Norris Shines in First F1 Race Victory
PLP Season 2 Edition 19
I hope everyone watched last weekend because we had an absolute BANGER. It was only a matter of time and now the waiting is over because Lando Norris has scored his first F1 Victory! A dramatic race saw blistering pace from the papaya people, who took the fight to Red Bull and landed one heck (pardon my language) of a punch. Ya just love to see another guy on top of the podium, if for no other reason than to hear a different national anthem.
But honestly it was great to see Lando get the first win he deserves. What an atmosphere it was after the race - Zak Brown fist pumping while red in the face, Lando crowd surfing, all the congrats he got from other drivers. A great moment to watch. And another reason to be excited? McLaren clearly took a big step, and with Ferrari bringing upgrades next raceā¦ could we be seeing 3 teams fight for victories consistently this year? Oh my. Iām downright giddy.
Quick Question !
Miami GP Recap

Sprint
With such a hype GP, it was easy to forget that the Sprint race has some good action as well. Alonso got sandwiched into turn 1 by a tight turning Stroll and a Hamilton torpedo on the inside, with the man of the hour Lando catching the shrapnel as he was spun out of the race. Howās that for foreshadowing. But for a good thing. I guess foreshadowing isnāt always for a bad thing. Feels like a negative connotation though, right?
Ricciardo finally had a good result - qualifying in P4 and finishing the race in the same position. He was in podium position at one point, but got passed by Perez. He defended P4 against Sainz for the last half of the race though, which was good action to watch. Other good on track action was Hamilton going at it with K-Mag, who was playing bully all day to anyone who dared to get in his way and received an astronomical 6 penalties over the course of the weekend. 2 more penalty points in the next 10 months and heāll be suspended for a race.
Hulkenberg picked up another 2 points, while Yuki squeaked into 8th, shooting ahead of Hamilton and K-Mag while they duked it out. Oh, and Max won, of course.
Grand Prix
We almost got a Max DNF on the first turn when Checo sent it down the inside and almost took out his teammate + Sainz. That was our chance, I thought. Little did we knowā¦ Piastri took advantage moving up to P3, and even passed Leclerc early on to move into P2. Papaya was looking spicy, and after a disappointing qualifying you could see early on that they had the pace to compete. Hamilton got into it with Haas again, this time battling Hulkenberg over several laps in a good fight.
Then on lap 22, the race took a turn as Max took out a bollard in a rare mistake on turn 15, causing a virtual safety car and bit a damage to his floor. 6 laps later we got a full safety car as Magnussen: Miami Menace took out Logan Sargeant and caused a full safety car. Poor Logan. This one wasnāt his fault. Rumors have been picking up about his replacement.. and like Landoās win it seems like a matter of time.
Because Lando had yet to pit, he got the benefit of a short stop during the safety car and was able to hold onto P1. He held Max off at the restart into the first turn, and began to slowly build a gap from there. For nearly 30 laps he kept increasing his gap, controlling his race perfectly. While his teammate Piastri had been running a great race, he came together with Sainz about 2/3 of the way through and suffered damage, which ruined a great performance. As he moved back up the field later on, his engineer warned to not be too aggressive - the last thing they needed was for him to cause a safety car and give Max another chance to overtake him.
But no more overtakes would be had at the top, and Lando took the checkered flag in P1 for the first time in his career. Que the āWOOOOOOOOā on the radio along with a āI love you all. I love you all. We did it!ā
More Like Lando Yeswins
So I learned this weekend that some of the more sour internet rapscallions had been using the moniker āLando Nowinsā, to which we can now officially announce is a dead meme. I declare āLando Yeswinsā the rightful heir.
While you can always point to reasons why a specific outcome may have happened in a race - safety car timing, Max assaulting an innocent bollard - this time thereās no denying that Red Bull got beat. No weather, no DNFs, no big collision - Lando and McLaren were just better. An incredibly impressive performance by the whole team. I canāt be the only one who was sweating the last half of the race, just waiting for any misfortune that would see the lead slip away - as Crofty seemingly tried to jinx the result as much as possible. You never mention the no hitter!
While Lando was all smiles after the race (band-aid on his nose and all), it was clear how much respect he has on the grid with many drivers coming up and congratulating him after the race.

All Eyes on Miami
TV ratings bigwigs looking at the ticker tape printouts of viewership figures (thatās how itās done right?) from Miami: āOh this doing numbers!ā
Last weekendās numbers for both the Sprint and the GP were records for F1 races in the U.S. - with almost 1M people tuning in to the Sprint and a whopping peak of 3.6M and an average of 3.1M watching Lando take P1 for the first time. The previous record was a peak of 2.9M and average of 2.6M for the inaugural Miami GP in 2022 - with numbers dipping for last yearās version down to just under 2M average viewers.
