Plus: Monaco Extension, Audi Needs Cash, 2025 Launch

In partnership with

PLP Season 2 Edition 46

No race to review or preview this week as we endure yet another break from the action, but thereā€™s no lack of F1 news to cover. Which is always nice when looking for things to include in an F1 newsletter, am I right?

Just one week until Iā€™m useless on Sunday after staying up to watch the Las Vegas GP live at 1am on the east coast. The Sphere is already hyped up with a slick F1 tire animation. Fasten those drain covers.

Quick Question!

Will you be staying up to watch the Las Vegas GP live next weekend?

Break Out the Champagne (And Your Yacht)

The race thatā€™s big on on history, tradition, and being fancy (but not actually that big on racing) has returned - the Monaco GP will remain on the calendar through the 2031 season.

The famous street circuit was on the first calendar back in 1950 and has remained every year since 1955. Staring in 2026, the race will move from the end of May and be held on the first full weekend in June each year (which means no more Indy 500 clashes).

Top F1 boss Stefano Domenicali says ā€œThe streets of Monte Carlo are unique and a famous part of Formula 1, and the Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning.ā€ And all fans dream of watching from a yacht while chugging champagne and being fed grapes while being fanned with a large palm leaf.

Audi Looking For Some Qatari Cash

The German automaker, who has yet to officially take the reigns at Sauber, is on the verge of selling a large stake in itā€™s owning interest of the team to Qatar, with an announcement expected ahead of the Qatar GP in two weeks.

Parent company Volkswagen AG is facing the possibility of plant closures and layoffs, and insiders are saying itā€™s becoming increasingly difficult to justify the F1 team investment when other areas of the business are struggling. Even more so that the two original architects behind the F1 move, former CEO Markus Duesmann and F1 R&D lead Oliver Hoffmann are no longer with Audi.

The move would explain the sudden reversal in the past weeks after numerous denials from company officials on sale rumors. Especially since the word is Qatar is willing to drop ā‚¬1 Billion on the project. Plus, Qatar is already the third largest shareholder in Volkwagen, owning 17%.

While talks are advancing thereā€™s no word yet on if the team would maintain the same image with a minority investment, or if the oil rich nation would want to slap their own branding on the car as well.

Everything coming out about the teamā€™s ownership moves just has a that stank, ya know? It seems to me like theyā€™re set up for a rough start when the takeover is official in 2026.

Carlos Sainz Srā€¦ F1ā€™s Secret Power Broker?

In what is a Silly Season mini bombshell reveal that reminds one of a move Littlefinger would have made in Game of Thrones, it turns out that Carlos Sainz Sr. leaked the news of Lewis Hamiltonā€™s move to Ferrari to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. F1ā€™s new Master of Whispers sought to move some chess pieces that would give his son Carlos a jump on potentially securing what would become the vacant Mercedes seat.

"So I heard the bells ringing two weeks before" said Wolff. "Yeah, the old man Sainz called me and said, this is what's happening.ā€ Old man Sainz, love it. Toto sent a text to Fred Vasseur asking about the rumor, and when the Ferrari boss ghosted him he thought ā€œVery unusual for Fred. He's a good friend. So yeah, I saw it coming." Some internet folks are speculating that Toto is using a bit of revisionist history to save face here.. but who knows for certain.

Toto mentioned there were ā€œa few drivers dadsā€ that ā€œrang him upā€ on the matter, so it looks like Sainz Sr has some competition at the underground rumor mill. The bad news was that the Mercedes top dog immediately turned his eyes to Leclerc and Norris on the current grid, but ultimately landed on Antonelli for next season. So old man Sainzā€™s move didnā€™t quite go according to plan.

The good news? He didnā€™t have to pay for the miscalculation with his life like one would in a worldwide phenomenon middle ages fantasy drama. And I donā€™t think Carlos was going to get the seat anyway, so it was honestly probably worth a shot. Just gotta remember to watch what you say around F1 dads.

2025 Launch Event is a GO

The 10 team, 20 driver car launch event for next season is officially on and will take place at the O2 in London on February 18th next year. For the first time in history, all teams will debut their 2025 cars liveries to celebrate 75 years of Formula 1. Hoping for a little more bright paint and less carbon fiber to set them apart. Think more Stake and Less Alpine from this year. Except, ya know.. make the car actually fast. Though truth be told I kinda like the carbon fiber look.

