Quick Quiz!
Bahrain will see lights out at 6pm local time. Where was the first F1 night race held? |
Answer revealed at the bottom ā¬
Last Week: About 70% knew that Albert Park in Australia has hosted the most season openers, with 22. Best to get that long plane ride out of the way early I reckon.
Bahrain GP Preview
šø formula1.com
Weāve finally arrived at the 2024 season opener, with the Bahrain GP under way at 10a.m. EST on Saturday. If youāre reading this early on Friday, you can catch FP3 at 7:30am EST and Qualifying at 11am EST.
Itās the 20th anniversary of the Sakhir circuit (Yes, Alonso competed in that 2004 debut race and took 6th) which can be subject to high wind, allows for a good amount of overtaking, and is difficult to get right set-up wise due to the big temperature differences between sessions. The downhill tight turn 10 is the most challenging, the sweeping fast turn 12 is a highlight, and degradation plays a big role with harder sets of tires are required to handle the trackās abrasive surface.
Since the race is a day early due to Ramadan, we have the benefit of over-analyzing the first two practice sessions to try and see who might be Red Bullās biggest competition. Some notes from FP1 and FP2:
Ricciardo topped FP1 with Merc taking the top two spots in FP2. Mustā¦ notā¦ overreactā¦ since we donāt know the fuel levels and run plan details that teams testing
Zak Brown said that both Red Bull and Ferrari havenāt turned their engine power up yet. Iād expect them to be at the top of qualiā¦ and the race.
Haas are cautiously optimistic compared to a few weeks ago, while Alpine is looking perhaps worse than feared.
What else to watch for:
Whatās the real gap to Red Bull? Is it significant or has the competition got closer?
How tight will the top challengers be, and who will show #2 speed? Ferrari, Merc, McLaren, and Aston have all had their moment in testing and FP1 and FP2. But whoās got the best shot to fight for a win?
Best of the rest: RB or Williams? Can Stake move up the midfield? Will Haas surprise and Alpine be as poor as they fear?
Which teams have good 1 lap qualifying speed vs strong race pace? Itās all been educated guesses until now where we finally see what everyoneās got.
Also: Did you catch the new driver intro? Best poses are Lewis (Looking cool obv) and Bottas (bleached mullet and a stache? Heck yea). Honorable mention to team Frenchie, Zhou, Leclerc, and the Aston guys. Someone on the internets said Yuki was giving off mannequin energy and now Iām sitting here, replaying it over and over and cracking up every timeā¦ cannot unsee it.
Christian Horner Cleared by Investigatorsā¦ For Now?
šø Andrej Isakovic, Getty Images via theguardian.com
On Wednesday, independent investigators cleared the Red Bull team principal of allegations of inappropriate and controlling behavior towards a female employee. This seemed to conclude the month long saga, with the longest tenured team principal on the grid set to retain his position for the sportās top team.
In statements on the ruling, no details on the nature of the investigation had been released by Red Bull racing or itās parent company. We were left with only the conjecture and rumors that have been swirling over the past month, through which Horner has maintained his position of absolute denial of all accusations.
Then on Thursday, a Google drive link containing messages and photos bearing evidence against Horner were sent by anonymous email to over 100 people, including journalists, other team principals, Liberty Media, Stefano Domenicali, and even Jos Verstappen, among others. While the authenticity of these leaks is still to be investigated and confirmed, media members are reportedly getting messages from lawyers theyāll be sued if they publish the contents. Itās now certainly clear that someone (who has access to all these F1 email addresses) was not satisfied by the initial resolution.
Just when this story seemed wrapped upā¦ another bomb dropped. Weāll have to see how legit the already infamous āGoogle driveā really is over the next few days. The result will determine if RBR was trying sweep a serious problem under the rug, or if someone REALLY has it out for Horner and is taking extreme measures. Letās hope the truth comes out and the correct resolution is reached with respect to all parties involved.
Sauber Insists Audi Project is Not in Jeopardy
Reports emerged earlier this week that Sauberās planned partnership with Audi for the 2026 season weāre at risk of dissolving. CEO Markus Duesmann, a key advocate for the project left the company a few months ago, while this week Chief Development Officer Oliver Hoffman has also moved on due to a difference in views on the companies future with the new CEO.
