PLP Season 2 Edition 7

13 Days Until the 2024 Season Opening Weekend

Just think - at this time next week weā€™ll have actual cars-on-track testing to report on, with two full days in the books to overreact to. And while over analyzing based on test laps WILL happen (guilty as charged), donā€™t forget that two big story lines coming out of test weekend last year were Fernando dazzling in the fast Aston and McLaren looking like hot garbage - both of which played out as accurate in the first few races. Of course we all know what happened after that as McLaren out developed Aston Martin throughout the season, so testing isnā€™t the be-all-end-all. But first - Iā€™ll take my own advice and not look ahead because we have more car launches to cover from this week.

Quick Quiz!

Last week, the British GP was renewed through the 2034 season. What was unusual about the 1998 race at Silverstone?

Answer revealed at the bottom ā¬‡

Last Week: Over half got 1995 correct as the last year with a full grid. F1 needs to ease up on the bid denials and get back to 13 teams. More the merrier, I always say. Cars will have to get smaller though if they want to fit 26 of them on track.

Launch SZN: Part Deux

Pretty good overall.. Ferrari and VCARB lookinā€™ fresh šŸ“ø formula1.com

All cars are now officially live, with the latest 6 liverys shown above.

Livery, from the French livree, meaning to hand over. Used to describe the matching clothes lords would dispense to servants, and then adopted by London guilds as the term for uniforms they used to identify themselves. The more you know āœØ

VCARB

  • Floor edges and sidepods set to change before testing

  • Front suspension now pull-rod, with both front and rear systems provided by Red Bull

  • Radiator inlet changes to better control airflow that spills when capacity is exceeded at high speed, an extended lower lip of which helps prevent this spill from disrupting downforce around the floor and down the sidepod ramp

Aston Martin

  • Tech Director Dan Fallows: ā€œThereā€™s quite a lot of stuff under the hood which hopefully you wonā€™t seeā€ - including a likely heavily reworked floor

  • Reworked nose, now joined by bottom flap to create better airflow to the floor - but likely increased weight here in order to pass the crash test

  • Radiator inlet and sidepod changes, with extended mirror mount as a ā€œmid-wingā€, heavily ramped sidepod, push-rod rear suspension supplied by Mercedes, shortened gear box to move cockpit seating backwards.

Ferrari

  • Tech Director Enrique Cardile: ā€œa big departureā€ from predecessor

  • Red Bull-esque lower lip radiator inlets, a wider nose, and shortened gearbox casing for more volume around the diffuser (convert high velocity airflow under the car into slower air once it passes through)

  • More conventional undercut sidepod vs. previous out-wash style, more airflow around floor edges, changes made to improve last yearā€™s problem of lack of aero grip at the rear of the car at high speeds - which should give drivers more confidence to push it to the edge.

Mercedes

  • Reconfigured sidepod, pushrod rear suspension, cockpit moved back (Hamiltonā€™s wishes), rear wing changes to improve straight-line speed boost from DRS

  • New monocoque (vehicle structure where chassis is integrated with the body) and gearbox casing to achieve bodywork and floor changes, focus on improving previously unpredictable rear axle

  • Innovative new front wing, upper flap attached by single wire (attempting to circumvent detached wing element ban), look is quite an elaborate departure from the norm

McLaren

  • First car developed at new onsite wind tunnel, follow last yearā€™s development direction

  • Upper side impact bar now exposed, enhanced radiator inlet lip to accelerate flow down the sidepod, enhanced sidepod to enhance airflow through the underbody - where a lot of potential performance improvement lies

  • More radiator area moved away from front of sidepod, improving aero performance at the cost of raising the carā€™s center of gravity

Red Bull

  • Though they took an aggressive approach, they hope for no big changes in performance (obv, look at last year). Christian Horner was also present at the launch - no updates to report in the saga that started last week.

  • Changes including long cooling gulleys run back from the halo along the engine cover, a vertical sidepod radiator inlet, and more heavily undercut sidepods have some comparing it to Mercā€™s W13 and W14

  • Did not launch with testing floor, in an attempt to keep itā€™s most important aero elements secret as long as possible

DTS Teaser Drop

Looking cool as always šŸ“ø Netflix

Alright folks time to get hype because 1 week from today, weā€™ll all be able to sit down and binge last seasonā€™s F1 content. Does it matter that we already know the outcome? Nah. Or that itā€™s heavily produced almost to the point of manufactured drama? While itā€™s certainly over dramatized, I do enjoy the stories they present.. just take it with a grain of salt (fun fact: this phrase can be traced back to 77 A.D. to Italian author and philosopher Pliny the Elder, referring to the fact that a grain of salt might enhance the properties of an antidote to a poison. Thanks Plimy!).