The event will be produced by BrianBurkeCreative, along with Stufish Entertainment Architects, DX7 Design and production company 1826 - the same group who was behind the (some say over the top) opening and closing ceremonies for the 2023 Las Vegas GP. Brian Burke himself on the event: ā€œThrough our collaboration with all 10 teams, fans can be assured weā€™ll be delivering a truly exciting live experience combining the unveiling of the new liveries, interviews with the biggest names in F1, and cutting-edge entertainment. It will be a never-before-seen event not to be missed!ā€ I guess that guy putting it on would say that.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (for 50/75/100 pounds (thatā€™s British money) depending on the seat) to the spectacle that will include live performances, interviews with teams and drivers, interactive entertainment, and special guest presenters. The event will also be live streamed (around 3pm EST if my time math is correct).

Those prices actually arenā€™t too bad, if I was a Londoner I think Iā€™d pick up a cheapo one. Could be cool to see everything all at once, makes for easy comparisons between team liveries. Hopefully the livery designers donā€™t act like paint is going out of style and we see some cool designs. Just donā€™t expect to see anything new car wise. I do like itā€™s all contained to one day, no more trying to track all these different events that arenā€™t much on their own.

If youā€™re in the other boat and donā€™t like the idea, then Max agrees. When the topic came up on his stream this week he commented: ā€œI hope Iā€™m sick that week.ā€

