Brazil GP Recap

Sprint

šŸ„‡ NOR - šŸ„ˆ PIA - šŸ„‰ LEC

DNF: HUL

Papaya rules once again became the story, after Piastri took pole ahead of Norris. There was word that Oscar would be playing the ā€œteam gameā€ going into the race, but like Lando in Hungary he took his sweet time before giving up the lead - sending the message that he could have won the race if he wasnā€™t such a chill dude.

Max was chasing Charles for P3 all race, and was finally able to power through on lap 18 on a weekend where Ferrariā€™s overall pace was disappointing. Checo and Lawson found themselves battling once again, but aside from a close call due to a lock up from the Red Bull they kept it clean.

Hulkenberg had to stop his car just off track due to a failure, which triggered a virtual safety car that many people around the internets felt was conveniently delayed until McLaren had swapped its drivers positions to give Lando the lead. Max got a bit too antsy on the restart on the last lap and earned himself a 5s penalty for VSC infringement, dropping him to P4 and giving Lando a 2pt gain in the Championship fight.

McLaren would have loved for Max to finish lower, but a 1-2 and points gained in the Driverā€™s was the best they could have asked for. Now to carry that momentum into the GP. They carried that momentum into the GP, right? (Insert Anakin meme)

Grand Prix

šŸ„‡ VER - šŸ„ˆ NOR - šŸ„‰ GAS

DSQ: HUL

DNS: STR - ALB

DNF: COL - SAI

Fastest Lap: VER

DoTD: VER

This is going to be a tough one to recap. We canā€™t possibly cover everything, so do yourself a favor and watch the full Quali + GP if you get the chance. One for the ages.

After a confusing aborted start that saw some drivers fined after the race, the timeless tradition of Lando losing pole on the first lap was honored by George Russell who gained an advantage to the inside on turn 1. The drivers benefitting from the crazy qualifying mixed up grid - Yuki, Ocon, Lawson, Gasly - held onto positions early. And because of course he did - Checo got spun out on lap 1. Oof. Thereā€™s no way he keeps this seat next year.. right?

Oh, and donā€™t look now, but Max made up six positions up to P11 on lap 1, running around the outside on a third of the grid in what was foreshadowing to the kind of day he would have. He moved up to P6 by lap 11, finally being slowed down (temporarily) by Charles Leclerc who was the only driver to put up somewhat of a fight. But it was clear the champ just wasnā€™t going to be stopped that day.

Heavy rain picked up and cars were spinning all over, multiple mistakes saw drivers take penalties and really struggle to control their cars. Wet conditions are obviously tough - but the resurfaced track was incredibly bumpy and didnā€™t help the situation. Norris failed to pass the still leading Russell, and both ended up pitting on lap 29 for new inters. With pitters falling behind, we now had an OCO-VER-GAS lineup at the top, one that would be solidified three laps later when a red flag was waved for a big crash from Colapinto. Everyone who didnā€™t pit said thank you very much for the free tire change, and those that stopped earlier were left out to dry. Jk. Ainā€™t nobody was dry last Sunday.

Ocon held off Max for a bit on the safety car restart, but after ANOTHER safety car restart from a Sainz spin, Max made his move into P1 and didnā€™t look back. For the rest of the race he was flying, putting up increasingly improved fastest lap times. He took the checkered flag 18 seconds ahead, in an absolute statement win. A flawless drive in the rain that drew awe from everyone around the sport. One of his best drives ever. Insanely impressive to watch.

McLaren swapped positions for the second time in a weekend, but Landoā€™s P6 combined with a Max win wasnā€™t the result they were looking for. It would take a miracle for the result that while there was hope, weā€™ve all maybe known for some time now wasnā€™t quite in the cards this year. 2025 thoughā€¦ Look out.

The second best story - Alpine double podium. The shining light from the smiles from Esteban and Pierre nearly dried the whole track. Iā€™m pretty sure if they could bottle the friendship vibes between those two after the race it could be used to usher in world peace. What a feel good story after what has been a tough year for Team Frenchie. Someone said it was the happiest podium theyā€™ve ever seen. Usually someone is mad they lost, but not those three. They were all stoked to be there. The cool down room breakdown conversation was the entertaining and informative. You could really feel their excitement.

Absolutely wild that after all that craziness, Max extends his championship lead. That was Landoā€™s shot - pole with Max in P17. He could have halved the lead heading into Vegas. Instead, itā€™s all but over. Gotta say that deflates my hype for the Sin City Spectacle a bit. Max will have the chance to clinch there though as long as Lando doesnā€™t outscore him by three or more points, so that could be cool to see. Even if he doesnā€™t like Vegas the race, how could you not want to clinch a fourth straight title there? It could be a really bad day to be a gin and tonic if he does.