The F1 race even beat out the NASCAR contest on Sunday, which drew 2.3M viewers. Another positive sign when some had speculated that the DTS effect was waning. It certainly helps when thereās a fight at the top, but definitely a good sign for the sport in the U.S.
Down the Grid
š„Max Verstappen [136]: Was full of praise for his good mate in his inaugural victory, admits he could do nothing to stop āflyingā Norris. āToday was a bit tricky. Once we made a pit stop I heard what the lap times McLaren were doing and I was like, āWell, thatās pretty quick!ā. Max was all class in defeat, giving all credit to Landoās performance and not blaming any extraneous factors that happen in a typical race. Was great to see. Hope to see those two battling at the front more this yearā¦ with Ferrari in the mix as well?
š„ Sergio Perez [103]: Explains what happened on his aggressive overshot into turn 1 where he nearly took out his teammate + Sainz: āI hit the brakes there was no grip at all, like we saw yesterday with Lewis. Off-line here, especially into Turn 1, thereās no gripā¦and I did struggle quite a bit unfortunately.ā Good point - same exact thing happened to Hamilton in the Sprint.
š„ Charles Leclerc [98]: Admits the team now needs to ācatch upā to McLaren after their victory. On his poor start at lights out, āIt was very tricky. Checo [Perez] was on my inside. I didnāt have a great start, as soon as I let the clutch I had wheelspin.ā Canāt wait to see these upgrades next weekendā¦ with a new race engineer to boot
4ļøā£ Lando Norris š [83]: Never doubted a victory would come, but admits that P1 takes a āweight offā his shoulders. āIāve just been doing my job and executing my races, executing my qualis, doing what I can do best, and I knew my time was coming.ā Calm, Cool, Confidentā¦ Lando Yeswins ā¢ļø
5ļøā£ Carlos Sainz š [83]: Pit stop timing and penalty cost him in Miami, āWe could have won this race.ā He likely would have been P2 after turn 1 if not for Checoās torpedo down the inside. Later in the race he wasnāt happy with Piastriās apparent overtake off track.
6ļøā£ Oscar Piastri [41]: What started out as a great GP (running in P2 at one point) quickly unraveled after contact with Sainz during their tight battle. āEncouraging day in terms of the pace and obviously to get a win on pace. So overall mixed emotions, but very, very happy for the team.ā
7ļøā£ George Russell [37]: Disappointed with his P8 in the GP, saying he lost some positions after Checoās full send into turn 1. āIt was a pretty rubbish race from start to finish, in all honesty. I need to check the car, check the data because something didnāt feel quite right.ā
8ļøā£ Fernando Alonso [33]: Met with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem on what he says is discrimination against Spanish drivers after the penalties heās received this season.
9ļøā£ Lewis Hamilton [27]: Happy with some tightly contested on-track battles leading to a P6 finish in the GP. āSo much fun. Iāve really enjoyed this weekend race-wise. Itās been a lot of fun on track, [Iāve had] really great, tough, close battles.ā
š Yuki Tsunoda š [14]: Another great result with an under the radar P7 in the GP. āWe kind of expected we would have a good performance here but the most important thing is that we achieved it.ā
11. Lance Stroll š [9]: On his incident that knocked Lando out of the Sprint: āIt was an unfortunate incident, but there wasn't a huge amount I could do.ā Hmm.. not sure about thatā¦
12. Oliver Bearman [6]: Was reportedly spotted at a Miami club with his hand stuck in a comically large jar of honey
13. Nico Hulkenberg [6]: Hopeful that the upgrades the team will bring to Imola will get them closer to the RBs, saying they will ācomplete that kind of package that we were building since Shanghai. So hopefully those canā¦put us a little bit closer to the RBs, because they look really strong at the moment.ā
14. Daniel Ricciardo š [5]: All smiles after a stellar Sprint Quali and P4 finish, he noted the importance of qualifying higher to not get stuck at the back of the grid: Itās simple, we just canāt qualify at the back, thatās where we make it difficult for ourselves. Obviously complete contrast, great qualifying Friday and a great race, bad qualifying and a bad race.ā
15. Esteban Ocon š [1]: Pumped to score Alpineās first point this season. āWhat a raceā¦every lap was a massive pushā¦We need to keep doing these baby steps forward but, looking at where we were in Bahrain ā [17th and 18th] ā well done to the teamā¦ finally we come out of a weekend with some reward.ā
16. Kevin Magnussen š [1]: On a weekend where he got as many penalties as the team has points: āAll the penalties were fairā¦but I had to do my thing to protect Nico, make the space, same story as Jeddah.ā
17. Alex Albon š [0]: āOne of my most challenging racesā after poor qualifying and slow pace.
18. Zhou Guanyu š [0]: Didnāt think safety car timing was too bad, but had nearly 30 laps on soft tires that fell off hard. āI think the issue was that we lacked some top speed against Alex and I couldnāt really pass him on the straights, so the whole race was really compromised.ā
19. Pierre Gasly [0]: A tight teammate battle on the opening lap of the race, even through the tight chicanes at the end of the lap was some early excitement. Ocon vs Gaslyā¦ Old rivalries die hard.
