PLP Season 2 Edition 27

Race Weekend

The 4th of July came a few days early because boy did we have some fireworks last weekend. If you missed the race be sure to watch the highlights to catch what was undoubtedly the most dramatic moment of the season thus far. An epic inchident between Verstappen and the chasing Norris resulted in shredded tires on both cars, knocking Max down the order and Lando out of the race when just seconds earlier they both had P1 in their sights. Incredibly dramatic. Cut to me reenacting the Leo meme where heā€™s pointing at the T.V. as I saw the rubber and debris fly from the two cars and exclaimed ā€œHIS TIRES OFF!!!ā€ Now imagine if we get another Max-Lando front row this weekend at the British GP. Canā€™t wait for this oneā€¦

But in the name of Independence Day, less we not remind the Brits of the American holiday that gets their knickers most twisted with some fun facts:

  • Freedom was formally declared on July 2nd, 1776 but the Declaration of Independence was approved two days later. John Adams referring to the second day in July all those years ago: ā€œI am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festivalā€¦It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade with shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations.ā€ Bet he feels a bit silly now. Anyway, I hope everyone broke out their shews on Thursday.

  • Due to a savvy licensing agreement made decades ago, any town that plays music to accompany their fireworks display must legally play Bruce Springsteenā€™s ā€œBorn in the U.S.A.ā€ at least once before the finale.

  • One of the best spots to be on the 4th is up in a plane along the coast of Florida. That was me 10 years ago, gazing in awe at about two dozen separate fireworks displays dotting the landscape below while nursing the most debilitating hangover of my entire life.

  • One of those fun facts might not be true. But it sure feels like it is. Anyway, hope everyone practiced good firework safety and still has all their fingers.

Schedule for this weekend in EST. Thatā€™s right. America time. Not whatever itā€™s called across the pond. Probably tea time.

  • FP1: Friday, July 5th @ 7:30am

  • FP2: Friday, July 5th @ 11:00am

  • FP3: Saturday, July 6th @ 6:30am

  • Quali: Saturday, July 6th @ 10:00am

  • Grand Prix: Sunday, July 7th @ 10:00am

Austrian GP Recap

Sprint

šŸ„‡ VER - šŸ„ˆ PIA - šŸ„‰ NOR

DNF: None

The Sprint race foreshadowed the action that weā€™d see the next day, with the McLarenā€™s chasing Verstappen early. Lando put a great move on Max on lap 5, but quickly had it taken back when he left himself exposed to a counter move from Max. As a result, Piastri was able to overtake his teammate and move into P2. Behind, Mercedes and Ferrari duked it out with Russell getting the better of Sainz.

Also two things happened Iā€™ve never seen before: There was an aborted start due to some photographers being too exposed by turn 1, which led to a second formation lap as they were moved to safety. Also, the timing graphic disappeared at one point, leaving us all wondering.. ā€œSo whoā€™s where now? Whatā€™s happening? What is a car?ā€

Grand Prix

šŸ„‡ RUS - šŸ„ˆ PIA - šŸ„‰ SAI

Fastest Lap: ALO

DNF: NOR

Lando of The Day: NOR. Everyone agree to vote someone else for DoTD this weekend to anger the redcoats, deal?

This one had shades of 2023 early, with Max outqualifying everyone by four tenths and building a healthy eight second lead by half race distance, which were both quite impressive on the short Red Bull Ring. Merc and Ferrari continued to battle, with Hamilton having to give a place back to Sainz after overtaking off track, and more bad luck for Charles who took damage early and was never able to recover. Itā€™s like heā€™s been paying the F1 Ferrari Gods back for that Monaco win.

There was some good Alpine on Alpine action, which saw Gasly take the upper hand after what was a clean battle for a change. Piastri tried to climb after a lap time deletion in quali, overtaking Perez early who was suffering from sidepod damage that wrecked his race. Alonso took a penalty after giving Zhou a nice love tap. But not too much going on, untilā€¦

Lap 52 saw Max and Lando enter the pits, with a rare slow stop from Red Bull and a subsequent lock up bringing them closer together on the out lap. For the next 10 laps, Lando would hang within one second of his rival and test the overtaking waters. He made some lunges that were defended, with the papaya questioning the legality of the aggressive defending tactics that Max was using in the braking zone. Spectacular action came to a head on lap 64 with the contact heard round the Austrian mountains (it was actually quite light, but resulted in punctures for both. Julie Andrews could be heard yelling with excitement if you listened closely). Both cars limped back to the pits and Georgey took advantage, most likely saying something like ā€œWell donā€™t mind if I diddly doā€ in his head as he shot into P1 and secured the victory 8 laps later. Piastri passed Sainz and came within about two seconds but couldnā€™t deny Russell his second career win.

