsā Champion: McLaren. I realize this basically means Iām saying Piastri will outperform Hamilton. Or maybe itās just a hedge to my Charles Driver pick.
Hamilton will win multiple races. Not that bold..
Carlos Sainz will podium in the Williams.
Kimi Antonelli will have multiple podiums, and a win. Heāll give George a good run in the points, and even out qualify him head to head.
Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly will finish in 9 & 10 in the end of season standings.
Gabriel Bortoleto will be praised as one of the top rookies, even though his car will be hot doo-doo butter. Gotta prove Helmut wrong after he called the rookie a āBā driver.
All drivers from the top 4 teams will win a race. Liam and Kimi included, of course. We were close last year but Checo couldnāt get over the hump.
Disclaimer: Some of these may be bolder than others. Got any bold predictions for 2025? Send āem over ā¶ļø [email protected]
Down the Grid
Max Verstappen: The four time champ thinks his record 1000+ days leading the Drivers Championship is about to end in Melbourne: āIf you look at the lap times, then I think McLaren is the favorite. On our side, not everything went completely smoothly, but on the other hand we have some ideas on how to improve.ā
Lando Norris: Not expecting a ābig stepā from the team, saying that theyāll be matched by Ferrari and Red Bull to start 2025. āWeāve struggled a bit more with the rear than what we would have liked [during the first two days of testing].ā Classic sandbagging, imho. I think theyāre the fastest at the moment. But weāll know for sure shortly..
Charles Leclerc: āSurprisedā by the similarities in driving styles between himself and new teammate Hamilton, which he says is a positive for the team. Always a challenge when styles differ and the car has to be developed to favor one or the other - i.e. Max vs Checo the past couple years.
Oscar Piastri: Signed a multi-year contract extension with McLaren this week, locking the Aussie in Papaya āfor the long term.ā CEO Zak Brown says ānot only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it a no-brainer.ā His previous deal expiring in 2026 was $6M per year - his new one expiring (?) will bring in $20M per year. Not bad, Oscar.
Carlos Sainz: On this yearās expectations: āThey wonāt see me on the podium or the top five this year, so donāt get your hopes up, but at least they know I havenāt come to Williams to just hang around or let the years go byā¦Iāve come to push this team ahead.ā Too late Carlos. My hopes are already high.
George Russell: Says his ātime will comeā as he steps into role of team senior driver. āAnd if I keep delivering those results, as I did over these last three years against the best driver of all time, I believe I will get myself in the fight and hopefully a World Championship to my name.ā
Lewis Hamilton: āItching to get goingā ahead of his Ferrari debut. āI've been giving absolutely everything to to training, to push my mind and my body further than I have before, trying to see if I can excel and just squeeze more juice out of this.ā
Fernando Alonso: Feature on how he helped rookie Bartoleto in his early career, giving him advice and sponsoring him in feeder series.
Pierre Gasly: āPieces are falling into placeā ahead of the Aussie GP. After testing challenges in previous years, this year āit felt like we started off in a much better place.ā
Nico Hulkenberg: On testing: āI think itās been okay, obviously Iāve no idea where we areā¦but itās more about finding a good starting point with the car and understanding how set-up changes work, all these kind of basic things.ā Unfortunately, Hulk, Iād posit yaāll are still near the bottom.
Yuki Tsunoda: Heās not letting the lack of a Red Bull call up get to him - TP Laurent Mekies says heās embracing the role as Racing Bulls team leader, saying āhis motivation [is] high. He is at peace with what happened. And he's here to make another step.ā
Lance Stroll: His way of working has left Adrian Newey āpositively surprisedā, adding āHe seems to have a lot more energy than when heās shuffling around the paddock.ā I agree that is surprising.
Esteban Ocon: The last day of testing saw his pace was good enough for P8 on the leaderboard. Look for Haas to try to fight Williams and Alpine at the top of the midfield.
Alex Albon: On team dynamic with Sainz: "I mean, there's no hiding the fact that in previous years I possibly got the preferential treatment.. [this year] it does feel like not only are we equally consideredā¦we're in a much healthier position that we can have an equal hierarchy structure." Itās true, but I do think Carlos will outperform.
Ollie Bearman: Feels good about the season opener with a couple F1 races already under his belt. "I'm quite certain I feel confident heading into round one, what I can do and how comfortable I am in F1 at this stage."
Liam Lawson: Regarding the driver who he replaced last season: āWhen I got the Red Bull seat, Daniel is still the only driver, past or present, to send me a message about it, congratulating me. It says a lot about him as a person.ā
Jack Doohan: Is Alpineās move to Colapinto already decided? Franco has a strong backing ($$$) and a multi-year deal, unusual for a reserve driver. Jack will have to come out fighting.
