F1 75 Event, Netflix swooping in?

In partnership with

PLP Season 3 Edition 2

23 Days until Australia

Just three short weeks until opening weekend yaā€™ll. If youā€™re desperate for some action in the meantime, pre-season testing will run for nine hours each day from 2am - 11am EST Feb 26 - Feb 28.

Doubtful that even the hardcore fans will be pulling all-nighters to watch. But I plan on popping it on each morning just long enough to jump to some broad conclusions about the whole season based on a few flow viz paint laps.

Late night update: Trying to shake off that tough OT loss for the U.S. against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Finalā€¦ weā€™ll have to bounce back next year in the Olympics. I havenā€™t been that amped up since Leclerc was holding off Piastriā€™s charge at Monza.

F1 75 Launch

If you answered no to the quick question, letā€™s get you caught up on the 75th anniversary launch event this week. Despite rumors of some drivers planning on ā€œbeing sickā€ cough Max cough, all 20 showed up to the O2 in London to debut their liveries for the season, catch some music from MGK, and be entertained by some fella named Jack Whitehall.

While folks seemed to be a bit disillusioned about all the fanfare leading up to the event, it seemed to have won over some of the internet folks by the end. Whitehall was self aware about the day, quipping ā€œYou know your sportā€™s ridiculously minted when the book the O2 to show off cars that are all the same color as last season.ā€

There were historical montages, 10 seven minute car reveals where some hit harder than others, and quick interviews with drivers and team principals that at times resembled an ā€œFIA press conference in an arena.ā€ But the uniqueness of the event (that certainly canā€™t happen every year) was run smoothly with good energy from Whitehall, and it was useful in getting to the point in what is usually a drawn out reveal process over several weeks.

  • The famously sharp tongued Gordon Ramsey was asked about his thoughts on the cursing crackdown, but had the mic briskly yanked away as he dropped a ā€œso if the s*** hits the fan..ā€ šŸ˜†

  • Brian Tyler, the composer of the F1 theme song (banger) DJā€™d for Alpineā€™s reveal

  • Hereā€™s all the new liveries that were unveiled at the event. Some quick thoughts: The HP logo slapped on the Ferrari really is a travesty, their old wing was iconic. The Sauber neon green highlighter fade is pretty cool. Everyone seems to love Racing Bullsā€™ retro look.. not bad. Haas black letters on white alpine pink letters on blue pops nicely. Everyone else is pretty much the same? If you saw the cars last year, then youā€™ve basically already seen them this year. šŸ”½

F1 Broadcast Rights Are On the Move

ESPN is officially pulling a DOGE when it comes to their media rights contracts and has decided that itā€™s $90M F1 broadcast deal will be the latest victim of Elon and his cronies whoever makes those decisions at the worldwide leader in sports. The sports network has recent slashed rights to other leagues including the PAC-12 and MLS, and is rumored to even be reconsidering itā€™s $550M MLB deal.

Even if ESPN find it difficult to justify shelling out high eight figures for an average of $1.1M viewers per race, other streaming players are eager to jump on the opportunity. NBC is looking to reclaim rights for its Peacock platform - last airing races on their main network from 2012 to 2017. Netflix has been dabbling in live streaming lately as well, and with Drive to Survive already a hit itā€™s easy to see that race broadcasts on the platform makes a lot of sense.

As a fan of F1TV this is slightly troubling to me. If it goes through Iā€™m hoping to have the same level of access to all sessions throughout the weekend. Plus the live timing was clutch if youā€™re a glutton for number punishment like myself. And they better have their streaming act together because if their broadcast of the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson boxing match glorified dance battle was any indication, weā€™ll be watching the buffering animation more than actual racing.