What a dramatic moment that wonā€™t soon be forgotten. Itā€™s really added to the build up ahead of this weekendā€™s race. There was a lot of opinions this week about who was in the wrong, with the talking head consensus giving slight blame to Verstappenā€™s aggressive defending. A lot of drivers came out this week and said it was just an unfortunate event in what was hard racing. We havenā€™t seen the end of this on track rivalryā€¦

British GP Preview

Drawing a blank here for what this looks like. Rotate it 100 degrees to the left and maybe one of those old school popcorn makers they used to have at your preschool? A stretch, I know.

This weekend we head to one of the ā€œcathedrals of motorsportā€ (according to the Brits... but for real, it is) at the famous Silverstone (pronounced ā€œSilverstinā€, if youā€™re a tea drinker) circuit, one of the fastest tracks on the calendar. Hamilton compared a flat out lap here akin to flying a fighter jet. Thereā€™s famous corners galore - Copse (means a small group trees) corner at turn 9, Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel from turns 10-14, (the latter two named for the medieval chapel of St Thomas a Beckett that was demolished in 1943 to make room for the Silverstone Airfield to aid the war effort), followed by the hangar straight (for a plane hangar, of course).

A big reason why motorsport took off after the conclusion of WWII - young men back from the war looking for something to fill the adrenaline hole, use their acquired mechanical skills, and maintain a sense of camaraderie had to look no further than the plenty of now out of service airfields ripe for conversion into race tracks. And thus F1 was bornā€¦ with the circuit hosting the inaugural World Championship on May 13th, 1950.

What else to watch for:

  • Red Bull is bringing a new floor and diffuser, hoping to provide a bigger step forward than previous upgrades did. Mercedes will have some improvements as well and will certainly be riding high after their first victory in a year and a half.

  • All eyes will be on Max and Lando after last week. Chances of another tight battle between the top two contenders on the grid right now are high.

  • Silverstin will have high tire degradation despite seeing the hardest tire compounds and rewards cars that have strong cornering grip.

  • Numerous reserve drivers will get a shot in FP1 - Bearman for Haas, Doohan for Alpine, and Colapinto for Williams.

Bearman Signs Multi-year Haas Deal

The speculation that hasnā€™t stopped since he hopped out of the cockpit in Jeddah has finally been confirmed - Ollie Bearman officially has a seat at Haas in 2025 & beyond, signing a multi-year deal with the team. His impressive drive to P7 filling in for Carlos Sainz a few months back at one of the calendarā€™s more difficult tracks made a big impression up and down the grid.

To Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, that drive solidified the deal but was just one of many factors in the decision. ā€œWe are almost restarting the team. Weā€™re improving and we have aspirations to be more competitive. We need someone dynamic, someone young, someone who is talented but has a really good head on his shoulders. For me, Ollieā€™s profile is the perfect match for where we as a team and where we want to go.ā€

Bearman was all smiles in front of the media with the news of this announcement, saying ā€œYou think of all the moments youā€™ve had in your career since day one, the amount of hours youā€™ve put in, all those wet days in karting, and those cold days with snow on the track, those early wake ups and missing a lot of memories with friends ā€“ it all becomes worth it. I canā€™t wait to see what the future holds. Itā€™s only the beginning.ā€

