Italy GP Recap, Race Ban, Antonelli Official

PLP Season 2 Edition 36

Hope everyone had a simply lovely Labor Day weekend. Hard not to with the race we got last Sunday.

While Labor Day marks the unofficial end of Summer, Iā€™d encourage everyone to remind the overzealous Fall Fanatics that thereā€™s still two weeks left. Theyā€™ll try to push their Autumn agenda on you with invitations to go apple picking, putting pumpkin spice in literally everything, and claiming theyā€™ve always loved flannel. Resist! Resist!

Note: these cozy crazies are not to be confused with people who get really into Halloween. Halloween rules. But that can also wait until October..

Quick Question!

Should McLaren start giving team orders to prioritize Lando's WDC bid?

Italy GP Recap

šŸ„‡ LEC - šŸ„ˆ PIA - šŸ„‰ NOR

DNF: TSU

Fastest Lap: NOR

DoTD: LEC

If you didnā€™t catch this race do yourself a favor and watch by any means necessary. Or at least hit the full highlights button below, because Monza was the highest point so far in a season thatā€™s already seen some incredible on track drama. An emotional hometown win? An unexpected result? Off setting strategies that took the grid by surprise? Teammate battles? Red Bull still stinking? This race had everything.

A tight quali found the papayas on top, and in the race (stop me if you heard this before) Lando failed to convert pole position into a lap 1 lead when Piastri pulled off a brilliant move into turn 4, sneaking past his unsuspecting teammate in what was a bold, but fair racing move that team boss Zak Brown was ultimately O.K. with. From there, Leclerc took advantage and moved up into P2, and was able to keep Oscar in his sights while the two Mercs race pace fell off hard compared to their good quali showing. When it came time to pit, Lando pulled off the undercut on Leclerc, who was upset with the team for responding when they were going to fall behind anyway.

With the hard tires graining and leader Piastri coming in for a second pit with 15 laps to go, it looked like it was a matter of time before Leclercā€™s tires fell off and heā€™d have to come in as well. But with the McLarenā€™s not making a big enough a dent early, it became clear that Ferrari was going to stick it out to the end. The laps counted down and the Tifosi grew louder and louder as they realized that their hometown team had committed to the 1-stopper. Piastri picked up the pace and closed a the gap with a couple laps remaining but it wasnā€™t enough - and Leclercā€™s perfect tire management and second stint lap time consistency led him across the line ahead by 2.6s to take the win in Monza.

Itā€™s like they picked a new pope

Phew! It was tense but with a few laps left it looked like Piastri would run out of laps, and the home crowd went full pasta party cheering Charles to victory. What a scene. I havenā€™t seen Italians this happy since the end of the Great Bucatini Famine in the 1980s. Donā€™t fact check that.

  • Full Emotion: Charles went full mamma mia on the radio, it was great to hear how much the W meant to him

  • Tifosi Frenzy: The podium was incredible with an endless sea of red, and who doesnā€™t love to see what appeared to be the whole population of Italy belting the national anthem. More pics of the celebration here to give you goosebumps.

  • So youā€™re saying thereā€™s a chance? Donā€™t look now, but Charles is 24 points back on Lando, who is 62 points back on Max. Itā€™s a long shot, but a guy can dreamā€¦

  • Papaya Rules: Another race, more McLaren strategy questions. Zak Brown said the team invoked ā€œPapaya Rulesā€ (the new phrase of the week) meaning they were free to fight cleanly. Commentator Will Buxton minced no words: ā€œIt baffles meā€¦you donā€™t get these chances every yearā€¦theyā€™re going to throw it away, and theyā€™ll deserve to at the moment, because theyā€™re just not playing it smart.ā€ Next time my wife asks me to take out the garbageā€¦ ā€œSorry hun, papaya rules.ā€ Does it make sense? No. Will it be funny to me? Yes. Will I get a dirty look? Also yes.

Slight back pat moment: Last week I predicted Ferrari nailing the upgrades (Iā€™d say at least half credit - they took a good step, but McLaren still has the faster car), a Leclerc pole (wrong), and a Leclerc win (correct!). Did I put my money where my mouth is and make a wager to capitalize on this proclamation? No. But did I take advantage of the free money glitch by betting Lando to lose the lead on lap 1? Also no. Hereā€™s another prediction: Iā€™m going to bet Lando to lose the lead lap 1 after he getā€™s pole next weekend and heā€™ll finally hold on to it. Book it.

