Top 10 On Track Moments

PLP Season 2 Edition 33

A sign of the Summer break: Had my first F1 dream this week. I was preparing to drive in the Monaco GP, but had to hit the bathroom before race start (naturally). Of course by the time I was making my way back, the engines were fired up and the cars will already into the first turns. I tried to hop in the car quick but race control said it wasnā€™t allowed. Boy was my race engineer MAD. I somehow got out after a safety car but still couldnā€™t make up the required laps at which point the dream broke down, as they tend to do.

Next week we wonā€™t have to dream anymore.. and weā€™ll be back with our Zandvoort preview. But until then, letā€™s take a look at the best moments of 2024 (so far) in PLPā€™s version of the beloved ā€œclip showā€ from your favorite 90ā€™s sitcom.

First Half of 2024: Top 10 Dramatic Moments

With a heck of a first half in 2024, it was actually quite easy to come up with the 10 best and most memorable moments from all the on track drama. Putting them in order was another story. This is what I came up with:

  • 10 - Bearmanā€™s Debut in Jeddah: Stepping in for Sainz in the second race, nearly making Q3, and making some overtakes on his way to a P7 finish. Earned his 2025 seat with the performance.

  • 9 - Sainz overtakes struggling Verstappen and wins in Australia: Max stuggles, Sainz makes his move, Maxā€™s brake explodes. Foreshadowing? Without an appendix, no less.

  • 8 - Landoā€™s late charge at Imola: The first of many tight finishes this season that saw the McLaren driver almost hunt down Max out front in the closing laps, nearly giving the Dutchman a taste of his own stroopwafel.

  • 7 - The whole Canada GP: Russell and Verstappen set the tone with a dead even qualifying (more foreshadowing??), followed by a crazy race that was tightly contested in mixed conditions.

  • 6 - Norris letting Piastri through for his first win in Hungary: Was legitimately holding my breath as the situation got tenser and tenser as the laps ticked down.

  • 5 - Norrisā€™ first win in Miami: Finally got over the hump, Max floor damage notwithstanding. Thought for sure heā€™d have another by now though..

  • 4 - Leclercā€™s home win in Monaco: While the race was a bit of a stinker, how could you not love Leclerc finally winning his home GP?

  • 3 - Hamilton chasing Russell at Spa: Another hold-your-breath finish. Thought for sure Hamilton was going to catch George Wasntmyonestopcallbrilliant Russell (it was George, it was), all for a DQ hours later to negate what was a fantastic drive (albeit aided by a slightly lighter car).

  • 2 - Verstappen/Norris collision in Austria: Absolutely bonkers. Jumped out of my seat. It was such a good battle on (and over) the edge up until that point, and to have it all fall apart in such spectacular fashion was incredibly exciting.

  • 1 - Hamiltonā€™s Win in Silverstone: While it was a tough choice, and I still think #2 was the peak dramatic point of the season, how can you not put Hamiltonā€™s first win in two years in the top spot. On home soil no less, in what was a heck of a race overall, and a stellar drive from the seven (eight?) time champion.

If this included off-track news, Hamilton would still be #1 with his move to Ferrari next season. The greats always find a way.

Top 5 Strategy Calls from Bernie Collins

The former head of race strategy for Aston Martin and current F1 commentator offers up her top 5 strategy calls from the first half:

  • 5 - Strollā€™s long first stint in Imola: One of Lanceā€™s best races, where going 10 laps extra in his first medium stint gave him a tire age advantage later on hards, where he managed four overtakes and a P9 finish.

  • 4 - Piastri uses tire advantage in Austria: By extending only 4 laps, a tire advantage in the second stint gave him the edge to overtake Hamilton, while another 4 laps extension during the second round of pits allowed him to overtake Sainz in route to a P2. A few more laps and he may even have caught Russell for the W.

  • 3 - Red Bull nails the wet weather at Silverstone: Max was able to stop slightly earlier as the track got wet, undercutting Piastri and Russell. As the track dried, he switched to slicks ahead of the pack again to take P2 from Norris.

