Saudi Arabia GP Recap, Miami GP Preview
PLP Season 3 Edition 8
Even better than coming back after a week off? Coming back to a Sprint after a week off. It may not be everyoneās cuppaā, but to me itās just better when the sessions count.
Itās like when you play soccer as a kid, arenāt the scrimmages just so much better than doing a bunch of drills? Even when you have to scrimmage the older girlsā team that practices at the same time as you on the next field over and they wipe the floor with you because none of your guys have gone through puberty yet and they have? And theyāre not afraid to knock you around a little bit and the whole thing is a bit too intense for your liking?
Anyway, letās see if Oscar can continue to be the older girl on the grid this weekend as we head to Miami. Times in E.D.T. (Eastern Dale* Time)
FP1: Friday, May 2nd @ 12:30pm
Sprint Quali: Friday, May 2nd @ 4:30pm
Sprint: Saturday, May 3rd @ 12:00pm
GP Quali: Saturday, May 3rd @ 4:00pm
Grand Prix: Sunday, May 4th @ 4:00pm
*Dale (Dah-lĆØ) if is an expression that can be heard on many tracks from 2016ās Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album Grammy winner Pitbull, who is certainly Miamiās most proud resident considering he mentions the fact he lives there in every song heās ever created. In his own words: ā[Dale] means a lot of things; it depends on how youāre using it. Itās my way of checking out ā āDale, Iām out of hereā ā or my way of getting started. Itās definitely the word I hear most. I travel around the world and run into people that speak no English, no Spanish, and they say ādale.'ā
Well, there ya have it. āDaleā can mean either āIām out of hereā or āLetās get started.ā Kind of confusing.
Quick Question!
Did Max deserve a penalty for the turn 1 maneuver against Oscar in Jeddah last race? |
Last week we asked who you think takes the WDC title. Oscar was at the top, followed closely by Max, then Lando. Even some love for Lewis Hamilton. Iāll call it right now, I think PLP readers picked the final standings in the correct order - Oscar, Max, Lando. Remind me of this in December.
Race Recap: Saudi Arabi
Podium: š„ PIA - š„ VER - š„ LEC
DNF: GAS - TSU
Fastest Lap: NOR
DotD: VER - Max finally gets one. I agree here. He finished less than 3s behind Oscar, so it stands to reason heād have taken the victory w/o the 5s penalty
This one ultimately came down to some good āol F1 turn 1 controversy. If you havenāt seen it, just watch even the fifteen seconds of the race highlights to see the move. Oscar got a great jump off the line, and appeared to be ahead of Max at the first apex. Max missed the turn and remained in the lead after running off track, picking up a 5s penalty in the process.
This one was super close. I think Max, who was clearly POād after the race about it, has a point. Oscar does take the turn a bit wide, not leaving Max a lot of room, and usually the stewards are forgiving on first lap incidents since the cars are running so tight. Itās a really close call, but I lean towards saying let it go.
More first lap fireworks saw ex-teammates and still bffs Yuki and Pierre come together in a racing incident, triggering an early safety car. Lewis and Lando had some good early battles, with the GOAT showcasing his racecraft by letting the Lando overtake before the DRS detection point, only to take the position right back a couple times when he picked up the speed boost. That extra battle and tire wear may have slowed Lando down juuuuust enough to allow Charles to snag his first podium of the season, just one second ahead of the pursuing papaya. Oscar stopped before Max to get onto the better performing hard tire, and was able to make a daring āround the outside move to pass Hamilton with his fresh rubber.
Halfway through Bortoleto nearly took out his mentor Alonso, who was able to narrowly avoid disaster. On the near miss, Alonso said: āWe are flying back together home, but maybe there will be no dinner for him.ā Harsh, but fair. Leclerc had blistering pace all day, putting in a really good medium stint before passing Russell while on the hards with twelve laps remaining. Mercedes couldnāt quite hook it up all weekend, settling for P5 and P6. Williams had a great weekend with double points, out dueling the trailing VCARBās who picked up a point from Hadjarās P10.