The trailer looks have clips from Lanceā€™s pre-season injury recovery, potential bad blood between Alpine drivers (remember what Plimy said), Georgeā€™s Singapore crash, and a burning Haas. Notably missing from the preview? Max Verstappen. Some internet fellow quipped, ā€œItā€™s became Max doesnā€™t drive to survive.. he just drives for fun.ā€

Reader Question: Whatā€™s the deal with required pit stops?

Shoutout to our reader who asked, why are at least two different tire compounds required to be used during a race? Youā€™ve likely seen this scenario on a Sunday - someone stops but for the same tire compound, and now you know that theyā€™ll require another pitstop later due to the rule.

Going back to 2005 - tire rules for that season stated that only punctures and wet weather could initiate a change - encouraging teams to use hard tires with less grip, to reduce speeds and thus increase safety (This fact requires a deep dive of itā€™s own. The rule was changed again for 2006.) Anyway tires had become very hard as to last a whole race, and with refueling no longer allowed in pit stops as of 2010 (again, due to safety concerns), pit stop strategy basically disappeared.

F1 mandated that tire suppliers introduce tires with higher degradation, as a way to spice up strategy decisions and improve overtaking through some tires that were faster than others. Prior to the change, the more aerodynamically reliant cars producing dirty air made overtaking more difficult. With the change in place, pit strategy played a more important role and led to more overtaking on track when teams were on different tire strategies - which you see a lot of today. Tire strategy is yuuuuuge.