What Else?

  • Alpineā€™s $50M Day: Big prize money implications for the French team that saw them jump from P9 to P6 in the Constructorsā€™ standings. Just 5 pts separate Alpine, Haas, and VCARB. Midfield fight to the finish is on!

  • Hello? Listen to Sainz go unanswered about getting the wrong inters in the weekendā€™s best radio message.

  • Cross threaded wing nut, no more: Sauber completed the fastest pit stop of the race at 2.52 seconds. A long way from the first few races were they couldnā€™t even do 10x that time.

  • Bounce is Back: Hamilton admits bouncing was worse in 2022, but still says last weekend was the ā€œbumpiest ride everā€ and said ā€œI think the car was better in 2022.ā€ Well thatā€™s saying a lot considering he didnā€™t win two races two years ago.

Gabriel Bartoleto Secures 2025 Sauber Seat

While it was Colapinto who got the support from the Brazilian crowd last weekend, they better prepare their pipes for a new hometown hero to hit Interlagos next season. The just-turned-20 year old Brazilian Gabriel Bartoleto will join Nico Hulkenberg at team green highlighter next season as the fourth confirmed rookie on the grid for 2025 (weā€™re still waiting on the last VCARB seat).

The current F2 championship leader is looking to do what Leclerc and Russell did before him - win F3 and F2 ā€˜ships back to back on the first attempt. He is backed by management linked to Fernando Alonso, and was recently released from McLarenā€™s umbrella and allowed to pursue a full time seat. Sauber didnā€™t want a driver loan situation, and looks to continue their history of developing young drivers that eventually went on to win races (Raikkonen, Massa, Kubica, and Perez).

So with that - Both Bottas and Zhou are out of jobs for next season. Looks like Bottas has a good shot at landing the Mercedes reserve role. Itā€™s been a tough season for Zhou as heā€™s consistently at the back of the pack, and word is heā€™s seeking a full time racing seat in another series over an F1 reserve seat.

Makes sense to pair youth with Hulkā€™s experience. Especially when a team has 0 points this year, thereā€™s nothing to lose. Hopefully they can show some kind of promise and pick up some momentum into Audiā€™s take over in 2026. Excited to see another rookie on the grid.

GDPA to FIA: ā€œJust let us ******* swear, ok?ā€

The Grand Prix Driverā€™s Association, the trade union born in 1961 to promote safety standards, drafted a letter to the FIA this week asking them to lighten up on the language policing. The org is currently headed by Geroge Russell, who ironically gives the impression of having the squeakiest clean language on the grid.

Excerpts from the letter read:

"With regards to swearing, there is a difference between swearing intended to insult others and more casual swearing, such as you might use to describe bad weather, or indeed an inanimate object such as a Formula 1 car, or a driving situation. We urge the FIA President to also consider his own tone and language when talking to our member drivers, or indeed about them, whether in a public forum or otherwise. Further, our members are adults, they do not need to be given instructions via the media, about matters as trivial as the wearing of jewelry and underpants.ā€

It also seeks to understand how the fines are being spent, fines that the FIA has said in the past are not appropriate to be levied in the sport.

Maxā€™s fine was one thing, but once they came after poor Charles for his press conference slip up, that crossed the line! The broadcasters need to figure how to use the bleep button common in to US sports slip ups. But either way, clearly the drivers are ticked by the whole thing (remember Maā€™s rogue press conferences from a few weeks ago) so it seems like a wasted effort by the FIA. Just let them say ****!

