Plus: Uncle Sam Supports Andretti and Hulk's Move to Sauber

PLP Season 2 Edition 18

Itā€™s Race Weekend!

This week we kick off the first of 3 U.S. races in Miami with another Sprint weekend, and for the first time in a month and a half weā€™ll have some desirable start times. However, good start times also means a greater chance of weekend plan conflictā€¦ cut to me trying to catch some Sprint action on my phone during an off key version of ā€œHappy Birthdayā€ in between periods of pure chaos at kid birthday party this weekend.

If you are reading this Friday morning and are a junkie like me, donā€™t forget to kick off the weekend with FP1 in a few hours. For the full weekend schedule (in EDT) we got:

  • FP1: Friday, May 3rd @ 12:30pm

  • Sprint Qualifying: Friday, May 3rd @ 4:30pm

  • Sprint Race: Saturday, May 4th @ 12:00pm

  • GP Qualifying: Saturday, May 4th @ 4:00pm

  • Grand Prix: Sunday, May 5th @ 4:00pm

Max won the Miami GP in 2023 (obv) from which starting grid position?

From our last question on how you would rate the Chinese GP weekend from 1-5:

A mixed bag! Hereā€™s what some of you thought of the race:

  • ā€œRacing in the wet has always been the divider of drivers. It showed with Lewis getting second on the grid for the sprint even with how bad the car has been this year. Most people miss the point that we are getting to watch a generational talent in max. What remains to be seen is what happens when and if Adrian Newey leaves. ā€ These are all great points!

  • ā€œThey need to have someone else on the top step of the podium now & again !ā€ Agreed! Believe it or not, RBR wonā€™t be on top foreverā€¦ and maybe sooner rather than later with all the recent news + rumors flying around.

  • ā€œSafety car 2x robbed Perez of 2nd, but over all, duels on track were ho hum.ā€

Miami GP Preview

Back-to-back Sprint races is a nice treat, so enjoy this one because the next one wonā€™t be for another 5 races - in Austria at the end of June. Itā€™s the first time Miami has hosted a Sprint in itā€™s illustrious, famed, world-renowned 3-year tenure on the F1 schedule.

The track has an Albert Park vibe in that itā€™s a temporary track thatā€™s more of a street circuit, although it was designed with a more permanent feel. Itā€™s set in the Hard Rock complex next to the Miami Dolphins (boooo) football stadium, and features 19 corners, 3 DRS zones, a loooong straight, top speeds of 211mph, and even some small elevation changes.

The track is low grip and will see high evolution, meaning timing in qualifying sessions will be crucial as lap times drop throughout the session. Excessive drag on the long straight will be costly, even though you do want some slow cornering help through turns 11-16 where the circuit is rear-limited. Shoutout to our idol @FDataAnalysis for this breakdown.

Itā€™s always a party in Miami, so you know there will some over-the-top quintessentially-American pomp and circumstance. To which I say, why not? Weā€™ve also got upgrades from McLaren, Mercedes, and Alpine, so watch to see if they can figure out the optimal setup in the only 1 hour practice session before it counts.

Uncle Sam Voices Support for Andretti

Perfect timing for the first U.S. race of the season with the host country doing what it does best: Filing legal challenges. Yea baby. 12 U.S. Congress Representatives wrote a letter to the F1 owners demanding justification of their decision to deny Andrettiā€™s bid to join the grid in 2026, citing anti-competitive actions from the group. From the letter: ā€œThe Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 outlaws unreasonable restraints on market competition to produce the best outcome for the American consumer.ā€ Oh damn they coming in with the Sherman Act? This is serious. You donā€™t just drop a Sherman Act reference if you donā€™t mean business.

Andretti Global praised the letter, saying ā€œWe are grateful to the bipartisan members of Congress for their support in challenging this anti-competitive behavior. We remain committed to bringing the first US works team and power unit to F1 and to giving American fans a home team to root for.ā€ Heck yea home team!

Always odd when the government gets involved in sports. Remember during the steroid era in baseball when they questioned Sammy Sosa and he pretended to not be able to speak English. Classic. And honestly smart Iā€™d try to pull the same move if I was him. Anyway, the anti-competition angle does make sense and many people agree that letting Andretti in is the right move. This government intervention has my support. Even if the government does have better things to do. Like fix the tax code and filing process so yours truly doesnā€™t lose his mind every April 14th.

Hulkenberg Signs with Sauber

In a move that pretty much everyone saw coming for a couple month now, last Friday it broke that Nico Hulkenberg has signed a multi-year deal with Sauber (Currently referred to as Kick Sauber, full name Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, and hopefully known as simply ā€œAudiā€ starting in 2026). The 36 year old will return to the team he represented in 2013 and is looking forward to Audiā€™s impending takeover, saying ā€œTo represent the factory team of such a car brand with a power unit made in Germany is a great honor for me.ā€

With Ocon and Gasly possibly on the move, he has a chance to take the crown of most homogenous driver-team nationality pairing. Move over team Frenchie, team German-Guy is coming for you. Ok the name needs work.