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Hopes Miami was an āoutlierā after a P16 finish, as he felt the previous two races saw better pace.
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: On Magnussenās contact that ended his race, āI donāt have a lot to say, other than itās a very disappointing way to end my home race weekend.ā Added that P10 in the Sprint and being close to Q2 were positives to take away.
Constructorās Corner
š„Red Bull [239]: Horner says Maxās violence against the bollard caused a good amount of floor damage, and may have hampered his pace in the second half of the race. Considering, he thinks P2 was a good result. Itās hard to say if Max would have caught Lando without the damage, bottom line is Lando had great pace all day and you can always play the ifs and buts candies and nuts game. As Max said: āIf my mom had **** sheād be my dad.ā Amazing. š
š„Ferrari [187]: Testing their Imola upgrades Thursday and Friday this week, their first of 3 planned. Vasseur down-played the impact saying it wonāt be a game-changer, saying āA large part of the result, it's also coming from what we are doing with the drivers, the set-up of the car during the weekend, the management of the tires.ā
š„McLaren [124]: Zak Brown praises Landoās āoverdueā win in a āperfectā performance in Miami. āI think this is a very popular win amongst the fans, amongst the driversā¦ [with] how many drivers went up to him and congratulated him. He drove perfectly, the car was really fast.ā
4ļøā£ Mercedes [64]: Jumping on the Imola upgrade train as well with the goal to not only improve performance, but improve the balance for their drivers and adding downforce where itās needed. Weāll see what they can do, but after their start itās hard to get as excited about upgrades vs other teams.
5ļøā£ Aston Martin [42]: The sensitive nature of tires in Miami had them bail on running their new rear wing design. Due to lower downforce causing the car to slide more, they elected to sacrifice top speed for a set up that went easier on the tires, which was critical in the Miami heat. š ?
6ļøā£ RB [19]: Team boss Laurent Mekies says Ricciardoās P4 in the Sprint āhad been comingā as heās been making improvements that have gone under the radar. Guess that new chassis has helped, whether placebo or not, even though some tried to poo-poo it.
7ļøā£ Haas [7]: Komatsu noted the team didnāt have pace on the hard tire when the car was heavy in the beginning of the race, but is looking forward to Imola: āItās disappointing today butā¦for Imola, we have more things coming so weāll see what we can do there.ā
8ļøā£ Alpine š [1]: Team signs former Ferrari man David Sanchez in newly created Executive Technical Director role, after his brief 3 month stint at McLaren
9ļøā£ Williams š [0]: This one flew under the radar and would be an absolute doozy if it happened: James Vowles is in talks with Newey to return to his former team, having won championships with the team in the 90ās. File this one under longshotā¦ but crazier things have happenedā¦
š Kick Sauber [0]: Hulkenberg says Andreas Seidl played a large role in bringing him to Audi next year, noting his key role with the team and straightforward approach.
Tech Talk
McLarenās MCL clearly benefited from itās aero efficiency upgrades via a new floor and sidepods, which were worth about .4s of lap time in Miami for Norris. Piastri was running with half the available upgrades and will get the full set in Miami.
Ferrari is bringing a new floor and sidepods to Imola designed to increase load points and improve aero efficiency, which will aim to unlock .3s per lap. Tip if you ever find yourself building an F1 car: Itās all about that aero efficiency, baby.
Ferrari tested F1ās new wet weather tire spray solution this week, and by the looks of it, chasing drivers still wontā be able to see diddly-squat in the rain š½

Off the Grid
The House Judiciary Committee is officially launching an investigation in F1ās denial of Andrettiās bid to join the grid earlier this year. Good!
Iāve featured Zhouās cat here a couple times before, and Iāve heard the chatter... āIām not fond of cats, they scare meā and āWhat If Iām a dog person? You expect me to look at a cat?ā Well fear not because a new challenger has entered the ring and dare I say may be able to take the cuteness title fight to Zhouās kitty. Question (My Answer)
5 of course. Loved it. Landoās first win + hints of tighter fights at the top? More please!
Enjoy this moment yaāll. Weāll see if we get more drama next week, Iām definitely hopeful. Someone on the internets said it best, either weāll get an amazing 3 team fight at the top next weekend, or Max will get his sweet revenge and gap the field by 20s.
Lastlyā¦ did anyone else think he was going to break another trophy??? š½
