Qatar Recap + 2024 Season Finale

PLP Season 2 Edition 50

Race Weekend - 2024 Season Finale

And just like that, only one race remaining it what was a doozy of an F1 season. Thereā€™s still a lot to race for - and something tells me this electric season still has one last thrill left in the tank.

Hereā€™s the schedule for the 2024 finale in EST:

  • FP1: Friday, December 6th @ 4:30am

  • FP2: Friday, December 6th @ 8:00am

  • FP3: Saturday, December 7th @ 5:30am

  • Quali: Saturday, December 7th @ 9:00am

  • Grand Prix: Sunday, December 8th @ 8:00am

Quick Question!

McLaren holds a 21 point lead in the Constructors' Championship - Can Ferrari snatch it from them in the season's last race on Sunday?

Qatar Recap

Sprint

šŸ„‡ PIA - šŸ„ˆ NOR - šŸ„‰ RUS

DNF: None

The final sprint of the season saw pole sitter Norris get a good jump off the line, with his teammate quickly overtaking Russell for P2. Papaya had the pace last Saturday and while Russell had some looks (and complained twice about late moves from the Aussie), the only team that could disrupt their 1-2 finish were themselves (sort of). In a move that had been planned since Brazil and against the teamā€™s wishes, Lando slowed down after the last turn to allow Piastri to take the win. Surprising, but made sense considering Piastri had to give up a Sprint win a few weeks ago for Lando who was still in the WDC fight. Fair play, Lando. It was quite a risky move with Russell right behind - the top 3 finished within just .4s of each other.

In a bizarre pit lane start, Colapinto surged past Checo after he reacted to the green light incredibly slowly, adding to his recent woes. The best Max could manage was a measly single point in P8, but his fortunes would turn greatly in the GP after the team were able to tweak the set up favorably. Future teammates Leclerc and Hamilton had a brilliant clean battle lap 13 which produced the best racing action.. perhaps a preview of 2025? Hulkenberg picked up a P7 for Haas, with Gasly and K-Mag just missing out on points. Lawson went way backwards at the start, while Zhou took a gamble on soft tires that did not pay off.

Grand Prix

šŸ„‡ VER - šŸ„ˆ LEC - šŸ„‰ PIA

DNF: OCO - COL - STR - PER - HUL

Fastest Lap: NOR

DoTD: ZHO

We made up for our midseason lack of safety cars last weekend with three deployments in a chaotic race that also saw seven driver penalties and five DNFs. It was one of those where you look at the running order and are constantly like ā€œwait, how they heck did [insert driver here] end up in that position?ā€ Nothing to scrambles the brain quite like safety car stops with half the grid pitting.

If there was ever a guaranteed loss of pole on turn 1, this was it. Max pointed right at George and promptly overtook him, driven by the Mercedes driversā€™ advocation that Max be penalized for a prep lap quali incident - which Max was NOT happy about (read more below). Lando also got the jump at the start and moved into P2. Colapinto and Ocon were out from a Hulkenberg bump on turn 1, with Stroll spinning Albon a few turns later to bring out an early safety car.

Some good passes by K-Mag (who dropped a celebratory **** off! on the radio after passing Albon), Gasly, and Alonso would be outdone by the mid-race star of the show: Albonā€™s mirror. It simply said ā€œpeace outā€ and flew off the car, landing on the main straight. Crofty couldnā€™t believe there wasnā€™t a safety car to clear it immediately, and with good reason because a couple laps later it got blasted by Bottas. The resulting debris hindered both Sainz and Hamiltonā€™s races with punctures, which then triggered another safety car. Max somehow caught Lando not lifting (slowing down) during a yellow flag when he was behind him, resulting in the penalty that saw him drop from P2 to finish P10.

Leclerc and Piastri escaped the bedlam and rounded out the podium behind Max. Zhou finally got Sauber on the board, benefitting from some safety cars but putting in a great drive in his own right to take P8. Mercedes went backwards as their car continues to be an enigma, while Gasly earned his second top five finish in the last three races and Alonso finally had a decent day finishing P7.

Abu Dhabi GP Preview

Looks like a big chefā€™s knife

The annual race finale heads to Yas Marina (said Yaaaaaas Marinaaaa, as if youā€™re encouraging your friend Marina) in Abu Dhabi. The track has a big ā€˜ol straight between turns 5 and 6, which feature heavy braking zone ripe for overtaking opportunities - along with the exit towards turn 9. Turns 10 thru 12 is a tricky section that requires braking with decent lateral load on the car, with placement being critical going into turn 13. Lap times are made or broken in the third sector.

