Race Weekend

Hope everyoneā€™s not too sleepy from that tryptophan yesterday (myth?) because remember weā€™re in the middle of the season ending triple header. Only two GPs and one Spring left in the 2024 campaign.

Max did what heā€™s been known to do and took down another WDC. But thereā€™s still plenty to be decided in the remaining races with the Constructorsā€™ up for grabs, and a very tight midfield battle with big bucks on the line.

Hereā€™s the schedule for this weekend in EST:

  • FP1: Friday, November 29th @ 8:30am

  • Sprint Quali: Friday, November 29th @ 12:30pm

  • Sprint: Saturday, November 30th @ 9:00am

  • Quali: Saturday, November 30th @ 1:00pm

  • Grand Prix: Sunday, December 1st @ 11:00am

Quick Question!

With this year's WDC locked up, who is your way-to-early prediction to take the Driver's title in 2025?

Max Wins 4th Straight World Driverā€™s Championship

Above: Max answers the question, how many gin and tonics are you going to have in the next hour?

There ya have it folks. In what has been an incredibly compelling season where the majority of races were unpredictable going into the weekend - the one who was predicted to have the best chance to stand on top of the season podium has done it again. Max Verstappen takes his 4th WDC in a row.

As impressive (and admittedly, a bit boring) his dominance was in 2023, the 2024 Max Verstappen Championship is perhaps even more remarkable. Having the far and away best car is one thing, but there were very few races for the RB20 where that was the case. The skill, strategy, and execution necessary to win without the best machinery was on full display.

If the title today didnā€™t make sense - the Red Bull squad could be seen dawning t-shirts with ā€œM4Xā€ printed on them, to represent his fourth title. Decent logo. I like. There should be more available in December, but looks like you can pick up an extra small size at the moment here if you want to buy one for your dog or something.

If Max had it his way heā€™d still be winning every race by 20+ seconds: ā€œI think in a way, of course, I still prefer last season; I enjoyed it a lot, but I think this season, definitely again taught me a lot of lessons. Iā€™m very proud of how we handled it also as a team. So in a way of course that makes it also very, very special, and a beautiful season.ā€ Christian Horner added: ā€œI think this has been his best and hardest championship and heā€™s shown maturity, heā€™s delivered on the days when the car wasnā€™t quite there and thereā€™s no one more deserving of this championship than Max.ā€

Celebration Scenes:

  • Watch Max get progressively drunker during the post race press conferences

  • Dancing to his signature EDM song before the team picture. Have we talked about this song yet? Itā€™s a banger.

  • Fellow drivers pay tribute to the champ on socials

Insert any superlative here, what else can you say. Max is the best in the world right now, and cementing himself as one of the GOATs. Seven different multiple race winners this season and he still stands on top. Incredible performance, gotta just sit back and appreciate the greatness.

Las Vegas GP Recap

šŸ„‡ RUS - šŸ„ˆ HAM - šŸ„‰ SAI

DNF: GAS - ALB

Fastest Lap: NOR

DoTD: HAM

So besides Maxā€™s ā€˜ship, what else happened in Vegas?

George Russell stepped up and put in a mighty drive, securing a convincing victory from pole over the feuding Ferraris, the disappointingly slow McLarens, and a charging Lewis who couldnā€™t quite make up the deficit he found himself in after a quali mistake saw him start P10. Cold weather once again proved the anti-kryptonite for Mercedes, who admitted that even they themselves donā€™t know why theyā€™re so fast when the temperature drops. Lewis was kicking himself, saying after the race that ā€œif I did my job in quali, the race would have been a breeze.ā€

I believe him, he was FLYING up the field last Saturday.. would have been a good show between him and George since no one else could keep up. But props to George for making zero mistakes and being super quick himself.

Leclerc challenged Russell early after moving into P2 on turn 1, but ended up pushing his medium tires a bit too hard. When seeing Carlos on his heels after being told there wouldnā€™t be a challenge he referenced the assumed team orders over the radio and said ā€œMaybe try in Spanish.ā€ He was HEATED after the race.

