PLP Season 2 Edition 40

Fun fact I read this week: Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, turned 100 on Tuesday - becoming the first President to reach the milestone. That means heā€™s been alive for 40% of U.S. history since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The F1 equivalent? Fernando Alonso, who will hit 400 races in Austin. With COTA this year being race #1120 in F1 history, that means heā€™ll have participated in over 35% of all races in F1 history. Thatā€™s the most of any driver (with Hamilton about two seasons worth of races behind, with 346 to his name).

By my rough calculation, Fernando would need to start every race through the 2027 season to hit 40% like Jimmy. I wouldnā€™t be too surprised if he did.

This fun fact is brought to you by the second four week F1 break of the season. Still some goings on to report though šŸ”½

Quick Quiz!

What year was the first Formula 1 race at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, TX?

Last week we asked what you thought of the Danny Ricc news. While most thought he hadnā€™t shown enough, a lot also agreed that VCARB didnā€™t handle it as they should have - both of which are not mutually exclusive.

Andretti Update

Michael Andretti, owner of the cleanest goatee in all of motorsport, has restructured Andretti Global to give greater control of the organization to co-owner Dan Towriss. Andretti will stay on as a strategic advisor to the team, as he looks to shift away from the day-to-day operational side.

In early 2023, Andretti sold a portion of the company to Towriss who leads Gainbridge - a large IndyCar sponsor who also sponsors Andretti driver Colton Herta in the Indy 500. Extra cash provided by the partial sale to Gainbridge has allowed the team to expand rapidly over the past year and a half, and has been a large part of the teamā€™s push to secure a Formula 1 grid slot.

A spokesman for the team said: ā€œHe and Dan Towriss have been working on a structure of what this could look like and have reached a direction that Michael is very happy with and believes will bring a positive future. Michael remains engaged and will continue to serve as a strategic advisor and key ambassador.ā€

In 2021, Michael along with his father Mario formed a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) called Andretti Acquisition, seeking to raise money in an IPO to buy another business. In March of this year, a merger was closed with Zapata Computing Holdings, a generative AI company. Andretti Global is Zapataā€™s largest customer, while the AI company in turn sponsors Andretti Global. The SPAC took Zapata public at $10 per share - which are now trading at $0.33 per share. Michael Andretti has 13% diluted equity in the company.

Seems like this whole Zapata business - which lost 97% of itā€™s value is playing a large role in the sale. Classic confusing financial arrangement where the two companies are paying each other. But importantly - what does this mean for the F1 bid? If this Towriss fella will still inject cash, then Iā€™d imagine the push is still on the table. Theyā€™ve already put a lot of effort into it. Feels like this doesnā€™t help though. Iā€™ll say time will tell because we know the F1 brass is taking plenty of it to make further considerations for grid expansion.

Alpine Doesnā€™t Want to be Slow Anymore

Well, obviously. But the power unit produced by Renault has been a known pain point for some time, consistently costing the team several tenths of second in pace. Renault CEO Luca de Meo has been perturbed by the teams recent form, and the switch was the result of an intensive review of their F1 operations as many senior leaders have left in the past year and a half.

The squad is currently in talks with Mercedes to become a customer team in 2026, which can still work out well - just look at McLaren who currently get their PU from the Silver Arrows. Merc is able to pick up another customer team in two years since current customer Aston Martin is moving to Honda. Nothing official has been announced yet, but the last time major engine changes hit the grid in 2014, Mercedes nailed them and went on a dominant run. Alpine getting in on that action would be an instant boost in performance from where they currently stand.

Talks are being led by Renault F1 boss Flavio Briatore who was called on by de Meo to help rebuild the team. Under his watch so far, Oliver Oakes was brought in to replace Bruno Famin as team principal.

Will be interesting to see how customer teams fair if their supplier is able to nail the new engine regs. Will we see another apprentice outperform the master, like McLaren is doing now?

F1 Arcade: Fun Times in a Fast Atmosphere

Sounds like how the headline would read in a small suburban town newspaper.

