Race Weekend

Exciting news: Iā€™ll be up in Boston this weekend, and plan on checking out the F1 Arcade. If anyone is in the area, look for the guy spinning into the wall on the simulator and not knowing how to back up. Theyā€™re actually having a watch party for the Singapore GP as well, but I know myself well enough to know that I ainā€™t making that at 8am. I plan on watching in a comfy robe on my hotel room bed with copious amounts of coffee.

If youā€™d like support the Pulse (and my caffeine habit) you can do so here. As always, thanks for reading.

This weekendā€™s schedule in EDT:

  • FP1: Friday, Sep 20th @ 5:30am

  • FP2: Friday, Sep 20th @ 9:00am

  • FP3: Saturday, Sep 21st @ 5:30am

  • Quali: Saturday, Sep 21st @ 9:00am

  • Grand Prix: Sunday, Sep 22nd @ 8:00am

Quick Question!

Who ya got for the win under the lights in Singapore?

Last week we asked how Aston would fair in the near future with the addition of Adrian Newey. A split result with about half believing theyā€™ll be strong in 2026. Also good to see some Lance podium believers out there:

Azerbaijan GP Recap

šŸ„‡ PIA - šŸ„ˆ LEC - šŸ„‰ RUS

DNF: TSU - STR - SAI - PER

Fastest Lap: NOR

DoTD: PIA

The ā€œStreet Fightersā€ moniker for this race truly lived up to itā€™s name last weekend - this race was an all out brawl and did not disappoint. Easily a top 3 race this season, maybe even the best one so farā€¦ and I donā€™t even think thatā€™s recency bias. Do yourself a favor and catch a full replay of this oneā€¦ or at least the highlights below.

The highlight was a 30 lap long fight for first between Piastri and Leclerc, with Perez and Sainz joining in the battle for the top spot towards the end of the race (until the penultimate lap that is). Leclerc led early, but after poor in and out laps Piastri crept right up to his tail and put in another stellar move for the second race in a row, diving down the inside on turn 1 on lap 19. From there Leclerc had some looks, keeping within DRS distance but wasnā€™t ever able to get past the leading Papaya. Oscar called it the ā€œmost stressful afternoon of my life.ā€

With a few laps remaining, Leclercā€™s rear tires were completely gone and he started dropping away from the leader. But the action wasnā€™t over - Perez briefly moved up to P2, but the Ferrariā€™s fought back and both got by the Red Bull - Only for Sainz and Perez to drift into each other on the straight and collide at high speed, sending both into the wall. A shame for Checo who was finally having a good race. Cut to George saying ā€œDonā€™t mind if I do gentsā€ as he lucks into a podium, reminiscent of his win in Austria. But hey you gotta put yourself in position to get lucky, right? He did get by Max on lap 34.

With all the talk of Papaya rules last week, it was actually Lando who helped Oscar at one point - holding up Perez on lap 15 to allow his teammate to hold on to second place at the time. On his second win that wasnā€™t tainted by team order like his first, Oscar said this one ā€œfelt much better.ā€ Norrisā€™ unlucky yellow flag in quali saw him start way down the order - but he kept the WDC hope alive by passing Max on track and finishing P4.

Across the rest of the grid Yuki had another DNF after contact with Stroll, Hamilton fought the rookies (both drove very well) after a pit lane start, and Max was struggling all day - and it doesnā€™t seem like this weekend will be much better for team energy drink. Both Red Bull and Williams took 10 points home from the race - but only one of them was happy about it.

Oscar was his typical calm and cool self on the radio after his win. He also had a hilarious quip in the cooldown room watching the Perez-Sainz collision, remembering a free practice tiff they had a day earlier: ā€œThey havenā€™t been great friends this weekendā€¦ I guess Perez has finished the job.ā€ šŸ˜†

Singapore GP Preview

Weā€™re in for another good one here as we head under the lights in Singapore, which always creates some of the best scenes in F1 (sparks flying from the back down a long straight at night, anyone? Canā€™t beat that) as drivers twist through the colorful city landscape.

Marina Bay is a physically demanding track for the drivers due to the high humidity and bumpy surface, and has a lower average speed than a typical street circuit due to quite a few low speed corners. Thereā€™s been some track updates recently that have brought down the lap time (such as an added DRS zone between turns 14 and 16, and two chicanes in sector 3 removed last year), but the race typically gets close to the two hour time limit - especially if thereā€™s a safety car.