Sauber quickly came out themselves to ensure that the project was still moving forward despite management changes, and Audi still plans to deliver the new power unit in two years time. Managing director Alessandro Alunni Bravi ensured āThere is a strong commitment from the Audi Group at all levelsā and the move to enter F1 āwas not based on a decision of single individualsā.
Speculation in the paddock is that the investment to ramp up the project has not been sufficient to build the team at the pace imagined by CEO of Sauber Motorsport Andreas Seidl. Bravi acknowledged the ongoing process saying, "We know that in order to become competitive for top positions we need to improve our facilities, to expandā¦ our headcount, to invest in technology. Itās a big step, of course.ā
If I had to bet, Iād say that the project continues to move forward as planned. Thereās bound to be hiccups with taking on a new partner. But if it doesnāt, and Sauberās F1 team falls apart - weād be left with 9 on the gridā¦ and that aināt right. Iām guessing F1 would quickly pick up the phone and try to make nice with the Andrettis..
Down the Grid
š„Max Verstappen: Says itās ātypicalā teams have raised alarm over team relationship with VCARB, saying āThat is a constant tactic in F1ā
š„ Sergio Perez: Team is ābreaking new groundā with the RB20, on solid testing says āwe maximized everything we possibly could and the car felt really goodā
š„ Lewis Hamilton: Says elements of teamās preparation for 2024 testing some of āthe best Iāve ever seenā, adding āIām really excited for the start of the seasonā¦ weāll be heading into it in good shape.ā
4ļøā£ Fernando Alonso: Sees another dominant season for the defending champs, saying āI think after seeing Max and the Red Bull car this year, there are less chances for everybody to win a race this year.ā Well last year there was only 1, soā¦ yikes.
5ļøā£ Charles Leclerc: Impressed by the SF-24, says it was easier to drive from āvery first lapā, adding āI am confident that we definitely have stepped forwards in terms of tyre management.ā Itās looking like if anyone can sniff Red Bull at the moment, itās Ferrari. This could certainly change, and letās be honestā¦ the 9 other teams that arenāt RBR are waaaaay down wind.
6ļøā£ Lando Norris: No regrets on re-upping with McLaren before Lewis move, āI'm confident in what we can achieve going into the future and I'm very happy with where I amā
7ļøā£ Carlos Sainz: Looking for ābest chance to be world championā with next team, adding āIām going to take my time to make the decisionā
8ļøā£ George Russell: On team atmosphere since Hamilton announcement, says āSo far, it hasnāt changed at all really. I think everybodyās professional, weāve all got our job at hand and the engineers are just motivated on trying to deliver the fastest car possible and Lewis is still motivated to do the best job possible.ā
9ļøā£ Oscar Piastri: Despite minor technical challenges with the MCL38 in testing, he sees the team ātowards the front of the gridā
š Lance Stroll: On doubters who suggest his seat is due to his fatherās backing and not merit, says āEveryone has their opinion, but I do my talking on the trackā
11. Pierre Gasly: Admits car will need additional improvements to maximize performance potential, saying āItās not going to be an easy first raceā
12. Esteban Ocon: On the new car concept, āWe know weāre entering this season slightly on the back footā¦ the team is working incredibly hard to bring more performance to the car in the coming races.ā Think they can manage a 2023 McLaren-eque mid-season turnaround?
13. Alexander Albon: Helmut nixes his likelihood of landing Red Bull seat, saying simply āAlbon is not an option for us. He has a contract until 2025.ā
14. Yuki Tsunoda: Marko still sees both he and Ricciardo as options to move up to Red Bull
15. Valtteri Bottas: Praises CEO Andreas Seidel for changing āold schoolā mindset within team
16. Nico Hulkenberg: Eager to see what emerges for 2025 seat opportunities, and thinks a strong start to 2024 could open some doors, saying āHistorically, the bigger teams sort out that kind of stuff earlier and the smaller teams always take more time for one reason or anotherā
17. Daniel Ricciardo: Thinks fans got overexcited on team potential this season, saying thereās been gains but āif we want to be sure to fight for Q3s and top 10s thereās certainly still going to be a bit more to findā
18. Zhou Guanyu: Signs new endorsement deal with ASUS-ROG despite contract beyond 2024 - showing how heās still attractive to sponsors. Drivers gettinā that sponsor money plays a big role in racingā¦ deep dive needed in the future.