Will we get driver donuts this year? I think Max did some last year? I think Lewis 100% to celebrate his last race with Mercedes. Hopefully he goes out on a high note with a good result. But who could forget poor Charles in 2023 getting denied after the team missed on on P2 in the Constructorsā€™. If they manage to pull off P1 in the Constructorsā€™ this year though.. Iā€™m willing to be heā€™ll get to do car spinnies. The last race of the year is always a nice feel as the driver conclude the grueling schedule.. and thereā€™s still plenty of intrigue in this yearā€™s edition.

What to watch for:

  • Prancing Horse vs Papaya People: Ferrari needs to pick up 22 points on McLaren, or 21 plus a race win to have the edge on season victories. A 1-2 LEC/SAI finish ahead of a 4-5 NOR/PIA would do exactly that. Theyā€™ve only bested them by 21 points in a race once this year - their 1-2 finish in Austin.

  • Battle for P2: Leclerc is only 8 points off of Norris for P2 in the WDC. Heā€™ll need to best him by 9 points, or 8 points if he gets the win. So, he can guarantee P2 with a race win + fastest lap.

  • Can Haas pull it off? Gaslyā€™s recent success might have put P6 out of reach for the American team. Theyā€™ll need to outscore team Frenchie by six points to earn their best finish since 2018.

  • Last Hurrahs: Unlike last year, weā€™ve got a handful of F1 drivers who wonā€™t be on the grid next year. Letā€™s see if K-Mag, Zhou, Bottas, (and most likely Checo) can end their F1 careers on a high note. Itā€™s also increasingly likely Colapinto wonā€™t have a seat for next year after interest has waned during his recent string of tough races.

  • Rookies Galore: Weā€™ll have six rookies driving in FP1, including Arthur Leclerc driving Sainzā€™s car. Charles and Arthur will become the sibling teammates in F1 history for an hour.

Ocon Out, Checo Likely Out, Max and George on the Outs

And we thought silly season was finally over for 2024. Nope. Add these to the list of why 2024 has been crazy both on and off track:

  • Esteban Ocon has driven in his last race for Alpine, and will be replaced by Jack Doohan this weekend. Based on his social posts, the move caught him by surprise and he was disappointed his five year tenure with the team ended that way. He even had a special helmet planned to honor the team.

    • Part of his Instagram post reads: ā€œAs you know, the plan was always to race one last time this weekend and personally say goodbye to you all next weekā€¦This is not how I wanted things to end.ā€

    • Cold move by Alpine here. They said the release was so he could test for Haas, but Sainz is testing for Williams so whatā€™s the difference? Seems like they might want to give Doohan a chance to show he deserves the seat over Colapinto? Or did team drama become too much?

  • Sergio Perez seems to be all but out at Red Bull after this weekend, with many outlets reporting what has seemed inevitable for quite some time. Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have both already alluded to it, and his performance has not improved down the stretch.

    •  At 34 years old and no seats left for 2025.. will this race be his last? He may have an opportunity if GM/Cadillac wants to bring in a vet, or even if a 12th team is approved.

    • Liam Lawson is the reported frontrunner for the seat alongside Max, while Colapinto interest has wanted and Yuki continues to get overlooked. Maybe an impressive end of season test could sway team opinion? Doubtful.

  • Big Beef Brewing ever since George Russell advocated to for Max Verstappen to get a penalty for impeding during a cool down lap in quali last weekend. After Max allegedly approached George at the drivers parade, theyā€™ve since been duking it out in the media:

    • Max earlier in the week: ā€œā€œI think I have a lot of respect for a lot drivers, but after last night I totally lost it for himā€¦I thought it was absurd how Russell tried to give me a penaltyā€¦In front of the camera he is very reasonable, but outside he is a completely different person. I can't stand that, then you better **** off.ā€

    • George Retorted: ā€œMax has gone personal. Heā€™s crossed the line and Iā€™m not going to stand for it from someone who thinks heā€™s above the lawā€¦ He said he would put me on my ******* head. Somebody has to stand up to a guy like this before it gets out of control.ā€

    • Max shot back: "George is a backstabberā€¦He's just a loser. He lies and pastes all kinds of things together that aren't trueā€¦I only gave my opinion about his behavior with the stewards. He's clearly not into that.

      • When told that Russell has tears in his eyes at one point, Verstappen cannot suppress a smile. "It wasn't that dramatic at the stewards last week. Maybe next time it will be, then I'll bring tissues."

Oh my goodness. Watch out if theyā€™re lined up close on the grid for Abu Dhabi. Already looking forward to these two on track next year, especially if they both have competitive cars.