Traction, braking, and therefore high downforce are critical at this draining track. Jolyon Palmer: ā€œMarina Bay is a long, complex circuit, and draining as well ā€“ a little bit like Monaco. Itā€™s all about the low-speed and having decent turn-in without losing the rear or suffering snaps of oversteer. Towards the end of the lap youā€™re starting to worry about your rear tires overheating, particularly if youā€™ve not been kind to them earlier on. Monaco might be the only venue with a slower average speed, but Singapore can be an absolute slog.ā€

What to Watch For:

  • Round 3: Will we see another sensational Ferrari vs. McLaren battle for the win? I hope so. Theyā€™ve been exhilarating.

  • WDC Lead: Can Max continue to put up enough points to hold off Norrisā€™ (and maybe Leclercā€™s? Piastriā€™s?!) charge? Singapore is usually tough for the defending champs, but Perez is a known street performer - if he can hang on to the end this time.

  • Liveries: Mercedes will don emerald green for their title sponsor Petronas (what do you think Lewis Hamiltonā€™s Patronus Charm would be? Iā€™m guessing a goat), VCARB will rock the ā€˜ol Canadian tuxedo with a denim wrap (and unlike your second cousin at the family reunion, this actually looks decent), McLaren will basically just add more white (but include names of some of their legendary drivers in the cockpit), and Red Bull will unveil - absolutely nothing. The Pink Cows scrapped a special fan-designed livery for the upcoming races because it was found to add unnecessary weight to the car. Hard to imagine this being a problem even earlier this year. Red Bull out there scrapping for every .001s right now.

  • Midfield Fight: Williams stepped up their game last weekend - can they catch up to Haas and VCARB? With another performance like last week - definitely yes.

Formula 1 šŸ¤ LEGO

If you want to be able to build your own F1 car but donā€™t have millions of dollars lying around, then 2025 will be your year. F1 and LEGO have announced a partnership that will bring new products featuring your favorite teams, along with ā€œengaging content for fans and families across LEGO Group digital platforms and a strong presence at Formula 1 events, with fun fan zone activations throughout the season.ā€ Not exactly sure what that means, but LEGO is legit, so could be cool.

This is big for appeal to young fans (though Iā€™d argue older ones will be sure to get in on the fun as well) as about 4 million kids between 8-12 now follow the sport in the U.S. and Europe, and with about half of F1ā€™s TikTok followers and 40% of its Instagram followers falling under 25 years old.