19. Kevin Magnussen: Insists that āspirit is goodā after Guenther departure, saying āhe was like family to most of us in the team here but at the end of the day weāre here to compete and to create results, and we havenāt had that progression that we were hoping forā
20. Logan Sargeant: On Bahrain GP, āWeāll be looking to build on what we learned during the test and get the car in a good window ahead of qualifyingā
Constructorās Corner
š„Red Bull: Whatās next for the team after Horner is now in the clear? (Or is he?) Investigation was the biggest challenge theyāve faced in quite some time - on or off track.
š„Mercedes: Tech Director James Allison: team will āmake a good fistā of chasing RBR in 2024. Always love learning new British sayings
š„Ferrari: āTotal changeā in car stood out during testing, particularly predictability in the corners
4ļøā£ McLaren: Norris: Team still āa very long way behind Red Bull and a long way behind Ferrariā after testing, but thereās āplenty of things that we've learned over the last few days for us to implement before next weekā
5ļøā£ Aston Martin: Tech Director Dan Fallows: box ātickedā after testing, adding āWe weren't 100% pleased with what we achieved in our in-season development last year. And we wanted to make sure we can compete at the top level in terms of in-season as wellā
6ļøā£ Alpine: According to AMuS, a German motorsports magazine, the A524 is āoverweight and aerodynamically inefficientā while slow on both long runs and a single lap - expect them to start the season near the back of the pack
7ļøā£ Williams: Some think they could be a surprise pick for the back of the grid after an unimpressive testing, which saw several technical problems
8ļøā£ VCARB: Thinks that F1 risks a less competitive grid if customer team relationships are cracked down on, since smaller teams donāt have the same resources as top ones. Well, obviously they would take that position..
9ļøā£ Stake F1 Team: āUNLEASHEDā, the 2024 brand movie. Green machine hype. Weāll see if it drives as good as it looks.
š Haas: Komatsu: faces āhuge responsibilityā in regards to 2025 driver line-up, and is focusing on developing a competitive car that will make drivers want to stay with the team
Tech Talk
Some TV broadcast changes coming your way this year:
1. A new system to pick out best team radio
2. Increased use of gyroscopic camera
3. More race alerts (such as weather, race leader)
4. More us of augmented reality for in race info (such as laps remaining)
Engineers at Red Bull built the worldās fastest filming drone, able to keep up with an F1 car and used to catch a wet lap from Max at Silverstone. Top speed is over 215mph and it can accelerate from 60-185mph in 2 seconds - compared to an F1 car which does 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds. Ok, this footage is sick. Imagine this angle on race day? We NEED it.

Off the Grid
New details in Guentherās Steinerās exit from Haas were revealed this week. According to Dutch journalist Jack Plooij, Guenther said he secured a $20M sponsor but told owner Gene Haas he wanted shares in the team to continue in his role. This was not accepted (clearly), so Guenther himself decided to leave the team. Pretty surprising honestly. But based on what Iāve read in Steinerās book (Iām about 2/3 through btwā¦ def not finishing before tomorrow) I can see how heād want to get some equity out of the work heās put in over the past 10 years. Especially with the team currently struggling at the back of the grid.
Toto Wolff has admitted that the fear of losing up and coming phenom Andrea Kimi Antonelli led to Mercedes not committing to Hamilton long term. The last young driver that Mercedes let go in favor of locking up their current drivers (Hamilton and Rosberg at the time)? Max Verstappen. Yupā¦ so you can understand their hesitation. Itās the age old tough sports decision, stick with the old guard or make a bet on the next big thing?
Quiz Answer
D. Singapore in 2008
Nothing like cars bottoming out and sparks flying down the straight in a night race.
Going to be SO dialed in for this race. Letās see if anyone can give us hope to challenge Red Bull this year. If you signed up for PLP Premium (thatās great!), then see you on Monday for a full race breakdown. If not (thatās ok too!), catch ya again next Friday. Maybe weāre in for a surprise with Maxās recent history in Bahrain? š½
