Upside-down Pig 2: Electric Boogaloo

Viva! While the inaugural 2023 edition had a rough start, (Sainz drain cover ending practice, unhappy fans who were kicked out before a super late FP2) it turned into one of the best races of the year. And in what has been an incredible season so far, this yearā€™s edition could very well be another dazzling dance in the desert.

Even though the street circuit has some slower, technical sections, the average speed is comparable to that of Monza due to the long straights - the longest on the calendar by some margin being one and a quarter miles down the iconic Las Vegas Strip. The overhead shots will sparkle in the Sin City lights as the track passes by all your favorite spots to lose your shirt. The flat out left hander at turn 17 right before the finish line is a highlight, maybe one of the best turns on the calendar (ducks from incoming tomatoes thrown by F1 track purists. I said what I said!).

The track is low grip, with a low downforce necessary due to the long straights. Cold desert temps will leave the cars feeling jumpy on the track surface, so getting heat in the tires will be vital - but also challenging. From the Pirelli review pack: ā€œDrivers will have to be careful to bring the tires up to temperature without overworking them, avoiding any lock-ups at the heaviest braking points, particularly at the end of the longest straights, along which the tires will suffer a further reduction in surface temperature.ā€ A two stop strategy is likely, considering possible graining and that the C3-C5 will be the tires for the weekend - the softest available.

Max can clinch his fourth straight WDC early Sunday morning as long as he doesnā€™t lose 3 or more points to Lando. Getting four would put him in the ranks of Schumacher, Hamilton, Fangio, Prost, and Vettel, the only other drivers to win the ā€˜ship four times.

This weekend could be the coldest race since Spa and Silverstone - Both won by Lewis Hamilton. How lucky is the GOAT feeling? The Constructorsā€™ battle is still very much alive, with Ferrari 36 points behind McLaren for P1, with just 5 points separating Alpine, Haas, and RB for P6. The track set up should benefit Ferrari more than McLaren and Red Bull, so itā€™s their best chance to strike in the Constructorā€™s battle.

What else:

  • Top 10 moments from the inaugural Las Vegas GP last year. Some from the list: Leclercā€™s pole, an action packed turn 1, the thrilling battle for the lead, Leclercā€™s last lap pass on Checo for P2, comeback drives for Ocon and Stroll, and Sainz breaking the Netflix Cup trophy.

  • All due respect to that list, but the best moment from 2023 was actually when Checo got introduced by the Letā€™s Get Ready to Rumble guy and didnā€™t know what to do.

  • Kerbs painted like playing card suits are back. What did the playing-card-suit-painted kerb say to the F1 driver at the blackjack table? Hit me! šŸ„

  • New Race Director Rui Marques is in. Will the drivers be happier with penalty consistency? Probably not. No shade to Rui, but who is ever happy with a penalty?

  • Check out this side by side comparison of the 1982 track vs today.

  • This yearā€™s edition has been smoother for residents. Some business owners sued F1 and the city last year for lost income during the set up. 10K additional GA tickets have been made available this year at lower prices.

  • The layout and origins of the Las Vegas GP. It had to be on the strip, obviously.

  • McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull have brought new front wings. Red Bull has some floor edits and is taking a run at the Constructorsā€™ seriously. The only team with major upgrades? Sauber. Is that elusive point in sight?

We should be in for a good one here. But if Max manages to pull a gap out in front during the race, they should throw some distracting visuals on the Sphere to try to slow him down. Vegas is about entertainment after all.

Late night FP1 update: Super dusty track with very low grip. Lawson said it was like driving on wet. Times were way behind last year to start, but crept closer towards the end of the section as the track evolved.

Liberty Media CEO Says ā€œPeace Outā€

Greg Maffei, President and CEO of F1 owner Liberty Media is stepping down at the end of the year when his contract expires. Heā€™ll remain on as an adviser, and the companyā€™s 83 year old chairman John Malone will be the interim CEO. Gonna send them my resume.

ā€œThe almost 20 years I have spent at the helm of Liberty Media have been incredibly rewarding, stimulating and endlessly eventfulā€ said Maffei. "While it's never easy to leave an organization as dynamic as Liberty, I am confident that this is the right time.ā€ Liberty chairman John Malone added: ā€œHe has grown our asset base and made the company better and more valuable for shareholders.ā€ Canā€™t believe he actually said the most meme-y business thing possible.

He lead the charge in the takeover from Bernie Ecclestone in 2017, recognizing the ā€œenormous opportunity to grow the sport.ā€ And grow it he did. Numerous innovations in social, race broadcasting, and of course Drive to Survive. Pure speculation, but I wonder if the Justice Department inquiry had any kind of sway? Did he just not want to deal with that headache? Either way, too early to say what this means for the sport going forward. Iā€™d imagine not too much would change.

Canada GP is Movinā€™ on Up

To the east north side. Actually, the race will move up earlier in the calendar starting in 2026 to support the attempted ā€œcalendar rationalizationā€, a.k.a. trying to make the crazy travel make sense. The race that took in June this year will move to May, essentially swapping with Monaco/Imola to get a better grouping of the European races.