Down the Grid

šŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøMax Verstappen [429]: Another : ā€œItā€™s not true [that I said Iā€™d drive him into a wall]. Heā€™s trying to exaggerate it again. Do you know what else I can't stand? He attacks me in an unacceptable way with the stewards and then comes back a day later as if nothing is wrong and slaps me on the shoulder.ā€ This is big time beef. Maybe it will cool off between seasons? I kinda hope not?
šŸ„ˆ Lando Norris [349]: Felt he let the team down when he failed to lift for a yellow flag that resulted in a penalty. ā€œI donā€™t know if Iā€™ve missed it or just been dumb. But, yeah, the rule is if you donā€™t slow down under a yellow thatā€™s the penalty, so itā€™s a fair penalty.ā€
šŸ„‰ Charles Leclerc [341]: ā€œReally happyā€ with P2 in a chaotic race. On this weekend: ā€œI think we are all very close so I think itā€™s going to be very tight, but itā€™s exciting. 21 points is still a lot but everything is possible and weā€™ll give it our all.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [291]: ā€œPainfulā€ safety car timing and not ā€œquite having the paceā€ still led to a podium as he couldnā€™t get overtakes done on Russell and Leclerc at different points in the race. Is ready for the Constructorsā€™ battle to ā€œgo down to the wire.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [272]: Puncture and safety car timing didnā€™t help his race, but still managed a P6 after qualifying P7. ā€œWe lost a few points there for the championship that might be important at the end of the year, but at the same time we can at least bring the fight to Abu Dhabi.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell [235]: ā€œI mean this sport is just so funny how it swings so quicklyā€¦Friday was a great day. Saturday, pace in the Sprint [was] arguably equal quickest. Qualified second, and then todayā€¦ bad start, pace was nowhere.ā€ F1 Gods giveth, and F1 Gods taketh away.
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [211]: Looking to give Mercedes a farewell ā€œbest shotā€ in his last race with the team this weekend. ā€œIā€™m still standing, itā€™s not how you fall, itā€™s how you get back up.ā€ Classic inspirational Lewis quote. Hope he goes out on a high note.
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [152]: A slow start that saw him get overtaken at pit exit plus a burned clutch that caused a careless safety car spin has appeared to seal his fate.
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [68]: Says the car is struggling with energy deployment, and isnā€™t happy with the lack of top speed - but was happy to come away with points: ā€œObviously we capitalized on some DNFs and penalties, so we were ready and there to take it.ā€
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg [37]: Rues a ā€œmessyā€ DNF in Qatar: ā€œLost it in a big way in a high-speed corner very aggressively and suddenly, so not our day for sure. One of those to forget and we just have to wipe it off.ā€
11. Pierre Gasly šŸ“ˆ [36]: On seeing the top teams on track during his impressive recent form: ā€œAt the start of the year the only time I got to seem them is when they put the blue flags on us.ā€ Blue flags signal to let a faster car through, and mean you are getting lapped. Quite the turntables vs the start of the season.
12. Yuki Tsunoda šŸ“‰ [30]: Once again with the quote of the weekend: ā€œMy engineers said: ā€˜Thereā€™s a beaver.ā€™ But why is there a beaver in the Middle East? Like how is it possible? Maybe thereā€™s a surprise with global warming.ā€ The engineer was actually trying to explain the mirror on the track. šŸ˜†
13. Lance Stroll [24]: On opening lap contact with Albon that ultimately led to a DNF: ā€œI was just trying to hold my line on the inside of the corner, but I just started picking up huge levels of understeer and washed out and made contactā€¦completely unintentional.ā€
14. Esteban Ocon [23]: Wished Jack Doohan luck, saying: ā€œI would also like to wish nothing but great things to my friend Jack as he takes this next big step in his career at the Abu Dhabi GP.ā€ At least he has a seat for next season, so weā€™ll see how he gets his revenge on his old squad.
15. Kevin Magnussen [16]: Will drive for BMW in the WEC next year. Love to see it. Also, had a great post with a picture of a bowling ball captioned ā€œUsing my last race to get Hulk a podium.ā€ Everyone else better make sure their mirrors are attached on Sunday.
16. Alex Albon [12]: ā€œWe were kind of in no manā€™s land that whole race, kind of at the back, just struggling with pace to be honest with you.ā€ When being asked about his mirror that flew off and caused quite the kerfuffle he quipped that he didnā€™t really need it anyway.
17. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: Whoā€™s that guy chugging a beer on the big screen at an LA Kings game?
18. Ollie Bearman [7]: Yuki next year when his engineer says Bearman is behind him: ā€œThereā€™s a Bear on track?? How is that possible?ā€
19. Franco Colapinto [5]: Another weekend, another crash for the super-sub. This one wasnā€™t his fault: ā€œYou take all that risk for nothing, the guys on the inside were a bit stupid.ā€
20. Zhou Guanyu šŸ“ˆ [4]: Thrilled with P8 and DoTD honors. Noted how itā€™s been a difficult season for him and the team but says they ā€œGot what they deserved.ā€ The car is finally serviceable - good to see Zhou get on the board in his likely penultimate F1 race.
21. Liam Lawson šŸ“‰ [4]: Apologizes for Bottas collision: ā€œIt wasnā€™t my intentionā€¦I thought I had more grip than I did.ā€
22. Valtteri Bottas šŸ“ˆ [0]: ā€œI am really excited for the future, I think we [Zhou] have had a really good professional relationship. Naturally I want to finish ahead of him and he wants to finish ahead of me but I have made a friend for a lifetime.ā€ āœØ No longer in last place due to a P11 finish + Doohan debut. Woohoo!
23. Logan Sargeant šŸ“‰ [0]: Will join the European Le Mans series in 2025.
24. Jack Doohan [0]: Looking to build confidence in 2024ā€™s final race before his official debut in 2025. A 24th driver added to the grid for the 24th race of the year. Weā€™ll be back to the normal 20 to kick off 2025.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡ McLaren [640]: TP Stella on Landoā€™s 10s stop and go penalty that saw him drop from fighting for the win to fighting for points: ā€œI think in the application of the penalty, I think we have lost any sense of proportion and any sense of specificity.ā€
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [619]: TP Vasseur says the team will ā€œfight until the last corner of the last lapā€ in the battle for the Constructorsā€™. He thinks Abu Dhabi should be better on paper than Qatar.
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [581]: Christian Horner is being cryptic on Checo, saying the driver is ā€œwise enough to come to his own conclusions over Red Bull future.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [446]: Toto Wolff says ā€œnot such a good day in the officeā€ as George goes backwards from pole and Lewis has a race to forget. ā€œWe lost all the balance in the car from yesterday to today, horrific understeer with both of them and simply the pace was gone which was weird to understand.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [92]: The Race: How the team went from podiums to slowest in only a year. A.K.A. the ā€œReverse McLarenā€.
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine šŸ“ˆ [59]: According to TP Oakes, releasing Ocon was best for both parties to move on, and Jack to get in early. Then do it earlier in the year? Idk. Itā€™s just not a great look.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas šŸ“‰ [54]: Team was unaware of Alpineā€™s plans to release their 2025 driver ahead of this weekend.
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB [46]: Isack Hadjar looks to be the front runner for a 2025 seat, with either Lawson or Tsunoda replacing Checo at Red Bull. He currently trails Bortoleto by 0.5 points in the F2 championship going into their last race weekend as well in Abu Dhabi.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: Flew extra crew to Abu Dhabi to help with car repairs.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [4]: Points baby! SF1TKS is on the board! A nice feel good end to the season for them.