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [393]: Participated in the Race for Mental Health sim racing event during the off week. Because naturally time off for Max always involves racing. His digital livery even had a shot of Landoā€™s car going off track in Interlagos with the caption ā€œThink Different.ā€ šŸ˜
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [331]: On what he must do to challenge Max in 2025 from The Race: Improve racecraft aggression, be more assertive off track regarding team decisions, and improve starts? Starts seem like an obvious improvement - but some think itā€™s more of a technical issue than a Lando one. His reaction times are usually quicker than Max, but Red Bullā€™s car is a great starter on low grip surfaces.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [307]: Thinks the teamā€™s tire management progress this year might actually hinder them in what was a strength in 2023: Las Vegas pace. The cold conditions last year turned their quick tire warm up issue into a strength with a 1-2 quali last year (which was negated by that unfortunate Sainz drain pipe incident).
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [262]: Visited ex-Top Gear host Jeremy Clarksonā€™s farm during the break, says ā€œNot sure Piastriā€™s farm will be happening any time soonā€ after failing to park a trailer in a barn.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [244]: Concedes that not landing a top seat for 2025 was an ego hit: ā€œIt hurt at the time, we all have egos, and I have a driver ego, and I couldnā€™t understand it at the timeā€¦But at the same time, it creates even more of a challenge in me, and it even makes me more excited for Williams.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell [192]: In the new Mercedes book, Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the Fast Lane, author Matt Whyman explains the differences between how the two Brits give feedback: ā€œWhere George is very prescriptive and very lyrical and describes things in a very accurate way, Lewis is much more emotional about his description of what is going on with the car.ā€ Surprising that George isnā€™t the emotional one.
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [190]: On that now famous Toto meeting: ā€œIt was the hardest meeting Iā€™ve ever had,ā€ Hamilton said. ā€œI needed to do it in person because thatā€™s what integrity is all about, but I knew it would be difficult. Ultimately, as humans, weā€™re hurt when things end. But I also know that our friendship goes beyond business. Thatā€™s how I view it, and I hope Toto does too.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [151]: Some outlets are reporting that heā€™s slated to return in 2025 after Christian Horner greenlighted the Mexican sponsorship deals for next season. Dolla dolla bills yā€™all. Though I bet Colapinto could bring in some cash tooā€¦
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Opened up about the numerous talks heā€™s had with Red Bull over the years, and how he has no regrets in never joining the squad. ā€œWhen you take a decision, you take it fully committed to that and thinking that is the best decision. No one has a crystal ball to know what is going to happen in the future.ā€
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [31]: On the benefits of flying private from Aviation International News: ā€œThe less stress you have outside of your jobā€¦the energy you can save on the travel side, it helps. You can focus on what matters.ā€ Nailed it, Nico. Same reason I always fly private.
11. Yuki Tsunoda [28]: Feels the red flag cost him a big opportunity in Brazil: "Just the safety car and the red flag came out, that was the point that went very down. If the red flag didn't come out, probably I would, at some point, have overtaken a lot of cars and maybe [been] P1, but it just didn't come towards us." Big ifs. But anything was possible that dayā€¦
12. Pierre Gasly [26]: In our second Jeremy Clarkson related post of the week - the Brazil podium scorer posed with him for a pic while one held a podium trophy, and the other held a beer.
13. Lance Stroll [24]: Gunther Steiner with some harsh words on his Brazil ā€œbrain fartā€: ā€œHe knew he did something stupid on the formation lapā€¦I think he panickedā€ adding that he doesnā€™t think Stroll ā€œwants to be an F1 driver.ā€ Kicking the man while heā€™s down! Watch Lance stick it to the haters once heā€™s in Neweyā€™s carā€¦ that would be something eh?
14. Esteban Ocon [23]: Got a surprise podium celebration from his SO after returning from Brazil. Easy winner for wholesome moment of the week āœØ
15. Kevin Magnussen [14]: It sounds like there could be a role for him at Haas next year as he says he and the team ā€œknow what they want to do.ā€ Enforcer, bouncer, overall intimidator? Probably something like that.
16. Alex Albon [12]: While he says Liam Lawson is in a ā€œwin-winā€ situation regards to next year (likely VCARB, but maybe Red Bull), but is hesitant to say he should join the big squad. ā€œDo you need to jump into the main team that quickly against Max? From my experience, itā€™s not a bad thing to spend a couple of years learning your craft a bit more.ā€ But if the chance did come up, obviously he has to take it.
17. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: Got some padel in with Max this week, and apparently they got beat by a 13 year old. Padel, itā€™s not pickleball ā„¢ļø
18. Ollie Bearman [7]: How the Brazil GP was a baptism by fire for the F1 rookies. ā€œI needed to stay on track the whole time, and unfortunately, I didnā€™t do that.ā€ Usually best to stay on track. But those conditions were near impossible for a newbie to excel in.
19. Franco Colapinto [5]: How he became an instant F1 hit. ā€œA lot of things have been happening. Itā€™s been good, better than what the team was hoping for which is always a positive.ā€
20. Liam Lawson [4]: Feature article on getting to know the young driver. On the first time he ever drove something: ā€œI cried! The first time I got in my go-kartā€¦just turning on the engine, I started crying. It was probably good that we got through that before going to the track!ā€
21. Zhou Guanyu [0]: On the tough season: ā€œIt's definitely hurting a little bit overall for the career but that's the case now we just try to give it all our best.ā€ Iā€™d bet he could land in another series, he has strong sponsorship backing. Plus the car is doody.
22. Logan Sargeant [0]: Meyer Shenk Racing of IndyCar teased an upcoming test for the former Williams driver on social media.
23. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Just Bottas Things: Completed an Ironman triathlon in the ā€œcomfortā€ of his own home during the off week by swimming 2.4 miles in his pool, bikng 112 miles on his peloton, and running a marathon on his treadmill. 11 hours and 7000 calories burned. Guys a machine.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [593]: TP Stella on missed opportunities this season: ā€œI think we got some learning, for instance, from Austria. We got a little too close. And the points we're missing from Austria, because of having had a proper collision and then being knocked out of the race, are points that we regret.ā€ He mentioned an Austin penalty he didnā€™t agree with as well. Gotta say I think he missed a few from the list though..
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [557]: Charlos and the team will be collaborating with Paramount on the release of Gladiator 2 later this year. Didnā€™t even know this was a thing and it comes out a week from today. I should probably watch the first one huh. No spoilers, please.
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [544]: Rumor is that Horner prefers Colapinto for the Red Bull seat while Helmut Marko prefers Lawson. While Horner might have more sway now, it may not matter since the Mexican sponsors want Perez.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [382]: A new book titled Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the Fast Lane from journalist Matt Whyman details the teamā€™s struggles in 2023 and early 2024. Topics covered in the book include what was supposed to be a comeback year, Hamiltonā€™s Ferrari move, and how the support off track can impact a race.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: TP Krack says this is the teamā€™s ā€œtoughestā€ season yet since theyā€™ve failed to reach expectations. The effort has turned to mixing and matching upgrades to try to find the correct path for 2025 development. Performance Director Tom McCullough: ā€œThe way the AMR25 developments are going at the moment, which is in effect an evolution of the philosophies that we've adopted, we're making quite good strides in the wind tunnel.ā€ He also added: ā€œHelp us Adrian Newey. Youā€™re our only hope.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine [49]: Itā€™s official: The team will use Mercedes power units and gearboxes from 2026 through at least 2030.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [46]: Former driver Romain Grosjean heaps praise on Komatsu for turning the teamā€™s fortune this season. ā€œItā€™s fantastic. It almost makes me feel like I want to race for them again!ā€ Key word, almost..
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB [44]: Will receive the RB20 gearbox and suspension from Vegas onward, which is expected to yield a .1s gain. Can this give them the edge in the midfield fight? Either that or Lawson keeps throwing elbows.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: After some big accidents in Brazil, TP Vowles says ā€œThereā€™s no team on the grid that can cope with five major accidents in two race weekends.ā€ The team is trying to do what they can within the parts and money constraints they now face to try to get both cars up to spec.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Binotto reveals the team had talks with ā€œstrong candidateā€ Mick Schumacher before deciding on Gabriel Bartoleto for the 2025 seat. ā€œI know him very well from the past, and I know strengths and maybe as well weaknesses, but certainly I think he would have been as well a good choice.ā€

