Hamilton Ends the Drought, Next Year's Sprint, F1 on the Big Screen
PLP Season 2 Edition 28
What a triple header folks! Hamilton standing on the top step of the podium for the first time in 945 days, and at his home race no less? Even this Yank was pretty excited to see it, sweating out those final dozen laps or so.
The past three races had three different winners (two being Mercedes, would have been hard to believe based on how they started), and for the first time in nearly two years there have been two consecutive races where neither of the winners were named Max Verstappen. Never been more bummed to have an off week. This season is SERVING, as the kids say.
Speaking of, is anyone watching Wimbledon? George is. Though tennis is one of those sports that is infinitely more fun to play than watchā¦
Quick Quiz!
Lewis Hamilton now holds the record for most wins at any track after taking P1 last weekend at Silverstone. How many times has he won there? |
British GP Recap
š„ HAM - š„ VER - š„ NOR
DNS: GAS
DNF: RUS
DoTD: HAM
What a doozy this one was. Multiple battles for the lead, a mix of wet and dry, crucial strategy calls, and a real fight to the finish. A Mercedes one-two in quali kicked off the action, with Max making a slick move on Lando to move into P3 behind. Leclerc had an early move on Stroll, and it looked like he might finally be in for a solid race result. Cue Ron Howard as the narrator in Arrested Development: He would not see a solid race result. Max would see double on laps 15 and 17 as Norris and Piastri would get ahead and send him back to P5.
A lap later, with rain starting to trickle down, Hamilton would not throw away his shot and move past his teammate to take the lead. Burr, that was cold! The next two laps would be frantic with both Mercs running wide, and Lando taking advantage to move into the lead, with Piastri again following into P2 a lap later. Meanwhile, teams were making a tough decision on whether to box for inters - with those who did too early (Leclerc, Perez, Zhou) paying the price and those who waited a bit later (Merc, Lando, Max, Sainz) getting and edge. Cut to Piastri left out an extra lap with slick tires in the wet, losing massive amounts of time.
The Brits hopes of a 1-2-3 finish were dashed when Russell was forced to retire with mechanical issues on lap 34. Lap 39 saw another crucial strategy call, with Hamilton taking softs, Verstappen mediums, and Landoā¦ softs? This call was much discussed afterwards - Piastri was flying on mediums and the team should have made the same call for Lando - and not waffled back and forth with their driver discussing it on the radio. Not only that, a slow stop saw Hamilton ahead once Lando exited the pit lane. Pulses were rapid over the next 12 laps. Max was quick on the hards, and moved into P2 on lap 48. He got close to Lewis in front, but Hamiltonās superb driving all day kept him in front as he out dueled the 3 time defending champ and took the checkered flag in first place at his home GP. What a moment. As LL Cool J said, āDonāt call it a comeback [heās] been here for years.ā
Hamilton!
He may not be young (for an F1 driver) but heās still scrappy and hungry: Hamilton was all emotion on the radio after the win, and couldnāt hold back the tears.
History has itās eyes on him: Heās extended his records with 199 podiums, 104 wins, and the first driver to win after his 300th start (this was his 344th).
Triple Header, Who tells your story? Mercedes had the most points over the last 3 races with 97, followed by McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, Haas with 83/72/50/20 respectively to round out the top 5.
Spa-rint should be coolā¦
Mark your calendars for next yearās sprint races. Only change from this year is that Spa will be swapped in for Austria. Austria seemed pretty suited for a Sprint race, but the more racing at Spa the better.
F1: The Movie
If you stuck around last weekend to watch the post race coverage (guilty, couldnāt get enough of the post race Hamilton P1 high), then you may have caught a teaser to next summerās must see movie event for any F1 fan, the Brad Pitt blockbuster (R.I.P to all but that one Blockbuster in Oregon) titledā¦ F1. Yup theyāre just calling it F1. Which isā¦ accurate, right? In terms of to-the-point descriptive movie titles, put this somewhere between āSnakes on a Planeā and āTitanicā.
If you missed it, check it out here. Queenās āWe Will Rock Youā accompanies some good looking action shots. While Iām not sure thatās the song I would have chosen, Iām not gonna argue with using a track from the greatest band of all time.
One really interesting tidbit: The mounted a 4K onboard camera to use for some of the full speed shots in the movie, when the typical ones are 720p. The better quality really showcases the speed of the cars, which can sometimes go unappreciated on race day depending on the camera angles. Then they cut to a fast corner closer to track level and youāre like YOWZA that was quick. You can see the one they mounted to Gaslyās car for the 2023 Belgian GP here š½
Just swap the graphics to the fictional APX team and voilĆ ! šø @fastestpitstop on X
Brad Pitt was seen shooting in the interview pen after the race, and the fictitious APX team has even been active on social media to build hype. Will be interesting to see how accurate to real F1 the movie is when it drops next summerā¦ Though based on the trailer, think more āTop Gunā and less āMicrosoft Flight Simulatorā.