Miami GP Preview

The main straight not being parallel to the circuit name in the graphic is bothering me here. May need to send an email to the webmaster about this one.
If youāre anything like me youāve had āMiamiā, the hit song from Will Smithās 1997 debut album Big Willie Style stuck in your head all week in preparation for this weekendās race. āMiamiā, the second biggest hit from the album, is commonly overshadowed by the Billboard #1 hit āGettin Jiggy Wit Itā, but real ones know itās a banger. Though this yearās grid may need some education on the matter because the song is literally older than half of the drivers.
The track has an Albert Park vibe in that itās a temporary track thatās more of a street circuit, although it was designed with a more permanent feel. Itās set in the Hard Rock complex next to the Miami Dolphins football stadium, and features 19 corners, 3 DRS zones, a long straight, top speeds of 211mph, and even some small elevation changes.
The track is low grip and will see high evolution, meaning timing in qualifying sessions will be crucial as lap times drop throughout the session. Excessive drag on the long straight will be costly, even though you do want some slow cornering help through turns 11-16 where the circuit is rear-limited. Watch for overtaking opportunities at turns 11 and 17, which are big breaking areas after DRS zones. Drivers will need to be mindful of the kerbs through the s-bends in sector 1 in order to have a clean lap.
What to Watch For:
Piastri In the Lead: The McLaren driver battle should continue to be a story throughout the season, as long as the battle remains close. Betting lines currently favor Oscar slightly over Lando for the win this weekend. I think it will. Watch for people to keep saying, āwill Piastri finally crack under the pressure of being in the lead?ā and then it not happen. Canāt phase that guy.
Cāmon Ref: After last weekās turn 1 penalty, watch for extra scrutiny on any close calls this weekend. Especially if Oscar and Max are in a tight battle on track.
Hamilton Solution: Is this the weekend we see Lewis more comfortable in Red? Previously he said heād need āa brain transplantā in order to get right with the car, but the team has been working on some less invasive solutions.
Upgrades: Miami is usually where youāll start to see some decent upgrades across the grid - although bringing them for a Sprint weekend is less than ideal. Keep a look out for some new parts.
Spectacle: Thereās always a lot going on for the first U.S. race weekend. Events, celebs, glam, if youāre into that kinda thing. I really hope they do some kind of awkward driver intro again. If they do watch for Maxās face in particular. He loves that sort of thing.
LEGO brough to scale models of all 10 cars to Miami.
Special Liveries: Check em out. Ferrari once again looks a bit half baked. Give us the full blue lobster look! Sauberās is decent, looks like some of their normal livery got scratched off. And VCARB, my goodness, they continue their rain of livery deliveries because this one is a beaut. They should get participation points for this one. š½

