Mexico GP Recap

šŸ„‡ SAI - šŸ„ˆ NOR - šŸ„‰ LEC

DNF: TSU - ALB - ALO

Fastest Lap: LEC

DoTD: SAI

My Checo podium prediction could not have been more wrong. He was the last qualified driver and even had a failed fastest lap attempt. Oof.

Carlos Sainz put in a brilliant quali lap to take pole position - only to see it slip away to Max down the first straight into turn 1. But no worries, he had a plan. Both Tsunoda and Albon saw their rough weekends come to an end with a collision that brought out a safety car for the second week in a row.

Sainz grabbed the lead back from Max on lap 9, and wouldnā€™t look back - building up to an 8s lead at one point and perfectly managing his race. Vamos! 1 lap later however, Max became an absolute terrorist. Lando had a move around the outside and Max pushed him way wide, then made a lunge a few corners later with no chance of making the exit, running the McLaren off the road. Leclerc took the spoils and moved up into P2, with Max taking 20s in penalties for his (aggressive) efforts.

Liam Lawson once again ruffled some feathers, this time while battling Checo during a spicy come-together on lap 18 that left the hometown hero with some sidepod damage. Liam quickly becoming enemy #1 against the grids longest tenured drivers. I like the moxie.

With Lando closing the gap with 8 laps to go, Leclerc made an error coming out of the final turn and the papaya was able to scoot through to P2. He wasnā€™t able to double up the favor on the Ferraris though 0 and Sainz maintained the lead to take home his second victory of the season and fourth of his career. That make SIX multiple race winners this season. Russell hung onto P4 as long as he could in his older spec car against his teammate, but Hamilton was able to make the move past with 5 laps remaining.

After the dust cleared: Ferrari looks to have the edge on McLaren and has a great shot at the Constructorsā€™ title. The Red Bull upgrade didnā€™t seem to hit, and Max is trying to do too much. Mercedes continues to wallow after their mid-season spark. Haas is one fire, they will be fun to watch the rest of the way. More to come on overtaking rules - there seems to be a lot of confusion about whatā€™s legal and whatā€™s not. Maybe the FIA will figure it out in time for next seasonā€¦

Brazil GP Preview

ā€œInterlagosā€ (between lakes, as itā€™s nickname describes) features banked corners typical of the WWII track era. The Senna S snakes down to turn 4, leading into a challenging and twisting sector 2, and concluding with a series of uphill, fast lefthanders back to the finish line. The circuit requires a high downforce package, and most closely resembles Hungary, Zandvoort, and some sections of Austin. The track is one of the shortest on the calendar, so weā€™ll have 71 laps (and usually two stops) in the GP.

Jolyon Palmer on the trackā€™s qualities: ā€œA tricky first corner, you can brake much later than you imagine and carry speed into the apex. The middle sector here is all about the flowā€¦One lock-up in either of the tight right-handers and it puts you off line and out of sync. It's easy to lock up as well because you are loaded laterally on the entries thereā€¦rhythm is everything. The final corner is critical, it's all about exit speed to carry you onto the whopping straight back up the hillā€¦Overall it's a short but fun circuit to drive.ā€

Rain is in the forecast for Sat/Sun, so we might get some weather chaos for the first time in awhile. Combined with a new track surface, Pirelli bringing the softest set of compounds available, and only one practice, we could be in for even more unpredictability than weā€™ve typically seen this year - which is saying a lot.

What else to watch for:

  • Sprint! Remember this weekend features a Sprint race. Extra points for the taking on Saturday. Itā€™s not everyoneā€™s cuppaā€™, but call me a Sprint fan. Who doesnā€™t like more racing??

  • Lando Watch: At 47 points behind Max, if the results of the Mexican GP repeat for the remaining 4 GPs and 2 Sprints (Lando P2 and Max P6), Lando would win the WDC by 1 point.

  • New PU for Max: Itā€™s confirmed the championship leader will take new engine parts and a five place grid penalty after his carā€™s struggles last weekend. Lando will have to seize this opportunity and close the gap further when Max drops down the starting order.