They set the tone when you walk in with some red neon lights on a black backdrop, with vroom vroom sounds pumped in overhead. The place itself is pretty big and Iā€™d say a semi-open concept, with two full bars, a more private area for parties, another separate room for potential events, and about 50 simulators total spread out in different pockets.

If you have a small party, expect to pay $28pp for three races over a half hour. Not the cheapest but it was adequate to get a feel for things, and they have other deals for larger groups. A staff member in a spectacular sparkly shirt resembling a disco ball will walk you through everything you need to do to get started, and itā€™s quite easy to get set up and jump in. They staff overall was quite helpful and friendly.

The simulators themselves are a lot of fun. Thereā€™s rumble response in the seats, sound right behind your head, and of course a legit steering wheel and pedals that supply appropriate resistance. Thereā€™s five difficulty levels with decreasing levels of AI assist, I started on #2. Cut to me feeling like a young Lewis Hamilton as I cruised to a 14s P1 victory in my first race. I stepped it up the middle difficulty for the next race and my goodness was that harder. P10, nearly got lapped by Lance Stroll. Ouch. Same finish in my third race as well, though I did get a much better handle on controlling the car. If you ever go, start out with level 1 or 2 but Iā€™d encourage you to give 3 a try (or even higher if your better than I am), it was a fun challenge - and now I have a reason to go back and try to get better šŸ˜€.

I took a bunch of pictures which are a bit misleading - there were actually a good amount of people there at 4:30 on a Sunday. I intentionally tried to not include other people in them (public photograph consent and all that, if thatā€™s even a thing, but seemed like the right thing to do) and Iā€™d reckon the simulators were about 75% full at any given time.

Speed, Lights, and Vroom Vroom šŸ“ø it me

Hereā€™s where I failed from a journalistic perspective: We were on a bit of a time crunch to make the four hour drive home, so I did not sample any of the food and only had time for 1 brewski. Menu looked like it had some decent options, but I couldnā€™t tell you if it was good or not. Also, I completely blanked and failed to ask the staff any questions whatsoever. How many people came in to watch the race? Do you have racing leagues here? What are your return on equity margins and can you expect to continue to leverage vertical synergies and avoid market headwinds? I guess weā€™ll never know. Unless I can convince my wife to go back when weā€™re up in the area again in three months. Stay tuned.