Most drivers started on quickly degrading mediums and had to pit early, as Verstappen and Hamilton made some early moves up the field. Sainz had a bizarre moment where he aborted a pit stop late after he had been advocating to come in. He ended up stopping a couple laps later, which ultimately may have cost him P2. Like his teammate, he wasnā€™t happy with the teamā€™s strategy calls. Checo had a stellar move on both Lawson and Magnussen on turn 14 on lap 38, salvaging something from the weekend. Max was in podium position with single digit laps remaining, but chose not to fight the faster Ferraris and cruise to his championship winning P5 since he was10 seconds ahead of Norris at the time. Hulkenberg and Yuki to P8 and P9 respectively, continuing to jockey for position in the tight midfield.

What else:

  • Watch George jump directly on the scale-placing-guy after hitting the victory T-pose.

  • Red Bull actually cut part of their rear wing to reduce downforce after bringing the wrong one to Vegas

  • Checo roasts himself from the Las Vegas sphere after being eliminated in Q1

  • Vegas had the most overtakes of the season at 77 - beating second place Spain which had 55.

Not quite the fight for first we saw last year, but still a solid race. Especially if youā€™re a Mercedes fan.

Andrettiā€™s Revenge: GM/Cadillac Set for 2026 Debut

In what looked like a near impossibility only a few months ago, weā€™re set for an 11th team on the grid starting in 2026. This one seemed to come together quickly from our (fan) perspective, lending credibility to what some are saying were certain conditions: Michael Andretti stepping back from the bid as well as Greg Maffei stepping down as CEO of F1 owner Liberty Media to get this deal finalized.

Michael Andretti tweeted ā€œThe Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team. Iā€™m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!ā€ While Michael has stepped back, Mario Andretti is set to serve in an ambassador role for the team. Maybe theyā€™ll still be able to slap their name on there somehow. We donā€™t know what their exact branding will be at this time.

The team will likely use Ferrari engines for their first two years, before developing their own starting in 2028. The move doubles the amount of U.S. based teams in F1 - as the sport continues to expand their foothold in the country that consumes 41% of all turkey meat consumed per year (though Israel holds the title in terms of turkeys (birds) consumed per capita).

Early speculation has Ricciardo and Bottas being contenders for one of the seats, as the team looks to possibly pair a veteran alongside a rookie for their debut season - with the rookie contender being Colton Herta at the moment. But a lot can change in the next year..

Qatar GP Preview

The penultimate race of 2024 heads to the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar - originally built for motorcycle racing. Weā€™ve got a night race this time, so the conditions should be way less punishing than last year.

Itā€™s a fast, flowing track with mostly high and medium speed corners. Even the hardest tire compounds brought this weekend will suffer under the high lateral load this track requires. Look for overtaking opportunities at turn 1 after the tracks only DRS zone along the main straight.

According to @brakeboosted on X, Trouble controlling tire temps here will lead to struggles over the full race distance. Teams must balance rear tire load to prevent slippage while avoiding any excess load that could overheat the tires. Red Bull could be strong since stiff suspension and high downforce are rewarding here. Expect a better performance from McLaren, a worse performance for Ferrari, and perhaps a decent quali but questionable race pace from Mercedes.

Jolyon Palmer adds: ā€œThe kerbs can be quite punishing, so drivers will need to be careful there. But conversely, as itā€™s a night race, that will help the tires a little bit compared to the afternoon heat.ā€

What else to watch for:

  • Ferrari looks to further close the gap on McLaren for the Constructorsā€™ battle

  • Haas, Alpine, and VCARB will continue to fight for midfield supremacy

  • Perez has a lot to prove.. can he finally bounce back in the two remaining weekends?

  • F1 Academy and F2 titles are coming down to the wire. Abby Pulling is looking to seal the deal in the womenā€™s series, while Bortoleto and Hadjar are fighting in out in the F1 feeder series.