  • 2 - Leclercā€™s 1 stopper in Japan: Allowed him to gain positions on Norris, Piastri, and Alonso to finish P4 after a P8 start. Was running in a podium position too until his teammate Sainz overtook him with much fresher tires.

  • 1 - Russellā€™s 1 stopper in Belgium: Allowed for a P1 finish after a P5 start, though we all know how that endedā€¦ The ability to limit degradation on hards early made the second pit stop not worth it, and a shortened DRS zone meant overtaking was harder. A great call and drive, even though it might have ultimately been part of the reason for the DQ.

Interesting stuff since these kind of things are easy to overlook with so much happening during the race, both on and off screen. The more I watch the more fascinating the different strategies and data crunching becomes.

First Half By The Numbers

Some significant stats from the first 14 races:

0: RUS took pole in Canada after VER set the exact same time

0.647: The closest margin of victory so far, HAM over PIA in Belgium

2.5: Half of the races so far have been won by a smaller margin than two and a half seconds

4: Number of different pole sitters, coming from 4 different teams (VER/RUS/NOR/LEC)

8: All drivers at the top four teams have stood on the podium, with only PER not notching a victory

9: All podium finishers + ALO have recorded a fastest lap

10: All points finishers in Spa had a race win to their name, with the RUS DQ preventing this from becoming 11

13: There are now thirteen race winners on the grid, the most since 1980. The list includes all drivers at the top 4 teams, + ALO/BOT/GAS/OCO/RIC

