PLP Season 2 Edition 26
Race Weekend
Everyone look around, look around. How lucky we are to be alive right now. Itās the heart of the F1 season, 4 races in the next 5 weekends, the title fight more alive than ever. Itās also hotter than the 2023 Qatar GP on the East Coast, which is great if youāre secretly some sort of desert lizard.
Schedule for this weekend in EST:
FP1: Friday, June 28th @ 6:30am
Sprint Quali: Friday, June 28th @ 10:30am
Sprint: Saturday, June 29th @ 6:00am
GP Quali: Saturday, June 29th @ 10:00am
Grand Prix: Sunday, June 30th @ 9:00am
Quick Quiz !
Lando Norris moved into P2 in the standings after Spain. Who was the last McLaren Driver to reach P2 in the standings? |
Spanish GP Recap
š„ VER - š„ NOR - š„ HAM
Fastest Lap: NOR
DNF: None
DoTD: NOR
Lando nearly captured a modified grand slam (if you replace leading every lap with earning Driver of the Day honors - which he tends to do lately)ā¦ he just failed to actually win the race. Starting from pole and trying to cover off Max after a poor start, there was enough space for Russell to take advantage of a slip stream and shoot into the lead on the first turn in one of the best opening moves weāve seen in some time. Max would steal P1 just a couple laps later, and ultimately hang on for the win. With Lando caught up in traffic early, his offset pit strategy vs Max wasnāt quite enough to close the gap - though for a bit it did look like heād make another Imola like charge and get a chance to win. In the end, he would come up just two seconds short. If he nails the start thereā¦ he wins the race. McLaren was once again the fastest car, but Max drove perfectly to take another close win. Give this guy DoTD for once!
Mercedes showed strength again, with Hamilton taking his first podium of 2024 and George taking P4, after getting passed by his teammate on softs while he was on an offset tire strategy, running hards in the last stint. Ferrari had higher expectations, and got caught up in intrateam fighting after the race when Leclerc and Sainz made contact early (more on that below). Alpine had their best race of the year and finished with double points, which was unthinkable even a couple weeks ago. Aston had a weekend to forget, failing to score at all.
3 of the last 4 races have seen Verstappen edge Norris by an average of two seconds. Itās clear that Red Bull has lost their car advantage to McLaren, but Max continues to prove why heās the best. Itās easy to point to the machine when a car is dominant, but the past month has really shown that he just operates on another level. That said, expect Lando to get a few more Wās this yearā¦ with Merc and Ferrari still sprinkled in the mix. Iād basically guarantee that Red Bull doesnāt win the Constructorsā at the rate Checo is going - but I still expect Max to take home the WDC. Just might closer than we would have thought at the beginning of the yearā¦
Austrian GP Preview
I see an arm thatās done itās fair share of curls giving a salute. Or one of those classic magnets you only see in cartoons. šø formula1.com
This weekend weāve got the hump day of our triple header and our third Sprint weekend of the season in the aptly named Red Bull Ring, where a sea of orange shirts and smoke from the Orange Army will overtake the Austrian circuit. (Orange to support Max, aka the Flying Dutchman, and smoke from the flairs they like to set off in the stands. Looks cool, but canāt be safe for driving visibility, right? Also if you were also wondering āwhy orange?ā like I was: According the the Google AI Overview, orange is prominent in Dutch culture because of the Dutch royal family, House of Orange-Nassau. The dynasty dates back to 1544 with William of Orange. Thank you intelligent robot! Anyway..)
Itās Red Bullās home race, and a track where most of the records you can think of are held by itās best driver. The track is known for itās high speeds and elevation changes, with a mix of sharp and fast corners. Power is required in the first half as you climb uphill, while the second half of the track is a real downhill thrill ā¢ļø. Itās one of the shortest tracks on the calendar at just 4.3km (2.7mi) but is also one of the fastest, with an average speed of 230km/h (143mph) over 77 laps. Plus, itās got this guy watching over the action:
Pretty cool. Almost cool enough to make me a Red Bull fan for the weekend. Almost.
For this yearās GP, gravel traps have been added in the third sector to prevent last yearās track-limits-violations-bonanza, which saw race control review more than 1200 instances the infraction. In reality, about 1% of those were penalized - but it became clear than nearly every driver could have been dinged on many of their laps. If you watched last year, youāll also remember this as the race where McLaren really started to show what was coming after an abysmal start to 2023, with Lando taking P4 on the back of major upgrades. Look for Lando to once again challenge for the win here. Will be keen to see if Mercedes can maintain their good form as of late, and if Ferrari can get off the schneid and get back into contention.
Silly Season Update
The rumors continue to fly, while some new signings have become official this week. Hereās a quick roundup of F1ās version of musical chairs:
In a minor surprise, Pierre Gasly re-signed a multi-year deal with Alpine after rumors of him looking elsewhere (but maybe Ocon not returning was enough for him). Posted by Pierre on X: āFull gas!ā
In the least surprising move of maybe all time, Lance Stroll has been extended at Aston Martin.
