šŸ Toto Renews Contract with Mercedes

PLP Season 2 Edition 3

41 Days Until the 2024 Season Opening Weekend

Another week down as we slowly turn up the heat in anticipation for the 2024 season. A heat that would certainly be welcome right now because boy has it been cold on the east coast. Got me wishing for 2023 Qatar race conditions as I sit here wrapped tighter than a soft tire in a warming blanket. Ok maybe not Qatar race heat.

This week we got a couple more launch date confirmations, a livery reveal (If teams canā€™t build a fast car they should at least try to make it look cool. This also doubles as a great life motto), and a Toto re-up at Mercedes. People were joking that Toto simply gave himself a contract extension as part owner of the team. Which is 1/3 true.. more on that below.

Quick Quiz!

With a rumored rebrand to Racing Bulls for 2024, what was the Red Bull sister team's name prior to AlphaTauri?

Answer revealed at the bottom ā¬‡

Last Week: Bit of a tricky one since Toto is a huge f1 personality and has been Merc team principal for 10 years - however Horner has him almost doubled, taking the helm at Red Bull in 2005. 55% thought Toto was the longest tenured. Congrats to the 36% of respondents who got Horner correct:

Toto Wolff Signs 3 Year Extension

Toto saysā€¦ deal with it šŸ“ø telegraph.co.uk

Mercedes team boss and resident F1 paddock renaissance man Toto Wolff will remain at the helm for at least another 3 years. As part owner in the team, it must have been easy to convince himself that he should remain in the role. However, he did need the sign off from co-owners Ola Kallenius of Mercedes-Benz and Jim Ratcliffe of INEOS respectively, who likely only needed slightly more persuading than Toto himself. Although Merc has slid a bit (by their standards, they are still a top team) in the past 2 years, 8 Constructorsā€™ titles under Toto still speak for themselves.

ā€œIā€™m not going to try to hang onto a position that I think somebody is going to do better than meā€ said Wolff. ā€œI make sure that I have people around that can tell me otherwise. In the end the three of us decided: ā€˜Letā€™s do it again.ā€™ā€

With the revolving door of team principals spinning incredibly fast lately, this brings some stability via the poster child man of F1 personalities. Hard to imagine Toto (or Christian Horner, for that matter) not at the helm of their two top teams.

Also announced this week: Mercedes technical director James Allison signed a new ā€œlong termā€ deal with the team. Another shot fired from the quiver of the silver arrows.

Singapore Scandal

šŸ“ø Clive Rose (Getty Images)

Singapore, which has a top reputation on the global stage for doing the right thingā„¢, saw itā€™s transportation minister S. Iswaran resign on corruption charges. What does this have to do with F1 you ask? Well, he allegedly accepted gifts from Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng, - who helped bring F1 to the city-state and serves as sold shareholder of the GP - gifts valued at $119,000 that included race tickets. Officials insist the event is still on for 2024, (and is scheduled to continue through 2028) and maintain that the organization of the event was conducted legally.

Seems like the race is not in jeopardy, but a look into the underbelly is always fascinating. Also, apparently Singapore government officials are paid $800,000 a year to eliminate the incentive for this type of behavior. Not bad. Just let us know when we approach FIFA World Cup levels of corruption, then we can start hootinā€™ and hollerinā€™.

FIA Releases 2024 Race Times

Wow, what an incredible visual

All the readily available images of the 2024 race times were in GMT or UK time, and who wants to do math to figure out when we need to wake up for 24 weekends next year? Especially time zone math, based on some mystical 4th dimension construct. In any case, I converted them to American (EST) in what many are calling the most beautiful, sleek, informative chart theyā€™ve ever laid eyes on.

Should we schedule a live watch party for the Chinese GP on 4/21? I tell ya one thing, Iā€™ll be dialed in for Vegas again on 11/24. Better than the Superbowl.

McLaren: Year in Review

šŸ“ø @f1 on Instagram

If you had to pick a counter to Aston Martinā€™s season, a papaya yin to green machine yang if you will, McLaren fits that bill. While clearing Alonso and co to finish P4 in the Constructorsā€™ by a slim 22 points, that result seemed completely out of the question a few races into the season. The team brought arguably what looked like the worst car on the grid to preseason testing, then managed just 17 points through the first 8 races of the season - 12 from Norris and 5 from Piastri respectively - with 12 of those coming in the crash fest that was Australia.

While it looked like the papaya people were completely rotten through the first 1/3 of the season, the 9th race in Austria showed signs of a ripening. A solid race by Lando, followed by back to back P2ā€™s in cracking performances in Great Britain and Hungary. Receiving the upgrade boost that propelled the team forward later than his teammate - Piastri showed signs of life soon after notching some great drives of his own, then scoring his first podium in Japan and a culminating with a Sprint victory and GP podium in Qatar. Lando finished incredibly strong, racking up 5 podiums in the last 8 races.