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [277]: Helmut Marko said Max had hoped their recent Budapest upgrades would give them a two-tenth advantage over McLaren. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for us, that wasnā€™t the case. The field remains tight!
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [199]: After securing his first win but then none to follow in what is probably the quickest car - David Tremayne expects a ā€œcalmer, perhaps more aggressive Lando in the remaining 10 races.ā€ Kinda feels like an oxymoron. But maybe itā€™s a more zen like, but also ruthless approach. Iā€™m sure theirs a Marvel super hero analogy I could make here but Iā€™m not really familiar with who would fit that description. Not The Hulk, for one.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [177]: Looking forward to having Hamilton as a teammate next year for learning purposes, but also ā€œfor me to be able to show what Iā€™m capable of.ā€ Sharl is often on peopleā€™s short list as one of the top drivers in the game.. will be fascinating to see how he stacks up against Lewis in equal (and hopefully FAST) machinery.
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [167]: Revealed on social media that heā€™s been dealing with a broken rib over the past few weeks, battling through the injury during his maiden win in Hungary. He didnā€™t share details on how it happened, but internet sleuths saw the date on the X-ray was July 8th - the Monday after Silverstone.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [162]: With his move to Williams, next year could potentially be a write off as the team looks to turn things around. Vowlesā€™ hopes are pinned to 2026-2027 rather than the next 18 months. With Mercedes expected to produce a top quality engine, they could have a good foundation with the start of the new regulations.
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [150]: Predicts ā€œOne hell of a second halfā€ as the teamā€™s remain close at the top. ā€œItā€™s really fantastic, I think, for the sport, to be having such close teams and driversā€¦The pedigree of drivers at the top today are really elite and amazing.ā€ Upgrades in the third quarter of the season will go a long way to deciding who gets the edge. I do think Merc takes a few more wins though.
7ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [131]: Red Bull technical director Pierre Wache suggests further upgrades will add performance that both he and Max can make use of, which was also part of the idea behind the Hungary update package.
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell [116]: Pumped up for whatā€™s to come this season and into next: ā€œIā€™m so motivated, so excited for the second half of the season, which is ultimately building up towards 2025. And when you look at the competition now, you know, thereā€™s no reason why we canā€™t fight.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [49]: Remaining optimistic despite the teamā€™s recent struggles, says they want to be ā€œchampionsā€ in the next few years. With Papa Stroll opening up the war chest it sure seems like theyā€™re serious. Newey is all but confirmed to have chosen Aston, and they allegedly are pursuing Max aggressively as well.
šŸ”ŸLance Stroll [24]: Former champ Jacques Villeneuve takes a different perspective: ā€œStroll is one of the most deserving drivers to continue racing in F1 because his dad bought the team. Aston Martin could have gone bankrupt if not for Lawrence Strollā€¦ heā€™s [Lance] matching Fernando Alonsoā€™s levelā€¦Now he needs to show heā€™s quick.ā€ Ok idk about matching Alonso, but itā€™s an interesting take in which most people take the opposite side.
11. Nico Hulkenberg [22]: Getting spicy on former Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul: ā€œItā€™s funny that, five years later, heā€™s no longer here. I left too, but I came back and Iā€™m still here. That means something.ā€ šŸ˜¬
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Feels like heā€™s earned a shot at Red Bull, saying ā€œIā€™m a more complete driver.ā€ Heā€™s clearly become aware of his reputation for getting a bit heated, adding ā€œI think the radio communications, emotional control was lacking quite a lot.ā€ Heā€™s had a couple slips this season (like everyone else) but heā€™s definitely shown more composure. We used to be good for an outburst every other race, which I do miss if Iā€™m being honestā€¦
13. Daniel Ricciardo[12]: Has been floated alongside Perez for the remaining Sauber/Audi seat should either of them be jettisoned from the Red Bull zeppelin. Foreshadowing???
14. Ollie Bearman [6]: Eager to learn from Hamilton who will bring a ā€œwinning mentalityā€ to Ferrari.
15. Pierre Gasly [6]: Heā€™s on board with the likely move to Mercedes power units in 2026, making it clear he wants the ā€œfastest packageā€ possible - and acknowledges itā€™s tough for those on the team that had been working on the Renault version to see it come to and end.
16. Kevin Magnussen [5]: Regarding his future, ā€œeverything is on the table.ā€ IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship are two potential options
17. Esteban Ocon [5]: Stresses that communication with the team to fix technical issues will be important at Haas - something he feels was not done properly at Alpine. "Sometimes we haven't been listened to the way we should have been, I would say."
18. Alex Albon [4]: On the outlook for the second half: ā€œWe havenā€™t had many, if any, upgrades this season so far, so weā€™ve been on the back footā€¦If we can get our first proper upgrade on the car when we come back, I think we can fight for points a bit more regularly.ā€
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Feature on why he doesnā€™t see himself in F1 in 10 years, getting more rest this summer break, and his love for creativity and fashion. He also named Silverstone as his favorite circuit - ahead of Shanghai and the Hungaroring.
20. Logan Sargeant [0]: Finishing the 2024 campaign with Williams is still not guaranteed, says Vowles. The TP says he had shown good form in Silverstone and in Budapest, but fell off the pace in Belgium. ā€œItā€™s hard to pinpoint why. Heā€™s just found that the carā€™s been very unpredictable to him from lap to lap, fundamentally.ā€
21. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On his ā€œgreatest raceā€ in Australia kicking off the 2019 season, taking a 20 second victory after a tough 2018.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [408]: Pierre Wache on changing the RB20 concept off the RB19ā€™s dominance: ā€œWe assumed the competition would catch up quickly that's why we wanted to use the advantage to take the concept a step further in order to optimize the aerodynamics. We took some risks here, now it looks it hasn't paid off as we had hoped.ā€ And we all were better off for it. Does anyone find themselves kinda rooting for Max to get a win again? Nah.. def not me..
šŸ„ˆMcLaren [366]: TP Stella on teamā€™s ā€œsurprisingā€ competitiveness given lack of big upgrades so far (besides Miami), saying in the second half there will be ā€œat multiple times some new parts.ā€
šŸ„‰Ferrari [345]: Targeting a new floor for Monza. TP Vasseur says theyā€™re bouncing issue is now under control after identifying a metric that suggests when it becomes prominent.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [266]: Made the most progress since the start of the season, with the W15 gaining 4 tenths in qualifying pace, plus 7 tenths in race pace compared to Red Bull. Yuuugeee. One of the biggest surprises of the season imo, considering where they started.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [73]: TP Krack acknowledges team ā€œexpected moreā€ in 2024, but remains confident theyā€™re on the ā€œright path.ā€ "The updates that we fitted in Hungary are working. It's not just a case of this making the car faster for the rest of this season, it's also having the knowledge that we understand our platform and know how to develop it.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: How theyā€™re trying to pick up Red Bullā€™s baton as F1ā€™s ā€œfun teamā€, so far through Miamiā€™s ā€œcar washā€ and colorful livery and promoting the new Twisters movie at Silverstone. Itā€™s hard to believe now, but in the mid naughties when Red Bull entered F1 they were known for lavish parties, numerous publicity stunts, and really shaking up F1ā€™s culture. šŸŽ‰
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [27]: This yearā€™s success has lead to owner Gene Haas deploying additional resources, with the team currently on a recruiting spree ā€œnever seen beforeā€ in itā€™s history according to TP Komatsu. Theyā€™re looking to grow by 10% from their current size of about 300 people.
8ļøāƒ£ Alpine [11]: With poor development, managerial instability, and even giving up on their own power unit in favor of Mercedes, there are fears Alpineā€™s struggles could continue even into 2026.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [4]: TP Vowles thinks the tightness of the field, not dirty air, is making overtaking more difficult this season: ā€œA field where there isnā€™t tenths between cars, but rather millisecondsā€¦when that happens, overtaking is just a lot more tricky. You need a lot more tire delta in order to make it happen.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Can changes at the top of the team guide them to their first points of the season? Notably, Mattia Binotto joined as COO and CTO after the departure of CEO Andreas Seidl and Audi executive Oliver Hoffman, with Red Bullā€™s Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley set to become the Team Principal of the Audi team.