Down the Grid

Max Verstappen: When asked about the new naughty language guidelines at the F1 75 event, he replied: ā€œYeah, I prefer not to speak about that. It might get me in trouble.ā€ Over/Under $100K in fines for Max this year?
Lando Norris: ā€œNo excusesā€ in the quest for both championships this season. ā€œWe proved last year that weā€™ve got everythingā€¦it takes to fight at the top and be the best. If weā€™re notā€¦then weā€™re just not good enough, but thatā€™s certainly not how weā€™re thinking of things.ā€ Pressure is all on Landoā€™s shoulders this year. Letā€™s see how he responds...
Charles Leclerc: Completed first laps in the SF-25 this week along with Hamilton at Ferrariā€™s private circuit in Fiorano. ā€œThe feeling was goodā€¦ I would be disappointed if we donā€™t win one of the two World Championships.ā€
Oscar Piastri: ā€œIf I wasnā€™t racing in F1, seing Lewis Hamilton win a world championship with Ferrari would be pretty cool.ā€ He was sure to reinforce that he said ā€œIFā€ he wasnā€™t racing in F1. Always good for a quote, that Oscar.
Carlos Sainz: Sums up how the drivers feel about the cursing crackdown: ā€œI think you can not be too tough on these kinds of things. Because you cannot understand the pressure and adrenaline and the way we feel in the car when we open the radio.ā€ Precisely. I mean how many F-bombs have we all dropped while going 65mph on the Parkway? Imagine 3x that speed into a corner with someone tailgating you even worse than a Jersey driver.
George Russell: Optimistic on team changes so far in 2025: ā€œWeā€™ve been more thorough than ever in terms of the simulator, just to ensure that weā€™re not going to fall into a new trap, and so far itā€™s a reasonable step.ā€
Lewis Hamilton: For the launch event, he picked ā€œinvigoratedā€ as the word of the day: ā€œI feel so full of life, and so much energy, because everythingā€™s new. Iā€™m just focused on whatā€™s up ahead. Iā€™m so proud to be a part of the team, something new and exciting for me.ā€
Fernando Alonso: Says the 2025 car is ā€œ90% differentā€ in terms of aero and aesthetics compared to last yearā€™s version.
Pierre Gasly: Sets ambitious goal of the team finishing inside the top five in the Constructorsā€™ battle. "I'd like more than that, but I've got to be objective and know that it's going to be a tight field, a competitive field, and I don't expect massive change compared to last year.ā€
Nico Hulkenberg: Acknowledges 2025 is a ā€œbuilding yearā€ ahead of the Audi transition. He says the teamā€™s Vegas upgrade as a big step and that ā€œhaving done the Abu Dhabi test,ā€¦I think the car performance wasnā€™t that far off from what I was previously used to.ā€
Yuki Tsunoda: Says he ā€œwasnā€™t super angryā€ at Lawson getting the Red Bull seat: ā€œMaybe I was prepared inside my head at some point. In the end, whether Iā€™m at Racing Bulls, VCARB or Red Bull, the things I have to do are the same.ā€ Poor Yuki. Maybe he still gets a shot if Liam really struggles.. but I actually think the Aussie will be solid.
Lance Stroll: I swear if Lance mentions the hockey game last night at some point this season then heā€™s on my s*** list.
Esteban Ocon: Appeared in a French comedy film released on Netflix last week, seemingly playing ā€œthe guy she told you not to worry about.ā€ Dang Este. I wasnā€™t familiar with your game.
Alex Albon: His goal for this year: ā€œI'd like to be fighting up at the top half of that midfield fight. We'll see how big of a midfield fight there is this year. I think it's going to be closer even to the top teams.ā€
Ollie Bearman: Check out his lid for the new season. Iā€™ll give you one guess which animal was on it..
Liam Lawson: The Aussie wouldnā€™t be outdone by the bear man: check out his cap here. Oh man this is pretty.. white with pink highlights? HOTW candidate right here.
Jack Doohan: Looking to ā€œembraceā€ the pressure of reserve driver Franco Colapinto waiting in the wings. Now Iā€™m picturing Franco stalk Jack around the paddock, hiding behind a skinny tree every time Jack looks over his shoulder.
Kimi Antonelli: Not interested in the ā€œreplacing Hamiltonā€ narrative: ā€œI donā€™t find it right to say that Iā€™m his replacement. He has done so much in the sport. I just feel like the next Mercedes driver, and I really want to make my own story.ā€
Gabriel Bartoleto: Focusing on adapting from F2 to F1 this season: ā€œEvery kilometer will be crucial to learning and being ready.ā€
Isaac Hadjar: Apparently the Racing Bulls drivers may give Max a run for his fine money when it comes to swearing - Helmet Marko has warned the rookie to contain himself on the radio.