The story of the teamā€™s year was the incredible development work done heading into mid season. Team boss Andrea Stella credits a restructuring of the teamā€™s aerodynamic department as the ā€œfundamental enablerā€ for the turnaround. A fully revised floor including updated fences, floor edge, and diffuser shape, along with redesigned sidepods were brought in Austria - the first race where we saw signs of life from Lando Norris. While closest competitor Aston failed to develop significantly, McLaren shot ahead and did not look back the rest of the year.

McLaren is the team to watch this year. While teams can ebb and flow a bit on competitiveness depending on the circuit, they were consistently Red Bullā€™s biggest threat the second half of 2023. If they can take another development step and build upon the confidence gain coming out of last season, they can give Red Bull and even bigger challenge in 2024. (This is of course, all relativeā€¦ letā€™s make no mistake, Max and RBR will be STRONG again). While there was talk of increasing competitiveness between Norris and Piastri as the team found itā€™s footing, Lando pretty much put that talk to bed with his late season surge. The competition will still be fun to watch as Piastri shows promise, but Lando put himself in the top 3 driver conversation after 2023. Can he finally get a victory in 2024? We think soā€¦

  • Highs: Excellent development, Lando podiums, Oscar Sprint victory

  • Lows: Abysmal start, poor Vegas showing

  • ā€œI think itā€™s been our best year as a teamā€¦ the success that weā€™ve been able to have from after the start that weā€™ve had. I think thereā€™s been a lot of great performances.ā€ - NOR

  • ā€œIā€™ve never been fiery of like that really. I would say Iā€™ve always been competitive but never really fiery, or outspoken or exuberant. I do things in my own way and Iā€™m very happy with how it goes.ā€ - PIA

Down the Grid

šŸ„‡Max Verstappen: Tost says the Dutchman is unbeatable in equal machinery and no teammate will ever challenge him. Never say never and all that but I actually agree, Franz. Not that Red Bull would ever bring in anyone near his talent anyway - what would be the incentive?
šŸ„ˆ Sergio Perez: Aiming ā€œto do one betterā€ next season, but recognizes Verstappen ā€œchallengeā€
šŸ„‰ Lewis Hamilton: Toto says the 7 time champ is absolutely up to the task of fighting Max for his eighth title, as long as Mercedes can deliver the car to do it
4ļøāƒ£ Fernando Alonso: Rumor floating is Yuki could replace Alonso ahead of 2026 as Aston Martin will move to Honda engines, given his connection to the company. The silly is starting already...
5ļøāƒ£ Charles Leclerc: He and Max reflect on ā€œamazingā€ journey from karting rivals to sharing success in F1
6ļøāƒ£ Lando Norris: Featured in The Athletic - looking for greatness on track and normalcy in life.
7ļøāƒ£ Carlos Sainz: Notes the SF-23 car traits Ferrari should retain in 2024, two being straight line speed and braking in short duration corners.
8ļøāƒ£ George Russell: Embracing his fashionista side as an ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger. This is classic George. Ya love to see it.
9ļøāƒ£ Oscar Piastri: On his unflappable nature and why tantrums arenā€™t the key to F1 progress, saying ā€œItā€™s much better to try and fix things that you can control than just get upset about themā€¦ just trying to keep a clear mind.ā€
šŸ”Ÿ Lance Stroll: A flattering headline from the South China Morning Post starts, ā€œMeet billionaire Lawrence Strollā€™s handsome F1 driver son, Lance.ā€ I am desperate to hear what Lance would say to this headline. Something like.. ā€œOh wowā€¦ Thanks, I guess?ā€ I can hear it in my head.šŸ˜‚
11. Pierre Gasly: Sees Mclarenā€™s development last season as a sign of whatā€™s possible, saying ā€œMcLaren is a mystery to usā€¦ I see this promotion within six months as a stimulation for our team. It is possible. Even under a budget cap.ā€
12. Esteban Ocon: Crofty reveals the driver told him he thinks Alpine ā€œis a little bit slowā€. Definitely not what you want to hear before the new season even starts, but perhaps he was speaking in general terms with respect to their 2023 performance.
13. Alexander Albon: Could prove to be the most important F1 driver this year when it comes to 2025 seats. His performance last year could give him more leverage with several teams in pursuit - his signing could be the first domino that tips the rest of the grid into place
14. Yuki Tsunoda: Fresh off a confidence building 2023 season, says ā€œI think this will be the year I prove that I have what it takes to be a top F1 driver.ā€ Gotta love the belief in oneself. And honestly if he takes another step like last year given all that was thrown at him, his stock will continue to rise. ā€œTop F1 driverā€ might be a slight stretch.. but weā€™ll see.
15. Valtteri Bottas: Wants expiring 2024 contract to be ā€œfixed for the future earlier rather than laterā€ in order to avoid distractions.ā€ We are in for a heck of a silly season this year, I know itā€¦
16. Nico Hulkenberg: ā€œHungry for moreā€ despite Haas struggles in his return to the sport, saying ā€œI know that I maximized the potential of what we had and thatā€™s important for me to know and feel thatā€
17. Daniel Ricciardo: On the Australianā€™s rollercoaster F1 journey, 10 years since his first Red Bull stint
18. Zhou Guanyu: ā€œI trust my team to improve on last yearā€, hoping to return to the performance level seen in his rookie season after only 6pts in his sophomore campaign
19. Kevin Magnussen: ā€œFeeling the heatā€ as contract set to expire after upcoming season. Ferrari reserve driver Ollie Bearman could be a potential target for the seat.
20. Logan Sargeant: The American says people ā€œexpect lessā€ from US F1 drivers, and they are not often given the credit they deserve. Show them what the red, white, and blue can do this year Logan! USA! USA! USA!