Haas has made some good strides this year. Agreed with Komatsu on this being a new era for the team, so makes sense to get some young blood in there and see what he can do. Thatā€™s the first rookie on the grid confirmed for next year, after no debuts this season.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [237]: On the inchident and why he didntā€™ let Lando through: "I could also stay home. Iā€™m here to win, not to finish P2. And when you are fighting for the win, why canā€™t you fight in a hard way? Thatā€™s not how people should operate.ā€ Max came out later in the week and said his relationship with Lando was ā€œthe only thing that I care aboutā€ and they have since agreed that it was a fun battle with an unfortunate result. Bromance back on?
šŸ„ˆ Lando Norris [156]: Clearly unhappy after the collision, he felt Max was at fault. ā€œI did nothing wrong ā€“ he was the one in the wrong, so heā€™s the one that should say something, not me.ā€ On media day he changed his tune a bit explaining how he was emotional after the race and filled with adrenaline, and said that Max didnā€™t need to apologize. They two have had a chat and cleared the air since. Bromance back on!
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [150]: Confirms the downforce from the teamā€™s upgrade packages is what was expected, but has brought some limitations that still need to be understood (bouncing being one of them). He thinks Silverstin will be another tough weekend.
4ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [135]: Happy with a ā€œbonusā€ podium. ā€œIn the last two weekends theyā€™ve been ā€“ or at least the faster Merc ā€“ has been a little bit quicker than the faster Ferrari [in] both cases, so we just need to make a step going into Silverstone if we want to fight up there.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [118]: Had a ā€œreally difficult raceā€ after his sidepod was ā€œcompletely destroyedā€ after lap 1 contact with Piastri. ā€œI was sliding like a duck all over the place.ā€ Ducks do be sliding.
6ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [112]: On narrowly missing out on what could have been his first GP win: ā€œIt hurts a little bitā€ adding ā€œThereā€™s a lot of what ifs and maybes, obviously starting from yesterday [after the deleted lap time in qualifying].ā€
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [111]: Dropped a ā€œYabba Dabba Doā€ on the radio after taking advantage of the collision ahead and securing his second career race win. Classic George. He called 2024 ā€œone of the bestā€ seasons of his career based on grabbing opportunities when they arise.
8ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [85]: Called his performance ā€œshockingā€ after he said heā€™d ā€œbeen pretty **** all weekend." He praised his teammate after his win and added ā€œEveryone at the factory has worked so hard this year to get a result like this. So big congratulations to the team, and to George, and well deserved.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [41]: Performance was ā€œnot good enoughā€ in ā€œvery longā€ Austrian GP. He received a 10s penalty for forcing Zhou off track in the late stages of the race.
šŸ”Ÿ Yuki Tsunoda [19]: Slapped with a 40K euro fine ($43.1K American) for dropping a the ā€œRā€ slur to describe the actions of a competitor in the pit lane during last weeks qualifying. He has since apologized, saying he didnā€™t understand the words exact meaning.
11. Lance Stroll [17]: Echoed his teammateā€™s comments on Austria after a P13 finish saying the team has ā€œa lot of work to doā€ and ā€œwe were lacking the pace to make much impact to our finishing position.ā€
12. Nico Hulkenberg šŸ“ˆ [14]: On his season best P6 finish: ā€œIt was touch and go, I was really pushing hard to keep Checo behind, but the last two laps my tires were really done... I almost lost the car completely out of Turn 10 in a big way, went onto the gravel a bit and then had a big tank-slapper.ā€ Oh dang the ā€˜ol tank slapper you say?
13. Daniel Ricciardo šŸ“‰ [11]: Says he and VCARB ā€œoverachievedā€ with a ā€œhard foughtā€ P9 in Austria. He praised the teamā€™s strategy, adding ā€œWe used our two hards to our advantage, pitting early and kind of securing our position against the Alpineā€
14. Ollie Bearman šŸ“‰ [6]: Will be back in the car for Haas in FP1 this weekend fresh off his contract announcement.
15. Pierre Gasly [6]: After passing Ocon during their intense battle in the GP: ā€œCiaoā€. Cold.. no love lost between these two. ā€œIt was intense. I mean, weā€™re racing, weā€™re Formula 1 drivers so youā€™ve got to race. Thatā€™s what we like, thatā€™s what we enjoy.ā€
16. Kevin Magnussen šŸ“ˆ [5]: Looking forward to this weekend: ā€œWeā€™ve steadily improved the car, that means we can keep up with the others. Silverstone anyway [is] one of my favorites, so Iā€™m looking forward to a good week.ā€
17. Esteban Ocon šŸ“‰ [3]: Disappointed to come away pointless, and said about the teammate battle: ā€œHard and fair racing. Nothing really to comment, it was good racing and thatā€™s it.ā€
18. Alex Albon šŸ“‰ [2]: ā€œWe do have some learnings from this weekend that we can take to Silverstone, however there are still some questions as I didnā€™t expect us to be lacking in performance this much.ā€
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: ā€œUnfortunately, we lacked pace to make up more positions, and it seems our tires are overheating quicker than our competitors.ā€ Itā€™s always about the tires.
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: ā€œI think this race has been our best session this weekend; there wasnā€™t much action where I was but, pace-wise, it felt a bit better than in the Sprintā€
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: ā€œI damaged my front wing on the first lap and from there I was praying for a Safety Car that never came. We need to find some more pace in the car.ā€ If Logan wins this weekend, weā€™re taking England by force. It would be rightfully ours.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [355]: Christian Horner thinks Maxā€™s 10 second penalty for colliding with a papaya was ā€œharshā€, adding ā€œIt looked like there was enough space up there for Lando and heā€™d already had the violation with the four-strikes of track limits. But one of those things.ā€
šŸ„ˆFerrari [291]: TP Vasseur hoping for a ā€œsanity checkā€ this weekend. He hopes to sort out issues in practice and isnā€™t as down on car performance as some of the Tifosi seem to be.
šŸ„‰McLaren [268]: TP Stella on the collision aftermath: ā€œThe entire world knows who is responsible. The fact is, we have so much respect for Red Bull, so much respect for Max, they donā€™t need to do this... This is a way to almost compromise your reputation. Why would you do that?ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [196]: Toto Wolff on his ā€œembarrassingā€ radio message: ā€œThe single dumbest thing Iā€™ve doneā€. After the collision out front, Toto jumped on the radio and said ā€œYou can win this Georgeā€ while he was in a braking zone. Russell responded with ā€œJust let me ******* drive!ā€ Toto later apologized and Russell replied ā€œYou got very excited there Toto.ā€ Never talk in the braking zone!
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [58]: Ex-Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell will take over as CEO. Also, more Newey rumors swirling this week after he took a private tour of the teamā€™s facilities recently.
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [30]: CEO Bayer says the team is ā€œnot in a hurryā€ to confirm who will drive alongside Yuki in 2025, and that the team is ā€œluckyā€ to have junior options.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas šŸ“ˆ [19]: A great weekend saw them collect 12 points in the Grand Prix, matching their entire total from 2023. TP Komatsu called it a ā€œhuge statementā€. The team will bring more upgrades this weekend as well.
8ļøāƒ£ Alpine šŸ“‰ [8]: Bolsters technical team in Aerodynamics and Vehicle Perfomance, hiring new personnel with recent experience at Red Bull and Ferrari.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [2]: Special livery this weekend contains the names of all 1,005 team members. Canā€™t really see below, but theyā€™re on the flag.
šŸ”Ÿ Kick Sauber [0]: Bravi on the last race: ā€œWe eventually reached our targets this afternoon: we know these are just marginal ones, but the team must continue thinkingā€¦if we push all togetherā€¦we can get to the points.ā€