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [393]: Called his drive ā€œone of his 10 best races.ā€ Hard to believe there could be nine better than that. Time to do some digging and see if heā€™s just being demure. I realize thatā€™s a hot word right now but in searching for something that meant modest + coy, demure was at the top of the list. Very mindful.
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [331]: The pit right before the red flag left him frustrated: ā€œYou take a gamble, itā€™s paid off for them. Itā€™s not talent, itā€™s just luck. So just a bit unlucky.ā€ He later did comment ā€œnice drive mateā€ on Maxā€™s Instagram post.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [307]: Says the team had a lack of pace this weekend, compounded by the rain: ā€œOn one side, we were just not fast enough: the car was extremely difficult to drive and very, very pointy, very digital, very oversteery, and it was very difficult to drive.ā€ Not sure what pointy and digital mean in terms of the car. Maybe he was talking about a mouse cursor and not his car?
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [262]: Received praise from his teammate for playing the team game and giving up the Sprint win: ā€œOscar drove well and he deserved the win today. Iā€™m not proud of winning a sprint race or any race like this, so I thank Oscar and the team.ā€ No more papaya rules here on out.. I predict another win in the last three races for the Aussie.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [244]: Struggled in the conditions last weekend: ā€œI had two crashes that I honestly cannot explain very wellā€¦Itā€™s very unpredictable, this car this year has been extremely difficult to drive in the wet.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell šŸ“ˆ [192]: His gut told him not to pit, which ended up being just a few laps before the red flag. ā€œVery painful all things consideredā€¦It was 'box'. I said 'stay out'. It was 'box' again, it was 'stay out', I said. And they said 'box' again. As I said, 'I want to stay out'. And then the last one, youā€™ve got to go for it. Sometimes you have to trust your gut. Last time I trusted my gut, it went down pretty well.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton šŸ“‰ [190]: On driving Ayrton Sennaā€™s MP4/5B from his title winning 1990 season last weekend: ā€œI won my first championship here, had my best ever drive here, and now to be in this country as an honorary citizen driving my hero's car is almost too much to comprehendā€¦It doesn't feel real it's a massive honor."
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [151]: ā€œNothing really workedā€ as he fought back to P11 after a first lap spin, and a pit stop before the red flag that dropped him back further.
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Was asked if the race was one of the most difficult of his career: ā€œYeah, a little bit for sure, some back pain, a lot of bouncing today.ā€ Said on the radio he was finishing the race for the mechanics despite being in a lot of pain. Respect.
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [31]: Received first black flag (DQ from race) since 2007 for rejoining the race after receiving assistance after his spin and stop.
11. Yuki Tsunoda šŸ“ˆ [28]: Thrilled with his P3 Quali result for the GP: ā€œI had a couple of mistakes but had a bit of luck as well. I think overall as a team, including Liam as well, we did a really good job.ā€ Unfortunately fell victim to bad pit stop timing and finished the race P7 - still a good result.
12. Pierre Gasly šŸ“ˆ [26]: ā€œIn these conditions, everything was possible. We believed it until the end. Two cars on the podium ā€” I donā€™t think anyone would have got that on that bingo card ahead of the season. So itā€™s just fantastic.ā€ We certainly didnā€™t. Well done.
13. Lance Stroll šŸ“‰ [24]: On his formation lap spin: ā€œAs soon as I touched the brake I just had a huge rear lock..so maybe there was a brake failure problem and we have to look into it.ā€ Not sure if that same problem was the reason he drove directly into the gravel afterwards though..
14. Esteban Ocon šŸ“ˆ [23]: Check out this wholesome interview with former friends - turned rivals - turned teammates Esteban and Pierre who were all smiles after their double podium. On flashbacks to their younger days: ā€œWhen we were racing on the wet in go-karts..we were both racing together..today, it tastes a bit like that. A beautiful story from where we come from, and that one will for sure forever stay engraved in my mind.ā€
15. Kevin Magnussen šŸ“‰ [14]: Wonder if he was happy to miss the madness last weekend or if he regrets missing out on the wet opportunity?
16. Alex Albon šŸ“‰ [12]: TP Vowles says his inability to start the GP was ā€œheartbrakingā€ after a promising quali. His crash damage proved to be too much to overcome for the mechanics with quali moved to Sunday morning.
17. Daniel Ricciardo šŸ“‰ [12]: Joined Josh Allen for his first ever Bills home game.
18. Ollie Bearman šŸ“‰ [7]: On a sub-par substitute performance: ā€œToo many mistakes, too many time losses.ā€ It was tough out there for the rookies. Also tough: Hearing Ollie on the radio during the torrential downpour urging for a red flag saying ā€œI donā€™t want to die.ā€ Thatā€™s how bad visibility was for a few laps.
19. Franco Colapinto šŸ“‰ [5]: Latest rumor: Alpine interested in Colapinto?
20. Liam Lawson [4]: Jos Verstappen on the possibility of Lawson becoming his sonā€™s teammate: ā€œI certainly donā€™t oppose thatā€¦Itā€™s better if there is someone who is competitive and pushes Max forward a bit. That always helps, but weā€™ll see.ā€
21. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Saying goodbye: ā€œI will leave the team at the end of the season, but I am fully committed to finishing the season in style. This is not an easy sport for rookies, but the team has allowed me to grow so much over these three years.ā€ By style he means fashion right? Cus I just donā€™t see the points coming. Maybe heā€™ll go full K-Mag and take out Max the next three races to give Lando a shot.
22. Logan Sargeant [0]: Think he would have faired better than Albon and Colapintoā€™s combined three crashes last weekend? I guess weā€™ll never knowā€¦
23. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On his departure: ā€œA situation like this is never easy for anyone but after all the good and in-depth discussions we had in the past weeks, we realized that the conditions to grow this project together were not met.ā€ Hopefully he can land a social media job with Mercedes. He knows the game.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [593]: Talking about their championship strategy: ā€œIn terms of the constructorsā€™, it doesnā€™t change anything and that was always our priority. Even when there was a call to be made to support one driver over the other, it was always secondary to maximizing the constructorsā€™ championship.ā€ Ok, I donā€™t buy this at all. If it were true, why switch Lando and Oscar in the Sprint race?
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [557]: Signed a partnership agreement with IBM targeting fan engagement and data analytics. ā€œThis includes applying IBM's technology and consulting expertise to analyze and transform Ferrari's massive volume and variety of data ā€“ both current and historical ā€“ into custom insights, personalized content, and innovative features designed to supercharge the fan experience.ā€
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [544]: TP Horner on Maxā€™s dynamite performance: ā€œIt was a masterclass from Maxā€¦In difficult conditionsā€¦he shone very brightly. To have the patience, but also the attackingā€¦his first lap was outstanding. I think he passed six cars on the first lap. To win from that far back was beyond our wildest dreams this morning.ā€ As GP said on the radio regarding his first win since Spain: ā€œWorth the wait.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [382]: Dropped a hint on a potential reunion with Bottas in a reserve driver role.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: Shoutout to the mechanics who got Alonso and Stroll ready for the race after both crashed in Quali. Unfortunately the teamā€™s struggles continued in the race, with both drivers having brake issues.
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine šŸ“ˆ [49]: TP Oakes on his drivers: ā€œI'm really proud of Pierre and Esteban. They didn't put a foot wrong. They both soaked up so much pressure and actually they had real pace. It was only Max who got the legs on us, so strong day.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Haas šŸ“‰ [46]: Hulkenberg explaining why he rejoined the race after getting assistance: ā€œThey were partying and pushing me on and saying, 'come on, go, let's go, this race isn't finished'. In that moment, you don't really think, you don't care to be honest as well.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB šŸ“‰ [44]: Will officially be renamed ā€œRacing Bullsā€ for 2025. I thought RB didnā€™t mean Racing Bulls?
9ļøāƒ£ Williams šŸ“‰ [17]: Team had a clear response to the Sainz to Red Bull rumors: ā€œWe can confirm this is not true.ā€ More silliness as the team looks to get Colapinto a seat.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Binotto on the Bartoleto signing: ā€œThe way he is driving impressed me and more than thatā€¦is his capacity to develop, improve and progress through the seasonā€¦that's what counts the most for me.ā€ Gotta be tough to start your career in the tractor the team currently has. But canā€™t pass up that debut F1 seat.