The move will cut down on transatlantic crossings, and you know what that means, reduced emissions baby. Letā€™s save that planet one Formula 1 scheduling change at a time. Similar moves have been made in the recent past, including moving Japan to earlier in the year, Azerbaijan later in the year, and Qatar put right before the reliable Abu Dhabi finale.

F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali: ā€œWe applaud the tremendous effort from all involved to accelerate the temporary build of the event, to be ready to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in the past. The change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel. The date change thus fully integrates into the dynamic strategic vision put in place by our team, with the collaboration of our stakeholders, which is fully focused on delivering an amazing Canadian Grand Prix experience in a more sustainable and inclusive environment.ā€

Business tip: Always shout-out the stakeholders. They love that.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [393]: On his prospects for the win this weekend: ā€œGoing off the last races we were definitely not the quickest car so weā€™ll see what we can do here. Last year we had a fun race here but Ferrari was very fast already. This track seems to suit their car but I hope that we can be in that fight this weekend to try and win again.ā€
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [331]: To sum up the WDC battle: ā€œI probably / to go up against Red Bull and Max. I think I am now, and itā€™s probably too late to do that.ā€ Thereā€™s always next yearā€¦ but another chance is never guaranteed.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [307]: On the Vegas track: "I love all street circuits really. I just like the feeling of being so close to the wall without having the possibility to go over the limit cause you pay the price big time. I really like this track as well. it's very poor grip so you slide everywhere but it's a cool feeling anyway." The absolute madman!
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [262]: On his performance this year: ā€œIn the race, itā€™s definitely been a really good improvement from last year, thatā€™s been good. But the improvements in that have not really come at a sacrifice for qualifying approach. Thereā€™s just been a few tricky sessions ā€“ but even going back to earlier in the year, my qualifying was very strong for a nice period.ā€ No more papaya rules. Go get another W Oscar.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [244]: Will drive for Williams at Abu Dhabi post-season test.
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell [192]: Admits the working window for the car is very narrow. If itā€™s set up how they want they can win, but small miscalculations lead to them falling way behind. ā€œBrazil was definitely a bit of a one-offā€¦The Sprint race is a fairer picture of where we are, and that is at the back of the front four teams."
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [190]: Likely to get some testing in on some old Ferrari cars over Winter break. Fred Vasseur: ā€œIā€™m not sure that he needs tons of hours of acclimatization.ā€ Youā€™re right on that Fred. But is ā€˜acclimatizationā€™ even a word? Update: I looked it up. It is indeed a word. Sorry Fred.
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [151]: To get back in the Constructorsā€™ fight: "I think we need a couple of 1-2s from now until the end of the year, so hopefully we can get back on track.ā€ Maybe even a 1-8? Or a 1-6? Last Red Bull double podium was China back in April.
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Named the 2023 Monaco GP as his best race since making his return to F1 in 2021 - when he very nearly missed out on pole and the win. He said it was the most preparation he ever put in for a race in his career, studying every bump, piece of data Aston had, and watching past races.
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [31]: Not worried about 2025 given Sauberā€™s current mega slump. ā€œAnd it just comes down to for them to develop, to put a better package on the road, which is what Haas managed to do over the winter. That will obviously be the target and the ambition for Sauber as well, to transform it over the winter.ā€
11. Yuki Tsunoda [28]: Was detained at the U.S. border for several hours in his PJā€™s before being released. On his career situation, he says heā€™ll keep ā€œdestroyingā€ teammate until he gets promoted.
12. Pierre Gasly [26]: With three more clean races to close out the season, he can become the first F1 driver in history to not cost his team a single dollar in damage over the entire season. JINX!
13. Lance Stroll [24]: BBC journalist Andrew Benson said the quiet part out loud: ā€œAston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has never quite said it in as many words, but people who know him well and have worked for him believe he bought an F1 team for his son, and his big ambition is for Lance to become World Champion.ā€ Newey gonna have to build a literal rocket ship and Fernando would have actually retire.
14. Esteban Ocon [23]: Doesnā€™t expect a repeat of Brazil: ā€œWe need to keep our foot to the ground, we won't be able to fight for podiums and nearly wins but last year here we finished fourth. But this year will be more difficult with the pace we have in the dry."
15. Kevin Magnussen [14]: On the tight midfield battle: "You can't be confident at all. We were not even thinking about Alpine at all and suddenly they are ahead of us. But since Aston Martin are struggling, now there are points available every race. Sixth for the teams means a lot." He also said the recent upgrades have given the car a ā€œbroader windowā€ in which it can perform well.
16. Alex Albon [12]: ā€œLooking forwardā€ to facing Carlos Sainz in the same machinery. ā€œPeople can take it two ways. They can either be threatened, or see the challenge. I definitely enjoy that challenge.ā€
17. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: Christian Horner says the Aussie was the ā€œbest driver on the gridā€ during his Red Bull debut in 2014, naming his 2018 Monaco win with an engine that dropped 30% of its power as one of his best performances.
18. Ollie Bearman [7]: Canā€™t run Haasā€™ post season test in Abu Dhabi because heā€™s no longer classified as a rookie. The rules state one senior driver and one rookie can participate.
19. Franco Colapinto [5]: Latest rumor is that Red Bull is currently pursuing him, and has the edge over Alpine.
20. Liam Lawson [4]: Trying to keep warm while being interviewed in Vegas. Guess itā€™s a bit warmer in Kiwi land.
21. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Could possibly land the role of Ferrari reserve driver for 2025. He was part of Ferrariā€™s driver academy earlier in his career, and was brought onto Alfa Romeo in 2022 by current Ferrari TP Fred Vasseur. Thereā€™s likely sponsorship $ to be had as well, plus boosting Ferrariā€™s presence in China.
22. Logan Sargeant [0]: After his test with Meyer Shank Racing in IndyCar: ā€œIt was definitely fun.ā€
23. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On missing out on a seat in 2025: ā€œIn the end, I still thought it was maybe a 50/50 chance. I got the call on Monday [after the Sao Paulo Grand Prix], but at least I know now. I just need to figure out whatā€™s next.ā€ Probably more bike racing, Iā€™d guess.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [593]: Another Lando quote on how the team fared this season: ā€œReflecting on what some have called a disappointing season, he realizes why people say it but says heā€™s proud of the progress the team has made, adding ā€œNot as many [missed opportunities] as people think. And people in general think it's been a lot worse than it's been, that we've been a lot quicker than we have been.ā€ Iā€™m not sure I agreeā€¦ I think this one was there for the taking.
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [557]: Both Charles and Carlos will test an experimental floor during practice this weekend to see how data for 2025 correlates on track. It adds a sizeable slot gap at the rear corner and has aggressive down wash added. The goal looks to be reducing ride height sensitivity.
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [544]: Reported rivals for using ā€œspecial protectionā€ on their skid blocks to prevent wear. The FIA has issue a technical directive outlawing the measure, which had allowed about half the grid to run lower and create more downforce.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [382]: 150 fans will get the chance to have their name printed on Lewis Hamiltonā€™s car for his last Mercedes race in Abu Dhabi. Enter here. I enter every F1 contest I see. Havenā€™t sniffed the podium yet though.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: Announce Glenfiddich Single Malt Whisky as new sponsorship partner. Now this is a sponsor I can get behind. Way better than Kit-Kat.
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine [49]: Watch the pit crew celebrate Brazilā€™s double podium. Will rock the pink livery for the remaining three races [hit the link, or see it below].
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [46]: Nailed the vibe with the ā€œHaas Vegasā€ moniker for the weekend. Love it. Very clever. Double points guaranteed.
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB [44]: Debuting a special glittery livery with aqua highlights [hit the link or see below]. Nice color. They should make the whole car aqua.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: Will have both cars ready and at Brazil spec ready for Vegas, despite early week rumors that they may have to sit out. Bravo to the mechanics.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Unveiled their special Vegas livery with a bright green flame look. Think it will help the car go faster? [Hit the link, or see it with Alpineā€™s below]