Tech Talk

  • Beep Boop: File this under unexpected: F1 cars have their own IP address.

  • Well Thatā€™s Expensive: Neat animation detailing the cost of an F1 car. Any guesses? If you said over $12M, youā€™re correct.

  • New Front Wing: McLarenā€™s recent upgrade brought changes to the front wing endplate to help balance load between slow and high speed corners. Getting performance out of the wing in different cornering situations is a generic problem that all teams are constantly balancing.

Off the Grid

  • Max Plays a Reverse Card: If you remember last week, British GP organizers blamed Red Bull dominance for poor ticket sales. Since last weekā€™s race, sales have picked up after the Max-Lando inchident. Max taketh away, and Max giveth.

  • More Red Bull Drama: The Christian Horner vs Jos Verstappen feud flamed up last weekend as it was reported that Horner denied Jos the chance to drive a 2012 car in the Legendā€™s Parade at the circuit. Jos on the situation: ā€œIā€™m completely finished with Horner. Itā€™s like a Kindergarten here.ā€

  • New Livery Alert: Red Bull vs Williams for this weekend. Whoā€™s ya got? I gotta go with Red Bull on pure principal, how can Williams do Logan like that just days after the 4th? šŸ”½

Quick Question (My Answer)

If I had to pick, Iā€™d give slight fault to Max as he showed shades of his old super aggressive style. But overall not that egregious.. I say we chalk this one up to hard racing and hold our breath when they inevitably have another tight battle on track (hopefully this weekend).

If you havenā€™t seen it, this is the Leo (not Charlesā€™ dog) meme from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Good movie. Tarantino, so itā€™s a bit violent. Good thing I was watching it in a theater with one of those big recliner seats or I may have passed out. šŸ”½