  • Clean Racing: Speaking of the top two - will we see more aggressive driving if they come together on track? Max is incentivized to try to slow Lando down. He doesnā€™t need to win races to stay ahead - he just needs to beat Lando (or stay close enough to him).

  • Perez Pressure: This race sure feels like his last chance, if heā€™s even in there. Wouldnā€™t be surprised at a switch during the mini-break before Vegas.

  • Itā€™s a bird, itā€™s a plane, itā€™s aā€¦ Haas? The surprise team has been absolutely flying as of late. Can they pick up big points towards their dream scenario of knocking off Aston for P5 in the Constructorsā€™?

  • Odds: Lando is the favorite followed by Charles and Carlos, with Max down in 4th. Last time Max was this low that I can remember was I think Zandvoort 2022. He was +900 starting from like 13th and won, netting me a rare gambling win.

PSA: Bet with your head, not over it.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [362]: Says his penalties fighting Lando werenā€™t his biggest issue. ā€œMy biggest problem was that we just had no pace. Just struggling a lot on the tires, couldnā€™t really attack, and I couldnā€™t follow Ferrari and McLaren.ā€ His replacement engine was partly to blame.
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [315]: Scored an invite to the family dinner celebrating his good mate Sainzā€™s victory. The Carlando bond remains strong.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [291]: Accidentally let an F bomb slip in the Mexico GP press conference and immediately followed it up with: ā€œOh, sorry! Oh, no, oh no! I don't want to join Max!ā€ Referring to Max getting slapped with community service a few races ago for his language. Apparently the FIA are considering his apology and may only give a warning šŸ˜†
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [251]: ā€œA very poor mistakeā€ led to his surprising Q1 exit in Mexico. ā€œI just went off in Turn 12, got beached on the kerb there, and that was it. My lap was easily going to be enough, so it's very frustrating to make that mistake. I lost about a second.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [240]: Achieves his goal of ā€œone more winā€ with Ferrari before his departure at seasonā€™s end. ā€œHonestly, I really wanted this one, I really needed it also for myself ā€“ I wanted to get it done. Iā€™ve been saying for a while I wanted one more win before leaving Ferrari and to do it here in front of this mega crowd is incredible.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [189]: Had a ā€œfunā€ battle chasing his teammate in the last stint, eventually overtaking him for P4. On keeping the teammate battle clean: ā€œItā€™s pretty straightforward, I don't think either of us are silly.ā€ Cā€™mon now Lewis. George is definitely a little bit silly.
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [177]: Reveals that you donā€™t just make the big bucks right away: ā€œIn my first year of F1, I was on a five-figure salary and actually lost over six figures in that first year from paying for my trainer, paying for flights, paying for an assistant. And that's probably the case for 25 per cent of the grid.ā€ Thatā€™s surprisingly low, even for the worst team on the grid at the time.
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [150]: After his clash with Lawson, he said the young driver doesnā€™t have the right attitude for F1, and needs to be more humble. ā€œWhen you come to Formula 1, you're obviously very hungry and so on, but you have to be respectful as well. In his first two grands prix he has had many incidents. He has to say: 'Look, probably I'm overdoing it a little bit, I will step back and start againā€™.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Has DNFā€™d in his 200th, 300th, and now 400th GP start. This time it was due to a brake cooling issue from stuck debris. ā€œIt hurts always the same, to be honest, when you donā€™t see the checkered flag. It doesnā€™t matter which number.ā€ Insult to injury: got a bug while in Mexico, and missed Brazil media day while still being treated for the illness.
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [31]: Praises the team after a double points finish. ā€œI think everyoneā€™s work is paying off and weā€™re a consistent contender for points which is obviously great news ā€“ I think four time points in a row now for me, including the Sprint in Austin.ā€
11. Lance Stroll [24]: ā€œI think weā€™re 40 seconds behind Magnussen in the Haas so weā€™re in a midfield fight. A lot of work to do.ā€ Haas would have to make up a 40 point deficit in 2 Sprints and 4 GPs. A tall task, but not impossible. Would be MEGA if they can pull it off.
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Rough stretch continued after a spin in Ausin with a crash in Quali last weekend, and an unlucky exit after turn 1 in the race.
13. Kevin Magnussen šŸ“ˆ [14]: Says heā€™s finding his rhythm again after a ā€œperfect dayā€ in Mexico. A P7 finish while fending of Piastri and matching Verstappenā€™s pace in the last stint was quite impressive.
14. Alex Albon šŸ“‰ [12]: A tough weekend saw him hit Bearman in FP1, then DNF on lap 1 after making contact with Yuki. ā€œI donā€™t think I did anything wrong, I donā€™t think anyone else did anything much wrong either, just seems bad luck.ā€