Down the Grid
š„Max Verstappen [255]: Says the team made the āright callsā when managing the tire and strategy decisions that threw some other teams off last weekend. Down in P6 at one point, a fast last stint on the hard tire with good pit timing saw him fight back to P2, only 1.5s down to the winner Hamilton. Red Bull strategy + Max driving still delivering, in arguably the third best car at the moment.
š„ Lando Norris [171]: An excerpt of the radio between him and his engineer talking tire strategy for the last stint. A big criticism of McLaren last weekend was theyāre indecisiveness on tire strategy, when they should have all the data to make the correct call. The driver always has input.. but the team undoubtedly had a bad day.
š„Charles Leclerc [150]: After another weekend to forget, says āI donāt even know what to say anymore.ā Itās the third time in the last four races heās been lapped. The Monaco curse continuesā¦ Ferrari needs to use this week off to fix their issues, or itās more Sad Boy blues for Charles. Pain.
4ļøā£ Carlos Sainz [146]: Thinks the team has lost ātwo or three monthsā of development after being forced to revert to the Imola specification for the British GP. Remember when Ferrari was Red Bullās closest challenger like a month and half ago? Pain.
5ļøā£ Oscar Piastri š [124]: Got hung out to dry when McLaren opted not to double stack, but understands the call: āI think that decision in that race is probably the hardest call you're ever going to have in motor racing. You've got two cars, one-two, separated by half a second with rain coming down. I don't think it gets any harder than that.ā
6ļøā£ Sergio Perez š [118]: Horner says Checo not scoring points is āunsustainableā after a āfrustratingā weekend. Without Max, Red Bull would be looking like a midfield team right nowā¦
7ļøā£ George Russell [111]: āReally disappointingā Silverstone retirement after starting on pole. The good news George? The car is quick. And he showed great sportsmanship as he was the first one over to Lewis to congratulate him on the win āØ
8ļøā£ Lewis Hamilton [110]: Very emotional on the radio after his long awaited 104th win, and saying afterwards: āThereās definitely been moments whereā¦the thought that this was it, that that was never going to happen again, so to have this feeling coming across the lineā¦Honestly, Iāve never cried coming from a win, it just came out of me. Itās a really, really great feeling and Iām very, very grateful for it.ā
9ļøā£ Fernando Alonso [45]: Happy with the āboostā for the team after a double points finish after a tough stretch of races. The team will bring upgrades to Hungary next weekend which will go a long way in determining how the rest of the season plays out for them.
š Lance Stroll š [23]: Believes the team āhave an ideaā of why the car is now feeling better. Itās seem unintuitive but these machines are so complex that the reasons for changes in performance can be so hard to pinpoint.
11. Nico Hulkenberg š [22]: Thinks Haas can fight to be 5th fastest after another āvery encouragingā P6. āThe performance is there with this update, and that makes me very happy and optimistic looking into the remainder of the seasonā
12. Yuki Tsunoda š [20]: Hoping that upcoming tracks will play more to their strengths: āSo far I think that we had enough high-speed tracks ā Hungary is a mix of low-speed [and] high-speed track, so hopefully we can use our strength to [be] back in the fight for the top-10.ā
13. Daniel Ricciardo [11]: Thinks the team is at a āshifting pointā in the season as they look to understand their upgrade situation. Heās keen on giving feedback that will help dictate what the car will look like later in the season.
14. Ollie Bearman [6]: If you listen closely, you can still here echoes of Crofy saying āAwlee Buhmanā drifting through the etherā¦
15. Pierre Gasly [6]: Bad to worse: After a 50 place grid penalty for taking a brand new power unit, he was only able to complete the formation lap after a gearbox problem.
16. Kevin Magnussen [5]: Blames a poor last stint for failing to join the points party, and also thinks he āpitted one lap too earlyā while battling Albon earlier in the race.
17. Alex Albon š [4]: Was happy with the pace and strategy calls all day and felt the best he has in awhile: āI had a lot of fun out there. The car was really good at the end there, one of the best itās felt in a long, long time.ā
18. Esteban Ocon š [3]: Not riding high after the race despite the Haas contract announcement. Said the team made āevery single wrong decisionā, such as being on inters when it was too dry and slicks when it was too wet. Those that went inters in the early stages of the race really paid the price. Also: Rumor is heās signed with Haas and an official announcement will come shortly.
