2024 Takes the Checkered Flag

PLP Season 2 Edition 51

93 Days until Christmas Australia

Maybe Iā€™m still high off the feel good emotion of last weekend (or maybe Iā€™ve already consumed far too many Christmas cookies) but Iā€™m already going through F1 withdrawal.

Itā€™s going to be a long winter, but I think it will be worth the wait. 2025 is shaping up to be another doozy - Lewis at Ferrari, four teams battling at the top, a legitimate shot at a non-Max WDC, new rivalries (Max/George?), likely seat changes at Red Bull, five new full time drivers to mix things up.. and plenty more we canā€™t even predict.

With that, Iā€™ll be taking a bit of a winter break myself. Weā€™ll still have some off season updates, look for the next edition around the second or third week of January where Iā€™m sure theyā€™ll be plenty of news to get caught up on. Iā€™m going to take the next few weeks to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas by accumulating credit card debt and engaging in gluttonous revelry until Iā€™m completely overflowing with holiday spirit.

In the meantime - I encourage everyone to participate in ā€œWhamageddonā€. To win, all you have to do is avoid hearing ā€œLast Christmasā€ by Wham! in the 24 days leading up until Christmas. Unfortunately Iā€™ve already lost four times.

McLaren Wins First WCC Since 1998

The Papaya People have done what was unthinkable less than two short years ago - where they started 2023 with the slowest car - and won the 2024 World Constructorsā€™ Championship, their first in 26 years. Last time they were crowned the top team in Formula 1 - both of their current drivers werenā€™t even born. Itā€™s also the first time ever the WCC has been won without a single DNF (Lando technically got a +7 lap designation after his collision with Max in Austria). Oscar completed every lap this season, joining Max in 2023, Lewis in 2019, and Schumacher in 2022 as the only times itā€™s been done. He avoided being lapped after his Abu Dhabi troubles by just six seconds!

The new wind tunnel that went live a year and a half ago plus the calm leadership style of Andrea Stella who blended departments and brought calculated direction to the team were certainly big contributors to the turnaround. And the enthusiasm of Zak Brown right? Right?? While the other top teams all had missteps in technical direction, McLaren never did. They steadily improved and were the fastest car in a given weekend more often than not through the mid and second half of the season. Even with some strategic errors on track this year, they delivered when it counted and held off the charging Ferrari to seal the deal in the last race of the season.

After the clinching race last weekend, CEO Zak Brown praised Landoā€™s calm under pressure after Oscar got spun out early: ā€œThat was the worst two hours of my life, by far,ā€ Brown joked. ā€œI mean, Lando drove brilliantly, unfortunate what happened to Oscar at the start, but the team was flawless. They executed the pit stop great and I think I was the only one who was ready to have a heart attack for two hours.ā€

The ability to go from worst car to WCC in such a short amount of time speak volumes to the teams collective direction, technical development, and hard work. Having two top drivers sure doesnā€™t hurt either. Theyā€™ll be right back in the mix heading into next year, and are likely the favorites to repeat.

Abu Dhabi Recap

šŸ„‡ NOR - šŸ„ˆ SAI - šŸ„‰ LEC

DNF: PER - COL - BOT - LAW

Fastest Lap: MAG

DoTD: LEC

The Constructorsā€™ looked like it was locked up after a 1-2 McLaren quali, but Max had his own ideas about that. He shot for a gap on the inside of Piastri on turn 1, making contact and sending them both spinning and sliding down the order. Bottas and Perez came together as well, foreshadowing a tough day for both drivers. Meanwhile, Leclerc made up 11 places after a poor quali + a grid penalty to find himself in P8 after a monster lap 1. The title fight was suddenly interesting again.

While not in the title mix, Lewis Hamilton put in his own stellar drive overcoming a P16 start to battle all the way back up the field and finish P4. He even managed a dramatic overtake on his teammate on the last lap to end his legendary run with Mercedes on a high note.

Ferrari put in a mighty effort to secure a double podium (nice for Carlos to end his Ferrari career on a high), but it wasnā€™t enough to catch Lando, who drove a perfect race out front to bring home the Championship for McLaren. After the messy turn 1 it was all on his shoulders to bring it home, and he stepped up. Letā€™s see if he can take that confidence into next season to give Max (and others?) a real challenge for the WDC.

Magnussen was the victim of a Bottas lock up, and while he was the last classified finisher he was able to take the fastest lap in his final F1 race. Though finishing P15, Jack Doohan put in a solid mistake free effort in his debut. Max and Oscar managed a P6 and P10 respectively after their early contact - for which Max apologized to Oscar for after the race. Fancy that? Gasly ends the season on a high for Alpine with a P7 finish, which no one saw coming nine months ago. Alonso managed P9 and is undoubtedly looking to move onto next season after the teamā€™s backwards slide.