15. Daniel Ricciardo šŸ“‰ [12]: Back to some good pop punk car singalong videos with his free time. Instantly had to look this song up. Quite catchy. If you like pop punk, check it out: ā€œIn Bloomā€ by Neck Deep.
16. Pierre Gasly [9]: Says the team has ā€œclearly made a stepā€ after a Q3 appearance and P10 finish in the race last weekend. Remember the absolute tractor they had at the start of the season?
17. Ollie Bearman [7]: Albon retracted his earlier radio message blaming Ollie for his FP1 crash, saying the team warned the rookie too late.
18. Franco Colapinto [5]: His goal is to stay in F1, but isnā€™t looking too far ahead. ā€œIā€™m not thinking about 2025, not really ā€“ Iā€™m fully focused on this year and what we have to do about the great opportunity that I have for 2024 and to finish the year on a high, and then we will see what I do in 2025.ā€
19. Esteban Ocon [5]: Managed P13 after a pit lane start in Mexico. ā€œA couple of fights, but we are not quick enough to be able to come back from starting last.ā€
20. Liam Lawson [2]: On his duel with Perez that left the hometown driver heated: ā€œI gave him space at [Turn] 4, he came in super late. At that point of the race we had just got some clean air and honestly our pace wasnā€™t bad so Iā€™m not just going to get out of his way.ā€ Liam also gave Checo the ā€˜ol bird flip at one point, which he later apologized for.
21. Zhou Guanyu [0]: On the small victories: ā€œWe still managed to hold our own and stay competitive with the cars around us. Itā€™s a step forward, something we werenā€™t able to do just a few races ago, so itā€™s encouraging progress.ā€
22. Logan Sargeant [0]: Working on his golf swing while he plots his next move.
23. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Reportedly open to a reserve driver role with Mercedes if he doesnā€™t land the Sauber seat. You would think they would go with youth in the reserve role. But I agree the grid is better with Bottas on it.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [566]: CEO Zak Brown on Maxā€™s aggressive moves that resulted in 20s of penalties: ā€œI mean, itā€™s getting a bit ridiculous. I applaud the FIA stewards ā€“ enoughā€™s enough. Letā€™s just have some good clean racing moving forward.ā€
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari šŸ“ˆ [537]: TP Vasseur heaped praise on Sainz: ā€œHe was clever to give up the position [on turn 1] and then to come back and to overtake Max, I think it was a perfect drive and a perfect weekend.ā€ He was also frustrated by lapped drivers not getting out of Leclercā€™s way: ā€œHe lost three or four seconds in the traffic with some idiots and he came back, pushed a little too much, lost a little bit in the tires in the traffic and honestly these guys, they have to respect the blue flag and I donā€™t understand why the FIA didnā€™t give them a penalty.ā€
šŸ„‰ Red Bull šŸ“‰ [512]: Christian Horner called the penalties on Max ā€œvery harshā€, and doesnā€™t like drivers on the outside getting priority. ā€œIf youā€™ve got the inside line, you control the corner. Itā€™s one of the principles in the physics of racing and I think that they just need to get back to basics that if youā€™re on the outside, you don't have priority.ā€ Horner even brought telemetry data to the press conference afterwards, showing Lando had gone into the corner faster than he had any other lap - and wasnā€™t going to make the turn while fighting Max.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [366]: Toto Wolff admits the cost cap has taken a hit from recent crashes, and says the car exists ā€œon a knifeā€™s edge.ā€ ā€œSo, we probably have to dial down what we put on the car. We will be having two upgrade packages in Brazil ā€“ two floors, but that is basically it, nothing else is going to come. We have certain limitation on parts, so we need to be creative.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: Announces a multi-year global partnership with Saudi Arabian mining company Maā€™aden.
6ļøāƒ£ Haas [46]: The only current team on the grid whose drivers both have poles at Interlagos. Hulkenberg in 2010 with Williams, and Magnussen in 2022 with Haas.
7ļøāƒ£ VCARB [36]: Colapinto rumors are heating up, as Horner says he would be a ā€œbad team bossā€ if he didnā€™t check on his availability. Possible scenario: Checo out, Lawson up to Red Bull, and Colapinto at VCARB.
8ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: TP Vowles agrees with 19/20 drivers on the grid that the overtaking rules need clarification: "It's not as clear as it should be, so it has to be changed in the future." George Russell revealed at a driver meeting that all but one driver voted to address overtaking rules immediately rather than waiting until 2025. Hmmmā€¦ I wonder who it wasā€¦
9ļøāƒ£ Alpine [14]: Fined for procedural errors in violation of the cost cap, along with Honda. The FIA determined they did not seek an advantage as a result of the breach, and acted in good faith in correcting the issue.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Former head of Race Strategy at Ferrari, Inaki Rueda, is joining the team as a part of their ongoing restructuring.

