PLP Season 2 Edition 39

Welp not every race can be as good as Azerbaijan. And for me Singapore was quite literally a snoozefest. I fell asleep for 15 laps sometime around lap 20 or so, and maybe even dozed for a bit in the 40’s as well. It was definitely the races fault and not the old fashioned, half bottle of Barolo, and numerous pumpkin beers that were indulged in the night before. It’s officially Fall now, so pumpkin beers are allowed.

While there were very few in the race, there was still a highlight to be found last weekend: F1 Arcade up in Beantown. If you’re ever in the area it’s worth the visit. Next week I’ll share my thorough, on the ground, potentially Pulitzer prize winning full investigative report - but this week, we’ve got some other news to get to…

Daniel Ricciardo Out at VCARB

Simpler times… Danny after his Monaco win in 2018

Everyone’s favorite Aussie, Drive to Survive star, a fan and fellow driver favorite, with a big smile and even bigger heart… Daniel Ricciardo a.k.a. the Honey Badger is officially without an F1 seat. VCARB announced Thursday he’ll be replaced by Liam Lawson for the remaining six races of the season.

He tallied 8 wins, 32 podiums, and 1329 points across 258 GPs in his 14 year career where he drove for HRT, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault, McLaren, and VCARB. He finished P3 in the Drivers’ Championship in 2014 and 2016.

Danny’s statement on Instagram read: ā€œI’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild and wonderful and been a journey. To the teams and individuals that have played their part, thank you. To the fans who love the sport sometimes more than me haha thank you. It’ll always have its highs and lows but it’s been fun and truth be told I wouldn’t change it. Until the next adventure.ā€

Everyone across the grid came out to show respect with posts from Lewis, Red Bull, Christian Horner, Zak Brown, many current drivers, F1 media, Netflix, you name it. It’s clear how much he was liked and respected in the sport.

If you watched the broadcast last weekend, it was clear this was coming, everyone seemed to know (especially Danny himself if you saw any interviews) even though it was unofficial. He spent extra time in the cockpit after the race, savoring the final time he would be there. VCARB could have done him a solid by announcing it before the race. Why not make Singapore a more official goodbye?

In steps Liam Lawson, who impressed in Ricciardo’s absence last season. He’ll get a chance to prove himself to the energy drinkers, saying ā€œI’ve dreamed of being an F1 driver since I was a kid…extremely grateful and excited to get to work.ā€

Some say he should never have left Red Bull, but it’s good to hear he wouldn’t change anything. Which I believe, but would understand if he second guessed it… but also who wants to play second fiddle to Max? Lead driver energy! Will Buxton even named him his ā€œshould have been championā€ of the 2010’s had things fell in his favor - he had the ability but not the good career timing that sometimes comes down to luck.

Like a lot of people I fell in love with his smile appreciate his personality in a totally platonic way and will be sad to see him go. I get that the team needs to see what Liam’s got, and it’s an unforgiving sport. Would have loved to see what he could have done alongside Max again though.

No doubt he’ll have opportunities in other series, and I’m sure a media or PR job is already in his inbox. Plus he’s got F1 money and a clothing brand so I’m sure he’s in no rush to decide. Whatever it is, I’ll still follow his career closely because he is a big part of why I got into Formula 1. We’ll miss you on the grid, Danny 🤠 šŸ«”

Singapore GP Recap

šŸ„‡ NOR - 🄈 VER - šŸ„‰ PIA

DNF: ALB - MAG

Fastest Lap: RIC

DoTD: RIC

Last weekend’s race, a.k.a. what should have been the Daniel Ricciardo goodbye tour, started off with with some qualifying highlights (lowlights?) with Checo out in Q2, Sainz crashing on an out lap, Leclerc getting his only Q3 lap time deleted, Oscar P5 behind Mercedes and one spot ahead of a Hulk with a solid P6. And that’s about where the highlights ended… unless of course, you’re a hardcore Lando fan.

