PLP Season 2 Edition 4

34 Days Until the 2024 Season Opening Weekend

The hot stove offseason continues with another spicy week. Among the stories weā€™ve got today, Netflix also confirmed that Drive to Survive Season 6 (a.k.a. The Guenther Farewell Tour) will officially return on February 23rd - which is also the last day of preseason testing. I can barely contain myself. Soonā€¦

Speaking of everyoneā€™s favorite Italian former principal of the only American F1 team, I started Guentherā€™s book Surviving to Drive this week. It delivers right off the bat with the first line: ā€œIt probably wonā€™t surprise many people that I am starting my book with a swear word but all I can say is, thank fok that season is over!ā€ Fok. Love it. Iā€™ll drop a review when I finish the book, which will hopefully be before the season starts. I am a notoriously slow reader.

Quick Quiz!

While Leclerc will likely join this list once we know his contract terms, who are the only two drivers with a contract beyond 2025?

Answer revealed at the bottom ā¬‡

Last Week: 82% were correct with Toro Rosso. Though I think we can all agree that Rood Stier is definitely better than what AlphaTauri came up with... Anyone have any contacts at Red Bull? We should write a letter to suggest the change.

AlphaTauriā€™s New Name is.. Not What We Thought

Racing Bulls actually seems good after this news šŸ“ø @formularacers_ on X

Not to be outdone by Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, AlphaTauriā€™s official name rebrand was dropped this week. And the name isā€¦ drumroll pleaseā€¦ Visa Cash App RB. Huh. Thatā€™s uhā€¦ something, I guess. And according to the team, RB does not stand for Racing Bulls, and VCARB has been the internally adopted acronym. Just as the dust was settling from ā€œStake F1 Teamā€ befuddling race fans everywhere, the team formerly known as AlphaTauri said hold my beer.

The rebrand coincides with an effort internally to shed the ā€œRed Bull junior teamā€ status and become more competitive - all while the team plans on building a greater presence at the big bullā€™s Milton Keynes campus (and the new logo still has a bull on it??? Mixed messages). Numerous other teams have called out the close relationship between the two this past season, with the connection being stronger than a typical supplier-customer agreement.

The reaction from F1 fans has been poor on this news, to say the least. Canā€™t say I disagree. While change is always going to get some resistance (life lessons āœØ), this one justā€¦ ainā€™t it (as the kids say). Bit of a stinker Iā€™m afraid. Youā€™ve got iconic manufacturers like Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren.. and now Visa Cash App RB. At least the logo and colors look coolā€¦ Actually looking forward to the livery reveal on this one which drops on February 8th.

Hola Madrid, Adios Barcelona?

šŸ“ø @F1 on X

We covered the rumor a month ago, but this week it was confirmed: Madrid will be hosting a street race starting in 2026. A reported 48M Euro per year fee was paid to secure the 10-year contract that will see racing in Spainā€™s capital through 2035. With the announcement, the natural thought is the current Spanish GP in Barcelona could be cooked with itā€™s contract expiring in 2026. But F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says not so fast - ensuring the Circuit de Catalunya race still may have a future on the calendar - with discussions already underway to see if collaboration with Barcelona can continue.

If you remember the possible track designs that were floating around, the settled circuit looks kinda similar to Option #2 covered in our December 15th edition. The track will be based around the IFEMA Madrid exhibition center, close to other high-profile sporting arenas in the area. The 20-turn 5.474 km track will have an estimated lap time of 1m32s, combining long straights, fast sweeping section, as well as tight chicanes. It will utilize both public roads and private land, so part permanent and part street circuit, similar to Miami. With this set up, the track will feature two short tunnel sections (Love a good tunnel. Full of mystery and intrigue. We need more tunnels.), a possible banked turn 10, and ā€œserious speedā€ section through turns 13 to 17.

Unlike VCARB, reaction across F1 fans has been mixed - ā€œpuristsā€ really donā€™t seem to like street circuits. Personally I like the different challenge and style of racing they present, as long as there is a good mix of street and traditional on the calendar. Although it is interesting we have a record number of street circuits in an age where the cars have never been bigger. But ask any knowledgeable race fan and theyā€™d probably agree that while the current Spanish GP track is fine, itā€™s not particularly special or known for great racing action. New tracks are always exciting so best we give this one a shot before we judge too harshly.

Leclerc Contract Confirmed

Tough to look away from this majestic gentleman šŸ“ø @ScuderiaFerrari on X

In another edition of ā€œwe reported on this rumor over a month ago but the news is now confirmed this weekā€, we have the official announcement from the Scuderia that the team has agreed to contract terms with Charles Leclerc. The rumors at the end of last year were 25M euro, growing to 50M euro over the 5 year life of the contract. However, at this time the actual terms of the contract have not been revealed and the team is simply reporting an extension ā€œbeyond the 2024 seasonā€. Part of Charlesā€™ statement reads ā€œMy dream remains that of winning the World Championship with Ferrari and Iā€™m sure that in the years ahead, we will enjoy great times together and make our fans happy.ā€ Can you imagineā€¦

This is a no-brainer move by Ferrari. One of if not THE fastest driver on the grid over one lap. Locking him up is the right move. Love his all or nothing, completely on the edge driving style that is a threat to take pole position in any given weekend. Now we just watch for Sainz contract newsā€¦ any day nowā€¦

Ferrari: Year in Review

šŸ“ø @f1 on Instagram

Ok listen, if youā€™ve been a reader for a few months now, it may come as no surprise that we here at the Pulse are indeedā€¦ Ferrari fans. Maybe not quite Tifosi level, but we pull for the Prancing Horse. Is it because there is Italian blood in our family history? Or that weā€™re a fan of the country, cuisine, and culture? Or is it that weā€™re gluttons for race day punishment? Is it simply their incredibly good looking driver pairing?