Although he just set the record for starts without a podium (208) last race in Shanghai, his career has seen an impressive rebound after not having a seat for 3 years. Heā€™s had a strong start with Haas this season, and might be able to make some noise if Audi can deliver a good car. Would love to seem him get a podium. And record or not, getting that many starts in such a competitive sport must mean heā€™s doing something right.

With one seat locked up, Audi has been pushing to get Sainz in the other. While Carlos seems like the most likely candidate barring any Max Merc Madness, Ocon appears to be their second choice at the moment. While itā€™s certainly a gamble, if Iā€™m either of them Iā€™m signing on the dotted line and taking a chance on seeing what Audi can do in 2026.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [110]: Still confident in the technical team without Newey, saying ā€œWhen he started at Red Bull, he was incredibly important for the success that they hadā€¦but his role has evolvedā€¦I also really trust that the technical team we have outside of Adrian is very, very strong.ā€
šŸ„ˆ Sergio Perez [85]: ā€œFully committedā€ to F1 even if itā€™s not with RBR next year. Heā€™s reportedly looking to stay with the team and wants a 3-year contract - but no official offer has been made yet.
šŸ„‰ Charles Leclerc [76]: Leclercā€™s helmet for the weekend matching the bluederia theme
4ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [69]: His manager states ā€œweā€™re still playing the gameā€ in regards to his F1 future, adding, ā€œI think we will see some movement in the upcoming weeks. But, for the moment, the juggling continues.ā€ Cā€™mon movement! Eager to see how this all shakes out.
5ļøāƒ£ Lando Norris [58]: Doing his best mummy impression after taking some glass to the face while partying a little too hard in Amsterdam. He looked better with only a band-aid on at the Miami Heat game earlier this week. Remember the old racing proverb, ā€œHe who cuts open his face shall still be able to race.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [38]: Wins the helmet award for this weekend. ā€œFull Miami vibes.ā€ This one is a beaut. But Iā€™m a sucker for neon.
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell [33]: Welcomes the team trying to sign Max as his teammate, ā€œI made it clear that Iā€™d welcome anybody,ā€ said Russell. ā€œI think having a chance to to sign someone like Max? Every team would would go for it. And as I said before, Iā€™d love to have that opportunity going against Max.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [31]: Feels heā€™s been singled out harshly in the past few races for penalties, and says the teamā€™s right to review was to ā€œmake sure everything is okay and nothing else is happening.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [19]: Hereā€™s a birdā€™s eye view of Lewis demoing the W13 on 5th ave in Manhattan on Tuesday. I wish I knew about this in advanceā€¦ I would have played hooky from work and checked it out.
šŸ”Ÿ Lance Stroll [9]: Alonso says that Lanceā€™s feedback is crucial to the team, with the Canadian being ā€œa lot more sensitive to thingsā€ regarding the car than he is.
11. Yuki Tsunoda [7]: Lots of drivers took some time to unwind between races, including Yuki who apparently likes to grill indoors. I donā€™t see a range hood Yuki. Are the windows open at least? Hope your smoke detector isnā€™t has sensitive as mine. In other news, Honda vowed to continue to support him even as their engine partnership moves from Red Bull to Aston Martin.
12. Oliver Bearman [6]: With Hulkenberg officially moving on from Haas, Ollie moves a step closer as the likely candidate to replace him
13. Nico Hulkenberg [4]: Haas TP Komatsu on his new deal: "I'd like to extend my thanks to Nico for his contributions to the teamā€¦ he's been a great team player. His experience and feedback have proved invaluableā€¦ a fact that's clearly evident [in his] performances in the VF-24 this season.ā€ He also added, ā€œHULK has SMASHED all expectationsā€ šŸ„
14. Kevin Magnussen [1]: Was impressed with Bearmanā€™s debut and would welcome him as a teammate, ā€œI think, you know, looking at him as a young guy, you know, racing, I can relate to where he is in his career and in his life.ā€
15. Alex Albon [0]: Says Miami is the most optimistic heā€™s been so far this season, and comparing last yearā€™s race to this year says ā€œthe areas where we really focused on from the FW45 to the FW46, there are a lot of the corners that this track has. So Iā€™m excited to see. Hopefully the progress is strong.ā€
16. Esteban Ocon [0]: Rumor is the gridā€™s tallest driver is on the short list for Audi if Sainz wonā€™t sign with the team.
17. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Hope to enjoy a ā€œlong careerā€ in F1, as Hulk signing means that either he or Bottas is guaranteed to be off the team next year. Hate to say it, but the chances of a seat next year are looking slim.
18. Daniel Ricciardo [0]: Christian Horner says Danny must display ā€œhead-turning formā€ if he wants to make it up to the varsity squad. ā€œItā€™s pretty much in Danielā€™s hands.ā€
19. Pierre Gasly [0]: As the team continues to try to dig out of a hole this season, he says ā€œThe thing I care the most at the moment for me is to be in a competitive car, and I want that competitive car with Alpine as thatā€™s what I signed up for two years ago.ā€
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: An unexpected change between China and Miami as Bottas gets a new race engineer
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: Feature in The Athletic on his tumultuous start to the season ahead of his home race. On recharging before this weekend, ā€œIā€™d be lying if I said the first five races and all the travel and everything didnā€™t take a toll on me. We all feel it; weā€™re fatigued or weā€™re tired. So, to have this little break offā€¦was definitely really needed. Time heals.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [195]: Itā€™s official: Adrian Newey will be out of RBR come Q1 of 2025. And since heā€™s currently only working on the teamā€™s hypercar and not F1 car, his gardening leave starts immediately - meaning heā€™ll be free to join another team right after heā€™s done with RBR.
šŸ„ˆFerrari [151]: Speaking of another team for Neweyā€¦ Fred Vasseur has reportedly met with the elite car designer in London this week, and appears to be the odds-on favorite to land his services. Better strategy, Hamilton, now potentially Newey? Freddy V about to be crowned King of Italy by the Tifosi.
šŸ„‰McLaren [96]: Both drivers are set to receive the first upgrade package of the season. The details havenā€™t been released, but itā€™s aim is to improve tire degradation. The package isnā€™t as big as the one that gave them the huge boost last year, with TP Stella adding ā€œwe need more than one round of upgrades in terms of helping the behavior of the tires.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [52]: Rumor is the team will offer Max a walloping 150M euro per year deal along with ambassadorship, looking to capitalize on RBR turmoil. Yowza. And this is why so many drivers live in Monaco.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [40]: Launched a right to review of the penalty Alonso received in the Shanghai Sprint, which left him with 3 penalty points. This is basically just an appeal in which the team has to present ā€œnew evidenceā€ they think will overturn the decision.
6ļøāƒ£ RB [7]: TP Mekies says the team is working on two concurrent ā€œstreamsā€ to optimize performance, but the path wonā€™t be linear. The two streams being nailing race weekends and building stronger foundations for the company. So, the sport side and the business side.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [5]: The ghost of Guenther Steiner is still haunting Haas: The former TP has launched a legal complaint against his former team over money he says he is owed and using his likeness for promotional material without compensation. The suit even cites the bump Haas received from his popularity on Drive to Survive. Ugh this isā€¦ not a great look for Guenther. Not clear how much money he is seeking but it just feels a bit unscrupulous. Yes I used a thesaurus for that word.
8ļøāƒ£ Williams [0]: Theyā€™ve been nailing the social media game ahead of Loganā€™s home race. I really wanna get me one of them ice cream shirts. Maybe theyā€™ll cut the price after this weekend?
9ļøāƒ£ Alpine [0]: This weekend Gasly will be getting the floor upgrade that Ocon got in Shanghai. Along with a 3.5kg (~7.7lbs) weight reduction, the changes seek to nail the balance between air flowing to the underside of the floor and outward to the floor edges.
šŸ”Ÿ Kick Sauber [0]: Andreas Seidl gives update on Audiā€™s preparations ahead of 2026 debut after Hulkenberg signing, saying ā€œAs of today, the team and infrastructure are largely in placeā€¦Over the past few months, we've worked with the team to identify where we fall short compared to the top Formula 1 teams.ā€ Pit stops, for one. Sorry. Theyā€™ve been improving!