So bottom line? More pit stops + different tire compounds = more exciting racing.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen: Offers his take on Hamiltonā€™s move saying, ā€œI think it will look coolā€, and adding ā€œIā€™m happy where Iā€™m atā€
šŸ„ˆ Sergio Perez: Can he learn anything from when Rosberg beat Hamilton in 2016?
šŸ„‰ Lewis Hamilton: James Vowles on his time spent with the 7-time champ, ā€œHeā€™s like an octopus all over the wheel; heā€™ll change every setting all over the wheel near enough and explore it, but itā€™s what makes him incredible.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso: Admits Hamilton move was a ā€œsurpriseā€, saying ā€œIt was not his childhood dream 12 months ago no? Or two months ago I guess, because he had a different dream so nothing really to commentā€
5ļøāƒ£ Charles Leclerc: Initial feeling of SF-24 is better compared to last yearā€™s version, which he did not feel comfortable with after his first few laps. ā€œThe [2023] car was very, very difficult to drive. This year, the car feels healthier and in a better place.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lando Norris: New Monster lid for 2025. Also lowkey has the best driver logo
7ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz: While ā€œsurprisedā€ by Hamilton signing, he ā€œtotally respectsā€ Lewis and has no hard feelings towards him. He will ā€œmove forward and with still one year ahead at Ferrari, I want to close off my chapter here in the best possible way.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell: Martin Brundle declares the driver is ā€œready to pick up the mantle, thereā€™s no doubt about it at allā€
9ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri: Sky Sports commentator Karun Chandhok belives the Aussie could be a candidate to replace Hamilton via a contract ā€œescape clauseā€. This is classic silly season speculation.. I personally do not see it happening.
šŸ”Ÿ Lance Stroll: Admits that Alonso was ā€œjust quickerā€ than him last season, ā€œI have some ideas on what to work onā€
11. Pierre Gasly: Views the new Sprint format as an opportunity for ā€œgenius guysā€ to work on car set up over the race weekend, since they now have the ability to make tweaks after the Sprint and before GP Quali
12. Esteban Ocon: Whatā€™s in store for 2025? With links to Mercedes and reported interest from Sauber-Audi, heā€™ll have options. ā€œI feel in a good place at Alpine, itā€™s been many consecutive years. Letā€™s see what the future holdsā€
13. Alexander Albon: Red Bull has reportedly offered a first option on his future, and if he agrees then RBR would have the choice to bring him in for 3 years starting in 2026 after current Williams deal is up
14. Yuki Tsunoda: Believes that VCARB can ascend to fight RBR, ā€œAs a goal we donā€™t just want to be in the top 10. Last year we managed to grow in the second half of the season, but in the first part we struggled a lot, we expected better performances.ā€
15. Valtteri Bottas: Rebrand is a ā€œfresh startā€ for the team, saying ā€œI think it just represents the mindset of the team, that we do thinsg our way and thereā€™s no limit to what we can do. Itā€™s excitingā€
16. Nico Hulkenberg: Completed first pre-testing laps at teamā€™s Silverstone Shakedown. Shakedown refers to the first run a new car makes on track - not a dance battle between drivers like we all were thinking. Itā€™s to confirm all systems are operational and that a driver feel comfortable in the car, and is not intended for full throttle push laps.
17. Daniel Ricciardo: Says rivals will now take revamped car ā€œmore seriouslyā€ as they distance themselves from RBR. In a sit down with Lawrence Barretto, Daniel said the goal is to fight for Top 5 finishes, with podiums possibly on the table. That would definitely cause other teams to take VCARB more seriously..
18. Zhou Guanyu: New lid for 2025. While liverys are hit or miss these helmets Iā€™ve seen so far have all been hits
19. Kevin Magnussen: On Ayao Komatsu at the helm, ā€œItā€™s not like Ayao comes in with a new car in his back pocket. It takes time to implement things. The way I see it is we now have an engineer at the helm of the team. Engineering is what this sport is mainly about.ā€
20. Logan Sargeant: Put on 5 kilos (11lbs in American) after draining 2023 saw him rethink training approach for 2024.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull: No decision on the Christian Horner saga just yet, with the team principal making an appearance at the teamā€™s launch event.
šŸ„ˆMercedes: Reports say Kimi Antonelli is likely first choice to replace Hamilton in 2025, with Alonso as a plan B.
šŸ„‰Ferrari: Technical Director Enrico Cardile reveals the SF-24ā€™s complete redesign ā€œeven if our starting point was the development direction we adopted last year and which saw us take a leap forward in terms of competitiveness in the final part of the seasonā€
4ļøāƒ£ McLaren: Zak Brown on car launch, ā€œEvery team will have made progressā€¦ the true testā€¦ will be qualifying in Bahrainā€
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin: Technical Director Dan Fallows says ā€œwe take the approach that Red Bull is absolutely beatableā€ and that finding lap time now comes down to ā€œreally small detailsā€
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine: Technical Director Matt Harman said during the launch, ā€œWe decided to take a very bold approach, itā€™s a brand new car from front to back. I think only the steering wheel survived.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Williams: Albon says the new car feels ā€œvery differentā€ in the simulator, so a ā€œdifferent driving style [is needed]ā€
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB: Ricciardo, Tsunoda, and Lawson - Inside the three-way fight for a 2025 seat
9ļøāƒ£ Stake F1 Team: Team preview - will rebrand spark a new era? A new era in neon liverys? Letā€™s hope so.
šŸ”Ÿ Haas: Enters the season with major changes with Ayao Komatsu saying ā€œWeā€™re such a small team, so if we donā€™t work as one, we have no chance.ā€

Tech Talk

  • A great deep dive thread from Sam Collins (@NorthHertsSam on X) on the drastic concept changes on the Mercedes W15

  • As @FDataAnalysis shows here, stable rules lead to a convergence in design, as teams ditch sub-optimal choices and adopt the ones that are working, which in turn leads to a convergence in competition šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Alpine reserve driver Jack Doohan says high testing mileage that will be accumulated this year makes him the best non-F1 driver option for a seat in 2025

  • Did you know thereā€™s a Ferrari Land in both Barcelona and on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi? I sure didnā€™t. The former has their own version of Six Flags Great Adventureā€™s Kingda Ka, among other thrill rides. Group field trip to Spain in the future?

Quiz Answer

D. Michael Schumacher won the race in the pit lane.

Issued a 10 second penalty for passing under a safety car, Ferrari was unsure if it was to be a 10s stop and go or 10s added to race time. The team called him into the pits to serve it to be safe, but in doing so he crossed the finish line before reaching the garage. The penalty was eventually disputed and rescinded, and everyone left a little confused. Classic rule ambiguity mix up and resulting confusion from the stewards.

Back next week with TWO days of testing to report on. Iā€™m absolutely giddy.

Next year Valentineā€™s Day idea: ā€œAre you Max Verstappen? Because youā€™re P1 in my heartā€ šŸ”½