Whatever the case, we do our best to be unbiased. But even with a very close P3 finish in the Constructorsā€™ last year, itā€™s hard not to be disappointed. Ferrari has the history, the brand, legendary drivers in its ranks, and all the resources to be a dominant force in F1. But lately, it seems like they canā€™t get out of their own way. Their biggest rival isnā€™t Red Bull or Mercedes, itā€™sā€¦ Ferrari. While this sentiment has become a bit of a trope, last season under Vasseur does feel like an improvement over 2022ā€™s comedy of errors.

Ferrari was Maxā€™s biggest threat to steal pole last year, with Charles notching 5 to Carlosā€™s 2. Unfortunately once the race started you knew how it would likely play out, with the team lacking the race pace to hang on to the top position. Except for Singapore that is - a track that was very poor for the champs and a race that saw a strategy masterclass from Sainz, who held on from pole for the victory - securing the only non-Red Bull win in perhaps the highlight of the entire season. While the season started a bit slow for Leclerc, he found consistency later on and took 6 podiums and P5 in the driverā€™s championship. Sainz was only 6 point behind for a P7 finish, taking 3 podiums of his own. With only 6 points separating 4th through 7th, a tough end to his season (Vegas which was out of his control, and poor quali in Abu Dhabi) likely left him a bit frustrated.

While many times you see these drivers making their own strategy calls (and often to great effect, Carlos in Singapore and Leclercā€™s bold call to try to secure P2 in Abu Dhabi, even if it came up short), it does seem like overall the team saw improved decision making in 2023. Obviously you need the car to compete, so as always a lot hinges on off season progress - but give these guys a top car and either of them can bring the fight to Max. Some would argue Leclerc has the better shot but Sainz pace was not far off all year. You have to believe a team as storied as Ferrari can ascend to the top of the field once againā€¦

  • Highs: Sainz Singapore win, driver strategy calls, Monza battle

  • Lows: Austin DQ, Vegas drain cover, Abu Dhabi finale to miss P2

  • ā€œI believe the best is yet to come and I canā€™t wait for this season to start, to make further progress and be competitive every race.ā€ - LEC

  • ā€œI will renew ifā€¦I feel that I am valued. That as a driverā€¦is the main priority. I am convinced that if we both want to, we will reach an agreement on a duration that I am happy with.ā€ - SAI

