Offseason Moves, 2024 Wrap Up

PLP Season 3 Edition 1

51 Days until Australia

PLP Season 3! Checking in during the offseason here to say hope everyone is tolerating the current racing break and enjoying what is undoubtedly the worst of the four seasons. Iā€™ll say it again: Being hot is uncomfortable, but being cold? Painful.

Quick Question!

Think back hard (or watch some highlights to refresh your memory) - What was the best race of 2024?

Crazy how it was tough to narrow down to 9. Honorable mention to Spa which saw the Merc teammate battle, Hungary which had the Papaya drama, and Imola with Norris almost chasing Max down. Also I know Monaco the RACE was bad, but the result? Cā€™mon that was just so wholesome. Yay Charles.

F1 Hot Stove

If youā€™re not a baseball (a.k.a. the winter of the four major U.S. sports) fan, ā€œhot stoveā€ refers to the MLB offseason where various trades, signings, and other rumors get tossed about in discussions between diehards of Americaā€™s pastime who just canā€™t get enough. And while itā€™s not my favorite, Iā€™m going to officially extend an olive branch of respect to sandlot heads from someone who is a fan of a sport that is also sometimes called boring (they just donā€™t understand the strategy maaaannn. Ok, sometimes races are boring).

So what did we miss? Here are the biggest personnel movements since F1 wrapped six weeks ago:

Sergio Perez: We all knew this one was coming - but Checo is officially out at Red Bull. The almost 35 year old is not rushing to make a decision on his future: ā€œIā€™ll come back to F1 if itā€™s whatā€™s going to make me the happiest. Thatā€™s all I will consider, whatā€™s going to make me happier in the coming years.ā€

Liam Lawson: In steps Liam, who in the eyes of Red Bullā€™s top brass has shown more promise than poor Yuki after replacing Daniel Ricciardo two years in a row at VCARB Racing Bulls. Itā€™s a tall order but I do think he outperforms what Perez did last season. Plus we know he isnā€™t afraid to mix it up on track.

Isack Hadjar: As the old saying goes, every time a Kiwi gets his wings Isack Hadjar will step in for that Kiwi at Racing Bulls. The runner up in F2 last season behind new Sauber driver Bortoleto will join the expansive rookie class in 2025.

Franco Colapinto: Late 2024 hot commodity turned crash prone turned sponsorship magnet was announced as Alpineā€™s reserve driver for 2025. Bold prediction: Weā€™ll see him take over for Doohan at some point this season.

Mike Krack: The Aston Martin TP is out the head coach role, but will remain with the team as Chief Trackside Officer and focus on getting the most performance possible from the car. Andy Cowell will take over the role, alongside his current role of CEO that he took in October.

Angela Cullen: Lewis Hamilton is reuniting with his former Mercedes trainer. In interviews Lewis has called her ā€œone of the greatest things thatā€™s happened to me in my life.ā€ I wonder if she also crafted the elixir that keeps SLHā€™s coolness levels impossibly high. It would certainly help explain the quote.

Best Races of 2024

This was tough after the absolute bangers we witnessed last year. Hereā€™s my top 5:

  • 5 - Azerbaijan: Leclerc chasing down Piastri, a four-way battle at the front only for Sainz and Checo to crash out on the penultimate lap. Great excitement.

  • 4 - Austria: Had one of my favorite moments of the season with Lando and Max colliding. Thrilling battle and wild conclusion.

  • 3 - Silverstone: Hamilton breaks his ~3 year winless streak in his last Merc season in front of all the beans on toast lovers. Chills.

  • 2 - Sao Paulo: Wet, Wild, Wonderful. So entertaining. Ocon leading, Alpine double podium, Maxā€™s insane masterclass drive. Guys just spinning everywhere. We need at least one like this every season.

  • 1 - Monza: The unexpected 1 stopper from Leclerc to win in front of the Tifosi against a faster McLaren. Simply Lovely.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know in this weekā€™s question.

2024 Predictions: Howā€™d I do?

I dropped five bold predictions at the beginning of 2024. Letā€™s see how they played out:

My 2024 Driverā€™s Predictions

  1. Grid Order: See above. Max, Lando, check. Checo at 3?? What was I thinking? The only other one I nailed was Ocon 14th. The rest of the top is relatively close, but that ainā€™t too hard to get ballpark. Was clearly off on Williams, and Sauber.. and no love for Haas, dang. They proved me wrong.

  2. Constructorā€™s Order: I had RBR - Mclaren - Ferrari, so got the top three right at leastā€¦ I also had VCARB ahead of Aston (wrong), and all the midfield and backmarkers out of order. Unpredictable is good though, right?