Carlos Sainz has now been mentioned in the same breath as Alpine, while Williams remains a top option with Sauber/Audi seemingly less likely at this point. Decision to come any day nowā¦
Logan Sargeant is rumored to have already signed for an IndyCar seat in 2025, but there has been no official announcement.
Helmut Marko says itās likely weāll see Liam Lawson in Daniel Ricciardoās seat sooner rather than later.
Drivers without a seat: Ocon, Ricciardo, Sainz, Magnussen, Sargeant, Bottas, Zhou
Seven seats left: Merc, Williams, VCARB, Haas x2, Sauber, Alpine.
Five extra names: Bearman, Antonelli, Lawson, Doohan, Schumacher linked to various seats. Silly!
Down the Grid
š„Max Verstappen [219]: Summed up the current state of the team (on his side of the garage) perfectly: āWeāre not that fastest, but we donāt make mistakes.ā I keep waiting for it, but heās right. Theyāll still be the favorite if they continue to operate like this.
š„ Lando Norris š [150]: Ruing his ātardy startā, saying he āshould have wonā after a brilliant quali lap to take pole. āThe car was incredible today, I think we were for sure the quickest, I just lost it in the beginning.ā Ifs-buts-candies-nuts. But heās definitely right.. this race was his for the taking.
š„Charles Leclerc š [148]: On the early contact with his teammate in Barcelona: āIt wasnāt the moment to fightā¦We had agreed to save tiresā¦He damaged my front wing. I guess he wanted to impress at his home race considering the moment in his career.ā Oofā¦ now for Carlosā side of the story ā¬ļø
4ļøā£ Carlos Sainz [116]: āCharles wasnāt happy with me? We had a new soft and we had to attackā¦ I couldnāt stay behind him all my lifeā¦I donāt know what heās complaining about this time.ā Oh boy. Ferrari must resist falling into their old habit of getting in their own way, quite literally here.
5ļøā£ Sergio Perez [111]: Horner urges his #2 to find the āfantasticā form he showed early this year. āWe need Checo in the mix.ā Unclear if he wants him to drive better or get back to mixing tracks on the decks as the teamās resident DJā¦
6ļøā£ Oscar Piastri [87]: Scratching his head at loss of race pace, saying āthe magnitude of the struggle has been bigger than what makes sense at the moment.ā
7ļøā£ George Russell [81]: Knew he could brake deep with a headwind into turn 1, saying of his brilliant move: āI channeled my inner Alonso!ā This was a sick move by āol Georgie. Check out the full race highlights linked above to watch if you missed it.
8ļøā£ Lewis Hamilton [70]: Was caught laying on the couch before the post race interview, looking tired after the ābest weekend Iāve had all season.ā You wonāt hear him admit it though, saying āI feel great, I feel fantastic, Iāve got plenty of energyā after his first podium of the year.
9ļøā£ Fernando Alonso [41]: Praises a āvery dedicatedā and ācommittedā teammate Stroll after signing his new deal. āAfter Barcelona we exchanged quite a big text and this kind of relationship that I donāt remember to have with other teammates.ā āØ
š Yuki Tsunoda [19]: Felt there was a āclear issueā with the car in Spain that caused ātoo much slidingā and a lack of downforce. The team has traced the problem back to a damaged floor mounting bracket. On this weekendās race: āI like the food, especially the Schnitzel!ā Stay gold, Pony Boy.
11. Lance Stroll [17]: Was lucky to escape penalty after seemingly bumping Hamilton on purpose in practice, admitting his displeasure at getting impeded.
12. Daniel Ricciardo [9]: Opinion piece from Autosport on how his future hangs in the balance as the only Red Bull driver without a contract for next season. āFrom a technical side and feedback.. I feel like I'm probably doing more than I ever have. So maybe just with age, I'm enjoying this process more."
13. Oliver Bearman [6]: Remains P13 in F1 - but is only P17 in F2.
14. Nico Hulkenberg [6]: Thoughts on the Red Bull Ring: āItās a short track that packs in a lot of funā¦the length of the circuit means it bunches us all up over qualifying, which is a challenge.ā
15. Pierre Gasly [5]: On his new contract: āLot of work ahead of us, but Iām more motivated than ever to deliver my absolute best to the team.ā
16. Esteban Ocon š [3]: On whatās coming for his future: āDiscussions are going well, at the moment, Iām confident with the future and hopefully it will be sorted soon and announced.ā
17. Alex Albon š [2]: Wasnāt happy with his engineer after his car lurched unexpectedly and the team didnāt have answers. They later found out a strong gust of wind was responsible. Wind always plays a bigger role than you might think.
