Canadian GP Recap, Yuki Signs, Regulation Hulabaloo

PLP Season 2 Edition 24

Canada delivered one heck of a race eh? Best of the year so far. While multiple drivers looked like they were poised to take the win, Max did what he does and somehow found a way to pull out the victory.

Was really hoping for a Lando win so the subject this week could have been “Our home and native Lando.” That’s what we all missed out on thanks to bad safety car timing. A real shame. The Canadian national anthem is pretty underrated in my opinion. Low key banger, actually. We need a Lance win one of these days to get that on the loudspeakers.

Canada GP Recap

Podium:🥇 VER - 🥈 NOR - 🥉 RUS

Fastest Lap: HAM

DNF: SAR - LEC - PER - ALB - SAI

DoTD: NOR

The best race of the year set the tone early as Haas were the only team to run full wet tires with everyone else starting on intermediates. Their superior grip saw both drivers shoot up the order, with K-Mag making it up to P4 in just a few laps. Unfortunately a bad pit stop erased what turned out to be a great strategy call. George was steady early and maintained the lead in what would eventually be an up and down race for the pole sitter.

Lap 20 saw something that’s been exceedingly rare over the past two years: Max got passed on pure pace as Lando moves into P2. One lap later he capitalized on a Russell mistake and became the race leader. Soon after, a poorly timed safety car and a decision to stay out an extra lap cost Norris the lead as he dropped back to P3. The exact opposite of Miami where the safety car helped him to his first career win - this time it’s not a stretch to saw he was the favorite to win at that point without it.

As the track went from wet to dry-ish to wetter to dry again there were careful strategy calls to be made about when to switch to slick tires. About 2/3 through the race as Lando raced out of the pits he very nearly beat Max to P1, but the champ held on and would maintain the lead for the rest of the race (without shooting off into the distance, as he’s been known to do). Over the course of the last stint, Russell saw himself back into P2, dropping down to P5 after another mistake, only to pass Hamilton with 2 laps remaining to secure the last podium spot.

With wet conditions there were plenty of spins and carbon fiber flying around. Logan spun and triggered the safety car that hurt Lando’s chances. Ferrari’s disastrous weekend saw an awful quali, Leclerc engine issues, and a Sainz spin that took out Albon as well (that’s going to be a bit awkward during contract negotiations), and a rare Yuki mistake that saw him drop from the points.

Wet races are always fun, and this one DELIVERED. Plus Merc is back in the mix now? Just think where we were a few months ago thinking Max was going to once again be watching Netflix on his steering wheel and winning by 40 seconds. NOT SO FAST! (Yes I know… he will still win this year… this is fun though).

More highlights from Canada:

  • The best part of quali besides two identical pole times? George celebrated with his iconic 2023 intro pose 😂

He did the thing! 📸 F1 TV

  • The last time Qualifying saw the same time set at the top was the 1997 European GP at Jerez, where the top THREE drivers put up equal laps - with Jacques Villeneuve (Notable Ricciardo motivator), Michael Schumacher (Notable GOAT), and Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Notable ketchup enthusiast) all set a 1:21.072.

  • Albon with overtake of the year on Ricciardo and Ocon

  • A shoe in for top 10 radio of the year was Darth Toto reminding George to be one with the force. If you consume one piece of F1 media this week, let it be this.

Yuki Back for 2025

Shortly ahead of last weekend’s qualifying, Venmo Cash App Visa Paypal Bulls announced they picked up Yuki’s contract option for next year. The move comes on the heels of a great first third of the season, where he’s been incredibly consistent (save for a mistake in Canada that cost him points).

Team Principal Laurent Mekies had some strong praise of his spicy 24-year old driver, saying “I have been fortunate in my life to witness that [progression] in so many champions. They progress and they get faster, and faster again. What Yuki has done now in his fourth year – you expect these steps to come early in the career, but on his fourth year, to make such a huge leap is credit to him. It’s putting him on a very serious map of the top guys out there.” Oh dang, champions? #1 Yuki hype man right here.

While he was shut out of a Red Bull opportunity with the Perez news last week, he’s had interest from other teams including Sauber/Audi and Haas - which demonstrates how much his stock has risen this year. This would have been unexpected during his numerous meltdowns on the radio last year - he’s made huge leaps in both maturity and performance in a short period of time.

Regulation Consternation

We covered the 2026 regulations release last week, but what has become even more evident since - people are getting their knickers in a twist over some of the potential changes. Some teams are having a bit of a cow over how fast the cars are looking to be on the straights vs potentially very slow in the corners, along with “active aero” - which some think could lead to very quick shifts in balance if a failure occurs with dangerous consequences. Understandable. A valid criticism of the new regs is that the engine specs were made for sustainable marketing purposes without considering what that would mean for the chassis. The FIA has said the “ship has sailed” on 2026 engine tweaks.