  3. Lando Multiple Race Wins: Ok, nailed that one. Please clap. Admittedly that wasnā€™t too bold of a prediction to begin with.

  4. VCARB multiple podiums: Whoops. Should have said Alpineā€¦

  5. The fight at the top will be tight: Iā€™m gonna give myself points for this one. I did say excluding Max, and while it got interesting, it certainly was tighter than 2023. I also included this line: ā€œWith Leclerc down 2pts to Hamilton, heā€™ll score a podium [in Abu Dhabi] to edge his future teammate by 1 point - setting up an epic battle at Ferrari in 2025.ā€ Leclerc did score a podium in Abu Dhabi, beating Hamilton by 5s that race.. so thatā€™sā€¦ kinda cool?

Not totally awful overall, though the exact order of Drivers/Constructors was clearly tough to nail down. Should be even tougher for 2025. I donā€™t think Iā€™ll include a Racing Bulls podium in my predictions this time.

Got a bold prediction for 2025? Send them to [email protected] and Iā€™ll include them in the March season kickoff. Maybe a prize to the boldest one that comes true?!

Down the Grid

Max Verstappen: Some silly Max rumors I heard in the past few weeks: Aston has offered him a package of $1B, and he thinks Mercedes will have the best 2026 engine and could fancy a move that way. I donā€™t think the first one is credible, and the second one is interesting.. but I wouldnā€™t give either much weight at this time.
Lando Norris: Apparently someone driving Landoā€™s Ferrari F40 crashed it in Monaco while he was abroad. Imagine having to deliver that news? Last time Lando is letting that guy drive one of his whips.
Charles Leclerc: Was ā€œvery proudā€ of the team after they were able to fight for the Constructorsā€™ title up to the final race of 2024, and how they turned up the performance in the second half of the season after early struggles and a mid-season slump.
Oscar Piastri: Reflecting on 2024, says ā€œEspecially in the middle part of the year, I was very happy with the level I was performing at, and I think I showed some pretty clear progress from last [2023] seasonā€ and added that he made his life too difficult in quali - but was better at gaining positions back in the race.
Carlos Sainz: Williams has called his technical knowledge a ā€œblessingā€, saying it will play a crucial role for 2026.
George Russell: Verstappen revealed he spoke with George after Abu Dhabi in an attempt to ā€œstart again next yearā€ and clear the air after their fiery exchanges at the end of last season. Wouldnā€™t be surprised to see this rivalry heat up again.
Lewis Hamilton: ā€œToday we start a new eraā€ as he soaks in his first day at a new school - appearing at Ferrari HQ in Maranello for the first time.
Fernando Alonso: Have you seen Alonsoā€™s neck? I knew these guys needed a strong one but my goodness. Itā€™s yolked.
Pierre Gasly: Admits that the top teams are still out of reach despite the teamā€™s turnaround throughout last year. ā€œI definitely believe the car is going to be in a much better place to start with. And yeah, it just brings confidence to all of us.ā€
Nico Hulkenberg: Thinks his new team was able to make a ā€œbig correctionā€ to their poor performing car in Vegas last year, and says while there is more to optimize they are heading in the right direction.
Yuki Tsunoda: After being passed on for the Red Bull seat, Red Bull TP Horner has admitted it may be tough to keep him around. Seems like his last shot may be a mid-season call up if Liam really struggles. But idk, seems like a long shot.
Lance Stroll: Alonso on his tenured teammate: ā€œI am in the final part of my career and I try to help him as much as I can because he will be leading the team very soon.ā€ Imagine Max and Lance as teammates? Yea I canā€™t either.
Esteban Ocon: TP Komatsu thinks his new race engineer Laura Mueller is a personality fit for him: ā€œI knew as well as technical side, the personality side is very important, especially if you're a race engineer. So I could see the Laura/Esteban combination that could work really well.ā€
Alex Albon: Looking forward to the season - and even next season - to start ā€œfighting as hard as we can with both cars from the outset this year and looking forward to opportunities ahead in 2026.ā€ I was high on Williams last year, but with the whole squad talking about 2026 I think this year may be more like the last.
Ollie Bearman: Haas TP Komatsu thinks the young cub is a future Ferrari driver, adding ā€œEvery time he gets in the car, his feedback's been excellent. The approach has been excellent, speed has been great.ā€
Liam Lawson: Explains how one big overtake in the 2018 Toyota Racing Series in NZ caught the eye of Helmut Marko and helped propel him into the Red Bull junior program.
Jack Doohan: Rumor is his contract is only for the first six races. With Franco signed as the reserve driver and already bringing in some of Checoā€™s old sponsorsā€¦ oh boy. I feel bad for Jack, season hasnā€™t even started and it feels like heā€™s already under pressure.
Kimi Antonelli: The hype is high for the teenage wunderkind, and Toto Wolff is making sure to keep expectations in check saying he ā€œwill make mistakes.ā€ Not working Toto. Canā€™t wait to see what the kid can do. Consider my hype still high.
Gabriel Bartoleto: ā€œI want to be winning races in the futureā€ says the back to back F3 and F2 Champ. Welp, it ainā€™t gonna be this year. But heā€™s got a good pedigree: Heā€™s the fourth driver to go back to back years winning F3 and F2, joining Leclerc, Russell, and Piastri. Thatā€™s good F1 company.
Isaac Hadjar: Showing respect to his new teammate saying ā€œI look forward to working with and learning from Yuki, Iā€™ve always looked up to him, he went through the Red Bull Junior Program, like myself, and weā€™ve shared a similar path to F1.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