Down the Grid

šŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøMax Verstappen [403]: It was a tougher road in 2024: ā€œIt was a very challenging seasonā€¦Incredibly proud of everyone, what they have done for me... So at the moment Iā€™m just feeling very relieved, in a way, but also proud.ā€ Simply lovely.
šŸ„ˆ Lando Norris [340]: ā€œMax just doesnā€™t have a weaknessā€¦ Congrats to Max - Iā€™m disappointed Iā€™m out of it, but Max deserved to win it.ā€ Says that every point going forward will matter with Ferrari chasing them down, and thinks Qatar will suit the car better than Vegas.
šŸ„‰ Charles Leclerc [319]: After a turn 1 move to get to P2, ā€œeverything went wrongā€. ā€œUnfortunately everything started to go very quickly wrong, because I pushed too much on the tiresā€¦On the two other sets of hard we were very strong, but we lost too much on the first [set].ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [268]: Says the points lost to Ferrari were ā€œnot idealā€ but says ā€œwe expected it could have been worseā€¦Hopefully Qatarā€™s a good weekend for us.ā€ It was last yearā€¦Oscar took the Sprint win with Lando P3 in 2023, followed by a double papaya podium in the GP.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [259]: On a confusing sequence where he wanted to pit but the team told him to stay out at the last second, ā€œWake up guys, come on!ā€ Now THATā€™S the Ferrari strategy calls weā€™ve all been blessed with in seasonā€™s past.
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell [217]: Was dreading that his brilliant drive would be interrupted: ā€œI was just waiting for something to happen and it didnā€™t. I guess our luck has turnedā€¦I donā€™t know how weā€™ve been so quick but Iā€™m just riding this wave right now.ā€ Weā€™ll have a much cooler race in Qatar than last yearā€¦ maybe Merc can make it two in a row.
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [208]: P10 up to P2 is always fun: ā€œI had a great time, when youā€™re progressing itā€™s always a great feelingā€¦ It felt like my old days kartingā€¦ really god balance in the car today.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [152]: Thinks he is ā€œclose to turning things aroundā€ after a Q1 quali exit and a P10 race finish in Vegas. ā€œwe understood exactly what happened yesterday in qualifyingā€¦we will work hard as a team to get back in the last two races.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Got overtaken late by Perez for P10: ā€œWe were in the points until three or four laps from the end so yeah, a little bit sad now.ā€ Just put on some Daniel Powter, youā€™ll be ok.
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [35]: ā€œVery pleasedā€ as Haas reclaims P6 in the Constructorsā€™. ā€œWe came through that well and offset ourselves a little bit to our main competition. I think that worked well and the pace was also decent.ā€
11. Yuki Tsunoda [30]: Feeling good going into Qatar: ā€œIā€™m optimistic that we can have another strong race, despite going from a track with long high speed straights and 90 degree turns to one with fast flowing corners.ā€
12. Pierre Gasly [26]: DNF was ā€œtough to takeā€ after a brilliant P3 in quali. Def feel partially responsible after calling Jinx on Pierreā€™s damage-less season. Tough break after a brilliant quali.
13. Lance Stroll [24]: It was a lonely race for Lance: ā€œI lost the radio the first lap so I was trying to give them some indication I was coming in but that didnā€™t happen properly so that ended my race.ā€ That WOULD happen to Lance. I can picture him talking to himself and mimicking his engineers voice to pretend everything is normal.
14. Esteban Ocon [23]: Was left hanging when he came in for his first pit stop - there was only one lonely mechanic standing there as he pulled through, forcing him to go around and pit again - ultimately landing him a P17 finish.
15. Kevin Magnussen [14]: The only driver to try a one-stop strategy in Vegas, said ā€œI donā€™t knowā€ when asked if he thought the strategy was worth the risk. ā€œItā€™s always hard to say coming straight from the car ā€“ it didnā€™t look good, but maybe when you go and look at things sometimes itā€™s different.ā€
16. Alex Albon [12]: After a power unit issue forced his retirement half way through Vegas: ā€œI feel like weā€™ve had a terrible, terrible time of it as of late. Itā€™s just frustrating. I was excited about the race, I felt like [we could score] great points hopefully.ā€
17. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: With Cadillac joining in 2026 and looking for a veteranā€¦ does he have a chance to return???
18. Ollie Bearman [7]: Hulkenberg missed some events earlier in the weekā€¦ could we see him for the fourth time this season if Hulk is out?
19. Franco Colapinto [5]: Another race, another huge repair job for the Williams mechanics after his quali crash. He had to be medically cleared to race the 50G impact: ā€œThe car wasnā€™t so good, but the guys in the garage did an amazing job to put it back in one piece. They almost didnā€™t sleep last night, and itā€™s for them why I race today.ā€
20. Liam Lawson [4]: Doesnā€™t expect to know his 2025 seat status until after the seasonā€™s conclusion. ā€œIā€™ll have a clearer picture after the season.ā€ Red Bull says theyā€™ll make the Checo call then as well. So standbyā€¦
21. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Had one of his best drives of the season, qualifying and finishing the race P13. ā€œItā€™s been a while since we fought in the mid-packā€¦ I feel we finally had a real chance.ā€
22. Logan Sargeant [0]: Has tested in IndyCar and IMSA this seasonā€¦ but no seat yet for 2025.
23. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On not being able to make the one-stop work: ā€œStarting on hards, only a one-stop strategy could have given me an advantageā€¦I couldn't make enough progress, and I focused also on playing the team game to support Zhou.ā€ Teamwork makes the Zhou P13 work āœØ