Tech Talk

  • Even Wetter Tires? The latest allegations have Red Bull alleging that some teams purposely injected water into their tires during the Singapore GP to help keep them cool. Pirelli said they have found no clear evidence to support the claims.

  • PACE CHART: Max was quicker than Norris and Russell who each had an extra set of tires. Ocon was faster than Leclerc on one less stop as well. šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Wonderful in the Wet: Other top wet weather performances include Ayrton Senna at the 1985 Portuguese GP, Michael Schumacher in Spain in 1995, and Max Verstappen eight years ago at the same track as his brilliant effort last weekend.

  • Wet Weather Shenanigans: Watch the Sauber pit crew have fun during the flood conditions. Itā€™s like when the MLB guys used to run the bases and slide during rain delays. Is that just a legend? Def saw a commercial like that once. No way theyā€™d risk an injury doing that today.

  • Slip ā€˜N Slide: Fans got in on the wet weather fun with some activities of their own. Looks like a great way to separate your shoulder.

Quick Question (My answer)

5 stars. But I do agree, letā€™s not do that every time. As long as safety remains a priority though, my goodness does the chaos add excitement and true unpredictability. Quali + the GP was one of the wildest days Iā€™ve ever seen in F1.

No race this weekend but weā€™re still back next week. Only three races left in this banger season.

George after pressing send on that FIA letter. šŸ“ø @mmxrie63 on X