Thatā€™s a wrap on one heck of an F1 season. Seven multiple race winners where no driver won three in a row. Tight battles in the WDC and WCC. So many exciting races. Weā€™ll take a look back in a few weeks, then gear up for a highly anticipated 2025 campaign.

Down the Grid

šŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøšŸ†ļøMax Verstappen [437]: Announced last week that heā€™s got a baby on the way with partner Kelly Piquet. Had a wholesome quote when asked about becoming a dad, saying heā€™s already a ā€œbonus dadā€ to his step daughter. In classic Max fashion, when asked about his 8 penalty points on his license going into 2025 he responded: "Maybe I'll make sure I get to 12 points when the baby is born. Then I can go on paternity leave."
šŸ„ˆ Lando Norris [374]: Drove a flawless race to bring home the title: ā€œIt feels incredible, not just for myself but for the whole teamā€¦Iā€™m so proud of everyone ā€“ itā€™s been a lovely journeyā€¦For us to win a constructorsā€™ after 26 years is pretty special.ā€ Added that he learned a lot battling Max this year and has eyes on the WDC next year.
šŸ„‰ Charles Leclerc [356]: On just missing out on the WCC: ā€œI knew that on Lap 1 I had to take all the risk possible to gain as many places as possibleā€¦ This was achieved but unfortunately we were just starting too far back to do anything better than what weā€™ve done today. I think weā€™ve done the maximum.ā€ Was going to be tough after getting the penalty for taking a new battery.. even though Max did his best to help them out.
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [292]: Had a tough outing but was happy with taking the ā€˜ship: ā€œIt was a pretty miserable race for myselfā€¦the biggest thing today is we clinched the championship and itā€™s a massive credit to everyone at McLarenā€¦couldnā€™t be prouder of them allā€¦Very, very happy with the yearā€™s work and obviously today was tough, but nice to seal the deal.ā€ Classic understated Oscar.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [290]: Delivered a strong result in an emotional last race with the team. Heā€™s already on to testing with Williams, going fastest in the first morning testing session this week. ā€œā€œIf I have the right car and my target is from next year onwards, focus together with Williams to get back to where we belong together.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ George Russell [245]: Paid tribute to last race with LH with a special helmet. Said that Lewis deserved to beat him last weekend. ā€œHe has not only been an incredible team mate, but someone that I looked up to when I was karting and racing in junior formula. He is not only the greatest driver of all time but is the type of person that every racing driver should aspire to be.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [223]: The end of an era: ā€œIt's been the greatest honor of my life, so I think when I knelt next to [the car] it was just about giving thanks, firstly thanking my own spirit for continuing to push, and thanking everyone that powered and built that car. I'm proud of everyone."
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [152]: Says his DNF ā€œsums it upā€ after a rough 2024 campaign, which saw no top 5 finishes since Miami. On his future: ā€œI think we know how difficult this year has been so I think itā€™s just a matter of discussing whatā€™s best for everyone going forwards. Weā€™ll see what happens.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [70]: Looking ahead to 2025 after a tough 2024 season: ā€œI think we had some difficulties this year, more than last year, and the team [were] responding well to those adversities and to those challenges.ā€
šŸ”ŸPierre Gasly šŸ“ˆ [42]: Hit his goal this weekend of P6 in Constructors and P10 in the drivers. ā€œIā€™m so happy, it was a very long season.ā€ Low key great season for Gasly after the team had a horrid start. He also caused $0 in damage from inchidents this year. Surprised Williams didnā€™t try to sign him.
11. Nico Hulkenberg šŸ“‰ [41]: Proud of the teamā€™s progress and consistent points scoring this year. ā€œIt was real fun to be part of the process, fun to be part of this team ā€“ Iā€™ve really enjoyed myself these two years and leaving happy and with a smile.ā€ Something tells me 2025 at Sauber will be less smiling and more frowning.
12. Yuki Tsunoda [30]: On the bad start that killed his race: ā€œIā€™m 99% sure the clutch was stuck, never in my life have I had anti-stall at the start and just canā€™t move at all. I donā€™t think I did anything wrong.ā€
13. Lance Stroll [24]: ā€œYeah, we were racing, but [Iā€™m] looking forward to some time off and [to then] come back next year.ā€ Oh Lance. Maybe Newey will light a fire under him next year.
14. Esteban Ocon [23]: Laura Muller is set to become his race engineer at Haas - the first woman to ever hold the position in the sports 75 year history.
15. Kevin Magnussen [16]: On earning the fastest lap of the race (which is now the circuit lap record): ā€œI think they just wanted to let me feel the car one last time on low fuel and new tiresā€¦Formula 1 cars in these conditionsā€¦itā€™s phenomenal.ā€ Reflecting on his career: ā€œI wanted to win, I wanted to be champion. I didnā€™t manage that but on the other side, I was a small kid dreaming of Formula 1 25 years ago and I managed to get 10 years in the sport that I desperately dreamt of competing in. Thatā€™s been a real privilege.ā€