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Gamble on inters early didnāt pay off, effectively deciding his race. āThereās still a lot of work in order to fight back in the points.ā
20. Logan Sargeant š [0]: Had his best result of the year with a P11 finish after a P12 in qualifying. āI was really quick today on the slick tyre. Iām happy with what weāve done, Iām happy with the direction we went with the car ā I think it was a good improvement.ā
21. Valtteri Bottas š [0]: Hoping for updates āsooner rather than laterā, saying about the race āBut, in any condition, we just didnāt have the pace today to challenge the cars in front.ā Money, fame, all good, but itās still gotta be demoralizing knowing you just donāt have a competitive car race in and race out.
Constructorās Corner
š„Red Bull [373]: How Liam Lawsonās testing for the team this week compares to Ricciardoās opportunity last year. Good āol Helmut Marko has suggested Checo could be out this year via a performance clause in his contract. Iād be surprised if it was Lawson.. but out of him, Yuki, and Dannyā¦ maybe?
š„Ferrari [302]: TP Vassuer doesnāt think the respec back to their pre-upgrade car will derail the season, but admits understanding why they went wrong is difficult: āWhat is tough in this situation is you don't have tests, proper tests, to fix it or to at least understand it. It is very difficult as a team to compromise or sacrifice Friday sessions when you know you are losing time during the weekend and say 'ok, let's forget about FP1, FP2 and focus on the mid-term.ā
š„McLaren [295]: Zak Brown admits the team got the strategy wrong, saying āBoth our drivers could have won.ā Another blown opportunity. They should probably have 3 wins this year. They left Piastri out to dry for an extra lap when the track was no longer wet, had a slow pit stop for Lando, and made the wrong tire choice putting him on softs in the last stint when they should have known medium was better from Oscarās pace on them. Brutal.
4ļøā£ Mercedes [221]: Plans on a double upgrade in the next two races before the summer break. After years of getting no where with development, Toto Wolff says āSuddenly everything that didn't make sense made sense. And the results of the development directions are back like in the old days. We are finding performance, we're putting it on the car, and it translates into lap time.ā
5ļøā£ Aston Martin [68]: Hired former Ferrari technical chief Enrico Cardile to be their new CTO. Rumors continue to swirl that Aston is back in the running for Newey as well. Just imagine the size of the bag Papa Stroll is willing to throw at him.
6ļøā£ VCARB [31]: TP Mekies: āItās clear that the fast nature of this circuit has not suited our car particularlyā, adding that they are no longer controlling the midfield. However, he noted itās very much a development race, and things can change quickly. It is kinda crazy.. This year weāve had Merc up, Ferrari down, Haas up, Aston downā¦ who will shine in the second half?
7ļøā£ Haas [27]: Rumor is Toyota is trying to make a return after a 15 year hiatus to F1 via partnership with the American-owned team.
8ļøā£ Alpine [9]: After a difficult weekend, TP Famin took one good thing away: āOne positive to come from today is our work in the pit-stops where we have made significant strides forwards.ā Alright well thatās something?
9ļøā£ Williams [4]: Vowles has hinted at a possible mid-season replacement for Sargeant after drawing a āline in the sand.ā P11 was a great step, but is it too little too late for Logan? Iāll expect to see a decision next month during the summer break
š Kick Sauber [0]: Itās all frowns down at the bottom. Team Rep Bravi: āThis race confirms that we lack pace, and we were unfortunately not able to reach any of the targets we had set for ourselves before the weekend.ā Bold prediction: P10 for Bottas in Hungary. They gotta get a point eventually, right?
Tech Talk
Power Move: Zak Brown has reportedly approached Red Bull about a potential power unit partnership in 2026, lacking confidence in Mercedes ability to deliver as they are set to also take on Alpine as a customer.
Merc vs McLaren: The key differences that allowed the Silver Arrows to pierce the Papaya People - beam wing options, sacrificing downforce to improve load balance and help left-front tire deg, and speedier straights.
PACE CHART! From the GOAT of F1 data analysis (@FDataAnalysis on X): Teams were quickest at different points in the race. Hamilton fastest overall, and won the race on performance and not just strategy (or lack thereof from McLaren - who was fastest in the wet conditions) š½

Off the Grid
F1: The Film Set: A deep dive from The Race on what it was like being on the āSilverstone Setā during the British GP with filming for the movie in full swing.
Time to Move On? Rumor is that Rolex may be out as the title F1 sponsor, with LVMH (known for its TAG Heuer brand) as a potential replacement worth $150M per year. Watch for drivers sporting the watches they are sponsored by immediately after the race ends - with printed versions even printed on their racing gloves.
No Naughty List: Watch Papa Stroll pull a reverse Santa Claus as he receives a gift from a fan and enters his friendship bracelet era.
Quick Question (My Answer)
9 times. Not too shabby. And yes, the answer choices were an intentional nod to the best number based joke of all time.
No race this weekend š„. But weāll be back next Friday to preview the Hungarian GP š. Until then, hereās a live look at Toto after back to back wins š½