McLaren: TP Stella explained how the team would change their approach if they find both their drivers fighting each other for the title this year: ā€œWe do want to have that kind of problemā€¦we need to find solutions that, first of all, put the interests of the team and then the interests of the drivers. Weā€™ll definitely see some Papaya Rules come into play in 2025 which will make for great drama.
Ferrari: Hamilton was all smiles during his first test session driving a Ferrari F1 car, calling it ā€œone of the best feelings of my life.ā€ Please let the car be fast..
Red Bull: TP Horner insists that the team can overcome the Newey and Wheatley departures. ā€œBut the show goes on, and I think weā€™ve got the strength and depthā€¦We have that [with] what we're gearing up for in 2026 with our own power unit ā€“ is by far the biggest challenge and the most ambitious project this team has ever taken on.ā€
Mercedes: Toto confirms the team will continue with a black livery in 2025. Good choice.. black over silver imo.
Aston Martin: Won the ā€œWorld Championship for most updatesā€ last season. New TP Cowell says the 2025 goal is to be at least ā€œ90 percent certain [upgrades] are going to work on the track and meet our expectations.ā€
Alpine: TP Oakes is taking positives from the teamā€™s jump to 6th in the Constructorsā€™ last year, but says thereā€™s ā€œno magicā€ to continue moving up. ā€œI think youā€™ve got to be pragmatic, but you canā€™t also just be resting on a plan ā€“ youā€™ve got to be flexible as well.ā€
Haas: Laura Mueller becomes F1ā€™s first female race engineer, will be in Oconā€™s ear in his first Haas season. TP Komatsu thinks itā€™s a good match, calling them both ā€œdetermined characters.ā€
Racing Bulls: Racing Director Alan Permane says getting Yuki to Red Bull should still remain a target for the team.
Williams: Admits that 2025 is not the priority as they look to focus on 2026 and the new regulations.
Kick Sauber: Alessandro Alunni Bravi is leaving his Team Representative and Managing Director role. Another change ahead of Audi taking over.. The current writing on the wall sure doesnā€™t seem positive.

Tech Talk

  • Dirty Downforce: The GOAT @F1DataAnalysis explains how it affects aero efficiency and car performance. Downforce to push the car down = Good, drag that slows the car down = Bad.

  • Anothaā€™ One: Our favorite tech creator did his best DJ Khaled impression and dropped another great tech thread - this time about tire blistering and graining. Insufficient grip leads to sliding and grains the tire, which harms tire to road friction. If tire inflation and heat are too high, blistering is caused by air bubbles that form below the surface and causes uneven craters, harming grip.

Off the Grid

  • Will Buxton Move: The F1TV presenter is moving on from F1 to cover IndyCar for FOX in 2025. This Weekend Warmup fan is disappointed. Always enjoyed his perspective. Iā€™ll have to check out some IndyCar races nowā€¦

  • FIAā€™s Delicate Ears: The FIA released a guideline on fines and even possible championship point deductions for driver violations - including naughty words and things like ā€œdeeds or writings that have cause moral injury or loss to the FIA.ā€ I have some naughty words to say about this whole thing šŸ™„

  • Drive to Survive Season 7: Everyoneā€™s favorite docudrama returns on March 7th.

  • Helmet of the Week: Our first HoW (thatā€™s definitely awarded every week and never missed) of 2025 goes to Hamiltonā€™s new Ferrari cap šŸ”½

Iā€™m also thinking about getting some finger tattoos. Yay? Nay?
