PLP Season 2 Edition 32

Anyone watching the Olympics while F1 is on break? Canā€™t say I was hyped for it, but it is super easy to get sucked in once you catch some of the events. Plus the theme song is an all time banger. Itā€™s popped into my head every couple months ever since Atlanta 1996 and has served as the melody for many a made up song.

Itā€™s nice when your fellow countrymen are all rooting for the same team, and watching the USA dominate never gets old for this Yank. And unlike F1, at least we get to hear The Star-Spangled Banner when one of our own stands on top of the podium. Sorry Logan.

Summer Shutdown Ground Rules

You may be wondering, what even happens (or doesnā€™t happen) during a Summer shutdown? And why the heck donā€™t they have one at my job? According to the 2024 FIA F1 sporting regulations, Article 24.1 states ā€œcompetitors must observe a shutdown period of 14 consecutive days during the months of July and/or August.ā€ During a shutdown:

  • Teams cannot do any work related to the performance of their cars. No design, wind tunnel time, research, or even a single email.

  • These two weeks are still carefully planned though, Mercedes COO Rob Thomas explains. ā€œIt's the only time where you can get to things that you can't normally get to, because we're so flat out all the time.ā€

  • Tasks may include swapping machines, repairing equipment, even painting the office, any task that can be performed by external contractors while the team is offsite.

  • Other business related departments are still allowed to operate, think finance, facilities - non-sporting groups.

Failure to adhere to the rules can result in a penalty from the FIA, though Thomas admits this is a difficult one to enforce and comes down to the integrity of the team. But with personnel moving between teams all the time, itā€™s become somewhat self policing.

"I guess there was always the potential of the FIA could just come in here at any point and see what you're doing, but I don't believe that has ever happened. I have also never heard any rumor of any other team doing activities, so I hope it's one of those things that people stick to because people are so, so ready for a break."

You gotta think some of these guys just canā€™t resist and would break the rules, maybe even accidentally. But overall, I believe him - who wouldnā€™t want time off from such a grueling schedule.

These cannabis gummies keep selling out in 2024

If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone. Thatā€™s why these new cannabis gummies caught our eye.

Mood is an online dispensary that has invented a ā€œjoint within a gummyā€ thatā€™s extremely potent yet federally-legal. Their gummies are formulated to tap into the human bodyā€™s endocannabinoid system.

Although this system was discovered in the 1990ā€™s, farmers and scientists at Mood were among the first to figure out how to tap into it with cannabis gummies. Just 1 of their rapid onset THC gummies can get you feeling right within 5 minutes!

Reader Questions

Weā€™ve got some time during the break in the racing action, so letā€™s catch up on some great reader questions that have come in recently:

  • Is there an update on the Andretti effort? Right when I had an answer ready to go on how there was no real update, on Thursday it was announced F1 owner Liberty Media is now the subject of an official U.S. Justice Department anti-trust probe. Which is good, because things are happening. But bad, because when does the U.S. government ever do anything quickly? Hopefully this helps put them in contention for an entry in 2028.

  • Do drivers have access to tire temperature during the race? While you wonā€™t see drivers tracking tire temperature readouts, they have a very good idea on if they are too hot or too cold based on experience. Driving an F1 car is like wearing a glove, and even minor issues can be felt. They know what if feels like when a tire is in the proper zone. If theyā€™re cold the car will feel slow, if theyā€™re too hot theyā€™ll pick up on the extra degradation. Their engineers will be the ones tracking the data and reinforcing what the driver feels as well.

  • What adjustments do F1 drivers/crew have during a race? All kinds! On the radio, youā€™ll often hear them discuss strategy adjustments, being told to manage tires better, notified of turns where theyā€™re losing time, or asked to institute a ā€œlift and coastā€ technique in breaking zones to save fuel and cool down brakes and tires. A lot of these decisions will evolve over the course of the race as strategy is affected by what your closest competitors are doing. Of course, major set up changes are reserved for free practice sessions and must be locked in before qualifying, and canā€™t happen during the actual race.