Kimi Antonelli: On being a rookie at a top team: "I am really grateful for the trust and opportunity Mercedes gave me. But at the same time, it is a big responsibility as well, Mercedes [is a] top team, and so they've got some expectations as well. I am just going to try to make the best out of this."
Gabriel Bortoleto: Teammate Hulkenberg has praised him as being āfast as hellā and said he ālearns quickly.ā Canāt wait to see what all these rookies can do this weekend.
Isaac Hadjar: The F2 runner up to Bortoleto last year is āreally hungryā to get started and says he will ātry to be spectacular on track".
Constructorās Corner
McLaren: With everyone predicting a hot start for Papaya, Lando Norris says the assessment is āshort-sightedā, adding āEveryone just wants to play that game of looking like the underdog and playing it down. We just focus on ourselves.ā I think Lando is right about that, but is ALSO sandbagging a bit himself. McLaren is likely in the best shape until proven otherwise.
Ferrari: The SF-25 is reportedly fully aligned with simulator data, according to data gathered from testing and is responding positively to set up-changes.
Red Bull: The RB21 is apparently 0.3-0.4s faster than the RB20. The visible structure remains similar, but many of the hidden components have been changed - such as the cooling, floor, and suspension in hopes to make the new version āless peakyā than its predecessor.
Mercedes: Toto Wolff thinks the team is behind the top teams at the moment. āAs a team, we had an uphill challenge over the winter. Our competitors finished 2024 strongly and we know that Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren in particular, should have a performance advantage over us initially.ā
Aston Martin: Team boss Cowell is taking some of the pressure off Alonso and Stroll, saying the onus should be on the team to deliver a good car. āThe pressure should come in our direction ā weāve got the job to create a fast race car for them, and Iām absolutely certain that theyāre both going to deliver.ā
Alpine: Renault CEO Luca de Meo revealed the team recently found āan error in the correlation in the wind tunnelā that was likely hampering development previously. After improving at the end of 2024, hopes are high for the team to be a strong midfield contender.
Haas: Will Cadillacās entry next year challenge Geneās squad for Americaās favorite home grown team? Are a lot of Americans Haas fans? Iām skeptical.
Racing Bulls: Technical Director Jody Egginton is getting the call up Yuki desperately wanted - heāll become Engineering Director at Red Bull on April 1st.
Williams: Former F1 driver Shinji Nakano provided some insight on that top Day 2 time Carlos put up in testing: āIf the car platform itself is poor, you cannot get a good time like that even if you attack with less fuel, so I think the fact that Williams was able to record the fastest time is proof of the evolution from last yearās car.ā He says testing times donāt directly reflect pecking order, but thinks the result points to a chassis leap and not just a low-fuel fluke lap.
Kick Sauber: Former Red Bull Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley will assume his new role of Team Principal on April 1st. No foolin!
Tech Talk
Return of the V10? FIA Prez MBS recently said heād love to see F1 return to the beloved engine of old, last seen on the grid 20 years ago. Even Max Verstappen agrees, but heās not holding his breath: āOf course I think it's a very nice ideaā¦but whether it's possible or not, that's obviously a completely different story. I always think it's better to not just shout so many things. It's better to try to solve things behind the scenes - that would be better for everyone.ā
Donāt Flex: The FIA is cracking down on flexible wings since some teams are still thought to be using āmini-drsā flexible components. There will be new checks this weekend for rear wings, as well as front wing checks by Spain. The crack down allegedly angered teams like Red Bull who had spent budget developing here - who have since called out McLaren and Ferrari for still exploiting this loophole.
Off the Grid
Domenicali Extended: F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali has extended his contract with Liberty Media through 2029. Liberty President and CEO Derek Change says āStefano has been an excellent steward of the business, building on its successful foundation and accelerating Formula 1ās rate of growth both commercially and in fan engagement.ā Translated from corporate speak: āHe be bringing in that cash, homie. We ball.ā
F1: The trailer for Brad Pittās new movie is out now.
Madring: Thatās the name of Madridās new street circuit, which will host the Spanish GP next year.
Behind the DTS Scenes: Are you watching Drive to Survive? As always some internet folks are complaining about over dramatization and major season events that were left out. Iām about half way through and while what they say is mostly true, itās still entertaining. Just donāt take all those dramatic edits as gospel. Hereās some logistical numbers from the operation.
Vegas Numbers: Sin City released their economic impact report from 2024ās race - totaling almost $1B, which was comparable to what the Super Bowl did for the city in 2024. So F1 is clearly just as big as the Super Bowl in the eyes of every American, right? Definitely.
Quick Question (My answer)
Give me Oscar to kick off the season with a home race W.
Get pumped! Weāre in for a great season, and weāll be here every Friday to break down all the action. I think weāre in for a good season opener..