Driver Drama

ā¶ļø Max Verstappen was late to the GP weekend after speculation that he and girlfriend Kelly Piquet have welcomed their first child together, though thereās been no official confirmation yet. A new baby and he got to miss media day? Max must be thrilled. Congrats to the parents of the next great racing prodigy?? I donāt see Max pushing his kid the way he was if I had to guess..
ā¶ļø Championship leader Oscar Piastri āquite enjoysā having the target on his back, adding ānormally that means you are doing something right. Iām pretty relaxed, the gap is very small and we are only at round five or six now, so Iām not too concerned with that.ā
ā¶ļø Lando Norris is aiming to improve his Quali performance this weekend. āItās certainly not because of a lack of speed or lack of ability to do so ā Iāve often led the way in Q1 and Q2, but always when I got to Q3 then itās not gone to plan.ā
ā¶ļø Carlos Sainz got heaps of praise from TP Vowles regarding the two specific ways a driver can help the team: āNumber one is obviously what you see in the car. The second element is where Iāve been very impressed: what heās doing with working with our aerodynamicist team, with our race engineering team, with pretty much everyone throughout our organization on finding those last milliseconds ā heās delivering absolutely above my expectations.ā
ā¶ļø Donāt worry, Alex Albon got some love from the boss as well: "When I first joined, within that first year he stepped up significantly and Iāve seen the same step this year.ā A theory that makes sense is that giving Alex a stronger teammate to compete against will up his own game. So far this season that looks to be the case.
ā¶ļø Thereās a bunch of contenders for HoTW this week. Weāve got Landoās disco ball, Albonās orange (papaya aināt the only fruit in town now), some slick looking designs for the Mercedes fellas, bright yellow Ferrari caps, and real beaut for Jack Doohan that features a koala on the back. Though call here, but Iām gonna give the award to Doohan this week.
ā¶ļø Lewis Hamilton is chairing the Met Gala on Monday. I have no further details on this, my wife just told me to make sure I didnāt forget to include it.
ā¶ļø Helmut Marko on Isack Hadjar: "Isack achieves in races what many rookies in F1 struggle with." Marko said something nice?
ā¶ļø After breaking the record for most Q1 exits, Lance Stroll quipped: āIf you put the McLaren drivers in a Sauber for 10 years, they will have the most Q1 exits.ā Itās a fair point, but I bet you Oscar could drag a Sauber into Q2 on the reg.
ā¶ļø Kimi Antonelli says āthe vibe is greatā around the track but he ādoesnāt know what to expectā when it comes to the race. Something tells me Kimi would be fine driving anywhere on any track, simply relying on vibes.
ā¶ļø Liam Lawson on his new seat: "It clicked very quickly, Japan was an intense weekend but since Bahrain I've felt comfortable in the car. Even if the results haven't shown it, it's felt pretty good."
ā¶ļø Esteban Ocon on his āvery impressiveā race engineer Laura Mueller: āShe's awesome to work with. The amount of hours she puts in is very, very impressive. She doesn't count hours.ā
Quote of the Week
Uh, uh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, uh
Miami, uh, uh
Constructorās Corner

ā¶ļø Red Bull will introduce a new floor this weekend for Max, with Yuki getting the upgrade likely next race. A new baby and now a new floor? What a week.
ā¶ļø Williams boss James Vowles on his driver line-upās double points finish in Jeddah: āWeāre getting more than I paid for.ā Carlos used his old trick to keep teammate Albon in DRS distance to outpace the chasing Hadjar, securing P8 and P9 for the pair last weekend. Teamwork āØ
ā¶ļø Ferrari and Red Bull are reportedly behind on their 2026 engine targets, with Mercedes believed to be in the best position to deliver a strong power unit. George vs Kimi title fight next year?
ā¶ļø Haas TP Komatsu is happy with the teamās progress after a rough start: āMelbourne really exposed the weakness of the VF-25, but the team reacted incredibly well to bring an updated floor already for race three and score 20 points across three races. Every time we send the car out on the track, weāre learning how to get the best out of the VF-25 and how to improve it.ā
Tech Talk
Pit Lane Speed Change? The FIA is reportedly considering allowing 100kph in the pit lane, up from 80kph (50mph to 62mph) which could reduce total pit stop time by 2.5-5s on average, which could make pit stops more attractive and increase race strategy options. This is a great idea that I hadnāt considered. Heck just remove the pit limiter and let them go full gas and make the mechanics wear shin guards in case they catch a front wing to the leg.
Dr. Obbs with a tech thread on the Max-Oscar penalty situation. If you read the telemetry data, it was Max who braked first and Oscar who lifted briefly in order to get alongside.
Off the Grid
Familiar Faces: Rumor is that Segio Perez and Zhou Guanyu are both in talks with Cadillac for seats in 2026. Iāve heard more heat on Checo here, but would be great to see them both back.
The Seat is the title of a new doc coming to Netflix detailing the decision to sign Kimi Antonelli to Mercedes.
What planet is this? McLarenās futuristic looking HQ was used in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.
Madring will be the name of the new Madrid street circuit replacing Barcelona next year. Watch a simulated onboard lap here.
Mexico City will remain on the calendar to at least 2028, with the circuit signing a three year extension.
Quick Question (My answer)
I say let them race!
Catch ya in two weeks before we head back to Europe for Imola. And if keep seeing a flash of light on track this weekend, that might not be the strong Miami sun š½