CMO of F1 Emily Prazer: ā€œThrough this partnership, fans will be able to recreate and reimagine the world of Formula 1, brick by brick, delving deeper into the intricacies of the mechanics and technology behind the sport through play.ā€ Heck yea. Love intricacies. One of the most fascinating ascpects of the sport.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [313]: The team revealed their development direction started going wrong all the way back in Barcelona in 2023, but Max was so good that it hid a lot of the problems. If you remember, thatā€™s around the time Checoā€™s performance went way down hill. Pretty incredible since the RB19 is considered one of the most dominant cars ever.
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [254]: Clip of Lando playing the team game and holding up Perez, allowing Piastri to maintain track position ahead of the Red Bull after his pit stop. The ā€˜ol Reverse Papaya Rules.
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [235]: Wants the team to review why time was lost during the pit process, which allowed Piastri to close the gap he had built early. But weā€™ve got to look into how the gap went from six seconds to one and a half, because that is definitely not what we expected. Even on a track where undercuts are big, itā€™s still four seconds and a half or four seconds ā€“ a lot of lap time loss, which I donā€™t exactly know why and where weā€™ve lost this lap time.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [222]: His manager, former driver and fellow Aussie Mark Webber called his Baku performance ā€œthe best drive Iā€™ve ever seen him pull offā€¦Under a lot of pressure, very defensive decisive in the move itself and up against a world class driver ā€“ Charles around here is absolutely magical so to beat him around here is a pretty big deal.ā€ Race of the year, drive of the yearā€¦ what a performance.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [184]: On the collision with Checo: ā€œWe normally do a slight drift towards the left into the long straight, which I did like every other lap, and suddenly for some reason I donā€™t understand, Checo and I collided, which is unfortunate and also very disappointingā€¦ Itā€™s racing, everything happens super fast.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [166]: Was very complimentary to both Colapinto and Bearman on the battles they had on track in Baku, saying racing with the next generation was ā€œreally cool.ā€ The two rookies were thrilled with Lewisā€™ praise and both thanked him for his words in the comments of his Instagram post. Instagram comments are the highest form of respect in Gen Z culture.
7ļøāƒ£ George Russell šŸ“ˆ [143]: Says the team ā€œhas to be realisticā€ as he lucked into another podium (and last time a win in Austria) as the result of a late crash ahead of him. He noted the positives: ā€œon the hard tire I think we were one of the quickest out there and that was great. Got past Max, so an added bonus to stand on the podium.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez šŸ“‰ [143]: Checoā€™s side of the story: ā€œItā€™s very unfortunate. It all happened so quickly. I think Carlos was trying to follow the tow from Charles as he went to the inside and that really made things really hard.ā€ If you look at the replay it was a racing inchident, but if I had to pick Iā€™m giving slight blame to Perez. He was behind Sainz on the straight and had plenty of room to his left.
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [58]: P6 in Baku matches his best finish since Canada, 8 races ago. ā€œNormally only ninth and 10th are available to the midfield, but with the action in front of us, sixth was available so opportunistic Sunday for us.ā€
šŸ”ŸLance Stroll [24]: On his ā€œfrustratingā€ race that was pretty much cooked on lap 1: ā€œMy race was pretty much over on the first lap when Tsunoda and I made contact. I dived down the inside ā€“ I'm not sure if he saw me or not ā€“ but he closed the door and I had to pit with a puncture.ā€
11. Nico Hulkenberg [22]: Finished P11 for the seventh time this season, breaking the record for the amount of times a driver has finished one place outside the points. And also P11 in the standings? Thatā€™s consistency right there.
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Has a different opinion than Lance on their first lap contact: ā€œā€œIn terms of what happened on track, it felt like an unnecessary move from him [Stroll]. Sending it in like that, with a nothing-to-lose approach. Iā€™m not sure what he had to gain, but I wasnā€™t going to make it easy for him.ā€
13. Alex Albon šŸ“ˆ [12]: Says the teamā€™s performance was ā€œa genuine surpriseā€ and that their new update package was working. He was even running in P3 briefly in the first stint before pitting late. ā€œIt was actually unexpected for us to be in that kind of awkward position where we were in the mix with the leaders,ā€¦Obviously we didnā€™t pit yet but we were losing a lot of race time because of all the fighting that was going on around me.ā€
14. Daniel Ricciardo šŸ“‰ [12]: Says graining was a challenge, which caused him to lose a lot of time: ā€œIā€™ve never experienced graining like that, the swing of lap time was up to four seconds. We need to understand why we had more graining for longer.ā€
15. Pierre Gasly šŸ“‰ [8]: Has mixed feelings on how his race played out: ā€œOn one side, I think it was the best race of the year on my side driving-wise, I was at the absolute limit every single lap every single cornerā€¦On the other side, we were dead slow the entire race and it was painful to see the others passing by ā€“ I just had no pace.ā€ He knew Monza and Baku would be tough and looks to bounce back this weekend in Singapore, where he was P6 last year.
16. Ollie Bearman šŸ“‰ [7]: After a P10 finish, he becomes the first driver in F1 history to score points in his first two races for two different teams. Although he says the point was not ā€œfully deservedā€ due to the crash ahead of him - he did out qualify and finish ahead of teammate Hulkenberg which was impressive.
17. Kevin Magnussen šŸ“‰ [6]: On sitting out last week: "Itā€™s strange seeing your car run around and watching it on televisionā€¦Baku is a really cool track so it was a shame it had to be that one, but this is a cool track as well and one that I think we should be able to do well at.ā€
18. Esteban Ocon [5]: Had a rough weekend after needing to change power unit components and had to start from the pit lane. ā€œWe will turn the page, thereā€™s nothing good for us this weekend.ā€
19. Franco Colapinto šŸ“ˆ [4]: Thrilled with the teamā€™s double points finish: ā€œIt is very special, a dream come true. It is a long season still and we have many races left together but it is a great start. Very motivating for the next race.ā€
20. Zhou Guanyu šŸ“‰ [0]: Without a seat, doesnā€™t feel like heā€™s done: ā€œI feel like thereā€™s plenty more I can show to the paddock, to Formula 1.ā€
21. Logan Sargeant šŸ“‰ [0]: A congrats post from F1 for Colapinto on scoring points had a picture of his face actually photoshopped onto Loganā€™s body. So heā€™s still kinda in F1? Seems like an NIL violation.
22. Valtteri Bottas [0]: On current issues: ā€œWe are too sensitive on certain factors like ride, with cornering conditions. You can't turn things around overnight, lead times can be months.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡McLaren šŸ“ˆ [476]: And for the first time in 2.5 yearsā€¦ we have a new leader in the Constructorsā€™ Championship. TP Stella on McLaren having that lead for the first time since 2014: ā€œSuch a strong team, such strong drivers ā€“ Iā€™m very proud of them.. [First place is] an important milestone in our journey. However, the team remain clearly focused on the task ahead, and we use this positive moment to redouble our efforts for the coming races.ā€ Now how about first place in drivers? Lando saved his chances with a mega recovery drive, finishing P4 from starting 15th, passing Max along the way to cut the lead. But heā€™s running out of racesā€¦
šŸ„ˆRed Bull šŸ“‰ [456]: Maxā€™s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase has been promoted to Head of Racing. Heā€™ll still remain Maxā€™s engineer, as he also contributes duties that Jonathan Wheatly left behind.
šŸ„‰Ferrari [425]: TP Vassuer says they ā€œhad the pace to win..I think we probably missed out the last lap before the pit stop, the first lap after the pit stop and we missed the race at this stageā€¦Now if we redid the race, do we have to pit one lap before? The lack of long stint before the weekend probably didnā€™t help Charles at this stage.ā€
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [309]: Toto says the team is looking to commit to a new floor specification in Austin.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [82]: Watch this video of their new design genius at work to see how Adrian Newey thinks about racecars.
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: Rumors are heating up that Liam Lawson will secure the second 2025 seat, with an announcement expected after Singapore - possibly even replacing Ricciardo for Austin. Itā€™s the right thing to doā€¦ will miss Danny though šŸ˜„
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [29]: With K-Magā€™s return, heā€™s called on the FIA to trust drivers more rather than handing out penalties.
8ļøāƒ£ Williams šŸ“ˆ [16]: Scored double points for only the second time in the last three seasons. TP Vowles has also said heā€™ll try to find Colapinto a seat in F1, though thatā€™s looking slim for next season at the moment. Heā€™ll likely have to wait a year a la Liam Lawson. As for the team,  theyā€™re upgrades have been working, and Colapinto looks more than capable in the car through only two races. They have a legitimate shot to try to sit on top of the midfield at seasonā€™s end.
9ļøāƒ£ Alpine šŸ“‰ [13]: The CEO of Renault is set to meet with angry factory staff who have protested their decision to switch power units.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: After averaging over 14 seconds per pit stop in the first 3 races, they got that number down to 2.4 seconds (for Baku pit stops only. But hey.. progress). They expect to make the call on their second driver in a ā€œmatter of weeks.ā€