  • Do all teams have access to other teams communications live? Yes! A bit surprising, but it adds to strategy and gamesmanship. Itā€™s while youā€™ll here ā€œPlan Aā€, ā€œPlan Eā€, etc. when making strategy calls. Comms are a careful balance between providing information and not giving too much away to rivals. Youā€™ll even here teams use misdirection - calling in fake ā€œbox box boxā€ calls, or drivers exaggerating their tire degradation, or complaining about another driverā€™s dangerous move in order to get their side of the story out quickly when penalties are under consideration.

  • Do teams have a backup jackman standing behind the primary jack operator? While not necessarily a back up person for the front and rear jackman, they do have backup jacks themselves that are held closely on standby. If the car canā€™t get lifted in both the front and the rear, changing a tire becomes quite difficultā€¦

QUICK HITS A.K.A PUSH LAP

A.K.A Iā€™m running out of space elsewhere, and Iā€™m not so sure these need a full section, but they DO need mentioning: Thatā€™s the summer news cycle for ya.

  • Officials from Rwanda will meet with F1 officials next month in an attempt to bring the first Grand Prix to Africa since the South African GP in 1993. I bless the rains..

  • Christian Hornerā€™s accuser of inappropriate conduct has had her appeal denied

  • Two more Sprint Races could be added in the near future, with a ā€œreverse gridā€ order under consideration to spice up the event

  • Helmut Marko said there will be Liam Lawson news next month. As to what type of news? Who knows. He also suggested that Ricciardo was under consideration for the Red Bull seat early in the season but hasnā€™t shown enough to merit a move at this time.

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen [277]: First four race winless spell for the team since before he became a World Champion. With a bunch of other drivers winning however, heā€™s been able to increase his WDC lead (albeit very slightly) in that timespan.
šŸ„ˆLando Norris [199]: Looking to ā€œresetā€ during the summer break. ā€œI've given away a lot of points over the last three, four races just because of stupid stuff, mistakes and bad starts.ā€
šŸ„‰Charles Leclerc [177]: Currently sees the team as fourth fastest and hopes to see post-break upgrades ā€œas soon as possible.ā€ Me too Sharl, me too.
4ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri [167]: Fun Fact: His race engineer Tom Stallard took home a silver medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics representing the UK in rowing.
5ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz [162]: Accepts his Ferrari departure due to the circumstances: ā€œYouā€™re being replaced by the best driver in the history of this sport. If I have to be replaced by someone, itā€™s him [Hamilton].ā€
6ļøāƒ£ Lewis Hamilton [150]: Spotted at the Olympics in Paris supporting his friend Miles Chamley-Watson in the fencing event. Lewis always looks cool, but idk about that bucket hat.
7ļøāƒ£ Sergio Perez [131]: Helmut Marko thinks Red Bull needs to help their struggling #2, which will likely include reverting to an earlier spec of the RB20 he is more comfortable driving.
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell [116]: Eager to step into his new role as team leader with Hamiltonā€™s departure next year: "But I'm so motivated, so excited for the second half of the season, which is ultimately building up towards 2025, and when you look at the competition now, there's no reason why we can't fight."
9ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso [49]: Check out this animation showcasing his 20+ year career that looks like this: Minardi - Renault - McLaren - Renault - Ferrari - McLaren - brief hiatus - Alpine (so technically a 3rd Renault stint) - Aston Martin.
šŸ”ŸLance Stroll [24]: Heā€™s had a better first half of this season competing against Alonso compared to last season - though Fernando still has the edge in all major categories.
11. Nico Hulkenberg [22]: On leaving Haas for Sauber/Audi next season: ā€œMost of the time, it feels bittersweet leaving a team, because you build relationships, you like working with the people in most cases. You change for a reason, there's a strategy behind it and then a reason. That's the way it is." Thatā€™s just the way it isā€¦. things will never be the sameā€¦ šŸŽµ
12. Yuki Tsunoda [22]: Check out his beer can shaped suitcase. I guess it could be soda.. definitely see him as a big Dr. Pepper guy.
13. Daniel Ricciardo[12]: Spoke positively about the teamā€™s strides after arrival of new leadership this year, saying he ā€œwouldnā€™t feel comfortableā€ if they still felt like a ā€œjunior team.ā€
14. Ollie Bearman [6]: Hoping that current F2 teammate Kimi Antonelli joins him on the F1 grid. ā€œOne day I hope to fight for a world championship with him because I think thatā€™s the trajectory that weā€™re both aiming for.ā€ I think youā€™ll see those two names in F1 for quite awhile..
15. Pierre Gasly [6]: Faced ā€œproblems on problemsā€ in last three races before the break. In Belgium, he lost .7s per lap on the straights due to an engine temperature issue. Thatā€™s 31 seconds over the full race distance. Ouch.
16. Kevin Magnussen [5]: Surprised by the teamā€™s P7 in the Constructors at the break when they expected to be last. ā€œLast year, especially in qualifying, we were able to be good, but every time on Sunday, we'd just fall to piecesā€¦ it's actually almost the opposite now ā€“ we look better in the race than we do in qualifying often.ā€
17. Esteban Ocon [5]: From The Race: How Gasly wrestled control of Oconā€™s team, as he stays with the outfit next year and Ocon moves to Haas.
18. Alex Albon [4]: Feels that now is the time for the team to get ā€œexperimentalā€ and ā€œmake mistakesā€ while embracing some bigger risks as they look towards being competitive in the 2026 new regulations.
19. Zhou Guanyu [0]: Spa ā€œsums up our seasonā€, after losing power and breaking leading to a DNF in the race.
20. Logan Sargeant [0]: Without a seat for next season, heā€™s currently unsure of his plans: ā€œIā€™ll try and get a bit of direction. In the end, I think itā€™s important for me to take a bit of time off as well. So Iā€™ll put a bit more weight on [my managerā€™s] shoulders to figure it out. Iā€™m sure conversations will be had. Just what, I donā€™t know yet.ā€
21. Valtteri Bottas [0]: Think the team is ā€œgetting closerā€ to the first points of the season, adding ā€œwe just need to keep bringing upgrades.ā€