K-Mag Gets Baku Ban

Next weekend, this seasonā€™s hereby declared ā€œBad Boy of F1ā€ will have to face the music: After receiving a 10s penalty for an incident with Pierre Gasly as he locked up into turn 4, the accompanying 2 penalty points puts K-Mag at 12 in a 12 month period. This means he wonā€™t be able to drive in Azerbaijan next weekend, and will be replaced by 2025 Haas driver and Ferrari Jeddah replacement Ollie Bearman.

Although he was in a good position for an overtake, his lockup meant he was not in a ā€œsafe and controlled manner through the maneuver,ā€ concluded the FIA. You have to go back 12 years for the last time a driver received a race ban, when Kevinā€™s former Haas teammate Romain Grosjean got one for causing a multi-car crash at the start of the 2012 Belgian GP while driving for Lotus.

Magnussen said the ruling made ā€œzero sense,ā€ adding ā€œI just donā€™t get the point, honestly. I saw Nico almost had 300km/h, almost hit the barrier with the contact with Ricciardo and he got five seconds. I got 10 seconds for this. At this point, I donā€™t know whatā€™s going on.ā€

He summed it up simply with an IG post that reads ā€œGood stuff: One point in Monza. Bad stuff: Race ban in Baku. See you in Singapore.ā€

Antonelli Spins Into Merc Seat

Last weekend in Monza, young whippersnapper Kimi Antonelli was officially announced as a Mercedes driver for 2025. The young Italian said reaching F1 is ā€œa dream Iā€™ve had since I was a small boy; I want to thank the team for the support theyā€™ve given me in my career so far and the faith theyā€™ve shown in me.ā€ Is he not still a small boy? I kid! But seriously I have underwear older than him.

The announcement coincided with an FP1 session, which lasted approximately 10 minutes before Kimi spun out on Parabolica and into the wall, bringing out the red flags and ending his session. Thanks fully he seems alright, though did admit he wasnā€™t feeling 100% afterwards. Who would when youā€™re facing 40Gs+ of force?

Toto hopped on the radio with an ā€œall good Kimi, all good,ā€ although obviously it was less than ideal (George sure thought so since it was his car). Wolff saw the silver lining and actually mentioned afterwards how their new driver was significantly faster than anyone else earlier in the lap.

