PLP Season 2 Edition 25

Itā€™s Race Weekend!

Everybody strap in because this weekend kicks off our first triple header of the season (with the second being in October and third in November). Three straight weekends of races means there will be plenty of news to deliver right here for the next few weeks. Which is great, because more action actually makes my job easier. Itā€™s finding all the best info in the slower weeks that is a real challenge for my woolgathering research abilities.

I did research terms to call my brain that tried to convey my ADHD tendencies without being too hard on ā€˜ol noggin, and found ā€œwoolgatheringā€. Means ā€œindulgence in aimless thought or dreamy imaginingā€. Yea that tracks.

But upon further research, according to the National Gallery of Victoria: ā€œā€˜Woolgatheringā€™ was a sixteenth-century term for the trade of collecting loose tufts of wool caught on thorns and fences by passing sheep. Later, it became a phrase that embodied daydreaming. The wordā€™s association with dreaming and aloofness can be traced back to the reputation of woolgatherers for having trivial livelihoods that ā€˜necessitated much wandering and little purposeā€™.ā€

Dang, that turned out to harsh after allā€¦

Schedule for this weekend in EST:

  • FP1: Friday, June 21st @ 7:30am

Kinda looks like a crab šŸ“ø formula1.com

Weā€™ve got 66 laps this weekend around the track built as part of the 1992 Olympic development program, one with which the drivers are very familiar as itā€™s often featured in Winter testing. Itā€™s got two DRS zones, a mix of high and low speeds through 14 corners, one of which is the tricky right hander of turn 3 which is a great way to evaluate a carā€™s balance. Tire degradation should be high after handling the high speed turns even with the hardest compounds available for this weekend - so nailing the downforce set up will be critical.

Commentator and former Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer shares his thoughts on the circuit: ā€œBarcelona is a nice circuit, but everyone knows it like the back of their hand, which kind of makes it feel like home, because itā€™s the one that we have historically spent a lot of time driving at. Itā€™s really flowing and tough on the neck and the body because of the long corners coming through Turns 3 to 4 and Turn 9. Itā€™s also tough on the front-left tire, with tire wear generally high in Barcelona thanks to abrasive tarmac.ā€

Barcelona will be a key battleground for Red Bullā€™s challengers. The track should play to their strengths - so if Ferrari, McLaren, or Mercedes can mount a strong challenge here, that bodes well for competitiveness in the remaining races. Watch to see if Ferrari can bounce back after a dreadful outing in Canada, if Mercedes can take another step, and if McLaren can continue to show theyā€™ve got the quickest all around car.

Many teams are bringing upgrades this weekend (some team specific details later in this issue). But why is Barcelona such a popular race to bring upgrades to? A few reasons:

  • Location: Itā€™s a short flight from all the teamā€™s factories, making it easier logistically.

  • Itā€™s the first race of a triple header, and the start of 5 races in 6 weeks. Nailing upgrades here provides a lot of value in a short period of time, giving other teams less time to respond.

  • The circuit itself is a good all-around test with high and mediums speed corners, which emphasizes aero performance and provides good data to judge improvements

Likely a Max win hereā€¦ But Iā€™m fascinated to see how the closest challengers respond. Also, thereā€™s even a 40% chance of rain on Sundayā€¦

Red Bull to Rivals: ā€œStop DoWing Thatā€

Pushing the rules to the limit has always been a staple in motorsport - and so has complaining about other teams figuring out how to do it ways you havenā€™t been able to leverage yourself. In the latest installment of this phenomenon, Red Bull has taken a position antithetical with their parent companyā€™s popular slogan.

After Mercedes found speed in Canada two weeks ago in part to a new front wing upgrade, the top dogs took notice of some unusual bending from the component seen at high speeds. Theyā€™ve made an informal complaint to the FIA, seemingly to plant a seed about what they view as a violation - even though the wings have passed technical examinations thus far. Ferrari and McLaren are understood to have been included in the stink for overly flexible front pieces as well.

Classic rule book push and pull between the teams here. If these wings arenā€™t found to be illegal, watch for Red Bull to adopt a similar method themselves to take advantage of the aero gains that can be found in both slow and fast corners from this design.

Kimi Antonelli šŸ¤ Olivia Rodrigo: Getting Their Driverā€™s License

Last weekend the FIA announced they were adding a clause to allow Super Licenses to be granted at 17 years of age, although the current F1 restriction is 18. (A Super License is necessary to compete in F1 - you can check out the requirements here). The language now reads: Article 13.1.2 of Appendix L: "At the sole discretion of the FIA, a driver judged to have recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition may be granted a Super License at the age of 17 years old." I more of a fan of appendices M through Z to be honest.

This decision paves the way for baby-faced Mercedes protĆ©gĆ© Kimi Andrea Antonelli to enter F1 sooner rather than later. The rule change means we could see him in a free practice sometime this year, or maybe even occupying Logan Sargeantā€™s seat prior to the seasonā€™s conclusion. In any case - it seems that his occupation of the departing Hamiltonā€™s spot at Mercedes is all but ON for 2025 - though no official announcement has been made yet to that effect.