In the race, Lando FINALLY shook the demons and got a good start off the line, beating Max into turn 1.. then never looked back, channeling the Max we’re used to seeing by quickly building a double digit second lead. He did almost pull a George from last year TWICE, locking up on lap 29 and coming millimeters (not converting to the queen’s (king’s?) english here, I just needed a smaller unit than inches. Insert USA chant) from hitting the wall. On lap 45 he flirted with the wall where George binned it in 2023, once again almost ending his race. Phew. Now that would have caused quite a stir on the internets..

His teammate Oscar went long in the first stint, and was able to overtake both Mercedes to get onto the podium. Charles Leclerc fought his way up to P5, also trying to pass Merc on fresher tires at the end - but could only get by Lewis (who tried an opposite strategy that didn’t quite pay off by starting the race on softs) but not George before the checkered flag. Alonso and Hulk both took home points - while Colapinto’s bold move at turn one put him in a position to almost pick up some for himself, but ultimately had to settle for P11.

Daniel Ricciardo took home the fastest lap on the final lap of the race, the team later saying they wanted to give him a chance to go out strong. Some cynics called shenanigans on Red Bull, thinking they themselves made the call to steal a point from Lando who had it at the time. Fans showed their appreciation for the Honey Badger, voting him Driver of the Day in what was very likely his last ever F1 race.

Max Slapped with Community Service

In one of the bizarre side stories this weekend, the defending champ was reprimanded by the FIA after declaring his car was ā€œf****dā€ in Thursday’s press conference. Looking to get the drivers to cut down on naughty language, they doled out a punishment of ā€œobligation to accomplish some work of public interest.ā€ Now that is some impressive corporate speak.

Max was NOT happy with the decision. He followed up with short, sometimes even one word answers in media sessions the rest of the weekend, and even held impromptu sessions himself with journalists outside of the officials one the drivers are required to attend. He even said these kinds of things would go towards deciding his future:

"When you can't be yourself, you have to deal with these kinds of silly things...I think now, I'm at a stage of my career that I don't want to be dealing with this all the time. It's really tiring…For me, that is not a way of continuing in the sport, that's for sure." FIA President MBS has said on the matter ā€œWe’re not rappers you know.ā€ The ā€˜ol classic generational gap rap music comment.

Other drivers took Max’s side in thinking the punishment is ridiculous. Oscar Piastri, cheeky as always, had a great line in the cool down room after the race. When a replay showed Lando almost crashing with a huge lead halfway through, he quipped ā€œWithout using swear words, how did you feel at that moment?ā€