Tech Talk

  • Next Gen Tires: Pirelli recently tested their 2026 boots at a test session in Barcelona. The wheel size will remain the same, but the width and external diameter have been reduced slightly.

  • Bring Those Wings: Ferrari will join McLaren and Mercedes at the flexible front wing party, bringing forward an upgrade to Singapore that was originally planned for Austin.

  • Flap Those Wings: Weā€™ve covered the flexible front wings McLaren and Mercedes (and now Ferrari) have used this year, but the talk after last race was the flexible design of McLarenā€™s rear wing. At high speed, the bottom flexes slightly to produce a mini-DRS effect, even when DRS is not enabled. Low speeds donā€™t trigger the bending, allowing the car to maintain downforce in slower corners. Hereā€™s an animation explainer and an illustration from gpblog.com šŸ”½ F1 is all about pushing the boundaries and finding gray areas in the regulations.. if not explicitly outlawed, it seems like theyā€™ve just found a very clever design.

Gotta love a good loophole exploitation šŸ“ø gpblog.com

Off the Grid

  • NBA Crossover: Pro basketball player Joel Embiid has seen enough, proclaiming Oscar Piastri a ā€œFuture World Championā€ via tweet after his impressive win. If Embiid himself wants to hold the same title one day, heā€™ll have to get his flopping under control.

  • F2 Crash: The feeder series also saw some fireworks in Azerbaijan, albeit for different reasons. Everyone was OK following the first lap mayhem.

  • Crazy Fan: A Williams mechanic was luck to not be hit by Albon when he was released too early during Quali last weekend - with a cooling fan still stuck in his airbox.

Quick Question (My Answer)

Iā€™m rolling with Charles. Remember Sainz broke the Red Bull streak here last year, in what is typically a tough circuit Max & Co. This season has been unpredictable though, so weā€™ll see what happens..

Enjoy the race this weekend. And remember, always put yourself in a position to get lucky. Be like George šŸ”½

You know Oscar and Charles were thinking itā€¦ šŸ“ø @f1trollofficial on X