18. Kevin Magnussen [1]: On 10 years of running in the midfield: āSometimes I question whether itās worth it.ā
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Felt he made a ābig stepā after a solid drive to P13, saying he could āput the car where I wanted and control it as I used to.ā He also said this week he could be open to a reserve driver role if there was a chance to become full time.
20. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Pushes back his deadline for wanting to have a seat locked up for next year as everybody waits on Carlos.
21. Logan Sargeant [0]: It may not be all bad - if the move to IndyCar is true, he could join the likes of former F1 drivers Marcus Ericsson, Alexander Rossi, Romain Grosjean, and Takuma Sato in finding new challenges and successes in the āotherā open wheel racing series.
Constructorās Corner
š„Red Bull [330]: In more Helmut Marko quote news, he said that Max has the ability to drive ānearly faultlesslyā, something his āmain rivalā Lando Norris ācanāt do yet.ā Heās not wrong though. But if I was a grid reporter Iād just go straight to this guy every week.
š„Ferrari [270]: Looking to regain the designation as biggest threat to Red Bull after being overtaken in competitiveness by McLaren as of late. Leclerc admitted the Barcelona performance was ānot as expectedā as they experienced some bouncing with the new upgrades, while Vasseur thinks big swings are still possible depending on the track.
š„McLaren [237]: TP Stella says the MCL38 is now āvery, very closeā to the RB20, noting the huge gains the team has made in one yearās time. Max himself admitted that Papaya upgrades have found more lap time for their car than Red Bull has.
4ļøā£ Mercedes [151]: Hamilton says the current car is operating āat its maxā and only likes a particular set-up. Theyāll need another upgrade package to deliver performance beyond current capabilities. āWe're slowly getting closer. But weāre always fine-tuning it with subtle changes.ā To beat the Max you need to operate at the max.
5ļøā£ Aston Martin [58]: TP Krack acknowledged the poor performance in āa race to forget at a track which exposed our known weaknessā and added āwe understand the areas to remedy but we must be patient as they wonāt come overnightā. Could be a tough stretch in the next few weeks for the green machine.
6ļøā£ VCARB [28]: Sorry for the switch again. Weāre going from RB ā”ļø VCARB. Theyāre using it in the official team graphics during the race, and letās be honest itās way less confusing. Latest rumor (from Marko again, of course) is that Liam Lawson has a real shot at replacing Ricciardo this year. Itās supposed to be a feeder team for Red Bull, after all. But who wouldnāt be sad to see Danny go..
7ļøā£ Alpine š [8]: Mick Schumacher will run a test in the 2022 spec car for the team this weekend, and is believed to be in contention for a seat next season. Other contenders to replace Ocon are reserve driver Jack Doohan, and 10-time race winner Valtteri Bottas.
8ļøā£ Haas š [7]: Hoping to return to the points for the first time since Miami after getting jumped by Alpine last weekend. Race engineer Mark Slade notes this weekendās track demands provide a challenge in nailing the set up. āWeāve had some issues with medium-speed cornersā¦but in low-speed corners, weāve generally been very good, and we think weāve taken a step forward in high-speed corners recently.ā
9ļøā£ Williams [2]: Everything you need to know about their recent technical hiring spree, bringing in over two dozen people to drive the teamās technical transformation.
š Kick Sauber [0]: Insists that Audiās focus on 2026 is not behind the teamās struggles this season.
Tech Talk
A look into the future: A 10 spot grid penalty is all but guaranteed for Verstappen as heās already used his power unit allotment of four not even halfway through the season. In 2023, starting 11th would have been no problem. Now? Donāt think he wins from there..
Critical set-up: Partially responsible for Norrisā pole last weekend: Red Bull ran a smaller rear wing set-up in practice, and with hot track temperatures they were losing time in the slow corners. They opted for an increased drag rear wing set-up in qualifying that saw their straight-line speed advantage of McLaren tighten, and with cooler track temps at the time McLaren also picked up time in the fast corners.
Deep Dive: Half hour in depth review of the most interesting tech upgrades in 2024 so far.
Off the Grid
Must watch: This Red Bull nearly sets a record lap time at this weekendās venue.. which would be good for a car, except this is a PLANE. Really cool perspective. But definitely some track limits violations in there..
More Email Drama: Last week an anonymous email alleged Mercedes was intentionally sabotaging Hamilton. Cue Hamilton podium directly after. Toto calls police, police determine no criminal acts were involved, Toto vows to track down the perpetrator and deal with the problem himself. Ok that last part may not be true. You can imagine though, right?
Like son, unlike father: Jos Verstappen had a big crash out of the Ypes Rally in Belgium last weekend. Thankfully no one was hurt. Physically, at least..
Alonsoās own Aston: The manufacturer announced it will produce an āextremeā street-legal version of its Valour sportscar called the āValiantā, which was commissioned by Fernando himself. Thereās only 38 being made, and they start at $2.5M. Soā¦ good luck trying to get one.
Not a color Iād normally go with.. still purty though. šø Motortrend