Love the Oscar sass. But seriously, I think the FIA should back off here. Do you really want your star drivers this annoyed with something so silly? Idk how they think they’ll get young, rich, top of their game athletes to start using ā€œgolly gee willikersā€ instead of an F-bomb. On second thought, I can definitely see George saying that.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [331]: Says P2 was a ā€œgood achievementā€ based on how the weekend started. He reflected on his former teammate’s [Ricciardo] career as well: ā€œHe will for sure be remembered as a very fast driver, I think everyone knows that, but also as a great guy in the paddock.ā€ He also agreed to get Danny Ric a nice Christmas present if he ends up winning the championship by 1 point, after the Aussie driver stole the fastest lap from Lando. Wouldn’t that be something…
🄈Lando Norris [279]: While ā€œflyingā€ the whole race, says he still had ā€œtoo many close calls.ā€ There were two significant near misses when he almost put the car in the wall with a huge lead. Ifs and buts, candies and nuts. The title fight is still on!
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [245]: Takes blame for quali mistake that saw his Q3 lap deleted, and has ā€œmixed feelingsā€ after climbing back to finish P5 in the GP. ā€œI will bounce back next weekend - I mean next race weekend, because now we’ve got a bit of a break.ā€ Ugh don’t remind me Charles…
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [237]: Securing a podium after being out-qualified by Mercedes was a ā€œgreat result.ā€ Cheeky Oscar struck again by tweeting: ā€œWithout swearing, that was blinking warm. Good race, nice podium.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [190]: On his bizarre Q3 crash during an out lap that left him to start the race in P10, he blamed ā€œCold tires or a big snap.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [174]: Sees the team’s brief run on top slipping away: ā€œWe have lost some form to the leaders in the past few races and we’re working hard to figure out why that is.ā€
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [155]: ā€œOur pace in qualifying however made us believe we could achieve more. Today was no doubt a difficult race for us, both challenging in terms of our pace but also physically.ā€ Also you gotta check out this picture of George here. I’ve never seen him look so sinister.
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [144]: Q2 exit and P10 finish was a ā€œcomplete disaster. Once we were on a similar tire age behind Nico it was… that was pretty much it.ā€ Also, I forgot to switch him out of my fantasy lineup. I bet he’d be upset about that too if he knew.
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [62]: Says street circuits ā€œcannot hide lack of performanceā€ and looks for the team to find performance as they continue to lose ground to the top teams. He did take a positive though, saying ā€œEighth is better than we expected coming here to Singapore.ā€
šŸ”ŸNico Hulkenberg šŸ“ˆ [24]: On his defensive drive to take P9 ahead of Perez: ā€œI don’t care if it’s a Red Bull,ā€ but added that it was ā€œstressfulā€ keeping him at bay during the whole second stint.
11. Lance Stroll šŸ“‰ [24]: After his fourth Q1 exit this season, said he ā€œstruggled a lot with balance and grip.ā€
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Radio of the day award winner: Race Engineer: ā€œPerez and Colapinto are fighting. There could be something coming to us, let’s be on it.ā€ Yuki: ā€œToo much information.ā€ šŸ˜†
13. Alex Albon [12]: Wasn’t happy with Franco’s ā€œdivebombā€ into turn 1 at the time, but had this to say after the race: ā€œThe move was on, it was just a bit of a shame that everyone was going into the corner and then everyone hesitated to turn left and had to let Franco past. Obviously I was on the other side of it, so it happens.ā€
14. Daniel Ricciardo [12]: šŸ’˜
15. Pierre Gasly [8]: Shares a blunt assessment: ā€œWe are not quick or competitiveā€ after team fails to score points in third straight race.
16. Ollie Bearman [7]: How he’s ā€œjust getting startedā€ and the challenges he sees ahead in F1 in Beyond the Grid podcast interview.
17. Kevin Magnussen [6]: On his late DNF after brushing the wall: ā€œSometimes you hit a rough spot and it cuts the tire.ā€ Well he did say he was going to f*** s*** up… we just didn’t know it would be his own tires.
18. Esteban Ocon [5]: Ocon demonstrating that to an F1 driver, everything looks like a steering wheel - even at the dentist’s office.
19. Franco Colapinto [4]: Will Buxton called his turn 1 overtake of four cars ā€œmagic.ā€ The rookie himself said ā€œI did the best start I could. There was a pretty nice gap and I went for it and it worked out.ā€ Ya got a lotta moxie, kid.
20. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Was pleased with his race pace: ā€œFrom my side I think it was very strong pace compared to how we are with one-lap pace…I’ve always been stronger in the race this year than the quali just because I’m struggling finding the comfort zone in that car at the moment.ā€
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: Will have an IndyCar test with Meyer Shank Racing in November.
22. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Looking to get his future sorted: ā€œThat’s obviously high on my priority list because it’s starting to feel almost like Christmas time, you know it’s getting close so better get it sorted.ā€ C’mon now Fall just started! Don’t gimme this Christmas stuff already. I just got done fighting off the cozy crazies who push for Fall too early, I can’t take on another battle with the Christmas Kooks.