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen: Wins the iRacing Daytona 24H with teammates Gianni Vecchio and Ole Steinbraten. There ya have it. We have yet to race in 2024 and Max is already racking up victories. Oy Vey. This guy just lives to race.
šŸ„ˆ Sergio Perez: Feels as though he ā€œregressedā€ throughout 2023, wants to ā€œachieve regularity and build momentumā€ in 2024
šŸ„‰ Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes has no doubt that his ā€œcompulsive need to winā€ is still in tact, despite two difficult years
4ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso: F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali believes the newly announced Madrid GP will be motivation for the Spaniard to extend career to 2026
5ļøāƒ£ Charles Leclerc: With only 5 wins from 23 pole positions (and Max taking 11 from his P1 starts), the numbers donā€™t tell the whole truth
6ļøāƒ£ Lando Norris: Team is confident that his full potential has not been unlocked yet as he chases maiden F1 win
7ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz: Congratulates his father Carlos Sr. at the finish line after his 4th Dakar win at 61 years of age. Legend.
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell: Caught some downhill skiing in Austria with the Wolffā€™s, and a bumped into a familiar face - Sebastian Vettel
9ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri: Training, simulator, and hitting snooze: a day in the life of an F1 driver. [F1 Unlocked Only] I feel like every week thereā€™s these little features on the now 2nd year driver. Heartwarming.
šŸ”Ÿ Lance Stroll: Krack: Acknowledges mid-season struggles weighed heavily on the Canadian driver, and praises his end of year improvements
11. Pierre Gasly: Rumor is there is dissatisfaction among Alpine drivers as team goes through major upheaval
12. Esteban Ocon: Still has ties to Mercedes despite being with Alpine for several years
13. Alexander Albon: On ā€œbest yearā€ in 2023, ā€œI never felt like I didnā€™t belongā€. Well dang right Alex, ya killed it. Will be interesting to see how Williams develops the car next year. Albon got all he could out of last years car, heā€™ll likely need a better one to take an even bigger step this year.
14. Yuki Tsunoda: Hits the gym. Could it be? Yukiā€¦ enjoying a workout? From the guy who once said working out in the morning ā€œruins his whole dayā€ šŸ˜‚
15. Valtteri Bottas: Prepared to reach out other teams if contract talks break down, ā€œF1 is the number one thing for meā€
16. Nico Hulkenberg: Komatsu enjoyed working with him last year, saying his drivers know he is ā€œstraightforwardā€
17. Daniel Ricciardo: Former driver Christian Albers claims thereā€™s a ā€œhigh chanceā€ he sees a RBR seat this season. The offices here at the Pulse would literally implode if this happens.
18. Zhou Guanyu: Believes team can recapture 2022 form
19. Kevin Magnussen: Komatsu: New car should suit K-mag better due to his preference to car speed through a corner, which the VF-23 did not handle well. Contrast that will Hulkenberg, who prefers to brake more in a straight line, then turn sharply and accelerate out of a turn.
20. Logan Sargeant: Believes that people donā€™t put U.S. drivers on the same level as others, saying ā€œI think people think and expect less from an American driverā€, but recognizes that ā€œas long as the people who matterā€¦ know what youā€™re capable of, thatā€™s all that mattersā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull: Horner confirms a faster RB20 saying ā€œWeā€™re making progressā€
šŸ„ˆMercedes: Allison: Hopes ā€œspitefulā€ characteristics have been eliminated from 2024 car after winter push
šŸ„‰Ferrari: Insist 2024 car is ā€œnot a Red Bull copyā€. While set to follow some of their rivals concepts, they are reported to be taking their own approach when it comes to airflow.
4ļøāƒ£ McLaren: Warns that solution to eliminate update quirks that made qualifying tricky for its drivers may ā€œtake a few monthsā€ to resolve
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin: Krack: Factory switch to new Silverstone campus should not be used as an excuse for mid-season slump
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine: Targeting a wider operating window on ā€œcompletely newā€ 2024 car. So essentially getting a car that is more adaptable to different surfaces, circuits, and race conditions
7ļøāƒ£ Williams: Former Mercedes man James Vowles has brought long-term thinking back to the Grove squad, no longer living ā€œhand-to-mouthā€
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB: Team CEO Peter Bayer on how the team can no longer focus on preparing rookies as it prepares to rebrand. Weā€™ll stick with VCARB for now until a way to refer to them sticksā€¦
9ļøāƒ£ Stake F1 Team: Bottasā€™ reaction to when asked about the teamā€™s name change: ā€œCan you remind me, whatā€™s the name again?ā€ šŸ˜‚ Us too Valtteri, us to..
šŸ”Ÿ Haas: Komatsu: Gene Haas has right to be ā€œembarrassedā€ over F1 results. In other news Komatsu already said while the VF-24 is a step up, he doesnā€™t expect it to be immediately competitive, due to a late start on the carā€™s development. Not an ideal start to a team principal tenure.. but to be fair letā€™s give him some time to get his hands dirty in the leadership role.

Tech Talk

  • While not car tech, check out this example of what could be possible for future race watching with virtual reality. This set up would be incredible. Having a 3D track view of 20 cars at once would make it a lot easier to visualize track position and strategies that call for getting into clean air. Plus it looks freakinā€™ sweet.

  • A nice comparison from @FDataAnalysis between cars at Formula 1/2/3/4 levels. Horsepower is 1000/620/380/160 respectively, with top speeds being 350/335/300/250 km/h.

  • Ferrariā€™s SF-24 is expected to feature many innovations, including reworking the aerodynamics around the headrest and halo, and wide body work at the rear more similar to the Red Bull concept. The Rosario Guiliana image below highlights what we may see from the updated Ferrari - note the red arrow showing the widened area around the exhaust on the Red Bull, designed to better eliminate heat šŸ”½

These drawings are so cool. Can you spot the differences? āœ Rosario Giuliana

Off the Grid

  • Mick Schumacher: ā€œF1 will always remain the dreamā€, as he prepares to drive Alpineā€™s A424 hypercar in the World Endurance Championship for 2024.

  • ā€œWhatever it Takesā€ documentary from AlphaTauri (pre-name change) on the evolution of the team [Movie]

  • If youā€™re a gaming fan, or have young kids, or simply exist on this earth youā€™ve probably heard of minecraft - a mining/building game (think virtual legos, in a sense) where players with way too much time on their hands have made some truly grand creations. Take these models of Bahrain and Monza as examples, constructed via 1Ɨ1 virtual blocks of different types šŸ”½

Ok I realize if youā€™re not familiar with the game then this is meaningless, but trust me this took a someone a loooooong time. Both are quite impressive. šŸ“ø @f1wow on Instagram

Quiz Answer

D. Verstappen and Piastri. I was surprised as well, though upon googling I do now recall the extension through 2026 McLaren announced with Piastri back in September. Max is locked in until 2028. Though surely Oscarā€™s salary is just pocket change for Max.

Phew, the news was fast and furious this week. And to think I was afraid there wouldnā€™t be enough to cover in the offseason.

Found this gem that must have been released the beginning of last season (sorry Nyck). Just look at ā€˜lil Yuki. And Lance has seriously not aged a day šŸ”½