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull [408]: Development budget for the RB20 is limited due to $3.6M in damage from Perez so far this season. Thatā€™s a big number halfway through the season. Rounding out the top 3 are Albon with $2.4M and Zhou with $1.4M.
šŸ„ˆMcLaren [366]: TP Stella after his recently signed multi-year contract extension: ā€œWeā€™ve made great strides forward in the past year and a half and we still have a lot more work to do to consistently fight at the front of the grid, which poses an exciting challenge.ā€
šŸ„‰Ferrari [345]: Working hard to introduce upgrades soon after the break (but not working during the break, right?), TP Vasseur thinks Monza-Singapore-Baku will suit the team better than the first race back at Zandvoort.
4ļøāƒ£ Mercedes [266]: Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin reveals the 2025 car will be a ā€œclose cousinā€ of the current W15. Performance gains seen this over the last handful of races have given the team confidence to carry their current approach into next season. A far cry from their commitment to the zero sidepod design of 2022 and 2023.
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin [73]: TP Krack admits pressure is mounting on the team after failed Imola upgrades. ā€œThe perception inside is huge pressure because [the Imola upgrade] doesn't deliver what you were expectedā€¦ and trying to solve this as quick as possible [is now the aim] and in that point, I understand also that there is less patience.ā€
6ļøāƒ£ VCARB [34]: Danny Ric points out the team is still struggling in the high-speed. ā€œI think real, real high speed, we still got to work on a bit. But all the kind of tighter, twistier stuff, we seem to be all right. Just now load and yeah, load is our friend. So maybe I put on some weight over the break and thatā€™ll help.ā€ Also be sure to not get appendicitis.
7ļøāƒ£ Haas [27]: TP Komatsu on what some feel was sandbagging early in the year, saying theyā€™d be slow when theyā€™ve actually surprised this season: ā€œIt's pretty simple. We are 300 people. The next smallest team there is about three times as much. We started [thinking] like, 'we wasted some time [on failed upgrades last year], how are we going to be better, right?' So, if I said, 'loading out of door in Bahrain, we're going to be P8', either I'm stupid or arrogant, one or the other.ā€
8ļøāƒ£ Alpine [11]: Renault factory dubs the teamā€™s switch to Mercedes engines ā€œa stab in the back, a betrayal.ā€ In less contentious news, new TP Oliver Oakes says about the task ahead: ā€œThe team has talented people and excellent resources at its core, and I am confident that we can accomplish a great deal together during the remainder of this season and the longer term.ā€
9ļøāƒ£ Williams [4]: Head of vehicle performance Dave Robson expects the Sainz signing to be ā€œa little dauntingā€ as looks for him to ā€œshake us upā€, noting the driverā€™s reputation for driving everyone around him to get everything they can out of the car.
šŸ”ŸKick Sauber [0]: Bottas and former F3 champ and current #2 in the F2 standings driver Gabriel Bortoleto are reportedly the two finalists for the remaining seat.