Tech Talk

  • Aston Tech Shakeup: Technical Director Dan Fallows will step down from his role, but will remain with the team in some capacity. While he led last yearā€™s successful 8 podium effort, this year has been a struggle. Plus, ya know, Newey gonna come in and do his thing.

  • Red Bull Front Bib Cleared: The FIA paid a visit to Milton Keynes to investigate the teamā€™s front bib adjuster, which rivals had alleged was used to make tweaks in parc ferme. Their verdict was ā€œNah, itā€™s all good here. Case closed.ā€

  • Top 3 Strengths: Our hero @FDataAnalysis breaks down the strengths of the top three teams, based on telemetry data analysis from this season šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Time to Bless the Rains: The Kyalami circuit in South Africa has been given the green light to be upgraded to F1 status. Officials hope to have work done to get the track back on the calendar for 2027.

  • God Defend New Zealand: F1ā€™s newest pot stirrer Liam Lawson calls for the New Zealand national anthem to be played instead of ā€œGod Save the Kingā€ for McLaren podiums. The brand was founded by New Zealander Bruce McLaren in 1963. ā€œRed Bull play the Austrian national anthem and the team's based in the UK. McLaren's based in the UK, but it's a New Zealand team. It's completely bulls***, that's what it isā€ said the VCARB rookie. Heā€™s got a point. Check it out here. It def belongs on an F1 podium.

  • F1ā€™s Race Director Out: Niels Wittich will be replaced by F2 and F3 race director Rui Marques for the remainder of the season. Rumor is this wasnā€™t his decision.

  • Gimme a Break: In news related to everyoneā€™s least favorite Halloween candy, Kit Kat has become the official Chocolate bar partner of Formula 1 on a multi-year deal. Now Iā€™m well aware of silly partnerships that exist in the corporate world, but this is too far. Not only is Kit Kat a trash candy, itā€™s not even really a chocolate bar. Funny enough I had a dream about a white chocolate version a few days before this news came out, and it wasnā€™t so bad. Any dream analyzers wanna tell me what that means? Am I being unfair to Kit Kat here?

Quick Question (My answer)

Heck yea Iā€™ll be staying up to watch. Wish Lando was still in the fight though to make it more exciting, but thereā€™s a good chance Max clinches the title which could be cool. Would be better than his clinches the past two seasons where one was under confusion and the other was in a Sprint race. Vegas baby!

Just one more week until every die-hard-purist-OG F1 fanā€™s favorite race. I kid, but I think itā€™ll be a good one. Catcha ya next Friday for the preview.