Lando also made a good point: Team’s are finally getting a handle on the current ground effect rules, and the racing is really starting to get good. Now we’re going to switch it up? “When you look at how it is now it’s probably as exciting as it’s been in a very long time. I want to just leave it like this for a few years, and I think that’s going to be the best for people watching on TV.” Max added his two cents with ““The longer you keep the regulations the same, the closer it gets between the teams. So 2026 will be probably quite a big reset.”

F1’s whole identity is constant change and rule evolution. But I do agree, closer racing is good for the sport and giving teams more time to refine the current generation of cars leads to a better product. Maybe we have more time between changes? Will be fascinating to see how 2026 plays out and who can nail the new designs first.

Down the Grid

🥇Max Verstappen [194]: Confident that team can improve the RB20 by “quite a big margin” if they figure out the kerb riding problem. “I really think that we can solve this without influencing any other part of the car. We know that this is a weakness and I also know that we are flat out working on it to try and fix it, because I really feel like it's quite a big performance limitation for us at the moment.”
🥈 Charles Leclerc [138]: On double DNF: “This one hurts.” The team’s gamble to go on slick tires early cost them greatly later in the race, though at that points the damage was already done. “We had to test something because, with the engine issues we had, we would have been out the points anyway, and that was it really.”
🥉 Lando Norris [131]: Safety car giveth, and safety car taketh away. This time he was on the wrong end after the team failed to react quickly enough, in what was shaping up to be his second win of the season.
4️⃣ Carlos Sainz [108]: Says a “very weak, very disappointing” weekend was a one-off. Thinks he caught a wet patch after he was trying to take some risks on slick tires in the later stages of the race when his pace was improving.
5️⃣ Sergio Perez [107]: Insult to injury: A three place grid penalty will be assessed next weekend for driving his car back to the pits in an unsafe condition. What’s really spicy about this is Red Bull intentionally told him to break the rules, knowing that him stopping and triggering a safety car would be detrimental to Max who had the lead at the time. Slightly scandalous… not to mention slightly dangerous with the rear wing hanging off.
6️⃣ Oscar Piastri [81]: Was caught by surprised by Mercedes pace last weekend, “I tried my best to stay in front, but I think just on the new tyres they were clearly a lot quicker than everybody.”
7️⃣ George Russell [69]: Was disappointed in P3 after starting on pole, having to fight back from P5 with only a handful of laps remaining. On the radio after the race he told his engineer, “Ugly race on my behalf. Sorry about that.” He did make at least two significant mistakes that cost him track position. But to be fair many drivers did in the tough conditions.
8️⃣ Lewis Hamilton [55]: Said Canada was “One of my worst drives” after losing a podium spot in the late stages, adding “Anyway, the positive is that the car is progressing, it’s moving forwards. I think if I’d qualified the way I should have, I would have been competing for the win, so that’s why it’s quite frustrating.”
9️⃣ Fernando Alonso [41]: “A fantastic race” for the team after a double points finish. He added that with a wet track, “the majority of the race the track was just two meters wide” and “You cannot put a tyre outside of that dry line, so that is very, very stressful. Congratulations to everybody, because it was I think a difficult race.” If I ever win an Oscar - “Congrats and thank you to everybody.” Cue music.
🔟 Yuki Tsunoda [19]: On late mistake that cost him points in what had been a solid drive, “It was my fault”.
11. Lance Stroll [17]: “Really happy” with P7 in his best home race result of his career. “We knew that coming into the weekend that this would be a good track for us, but it’s good that we capitalized on it.”
12. Daniel Ricciardo 📈 [9]: Put in a great quali starting P5 and solid drive to finish P8 after Jacques Villeneuve questioned why he was “still in F1” earlier in the weekend. Ricciardo’s response of “Eat ****” was backed up by a great performance. Some internet people joked that RB just needs Jacques to smack talk Danny every weekend for extra motivation.
13. Oliver Bearman 📉 [6]: Rumors are floating that he’s already signed with Haas… but no confirmation yet.
14. Nico Hulkenberg 📉 [6]: On his near miss while dodging Yuki’s spin, “I was bracing for impact.A great display of reflexes because boy howdy was that close.
15. Pierre Gasly 📈 [3]: Doesn’t want the team squabble with Ocon to be a story, and was happy with a season high P9 and the first double points for the team: “[We] had to make some pretty risky calls with the hard tire, which I saw from the position we were in, if I wanted to recover, I had to take some risks.I felt good, we were competitive…managed to overtake quite a lot of cars.”
16. Alex Albon 📉 [2]: Was having a solid race until he was taken out by Sainz’s spin. “I was kind of expecting him to stop, but the way he kind of rolled around… I thought 'okay that’s fine I’ve got a position,' and then as I saw him coming and rolling around me, I thought 'okay he’s going to clip my rear right' and I was a bit of a passenger. Frustrating as for sure points were available today.” Sainz apologized to Albon and Williams… trying not to upset the future team???
17. Esteban Ocon 📉 [2]: Was very frustrated with team orders to let Gasly through, calling it a “very sad” situation when the team said he couldn’t have his place back. “I got the instructions to let Pierre past one and a half lap or two laps to go, to catch Daniel who was two and a half seconds in front and too fast for us, so the call made no sense. But I’ve done my part of the job, which is being a team player.”
18. Kevin Magnussen 📉 [1]: On the team’s bold wet tire call: "We took the right choice on the full wets - but then I think we pitted off onto the inter too early because we ended up having to take another inter. We could have stretched that full wet, to then go on to the inter and stay on it instead.”
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: “Another tough race, obviously [the pre-race changes] didn’t really solve the issue. There was quite a bit going on but for me it was a bit [of a] lonely race, especially during the second stint, [I was] just kind of driving alone.” Proposal to allow Zhou to take his cat in the cockpit with him so he isn’t so lonely. 😿
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: As points drought continues, says the team needs “bigger upgrades, and more of them.” Can’t argue with that logic. Make the car better!
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: Struggled on the wet track: “It was tricky [conditions], obviously not the way I wanted it to go, just not good enough, too many mistakes. Two very punishing ones. For sure, very disappointed with myself after feeling like I was driving great this weekend so move on and just look ahead.”