Tech Talk

  • Brake Control: McLarenā€™s clever brake cooling design helped propel Lando to P2 and a split of the Ferraris. From Hughes and Piola: ā€œThe cooling air goes outboard over the brake disc, then inboard through the exit, effectively giving two cooling routes (see the technical drawing above). The McLarenā€™s inlet is also slightly larger than that of the Ferrari. The whole duct of the McLaren is fashioned from carbon fiber, in contrast to the Ferrariā€™s aluminum. Carbon fiber conducts less heat than any metal.ā€

  • PACE CHART! @FDataAnalysis does it again. Sainz was just .05s/lap faster than Lando, Max and Lewis were equal, and Magnussen matched Piastriā€™s traffic pace (and even matched Max, who was hampered by PU issues). šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Spoiler Alert: If you donā€™t mind spoilers from the upcoming F1 movie, check out how Brad Pittā€™s character faired at the fictitious version of the Mexico GP.

  • Vegas Prep: A local souvenir shop owner is happier with this yearā€™s Vegas GP set up. Traffic isnā€™t as bad, and organizers listened to complaints that construction last year blocked potential customers from businesses on the track route. F1 officials and local business owners will be holding hands and singing Kumbaya by 2026 at this rate. Ya love to see it.

  • Photobomb: Carlos Sainz and Zak Brown traded photobombs on their respective team photos. Never pass up a good photobomb opportunity.

  • Danger off Track: Itā€™s not only driving that has itā€™s risks. Take a look at this close call from a cameraman on the main straight - and the resulting shot šŸ”½

Gotta be careful out there. The shot was worth it though. šŸ“ø @Autosport on X

Quick Question (My answer)

Reeseā€™s are a classic, Butterfinger used to be my favorite, Skittles a more recent favorite until I learned the Red dye is outlawed in like every other country because itā€™s poison. Might have some anyway. And sorry, but Iā€™m a proud Candy Corn hater. Gross!

Weā€™ll be raceless for the two upcoming weekends, but weā€™ve got VEGAS in three weeks (remember itā€™s on a Saturday). Loved last years edition and I think this years will deliver as well.

Remember how people treated Bartman? How times have changedā€¦ šŸ“ø @f1trollofficial