Bottom Line: 5/5 stars, get there if you have the chance. Thereā€™s also one in D.C opening soon, with Vegas and Philly likely coming next year.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [331]: Speaking of birthdays, Max turned 27 on Monday - which also marked the 862nd day leading the WDC since he took over the top spot in Barcelona on May 22nd, 2022. The all time record is held by Michael Schumacher at 896 days - which Max will almost undoubtedly break.
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [279]: Auctioning off his pole position tire award from Singapore to support Sir Jackie Stewartā€™s charity that funds breakthrough dementia research.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [245]: Ferrariā€™s improvement has him dreaming of a title fight, saying he believed itā€™s possible in the near future. "Every season that we go into, we always think about and target the titleā€¦That's what Ferrari should target.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [237]: Howā€™s this for a flawless season: In every race so far, heā€™s scored points, made Q3, and completed every lap. And now we have a record of the jinx incoming fro Austin in two weeks. Sorry Oscar.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [190]: Getting one last win as a Ferrari driver is his #1 goal before moving to Williams for 2025. ā€œI think we also need to show progress at the other kinds of circuits like Brazil, Austin, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, which are more normal circuitsā€¦If we show progress there I think we might have a chance.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [174]: On his winless streak of nearly 1,000 days before taking P1 in his home race this year: ā€œItā€™s a battle of the mindā€¦Ultimately, it always comes back to persistence and dedication. Hard work. It always does eventually pay off.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [155]: Christian Horner, ever the ruffler of Totoā€™s feathers, threw Georgeā€™s name out on a list of potential Red Bull targets in the future. ā€œLook, weā€™re not afraid to go out of the pool. George Russell is out of contract at the end of next year. It would be foolish not to take that into consideration.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [144]: Responded to the rumor that heā€™d be announcing retirement at the Mexico GP with a classic Leo ā€œIā€™m not f****** leaving!ā€ Wolf of Wall Street clip. Well played by Checo here. Though a cheeky internet fellow did quip that in that particular scene, Jordan Belfort is basically sealing the fate of himself and his company. šŸ˜
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: On waiting for Newey to make an impact: ā€œI donā€™t have time.ā€ Heā€™s looking for the team to take steps forward sooner, pointing to potential catalysts like the new wind tunnel that will be ready in a few months time.
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg šŸ“ˆ [24]: Komatsu points to his tire management learnings from the start of pre-season testing as a contributor to his success this season. ā€œYes, the car is better, so it's easier to manage. But from his side as well, I think his understanding is much better.ā€
11. Lance Stroll šŸ“‰ [24]: Guenther Steiner on a recent podcast appearance said about Stroll: ā€œYou never speak good or bad about him, heā€™s just non-existentā€¦He was never young, he will never be old. He will just be there. Heā€™s above the rules.ā€ Philosopher Steiner over here.
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Continued his recent string of bad luck when his power unit caught fire during a demo of the RB8 in Taiwan.
13. Alex Albon [12]: Ran a demo of the FW45 at the Gulf Speed Festival in Sao Paulo. ā€œIn terms of doing donuts and burnouts and all this kind of stuff, weirdly or not, we don't actually practice it that much! So it takes a little bit of learning to get used to it.ā€
14. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: F1 feature: How he left his mark on the sport both on and off the track
15. Pierre Gasly [8]: Comments surfaced this week about what he witnessed from Jos Verstappen while racing against Max in the karting days: ā€œAfter a race in Spain, I won that race and Max finished second behind me, I come back and his dad lost his s***, yelling in Dutch, then insulting him in English words I won't repeat on camera, but they weren't nice. He grabbed Maxā€™s helmet, took it and threw it at him saying ā€˜No, get out! Go back to the tent! You can't even win one of your races!ā€™ So the pressure was obvious. It was intense pressure, race after race." Canā€™t say thatā€™s healthy way to encourage your son, but also canā€™t argue with the results. Max is the exception though. That kinda thing usually ends poorly.
16. Ollie Bearman [7]: Did his performance along with Colapintoā€™s sway the Red Bull driver shuffle? Christian Horner: ā€œThe young guys, they get in, theyā€™re hungry, and they just drive the wheels off it.ā€
17. Kevin Magnussen [6]: A shot from Singapore that shows a unique perspective.
18. Esteban Ocon [5]: From his post on the Daniel Ricciardo news: ā€œItā€™s been a pleasure DR! Youā€™re a top guy and I learned a lot from you during our time together. You made your mark on the sport and should be very proud of your achievements. I know youā€™ll lick the stamp and send it and find success in whatever you do next!ā€ They were teammates at Renault in 2020.
19. Franco Colapinto [4]: Rumor is talks are advancing with Sauber, with Williams working to help get a deal done.
20. Zhou Guanyu [0]: On his love of fashion: ā€œFrom the age of 13 or 14 I was able to have my own kind of taste and decide what I want to wear. [My mom] let me do it because she could see that I wasnā€™t doing something stupid or crazy.ā€ Please check out this picture. He just needs his cat in there.
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: Weā€™ll miss you on home soil in two weeks, cowboy.
22. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Thinks heā€™s driving better now than during his five year stint at Mercedes. Saw another rumor that his signing with Sauber is imminent. So idk about Colapinto next year..
23: Liam Lawson [0]: Set to receive a 10 place grid penalty in the Austin Sprint race for taking a new power unit. Howā€™s that for a welcome to F1?