Tech Talk

  • High Drag: As fast as F1 cars are, they produce incredibly high drag. A Bugatti Veyron has a 60-100km/h (37-62 mph) higher top speed while using the same amount of power. Since power required increases with the cube of speed, the RB19 would need 1000 horsepower to reach 301km/h while the Bugatti would only need 404hp. While speed is necessary in F1, lap time is the focus - using downforce and drag to take corners fast will be beneficial to lap time.

  • Mercedes Unlocking Secrets: A more conventional front wing to add high-speed downforce, a revised floor geometry and edges to help with low-speed understeer, additional techniques to increase load on the front of the floor, and an improved diffuser to increase pulling power have all contributed to their recent success.

  • Red Bull Rumor: Remember the asymmetric braking rule change from last week? There is speculation this was targeted at Red Bull, and investigated when Maxā€™s brake went kaboom in Australia (possibly due to greater hydraulic pressure directed at a given side of the rear axle). This was not technically illegal given the wording of the regulations at the time - but has now been outlawed for the rest of the season. A possible explanation for Red Bullā€™s struggles? Very interestingā€¦

Off the Grid

  • Ready to Rock the Sphere: OneRepublic, Alesso, and Ludacris are set to headline the Sphere Stage during the Las Vegas GP Weekend Nov 21-23. Seen two out of those three. Alesso during my ā€œboom-tsk-boom-tskā€ EDM days and Ludacris who gave a free concert at my college. Not typically my cup of tea but he was pretty ā€œdopeā€ as the kids say.

  • Grill the Grid: Drivers are challenged to name a driver who has had 100 or more starts for every letter from A-Z. The best Grill the Grid performance Iā€™ve ever seen: Watch Sebastian Vettel name every Driverā€™s Champion in F1 history, in order. Yuki could only name two šŸ˜‚

  • Porsche Out: The brandā€™s F1 aspirations are officially a ā€œclosed chapterā€ after it had thought about exploring a potential partnership with Red Bull.

Quick Question (My Answer)

Itā€™s so hard to chooseā€¦ I think the Max/Lando collision in Austria was the most jump out of your seat crazy moment, Iā€™ll remember that one for awhile. So many good finishes this year though.

One more week until racing returns. Gonna make me feel like a kid again šŸ”½

Every newborn gets that same blanket. Who owns that blanket company? Seems like a monopoly to me. šŸ“ø @schumisnoopy on X