Cut to sad Logan:

You got you super license last weekā€¦ just like we always talked aboutā€¦ Now you drive along in my seatā€¦ Yeah I thought it was forever, but now you drive along in my seatā€¦

(Sorry Logan)

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [194]: Takes the helmet award this week: Check out this orange beaut. This will pair nicely with the clouds of orange flair smoke in Austria next weekend at the Red Bull Ring.
šŸ„ˆ Charles Leclerc [138]: Took place in the Olympic torch relay as the iconic symbol passed through Monaco ahead of this summerā€™s games in Paris. Didnā€™t we just have an Olympics? Apparently the Olympic charter states that events that rely on mechanical propulsion are not allowed. I guess that makes sense.. supposed to be pure human ability. And maybe some PEDs.
šŸ„‰ Lando Norris [131]: Heā€™s loving the increased competition as much as we are: ā€œIt's only going to make our life betterā€¦now there will probably be eight cars which are fighting up there and challenging us all together, so itā€™s exciting for us, exciting for probably everyone watchingā€
4ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [108]: Reportedly has offers from all teams currently with an open seat, and plans to make his decision soon: ā€œI know what options are on the table. I'm ready to make a decision and that decision will come quickly."
5ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [107]: Acknowledged the need for a ā€œsuccessful weekendā€ after the ā€œdisasterā€ in Canada. On this weekendā€™s race: ā€œItā€™s a circuit I know very well and the RB20 should be quick around this type of track.ā€ All signs point to Red Bull being more comfortable here. Will be interesting to see if their rivals can keep up the pressure and if Perez can turn his fortune around.
6ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [81]: While heā€™s taken a step forward, he wants to show better consistency from weekend to weekend: "I think there have been good moments here and thereā€¦the first few rounds were quite promising, a couple of difficult races in the middle, but on the whole, I feel like I've taken a good step forward in quite a few areas from last year.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [69]: From The Race: Does he have what it takes to become the team leader? Heā€™s had the pace against Hamilton in Quali this year. While he can deliver under pressure, he has made a few mistakes in big moments over the past calendar year - which may be attributed to trying to over compensate for the carā€™s deficiencies.
8ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [55]: Offered this on the exorbitant ticket prices for the British GP next month: ā€œWe have to watch ticket prices. Itā€™s hugely expensive and itā€™s too high. The sport wonā€™t like that Iā€™m saying that, but Iā€™m just thinking from the perspective of the fans and their families.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [41]: ā€œUnfairā€ to be compared to Ferrari or Mercedes who have had continuity for many years, but believes in the teamā€™s prospects: ā€œI think this team and this project has all the ingredients to be successful.ā€
šŸ”Ÿ Yuki Tsunoda [19]: Gasly on his former teammate: ā€œHe had to learn and mature in his driving and the way he races. I think weā€™ve seen that this year. Heā€™s minimizing the mistakes, very competitive, manages to get the points and the job done most of the time. Heā€™s a very reliable driver.ā€
11. Lance Stroll [17]: Confirms the renewal of his unique rolling contract will be announced ā€œsoon.ā€ What is the opposite of silly season? Itā€™s this.
12. Daniel Ricciardo [9]: With upgrades coming, expects some tight battles this weekend: ā€œBarcelona is always a track where everyone brings updates, so I think itā€™s going to be a really competitive weekend. Iā€™m excited to drive it with the faster last sector that they changed for last year.ā€ The last sector chicane was removed last year, but Ricciardoā€™s return was after the 2023 Spanish GP.
13. Oliver Bearman [6]: Will drive FP1 for Haas on Friday as he remains under serious consideration for a 2025 seat with the team.
14. Nico Hulkenberg [6]: Wants the team to investigate potential aero issues with the car that he thinks cost the team points after he wasnā€™t comfortable all weekend in Canada.
15. Pierre Gasly [3]: Not looking forward to the upcoming triple header, saying the team could be in for a ā€œroughā€ run as no major upgrades are planned over the next few races.
16. Alex Albon [2]: Williamsā€™ Head of Vehicle Performance Dave Robson says their lead driver has ā€œeverything he needsā€ to be a future world champion. ā€œHe's exceptionally quick. He's also very smart and his feedback that goes into those set-ups is important.ā€ Iā€™d like to take a look at that list and addā€¦ uh, idkā€¦ a faster car? Canā€™t deny the talent though.
17. Esteban Ocon [2]: On working with Hamilton coming up through the Mercedes program: ā€œHeā€™s got a very busy life in general and seeing how he switches his focus from one thing to another, for me that kind of amazed meā€¦ He always had his paper boards with notes [to] not to forget things from one year to another, or one session to another. This is what I do as well now.ā€
18. Kevin Magnussen [1]: On what Haas has told him about their plans for 2025: ā€œTheyā€™ve told me that theyā€™re not in a rush, and thatā€™s okay ā€“ theyā€™re in control there. I think itā€™s a very open market at the moment, and lots of pieces have to fall in the puzzle. Slowly itā€™s starting to go together, and hopefully weā€™ll all have our future sorted quite soon.ā€
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Open to returning to Alpine where he acted as a development driver earlier in his career, saying he doesnā€™t want to take a reserve driver role or take a year off. ā€œNothing has been confirmed, but I feel like there should be a spot for me in the future on this grid, but I just donā€™t know where.ā€
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Could be in the mix to join Alpine next season, says heā€™s ā€œconfidentā€ he wonā€™t be left without a seat in 2025.
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: TP Vowles admits the team ā€œneeds moreā€ from him to save his seat for 2025. He also admitted the #1 target is Sainz for 2025ā€¦ so Loganā€™s future is riding on him as well. At least this weekend heā€™ll finally have the same spec car as his teammateā€¦ letā€™s see what he can do with it.