16. Alex Albon [12]: On not quite having enough to score points last weekend: ā€œHonestly, the tires held on but the temperature didnā€™t. With the track cooling down, I basically couldnā€™t drive quick enough to keep the temperature in the tires. In the last 10 laps, the tires got colder and colder and I died.ā€ Clarification to ease your mind: He didnā€™t actually die.
17. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: The rumors are flying - eight figures are allegedly on the table for a return to motorsport in Australiaā€™s Supercars series, or even NASCAR, or even the GM F1 bid. Take it all with a grain of salt, as they say. Never really liked that phrase tbh. Oh hereā€™s one I found: ā€œSip it, donā€™t chug it.ā€ Yeah, thatā€™s the ticket.
18. Ollie Bearman [7]: Currently hibernating until March.
19. Franco Colapinto [5]: Wasnā€™t satisfied with his last few races but says heā€™s ā€œvery happy for the opportunity, and hopefully I can come back in the future.ā€
20. Zhou Guanyu [4]: Rocked a special helmet for his teammate bestie in his last GP. These two would be P1 if points were awarded for teammate friendship.
21. Liam Lawson [4]: Insists Abu Dhabi was ā€œone of my better racesā€ despite the DNF. We actually had really, really good pace throughout the raceā€¦even if Iā€™m running out of the race or a lap down, Iā€™m going to push anyway because Iā€™m trying to show something while Iā€™m in the car.ā€ Rumor is heā€™s shown enough to become Maxā€™s teammate.
22. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On crashing out of the race: ā€œthis is not the way I want to finish, which is why Iā€™m not done yet.ā€ Heā€™ll have to serve a five place grid penalty if he does eventually find himself in an F1 seat again.
23. Logan Sargeant [0]: Will compete in the European Le Mans Series for IDEC Sport co-run by Genesis ahead of itā€™s 2026 WEC entry - which could put him in line for the WEC project.
24. Jack Doohan [0]: A mistake free P15 finish ainā€™t too bad a debut: ā€œHappy to finish in the same pace as others on the same strategy towards the end of the race, so just looking forward to taking this all in next season.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ†ļø McLaren [666]: TP Stella gave credit to the late Gil de Ferran as an instrumental person in turning the team around: "Gil has always been on my side. He was my advisor, my personal consultant and if we implemented a culture, if we created a belief, if we were able to increase the standards to the level that was required, this is also because Gil was part of the process."
šŸ„ˆ Ferrari [652]: Will supply GM/Cadillac with engines on a ā€œmulti-yearā€ deal starting in 2026. The new squad plans to eventually build their own, but may not be ready in time for their 2028 target.
šŸ„‰ Red Bull [589]: Christian Horner predicts a ā€œmassively closeā€ battle at the top in 2025 and says the ā€œbiggest winner will be F1.ā€ I think us fans will be winners too, Christian.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [468]: Toto to Lewis: ā€œWhatever the future holds, just remember we will always be your people, because every dream needs a team.ā€ Put that on a poster.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [94]: Alonso is contracted through 2026 - where heā€™ll turn 45 mid-season. Heā€™s treating the first year of new regs like it will be his last. But Iā€™ll believe the retirement when I see it.
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine [65]: TP Oakes on getting Doohan in early: ā€œI have a lot of admiration for him [Ocon], but I think also we have to do whatā€™s right for us. And getting Jack in the car earlier, itā€™s a big advantage when we look to next year.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [58]: NYT Feature: How the team is climbing out of F1ā€™s doldrums. TP Komatsu called 2024 ā€œVery positive, uplifting, successful, enjoyable.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ VCARB [46]: Citing confusion on their team name, theyā€™ve said theyā€™ll be embracing the ā€œRacing Bullsā€ moniker next season. Everyone tried call you that! Why didnā€™t they just say that in the first place instead of insisting it was ā€œRBā€?
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [17]: Prepared to make sacrifices on 2025 car to focus on 2026. Itā€™s the smart long term move. Will also be easier if they have less crashes next yearā€¦
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [4]: After Mattia Binotto said he wouldnā€™t have signed Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari TP Vasseur shot back: ā€œI am not sure Hamilton would have gone to Sauber! I am happy that so many people have time to comment on our choices. I am focused on our work, because when I was at Sauber, I was not talking about Ferrari." Point Fred. Solid Zinger.

  • App of the Year: F1TV earned the crown in Apple TVā€™s annual awards. I gotta support this, I highly recommend checking it out, I have it for Roku. Itā€™s ~80 bucks for the year and has every session, quali, race live, plus pre and post shows, and tons of other content. Worth every penny. And theyā€™re not even paying me to say that!