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [608]: TP Stella: ā€œThe best driver won the championshipā€ and adding ā€œwe are proud that we were challenging him this season. ā€œWe look forward to next year from this point of view. But the constructorsā€™ championship is open and our focus will be there.ā€ The remaining two races should favor the papayas more than Vegas did in their Ferrari fight.
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [584]: TP Vasseur was trying to avoid an intra team fight on track after Leclercā€™s push on Russell early: ā€œI think Charles was behind Russell, and when he tried one lap to push and overtake Russell he blew up everythingā€¦at the end of the first stint in four or five laps we lost something like 10 seconds, and then you canā€™t pit also because you are in the shadow of the mid-pack.ā€
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [555]: Maxā€™s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase says ā€œIā€™m really proud of [Max]ā€ after this season got intense at times. ā€œWhat you hear on the broadcastā€¦thatā€™s him with the adrenaline at the timeā€¦As much as he has this bravado, he will adsorb every piece of information that goes through his ears and thatā€™s his real strength.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [425]: Toto Wolff says Russellā€™s driving was ā€œfrom another planetā€ as the team ā€œcrushedā€ the field. My favorite radio after Georgeā€™s win went something like this - Toto: ā€œGeorge we will set something up in LA to celebrate when we get back.ā€ George: ā€œToto weā€™re definitely staying in Vegas tonight.ā€ Toto: ā€œOk Georgeā€¦ I will stay in Vegas too.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: Podcast: Sporting Director Andy Stevenson on working 600 GPs with the team.
6ļøāƒ£ Haas šŸ“ˆ [50]: TP Komatsu was satisfied with Hulkā€™s P8 to put the team back ahead of Alpine: ā€œIt was not an easy race to manage, but what really makes me happy is that nobody panicked. Everyone remained calm. Everyone, including the team at the factory, did their job, and to have achieved this great two-stop race with Nico to get eighth place is fantastic.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Alpine šŸ“‰ [49]: Former operating director Rob White has been tapped for the same role in GM/Cadillac/Andretti. Not sure what to call the new team yetā€¦
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB [46]: Franco Colapinto rumored to be considered for a 2025 seat.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: F2 driver Luke Browning will drive FP1 in Abu Dhabi for his first F1 test.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Team rep Bravi: ā€œAll in all, this weekend showed qualifying improvements, and we saw Zhouā€™s return to strong racing form.ā€

Tech Talk

  • Blistering Speed: Albon set the season top speed in Vegas at a whopping 369 km/h, or 229 mph. Yowza. No wonder he had power issues later on. Speaking ofā€¦

  • Too Much Tow: What first appeared to be some help from an old friend actually spelled disaster: Gasly picked up a tow from Yuki that allowed him to reach an incredibly high speed, only for his engine to blow up immediately after. Check it out in the telemetry data from the incomparable @FDataAnalysis šŸ”½ Does that count towards his damage-less season since it wasnā€™t his fault? Iā€™m gonna say no. Force majeure right there.

Off the Grid

  • Drake Curse: Itā€™s always bad news when Drake bets on you. The litigious rapper lost $210K betting on Charles to win in Vegas. I lost about .01% of that amount betting on Charles as well. Should have known as soon as Drake laid down his bet. Curses!

  • Itā€™s a Me, Monza: The Ferrari home race has extended itā€™s contract with F1 through the 2031 season.

  • Billion, with a B: Every F1 team is now worth at least a billion dollars. Ferrari leads the pack at $4.8B, down to Haas at $1.02B.

Quick Question (My answer)

Iā€™ve got that Ferrari feeling. Going to have to go with Charles, because, of course I would. I do think Hamiltonā€™s got a great shot though (to state the obvious). Red Bull might just be sandbagging right now when they say their car isnā€™t looking good, and Lando will have to prove that he can take the fight to the top (the experience this year should help). In any caseā€¦ 2025 should be LIT, as the kids say.

ā€œNothing to see here. Totally just a GM/Cadillac team you guys.ā€ šŸ”½