Daily News for Curious Minds

ā€œI stopped watching the news, so sick of the bias. Was searching for an alternative that would just tell me WHAT happened, with NO editorializing. I found it. Itā€™s called 1440. It assumes you are smart enough to form your own opinions.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡McLaren [516]: Bad news for rivals: Theyā€™ve still got some upgrades in the pipeline. But TP Stella has been tight lipped about when weā€™ll see them.
šŸ„ˆRed Bull [475]: The team wants to keep Daniel Ricciardo in an ā€œambassadorial capacityā€, and Christian Horner has even left the door open for a return: ā€œOne never really knows, if Liam doesnā€™t get the job done, if Checo doesnā€™t get the job done, we know what Danielā€™s capability is.ā€ Donā€™t tease us like that!
šŸ„‰Ferrari [441]: Announced the signing of former McLaren Aero Design Engineer Miles Ratcliffe.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [329]: Kimi Antonelli says heā€™s ready to face the pressure of F1 - but doesnā€™t want to be viewed as ā€œHamiltonā€™s replacementā€, adding ā€œHeā€™s such a great figure in the sport of today, and he has achieved so much in his careerā€¦Iā€™m just the next driver for Mercedes in ā€™25, so Iā€™m really excited for that.ā€ Impossible shoes to fill. Sounds like heā€™s got a level head on his shoulders though at such a young age.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: How long until Neweyā€™s influence to leads to results on track? If history is any indication, his designs usually deliver impressive results.
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: It also came out this week that Helmut Marko wanted Ricciardo out after Spain. Very likely that Christian Horner was the one who fought to keep him there. This explains the words ā€œnot without a fightā€ found on his helmet during the Barcelona weekend.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [31]: With the team outperforming this season, Gene Haas is investing more $$$. TP Komatsu: ā€œBut the good thing is Gene, he always said he will invest as long as we can show as a team we can maximize what we got. This is exactly what we've done.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Williams [16]: TP Volwles appeared on the Beyond the Grid podcast and talked about how he thinks the team is on the right track with ā€œthe best driver lineup on the gridā€ next year in Sainz and Albon. 2025 McLaren and Ferrari would like a wordā€¦
9ļøāƒ£ Alpine [13]: 50 years of Renault building power units will come to and end as they become a customer team in 2026. Renault, a popular car manufacturer in France, rebranded their F1 team to Alpine in 2021 to promote their sports car brand.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Average pit stop time in the past 5 races: Sauber? 2.85. Red Bull? 2.9s. Gotta take the small victories.

Tech Talk

  • Mexican Tire Test: FP2 will be extended by 30 minutes at the upcoming Mexico GP to test 2025 soft compounds.

  • Red Bull Gives Themselves Wings: Set to bring a new flexible front wing (now joining McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari) along with a revised floor to Austin.

  • Carbon Based Car Form: Wanna know how carbon fiber is used on an F1 car in only 90 seconds? Check it out here. Always loved the carbon fiber look dating back to customizing my own car on Need For Speed Underground back in the day. Classic.

Off the Grid

  • Franco Bump: Argentina is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting itā€™s first Grand Prix since 1998 fresh off the boost of hometown interest thanks to Franco Colapintoā€™s F1 debut.

  • Whereā€™s the Credit? F1 president Mohammed Ben Sulayem doesnā€™t think the FIA gets enough credit for what they do, saying ā€œWe will never get the credit. Impossible. We'll only get rubbish. That I knowā€¦When you look at it, everybody made money out of the FIA, everyone except the FIA. Everyone gets the credit, except the FIA.ā€ Kinda comes with the territory. The rule enforcer is always the bad guy (See: Roger Goodell of the NFL). Do you expect people to be like: ā€œYea ya know I think the IRS does a great job, theyā€™ve spent my tax dollars quite efficiently. Heck, they should take more!ā€

  • Sorry Rookies: The planned rookie sprint race in Abu Dhabi has been postponed until 2025 due to ā€œtiming and organizational constraints.ā€ Funny enough, thatā€™s the same excuse I use when I forget clean the dishes sitting in the sink.

  • High Fashion: Luxury brand LVMH is now officially a global partner for F1, starting a 10 year deal in 2025.