Tech Talk

  • Top 3 Tech Updates (so far): F1ā€™s Tech Weekly columnists Mark Hughes and Giorgio Piola list their most significant developments of the first half:

    • 1) McLarenā€™s bodywork introduced in Miami, including a new floor and improved low-speed corners

    • 2) Mercedesā€™ front wing debuted in Monaco to improve the benefits of flexibility at speed

    • 3) ā€œInvisible developmentsā€, meaning the experimentation with front wing flexibility, different flap adjusters, or the now-illegal asymmetrical breaking which was outlawed by the regulation update for the second half of the year.

Ok Mark and Giorgio, that last one was a bit of a cop out. Itā€™s interesting though - did the FIA have to add the rule to stop teams who were already using asymmetrical breaking, or was it to prevent future development in that area? The authors note that ā€œAsymmetric braking would be a very useful tool in addressing the conflict between the low-speed understeer and high-speed oversteer these cars tend to suffer from. Having greater braking force on the outside rear than on the inside would help pivot the car, reducing the understeer.ā€ Hmmmā€¦

  • Aero Restrictions: An interesting thread from @dr_Obbs on X regarding the Aerodynamic Testing Restrictions and how theyā€™ve closed the pack this year. He points to the effect of clean air on the competition this year: While only 6 races have seen a pole sitter win, 12 have been won by the driver who led the most laps (therefore had the most time in clean air). Two exceptions are Miami where Max took damage, and a wet/dry Silverstone that saw Hamilton only have four less clean air laps than Lando. Suggests that dirty air is still a problem, making close following + overtaking more difficult.

  • Lost His Marbles: A side by side of Georgeā€™s tires after the Belgian GP and what a normal post race tire looks like. With no cool down lap after the race, he didnā€™t have the chance to add weight via ā€œmarblesā€, by purposefully driving over discarded rubber on track šŸ”½

Off the Grid

  • Obligatory Newey Update: Some outlets are reporting Adrian Newey has signed the 4 year $100M offer with Aston Martin, to be announced in September. Thereā€™s been a lot of reports that suggest this is credible - however weā€™ll hold off with a feature until itā€™s actually announced. Still a chance itā€™s not real. But who wouldnā€™t take that bag? To add to the silliness, rumor is Papa Stroll isnā€™t stopping with Newey and is also courting Max to join the team. I donā€™t see it, but imagineā€¦

  • Dancing Guenther: Ever want to see Guenther Steiner do a tik tok dance to Charlie XCX with his daughter? Well, youā€™re in luck. He never looked this happy on the Haas pit wall.

  • Olympic History: Thereā€™s been several F1 drivers over the years whoā€™ve competed in the games, with the most popular events being bobsled and sailing. Makes sense as the choices without actual motorsports appearing in the Olympics. Maybe one dayā€¦

  • Olympic Doppelgangers: Social media participants keep adding to the collection of current F1 drivers theyā€™ve spotted secretly competing in the 2024 Olympics. Some of these are pretty goodā€¦ Can you name the driver for each twin below? šŸ”½

Quick Question (My Answer)

I read (write) every word of course. Somehow doesnā€™t prevent typos thoughā€¦

A perfect F1 season comparison using the menā€™s 100m from @ScrewderiaF1 on X. Imagine 8 cars crossing the line within .2seconds? That would be chaos.