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [301]: After Silverstone officials blamed lack of ticket sales on Red Bull dominance, Max retorted: "I don't think it's my fault. The current F1 season is very exciting, with several teams fighting for wins lately. If a promoter cannot fill all the seats, maybe they need to first look at themselves and see what they're doing wrong. In other places they're managing to fill the stands quite easily." šŸŽ¤
šŸ„ˆFerrari [252]: Bringing a new floor, revised rear body work, and diffuser upgrades this weekend to increase overall load and efficiency. The team worked hard to bring the updates this weekend ahead of the originally scheduled Silverstone release.
šŸ„‰McLaren [212]: Some 2024 stats: Norris and Piastri are the only drivers to complete all laps this season and are the only driver pairing with a 100% Q3 appearance rate. Lando is the only driver to score points in every race so far this season.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [124]: James Allison on the teamā€™s upgrade strategy to make their way to the front: ā€œOur challenge is just to keep those upgrades arriving at a pace that the others cannot keep up with. ā€œIn doing that, just bullying our car to the front by virtue of the effort made by everybody here over the coming weeks and months to get the car so that it can have its Montreal weekend or better at any track that we face in the future.ā€ Love a good brute force method.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [58]: TP Krack says the team is now battling inflated expectations after their over achievement in 2023, and are being judged too harshly for their 2024 results. ā€œThese processes take time and there are not many businesses where you have less time than Formula 1.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ RB [28]: Bringing their biggest upgrade of the season to Barcelona in hopes of taking the fight to Aston. New bodywork, floor, sidepods, and rear wing are included.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [7]: Bearman will make his second of six FP1 appearances this weekend. ā€œon a weekend like this, Iā€™m very busy, I have a lot of mental pressure, a lot of stuff to take in. But I like the challenge, itā€™s good preparation.ā€ Six?? Didnā€™t realize it was that many.
8ļøāƒ£ Alpine [5]: Thinking of abandoning Renault engines for 2026 and becoming a customer team. Options could be Red Bull (which may not want to supply a third team in their first year with new power units), or take Mercedesā€™ open customer spot since Aston Martin is switching to Honda PUs.
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [2]: TP Vowles says their on the brink of signing some ā€œbig namesā€ in their technical organization. ā€œWe were a team that were 10th [in the standings] for many yearsā€¦ Yes, last year we were seventh and we started this year poorly, [but] keep an eye out for us. Weā€™re now starting to put performance to the car race by race, and this is a different entity to what it was before.ā€
šŸ”Ÿ Kick Sauber [0]: If Sainz goes elsewhere, Ocon is a top target for next year. Signs are pointing to Sainz at Williams next year, with a possible announcement this weekendā€¦

Off the Grid

  • Ferrari became the first manufacturer to win both the Monaco GP and the 24H of Le Mans in the same year since 1934. Alfa Romeo, aka ā€œThose other Italiansā€ accomplished the feat 90 years ago.

  • The countdown is on: The F1 movie produced by Lewis Hamilton and staring Brad Pitt will be released in North America on June 27th, 2025. Only 371 days to go.

  • F1ā€™s traveling exhibition is set for itā€™s London debut. One of the displayed pieces of Romain Grosjeanā€™s mangled Haas from the 2020 Bahrain GP. If you havenā€™t seen the infamous crash, you can watch it here. Beware, itā€™s a brutal one. The good news is he was able to jump out of the flaming car, escaping with only some burns on his hands.

Quick Quiz (Answer)

Nico Rosberg 9(!) years ago in 2015. Barcelona is a classic racing circuit where the top dogs usually shine.

Would be cool to get a photo with Lewis Hamilton. Or you could settle for this guy who was wandering around Barcelona earlier this week, dubbed ā€œLuis Hamilnotā€ šŸ”½

Pretty convincing. Especially with the poor resolution here. šŸ“ø @ScrewderiaF1 on X