Itā€™s doubtful any other driver was going as hard as Kimi, since he likely felt he had something to prove. Also, even the safety car had trouble with Parabolica last weekend. While Toto taking the positives was likely a bit of a PR spin, the kid sure is fast. Canā€™t wait to see what he can do next year.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [303]: While also battling an engine issue last weekend, he admits that the team needs to ā€œchange the whole carā€ to get back to their winning ways. ā€œThe pace was not there, we had a bad pit stop, I think our strategy was not on point today even though it wouldnā€™t have changed our position. I think we could have done a better race in general.ā€
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [241]: Says ā€œIā€™m not here to beg for someone to let me past.ā€ With 8 races remaining: ā€œObviously I wouldn't say weā€™re running out of time, but time is going away slowly. I still believe that we can do it; you know the pace is obviously great.ā€
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [217]: On how his brilliant drive and team strategy came together: ā€œMcLaren was faster on paper, but we pushed them into a mistake. We did everything perfect, even though we didnā€™t have the fastest carā€¦One stop was our preferred choice before the race, but everybody doubted after seeing graining on the Red Bull... However when I put the hard, I had a good feeling. I tried to put Lando under pressure to pit, and then when Oscar pitted, the car got much better. I could rotate how I wanted, and I knew the win was possible.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [197]: Was left clearly disappointed after a ā€œpainfulā€ race saw the potential second win of his career slip away. ā€œFrom the position we were in with the tires looking like they did, doing a one-stop seemed like a very risky call, but in the end it was right. Very, very happy with the pace, with the race that I managed to achieve, just when you finish second it hurts.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [184]: How he helped Leclerc: While running in P4, he was too far behind Lando for the undercut so his stint was extended. He reported that graining was improving which was critical info for Ferrari as they contemplated the one stop strategy. Yay teamwork! āœØ
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [164]: Believed he could have secured pole in what was a very tight quali: ā€œI could have had pole right until the last corner, but either way we didnā€™t have the race pace even if I had miracle-y pulled out the pole lap.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [143]: Says Max is now feeling the pain with the car heā€™s been dealing with for awhile: ā€œI really feel like Iā€™m in the same boat as Iā€™ve been in for the last eight, 10 races but now all of a sudden Max has come into similar issues so yeah, a little bit of a confusion there but it is clear in the data where the problem is.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell [128]: On what happened after falling down the order on the first lap: ā€œHe [Piastri] had the slipstream from Lando and when he pulled out in front of meā€¦I misjudged it, hit the brakes my side and I was locking up the rear tires and was about to crash into him, so had to take avoiding action and thatā€™s where it all went wrong.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [50]: After missing out on points by 0.2s, admits the team is ā€œdoing something really wrong.ā€ After a good start and undercut on Albon on the first stop, the second stop saw the two time champ fall behind the Williams and he was unable to finish less than 10s behind Magnussen.
šŸ”ŸLance Stroll [24]: Tough day at the office: Finished last after a late pit stop to attempt fastest lap came up 0.8s short. While lapping him, Piastri said he cost him a few seconds and said: ā€œLance was driving like it was his first go-kart race.ā€ Oof. Some spice from the Aussie!
11. Nico Hulkenberg [22]: Claimed Yuki should have seen him struggling in the braking zone during their contact. ā€œI think he could have saved himself, but he chose not toā€¦He was probably on the radio, knowing him.ā€ Well, not wrong about that second point.
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Tweets ā€œOne day Monza will love me backā€ after his poor record in four races there since his debut in 2021: DNS/P14/DNS/DNF.
13. Daniel Ricciardo[12]: Was ā€œsorryā€ for Hulkenberg contact, and admitted ā€œwe werenā€™t quick enoughā€ even considering penalties. He got 5s for the Hulk bump, and another 10s penalty for not serving the first one correctly when a pit crew member touched the car while the penalty was being served.
14. Pierre Gasly [8]: Defends Magnussen after he was tapped to trigger the ā€œunfairā€ race ban saying it was ā€œnothing.ā€ He added: ā€œIt was a bit of wheel to wheel and in the end I really didn't lose any time. I'm a bit surprised.ā€
15. Ollie Bearman [6]: Set to fill in for the suspended Magnussen in Baku. We saw his skills in a Ferrari... how will he fair in the slower Haas, on a much different track? Will be a good test for the 2025 rookie.
16. Kevin Magnussen [6]: Happy with the race and a P10 finish, but doesnā€™t agree with the penalty that resulted in his Baku ban: ā€œI donā€™t know whatā€™s going on with these penalties. I mean, whatā€™s the point? We had a slight contact into Turn 4, no damage on either car. It had no consequence, nobody lost anything.ā€
17. Alex Albon šŸ“ˆ [6]: On his drive to score 2 points in a P9 finish: ā€œIt was one of those ones where the tortoise wins the race and just slowly, slowly and I just knew I had to keep being consistent, make sure that front left didnā€™t open up. And then as Fernando was coming there was a bit of ā€˜Jawsā€™ music and then we just hung on.ā€
18. Esteban Ocon šŸ“‰ [5]: Taking the positives from a P14 finish: ā€œThere were some solid performance improvements from Friday to Saturday, which we will now need to understand better to be able to stay on top of the issues we were experiencing in Zandvoort.ā€
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Understood to be out of contention for 2025 Sauber seat, as the gap to his teammate has widened this year.
20. Logan Sargeant [0]: F1 exit was writing on the wall amid his struggles.
21. Franco Colapinto šŸ“ˆ [0]: The newest driver on the grid was satisfied with his debut performance, saying ā€œThe car was very strong, and I am very happy of course with the performance we had this weekend. I had a lot of question marks going into the race ā€“ Iā€™d never done more than eight laps in a row in an F1 car and today there were 53 to do with very high track temps.ā€
22. Valtteri Bottas šŸ“‰ [0]: On Monza at least being better than Zandvoort: ā€œwe went for a one-stop strategy, starting with the hard compound, as we tried something different and hoped to get lucky with the timing of a potential Safety Carā€¦[we got] to P16 on merit, but that was really the most we could do.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [446]: TP Horner says the team is caught in a ā€œvicious cycleā€ with the RB20ā€™s problems, and desperately need to ā€œturn the situation around.ā€ He says the team is feeling the pressure and that both championships are currently up for grabs. ā€œOn other tracks, running more downforce perhaps hides some of the balance issues that we have.ā€
šŸ„ˆMcLaren [438]: CEO Zak Brown on the teamā€™s 2 #1s: ā€œThey are both young drivers who want to win, we have always believed in having two number ones, thatā€™s always been McLarenā€™s way, it can be difficult to manage ā€“ weā€™ve seen it with Senna and Prost.ā€ I get the philosophy, but if they want to give Lando a shot at the WDC theyā€™ll have to prioritize him. Without team strategy to ensure it - I donā€™t think he catches Max on his own.
šŸ„‰Ferrari [407]: After ā€œemotionalā€ win in Monza, TP Vasseur predicts a ā€œhuge fightā€ for the Constructorsā€™ title. ā€œWe [were] doing the calculation on what we could give up to Piastri each lap, to fix some target to Charles, and just into the last lap we [could say] ā€˜okay, now we are safeā€™, because for the last lap we had something like four seconds, and then we started to think about reliability!ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [292]: Toto Wolff shuts down the ongoing Verstappen courtship rumors saying, ā€œI donā€™t flirt outside.ā€ Go ahead.. read it in his voice. So good, right?
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [74]: Signing of Adrian Newey expected to be announced before next weekendā€™s Azerbaijan GP. Is it finally happening?! Santa Claus Papa Stroll about to just give him his entire bag šŸ’°ļø
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: Yukiā€™s race engineer since his rookie season, Mattia Spini, has been promoted within the team and will be replaced by Ernesto Desiderio.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [28]: TP Komatsu: ā€œIt was great to get one point out of this race, particularly Monza ā€“ this low downforce circuit ā€“ in previous years we havenā€™t been competitive, so itā€™s proved weā€™re working really well as a team to bring a competitive low downforce package.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Alpine [13]: Factory employees in France went on strike to protest Renaultā€™s decision to abandon itā€™s engine program. The strikers have called the teamā€™s plan move to change to Mercedes PUā€™s ā€œa shock and a disaster for automotive innovation, French technological sovereignty, and industrial innovation.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [6]: TP Vowles says Franco Colapinto was put in Loganā€™s seat in part due his ā€œthousands and thousands of kilometers in our simulatorā€ and added ā€œAnd within a simulation environment ā€“ and it is a simulation environment ā€“ heā€™s within a tenth of Alex.ā€
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Reserve driver Theo Pourchaire is being considered for the remaining 2025 seat, with Mattia Binotto believing he has potential.