Constructor’s Corner

🥇Red Bull [301]: After close battles in Imola and Montreal, and being behind the pace in Monaco, James Allison of Mercedes said they’re upgrade actually looked like a downgrade. TP Horner responded with "even with our downgrade, we managed to beat their upgrade.” So you admit it’s a downgrade? 😬
🥈Ferrari [252]: TP Vasseur hopes the team got “all the ***** parts of the season” out of the way in Canada. Double Q3 knockout, Leclerc engine issues, Sainz spin, double DNF. About as rough as it can get. He added ““I’m not scared of this kind of weekend. It’s like it is, and it’s racing.” Get back on that Prancing Horse.
🥉McLaren [212]: Teases Spanish GP upgrades as the team has yet to be able to win a race on raw pace alone. TP Stella: "This is more some individual components where we found a little bit of performance and rather than waiting to deploy everything together once ready we take it track side.”
4️⃣ Mercedes [124]: Toto says the team had a “short dream” of victory after George’s decent start in the race, but is still happy with the podium as the team “mustn’t be too greedy.” He added: “We need to take the positives. The car has made a real step forward with bringing bits and the development direction is true.” Didn’t expect to see Merc in the mix this fast… do we see a FOUR way fight at the top consistently??? Maybe not every race, but if they continue to develop expect some races where they have a shot.
5️⃣ Aston Martin [58]: “Premature” to think all balance issues have been solved with the car. TP Krack: "There are different and difficult circuits coming up, so we need to sit down and see what is the best possible package for the races to come, because they will be very intense."
6️⃣ RB [28]: TP Mekies on Yuki staying with the team for 2025: “It is well-deserved and it is also very good for him and us to know so early in the season that this matter is not something we have to think about anymore.”
7️⃣ Haas [7]: Bearman, Ocon, and Zhou are said to be the top 3 for the 2 seats. Zhou brings a lot of potential sponsorship money, but I’d bet it’s an Ocon-Bearman lineup next year. Hereby dubbed “ConMan”. Or maybe “BearCon”. Both are dangerous.
8️⃣ Alpine 📈 [5]: Ocon revealed that the team has alternated which team has a weight disadvantage each race until they can deliver their weight reduction upgrade to both cars.
9️⃣ Williams 📉 [2]: Rumor is that they have offered Sainz a four year contract with an option to leave after two years if the proposed plans around Vowles, the team, and sponsors don’t become a reality.
🔟 Kick Sauber [0]: Appoints Stefano Sordo to Performance Director role ahead of Audi takeover.

Tech Talk

  • After a their best race of the season in Montreal in part due to a new front wing that improved balance, Mercedes is preparing a new floor for Barcelona next weekend.

  • Ferrari’s second upgrade package originally scheduled for Silverstone has been moved up to Barcelona. They’ll being a new floor intended to increase over load on the car, designed to help with tire performance.

Off the Grid

  • Need to scratch the racing itch with now F1 this weekend? 24 hours of Le Mans has got you covered.

  • Mary McGee was interviewed on during the pit walk last weekend. She started racing cars in 1957 and was the first woman to race motorcycles and complete the Baja 1000 and 500 solo. Heck yea.

  • Apparently a lot of drivers like to warm up by juggling with a soccer ball. You used to see this in the NHL a lot too, not sure if it’s still a thing. I like to warm up for early races by rolling out of bed at the last possible moment and chugging coffee. Which is also pretty athletic.

  • Watch Daniel Ricciardo break down all the components of his steering wheel. There is just so many things to think about. Here I was thinking gas, break, turn… easy.