Constructorā€™s Corner

McLaren: Word is the team has found a half a second per lap improvement on the 2025 MCL39 vs last years car. Scary if true.
Ferrari: The SF-25 has officially switched to pull-rod suspension which is lighter and has a lower center of gravity, but also has a complex effect on aero. It also looks to have changes to the front/rear wing, mirror mounts, engine cover, sidepods, and floor. Expect continued updates to all teamsā€™ cars before Bahrain testing.
Red Bull: Have former favorites improved on their issues with the RB20 last season? TP Horner says: "We managed to improve them during the course of the latter third of last year, and we'll see if we've managed to go a step further over these early races."
Mercedes: Toto Wolff has denied claims that Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS was close to ending itā€™s ties to the team.
Aston Martin: Adrian Newey on his favorite rules loophole heā€™s ever exploited while designing a car: ā€œI think if I had to name a single one it would probably be finding a way to use exhaust effect properly againā€¦I think it was somewhere around 1985 when Lotus started blowing the diffuser on their car, and thatā€™s a very powerful effect where you introduce very high energy air into the underside of the car.ā€
Alpine: Flavio Briatore says Franco Colapinto is ā€œone of the most important assetsā€ for the team. Poor Jack. Hope he silences the haters ON HIS OWN TEAM!
Haas: A change thatā€™s been highlighted for the 2025 car includes a larger cutout in the rear wing to mainplane transition. This area is the most inefficeint area of the whole wing - so the team is signaling theyā€™ll be trading some increased aero efficiency here for a sacrifice in downforce.
Racing Bulls: Setting expectations: Finishing higher than 8th on the Contructorsā€™ this year would be a realistic and respectable goal.
Williams: TP Vowles is bringing the hype for 2025: ā€œI think itā€™ll be the closest Championship youā€™ve seen. Basically impossible for it to get any closer than 2021. But I like where your heads at, James.
Kick Sauber: The team is looking to show progress from a two point campaign last year as Binotto leads a huge team transformation, saying ā€œa lot needs to be doneā€ to develop a ā€œwinning mindset.ā€

Tech Talk

  • Gearbox Req: The FIA is lifting the gearbox allocation limits for 2025, saying the ā€œreliability of current designs renders this restriction obsolete.ā€

  • Williams Updates: The FW47 is a ā€œstraightforward evolutionā€ of the 2024 car with the biggest change being the less abrupt sidepod ramp towards the rear. Theyā€™ve switched to pushrod for rear suspension, which have aero benefits of clearing more air around the diffuser wall.

  • McLaren Updates: The MCL39 is using a wider wishbone position to put a great emphasis on anti-drive, aiming to keep a consistent distance between the car floor and the ground. Mercedes tried this technique last year with limited success šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Familiar Faces: Former teammates Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are back on the grid - albeit as reserve drivers for different teams. Bottas will join Mercedes in the back up role, and Zhou will be Ferrariā€™s reserve driver for 2025. This is great news - weā€™re now clear to provide updates on Zhouā€™s cat throughout the season because itā€™s obviously very relevant to know about teamā€™s reserve driverā€™s pets.

  • Monaco Mixing It Up: The F1 Commission is looking to increase the number of required pit stops for the Monaco GP. Good! Nearly everyone got their required stop in during the red flag last year. This is a needed change that should introduce more strategy into what is a glorified parade these days.

  • Otmarā€™s Gambit: Former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer is looking to bring a 12th team to the grid.

  • Hungaroready? 900 people are working everyday to ensure the updated Hungaroring is ready to host itā€™s 40th GP by August šŸ”½

šŸ“ø @hungaroring_official on Instagram. Good thing they added the ā€œ_officialā€ to their handle, I canā€™t imagine the amount of bots out there that must be impersonating racetracks.

Quick Question (My answer)

I didnā€™t catch it live - but have been catching up by reading about the event and watching some highlights - Like Hamilton and Leclerc playing chess at their table.

Who wins this match up? I feel like Hamilton doesnā€™t have time to play chess. I would bet Charles is sneaky good.

Weā€™ll be back March 14th for our kickoff race preview. Woohoo! By then weā€™ll all be experts on how the season will play out after watching pre-season testing, no doubt.