Constructor’s Corner

šŸ„‡McLaren [516]: Poached Red Bull’s Chief Strategist Will Courtena, who will join the papaya people as Sporting Director, once his gardening leave is up in mid-2026.
🄈Red Bull [475]: TP Christian Horner taking the positives: ā€œOn Friday night, I think if you’d have said we’ll qualify on the front row and take second place, a significant amount ahead of the rest of the field, we’d have certainly taken that. We’ve now got the best part of a month to work hard and try and bring some performance to the car in Austin.ā€ It’s a good result considering how dreadful the car looked in practice. Prediction: Red Bull returns to Red Bull form in Austin. I think Max wins.
šŸ„‰Ferrari [441]: TP Vasseur was happy with the race recovery after a dismal qualifying. ā€œThe big emotion is it is always good to finish the weekend on a positive, and if you weigh up the race, it’s sure you increase a little bit the frustration from Saturday but I’d rather have the frustration from a poor qualifying and a good race than a poor race, so it is okay it was like this.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [329]: Some good insight from Toto Wolff: ā€œI think we’ve read the race wrong…We took a decision based on historic [data] that this race was basically a procession, Monaco-like and that the soft tire would give [Hamilton] an opportunity at the start, basically the only overtaking opportunity. But with the rear tire deg we had, there was only one way and that was backwards. But it doesn’t hide away from the fact that when the car is slow, you’re just slow.ā€
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [86]: Alonso says the team must improve before Newey arrives, and step up next year.
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: TP Mekies on Daniel: ā€œHe has brought a lot of experience and talent to the Team with a fantastic attitude, which has helped everyone to develop and foster a tight team spirit… Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track and never without that smile.ā€ See, everyone loves the smile…
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [31]: Guenther Steiner lands first blow in legal battle vs Haas, who allege he improperly used trademarked photos in his book. What’s the opposite of amicable divorce?
8ļøāƒ£ Williams [16]: TP Vowles says Colapinto will be set up as a test and simulation driver for the team if he does not immediately land a seat.
9ļøāƒ£ Alpine [13]: Bruno Famin confirms Renault will continue to produce engines for it’s World Endurance Championship cars despite the F1 team looking to move on in 2026.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Bottas rumored to be the leading contender for the remaining 2025 seat.

Tech Talk

  • Problem Solved? Mark Hughes and Giorgio Piola explore if Ferrari’s flexi-front wing solution a la McLaren and Mercedes have fixed their mid-season struggles.

  • McLaren Concessions: In an attempt to get ahead of a potential review, the papayas offered to adjust their mini-DRS rear wing design ahead of the Singapore GP. Lando certainly didn’t need it.

  • Red Bull’s Tweak: After some rough practices, they decided to maximize aero grip at the expense of the previous mechanical set up - playing into the cars strengths rather than trying to allow it to attack kerbs like McLaren.

Off the Grid

  • Lizard Laps: The honorary Singapore mascot made an appearance last weekend, putting up some purple sectors under the lights.

  • Life in the Pitlane: Red Bull mechanic Calum Nicholas (you’ve definitely seen him on the broadcast, tall dude with dreadlocks) is releasing a memoir in February 2025 about life behind the scenes in F1. Def picking this up. Reading is fundamental.

  • Madrid Needs Money: The planned 2026 GP in Spain’s capital has failed to attract private investors. Head of economy, innovation, and finance on the city’s council Engracia Hidalgo said ā€œIt has been confirmed that there are no qualified partners capable of meeting the strict requirements.ā€

Quick Question (Answer)

They should have put him in the Red Bull seat! See what he can do up there! Am I biased? Maybe.

Three long weeks until the next race. We really need a Max DNF one of these races to reeeeeally put the pressure on. If he can maintain P2 the rest of the way, he’ll take home a fourth straight ship. Anyway, here’s a live look at Daniel snagging fastest lap from Lando to spoil the potential grand slam (pole, fastest lap, lead every lap, win the race), a last parting gift for his old teammate šŸ”½