Tech Talk

  • FIA Makes Wing Statement: While the organization will continue to monitor the situation at different circuit types, the current verdict is ā€œAll front wings are currently in compliance with the 2024 regulations.ā€ Ferrari and Red Bull had raised questions about McLaren & Merc wings, but it looks like theyā€™re safe for now.

  • I See the Light: Visor tear-offs explained. Drivers will have about five chances to remove rain/debris/anything clouding their vision, with finger holes available to remove the protection from either side. Theyā€™re installed with the flaps folded in - so only the next loop is exposed once one is torn off. You may have seen these getting stuck in trailing drivers cars from time to time. Although they are supposed to only be used when necessary, you can picture a more malevolent driver using them like Mario Kart banana peels..

Off the Grid

  • Vegas Prep Underway: While thereā€™s less to do this time around, crews have begun prepping the Sin City Streets for the race 2.5 months. City officials are trying to be less disruptive to residents than last year, mostly working overnight and ensuring roads are open in the morning.

  • F3 Champ: Lenoardo Fornaroli makes an overtake on the final turn of a dramatic race to secure enough points to be crowned F3ā€™s first Italian champion at home in Monza. Thereā€™s been a lack of Italian drivers on the grid compared to F1 historyā€¦ will we see Leo in F1 in a few years?

  • Grounding of the Valkyrie: Fernando Alonso took ownership of this new Aston Martin Valkyrie, only for it to later be spotted on the back of a tow truck after breaking down in Monaco. Easy come, easy go šŸ”½

Quick Question (My Answer)

I think itā€™s option 1 if the team is smart. But Iā€™m rooting for option 2ā€¦ letā€™s see some more papaya power struggles.

Catch ya next weekend for a Baku preview. Now we know who the real tire whisperer isā€¦ šŸ”½