Constructorā€™s Corner

šŸ„‡Red Bull: Announces 2024 launch will be February 15th
šŸ„ˆMercedes: Simulator reports reveal the W15 ā€œfeels like a car for the first time in two yearsā€. Many around the sport think Hamilton in a Mercedes car of old is the best shot at challenging Verstappen. Personally I think Norris has the best shot this year if McLaren takes another step.
šŸ„‰Ferrari: Former driver Felipe Massa doesnā€™t put the teamā€™s shortcomings on the drivers, saying ā€œFerrari has two very good drivers who work well together. They just need a competitive car to show at what level they can be in the fight for the titleā€
4ļøāƒ£ McLaren: Stella opens up on ā€œhonestā€ F1 approach, saying ā€œIntellectual honesty, rigorousness - they are very importantā€¦because they belong to our culture as a teamā€
5ļøāƒ£ Aston Martin: Mike Krack says ā€œspeaking the truthā€ is the only way to handle Alonso and Stroll
6ļøāƒ£ Alpine: Teases new livery in cryptic instagram post captioned, ā€œblending in is the new standing outā€ with what appears to be an obfuscated piece of the 2024 car in a pink camouflage design. An all pink camo car would be pretty cool...
7ļøāƒ£ Williams: Vowles sees ā€œuntapped potentialā€ in 2024 car changes that go beyond just extra downforce
8ļøāƒ£ AlphaTauri: Technical director Jody Egginton says that downwashing aerodynamics package is not the only key to success and that the ā€œdevil is in the detailsā€
9ļøāƒ£ Stake F1 Team: Itā€™s official: team will be ā€œKick F1 Teamā€ roughly 1/3 of the year, when grands prix take place in countries with gambling restrictions. As if the name was not already confusing..
šŸ”Ÿ Haas: Steiner: ā€œStungā€ to not have a chance to say proper farewell to team. Stinks this was the case. I have a feeling weā€™ll see Guenther land somewhere in F1.. but likely not in a principal role right away.

Tech Talk

  • Ferrari have reduced weight of 2024 6kg - down to 798kg, with focus on the chassis, transmission, hub carriers, and battery. 6kg sure doesnā€™t sound like a lot.. but it reinforces just how tight the margins are in this sport. Trying to pick up a few tenths of a second by any means necessary.

  • Take a look at a rendering of the expected 2026 spec car from AMuS, a German automobile magazine šŸ”½ Itā€™s tough to see here but the fenders on the front wing have moved inside the front tires in an attempt to prevent teams from creating dirty air via outwash. More compact and lighter cars ultimately feels like a good thing as well, and should allow for tighter racing and overtaking.

This feels like a step in the right direction - rendering of potential 2026 vs todayā€™s car šŸ“ø AMuS

Off the Grid

  • Former Indycar race winner and current F1 analyst James Hinchcliffe names PER, SAR, STR, PIA, and RIC as drivers who need to impress in 2024. Interesting he names Piastri after his great rookie season, but heā€™ll have to go toe to toe with Norris to put his name amongst the top drivers on the grid. Iā€™d personally add ZHO to this list after a disappointing 2023.

  • The next generation of F1: 20 exciting up-and-coming drivers to watch. The top 5 include F1 Academy champion Marta Garcia, Alpine junior Victor Martins, F3 driver Luke Browning, F1 Academy driver Abbi Pulling, and SF1TKSFAR (Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber Formerly Alfa Romeo šŸ˜... think it will stick?) reserve driver Theo Pourchaire.

  • McLaren became the first team to reveal their 2024 livery. Compare 2024 (Top) to 2023 (Bottom) šŸ”½ Definitely a cleaner look this year. More black on the sidepods, no light blue accents, and overall feels less busy than the last iteration. Nailed it āœ”

C. Toro Rosso. Though Rood Stier does have a nice ring to it.