Tech Talk

  • SF-25 Direction: Word is Ferrariā€™s 2025 car will be quite different from this yearā€™s design, with a new front suspension, a new chassis, and adjusted cockpit, and different engine position. Their updated floor was deemed a success - theyā€™ll run it in Abu Dhabi as well.

  • Alpineā€™s Improvement: A shorter nose and redesigned front wing helped propel Pierre Gasly to a P5 finish in Qatar. The new design has improved front wing load, and the new gap feeds air to the underfloor with a concave nose shape inducing a lower pressure area. šŸ”½

Even without knowing squat about aerodynamicsā€¦ it just looks like it looks like it works better, right? šŸ“·ļø Giorgio Piola

Off the Grid

  • P1 for Pulling? Abbi Pulling won F1 Academyā€™s 2024 campaign, earning a podium in every race and winning seven out of eleven. That is until a third race was announced for this weekend after only one happened in Qatar (thereā€™s typically two per site). So technically a perfect weekend from her closest challenger Doriane Pin could dethrone Abbi after sheā€™d already been announced the winner. Unlikely, but a bit of an odd move. Iā€™ll wager she remains P1 after Abu Dhabi.

  • Orange Army Gets One More: Zandvoort announced a one-year extension on their race contract, taking it through the 2026 season. But F1 and the promoter have said they will not remain on the calendar after their contract expires. So only two more races left to drive through the orange flair fog in front of the Verstappen crazies.

Quick Question (My answer)

My head says McLaren, but my heart says Ferrari. Which one is to be trusted?

Weā€™ll be back next week to wrap up 2024. As is tradition, the drivers enjoyed their EOY dinner. Some clever fellow broke down the seating arrangements. I wonder where K-Mag and the Aston guys were?