Tech Talk

  • A quick 1 min video from The Race demonstrates how different the 2026 cars will be: 50/50 internal combustion/electric power unit, less drag (and therefore a smaller DRS effect), active aerodynamics (think reducing wing levels on straights), and smaller, lighter cars overall.

  • Jump start rules have been clarified after Landoā€™s eagerness in Jeddah earlier this year. Are they going to clarify the rules for tattling on drivers who jump start as well? Looking at you Georgeā€¦

  • Not quite tech but car related: Two new liverys have been revealed for Miami. We got Bluederia Ferrari vs RB Chameleon šŸ”½

Wish the Ferrari was fully Blue. Chameleon is niiiice. šŸ“ø @ScuderiaFerrari on X and formula1.com

Off the Grid

  • Netflix has revealed a first look at ā€œSENNAā€, a miniseries about the life of the 3x champ, coming later this year. Heck yea. Add it to the growing list of race media I canā€™t seem to find the time to consume.

  • Itā€™s not only the Drive to Survive effect: Content creators and social media have had an even bigger impact for fans wanting to keep up with everything F1

  • Check out this realistic Monaco miniature F1 model that can autonomously run an F1 race. This is sweet. Apparently it took 11 years and 150K working hours. I believe it.

Quiz Answer

C. P9. Believe it or not heā€™s won from P14 also - At Spa in 2022.

Enjoy the weekend, hereā€™s to hoping someone steals the top podium spot from Max in at least one of the two races. Also, these are always funā€¦ is history about to repeat itself? šŸ”½