Tech Talk

  • The Customer is Wrong: A potential rule change is in the works for 2026 that would require customer teams who finish P5 for better in the WCC to design all non-listed parts on their own after a period of 3 years. Haas TP Komatsu hopes this gets rejected: "It would be a killer for the small teams. If Formula 1 wants as many teams as possible to be competitive, then it will reject this rule. What better thing could happen to the sport than David winning against Goliath?"

  • Groove Like itā€™s 1999: For the first time in 25 years, the brake disc groove has made a comeback. The diagonal cuts on the brake disc break up the continuous smooth surface, which creates more friction between the brake pad and the disc and consequently produces a sharper initial response from the brake. The drivers also receive more tactile feel through the brake pedal as a result, making it easier to adjust the amount of force they apply to the brake. Brake Disc(o) Groove sounds like a dance your crazy aunt was doing in the 1970ā€™s.

Off the Grid

  • More Legos: All 10 teams will be available in the new LEGO Speed Champions sets to be released in March. $27 each. Not bad at all for LEGO.

  • Hanging Up the Mic: Damon Hill will leave Sky Sports after 13 years.

  • Helmet of the Week Award: Ocon will be rocking the Captain America inspired look in Vegas. Not to be confused with the Helmut of the Week Award. Which has been given to Marko for as long as I can remember.

  • WEC: Mercedes will enter the World Endurance Championship in 2025.

  • 2025 Calendar: Next yearā€™s schedule is here. Three more triple headers. Plan your trips starting now šŸ”½

Quick Question (My answer)

I think Max clinches the WDC this weekend, but Charles gets the win.

VEGAS BABY!

Also, I couldnā€™t pass up the chance to include our second musical/F1 crossover for the second week in a row šŸ”½

Anyone going to see this? Early returns from Rotten Tomatoes are positive. šŸ“ø @stakef1team_ks on X

And because VCARB was left out:

Thatā€™s purty.
